you can see the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza right now. when will it stop? >> good morning on this tursday, may 31st. >> you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. meteorologist mike nicco has that for us. >> hi everybody. let's talk more about those win winds. you can see outside mountain view, san jose, napa, double digits from 14 miles per hour to 32 miles per hour. it's going to be a tough go, especially on our east-west bridges. you can see it has pulled over the blanket of cloud cover. there may be random drizzle for the morning commute. look at the ferry building, the flags unfurled completely because of the breeze this morning. 48 to 55, a little cooler this morning. 55 to 60 at noon, 56 to about 63 at 4:00. that's a couple degrees cooler than yesterday afternoon. we'll be in the mid to upper 50s by about 7:00. all right. let's turn it over to sue and

see what's going on with the roads and if the winds are an issue. >> they are. especially in the altamont pass. seeing slow traffic not due to the winds specifically, but we have our early morning commuters out there from 205 and 580 westbound slowing now. we'll take a look at drive times in just a couple minutes. a couple of problem spots. approaching concord westbound 4 before 242, lanes blocked here and a big significant backup as you're heading westbound with the accident headed towards the concord area. we have an accident in oakland. we had road work out there as well. that's not helping the slow traffic from near the coliseum towards high street. give yourself extra time if you're heading northbound towards oakland or the macarthur maze. >> i want to show you some brand new video. we know a fire investigation is under way in san jose. investigators there looking into exactly what sparked this fire at an office building. firefighters responded to this

about 2:00 this morning on the corner of capital and lake view avenues. they say they got it under control within half an hour. we know at least the california teachers association has offices in the building. firefighters found no one inside the building at the time when they got there. no injuries have been reported. they have remained on scene for several hours checking for hot spots. >> jessica, thank you. 5:02. crews worked overnight to contain seven fires in east contra costa county. one of the main issues they're dealing with is strong winds. cal fire says the fires are 35% contained. several structures are so r.burned more than 500 acres here is a look at the area whe the fires are burning. they started just after 1:00 yesterday afternoon. fire officials reopened byron highway last night. strong gusts up to 50 miles per hour, people are thankful there's been minimal damage so far. although there will be

rebuilding to do. >> the posts are done for about 200 feet. those all have to be replaced. that's a big deal because we've got animals, livestock. >> he also says firefighters have done an amazing job. mike nicco says winds will die down a little bit. gusts are at 20 miles per hour this morning. the cause of the fire is under investigation. this was not supposed to happen again. a family finds out their loved one was found dead in a stairwell at sf general hospital. this time it was ruby leander son, a patient with dementia. five years ago there were security reforms that were supposed to prevent another heartache. matt keller is live at sf general. >> reporter: reggie, this is obviously a sad and tragic outcome. her two children say their family is in deep shock. unfortunately this has happened before here in san francisco. 76-year-old ruby leander son suffered from dementia and was being treated at one of the department of public health

facilities on the campus of zuckerberg general hospital. family members put out a news release two days after xi wandered off. yesterday a staff engineer found her body in the stairwell of the hospital's power plant building which is not supposed to be accessible to the general public. something similar happened five years ago, the body of 58-year-old lynn spalding was also found in a stairwell in the hospital building after she had been missing for 17 days. david perry was a good friend of spalding. >> it's just something that should never happen. the fact that it's happened twice is truly beyond the pale. >> reporter: as for anderson, the medical examiner will determine the cause of death. live in san francisco, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> i just can't imagine what the family is going through. on to new developments in danville after an explosion in a parking lot. >> the atf joining the investigation to try and figure out what happened. an explosive device damaged two

cars sunday night near the smart and final on diablo road. our media partners report atf officials will help out. the shipyard development at hunter's point in san francisco has had its fair share of problems. mayor mark farrell saying he would recommend the place to its friends and relatives. the chronile reports the mayor and city staffers say they're in the process of retesting. tetra tech was supposed to clean it up months ago. two employees pleaded guilty admitting they cheated on the original soil tests. warriors fans have waited all year for this, game one of the nba finals tips off tonight only on abc 7. >> you're looking at the team's final practice before we watch historic game one. >> #dubs7. that means abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with a first look inside or akal.

>> reporter: good morning. it looks like the finals in here. the shirts are on the seats for all the fans to wear tonight. here is a sneak peek at the back of it where it says finals 2018. that looks pretty good, doesn't it? we've got a look at what the warriors will be wearing tonight. take a look at their jerseys, getting the finishing touches put on them. there's a patch, a special phenols patch that goes right above the players' names. this is the team's fourth appearance in the championship. this is their fourth time to face the cavaliers. there's been a lot of talk about that. some wondering if this is good for the nba. kevin durant says it may not be as suspensable as people want it to be or drama-filled, but that's what y've got music and movies for. >> sean livingstonays just because they're the same teams doesn't mean you're going to see the same game. >> it's different team.

here is reggie with more news. in today's "gma first look," new details in the new jersey beach arres you saw on camera. the police officer hitting this woman in the head. here is abc's gio benitez. >> in this morning's "gma first look," police in wildwood releasing body cam video from the memorial day takedown of a young mother. we're seeing some of what led up to the moment captured on the cell phone video and posted online showing an officer arresting a woman and punching her in the head. 20-year-old emily wine man was approached because she had a bottle of alcohol in plain sight on the beach. they took a breathalyzer test. it seems calm until police ask for her last name. >> give you one more chance to give me your last name. i didn't respect me. >> what's your last name? >> you don't need my last name. >> i'm done with you.

do you have the cuffs on you. >> reporter: coming up at 7:00 a.m., we'll more on the dramatic takedown with your "gm "gm "gm look," g look,". new this morning, sears just announcing it will close at least 72 stores. it could be many more. this comes after reporting a $424 million first quarter loss. sears, by the way, also owns kmart. earlier this month sears said it would close 42 stores on top of the 160-plus it previously planned to close this year. they seem to really be drowning with wave after wave of closure announcements. as for which locations they plan to close this time around, sears says it will make that announcement later today. we expect that sometime around midday. i'll let you know if we get any early indications on that. a south bay church is asking for help after a vandal shattered a window and left a pile of hypodermic needless on the ground of trinity cathedral

in downtown san jose. this happened in memorial day. this video shows the man picking up the concrete utility access cover and hurling it through the window. no word on why he did this. no one was inside at the time. the office manager says she discovered the damage on tuesday morning and called police. b.a.r.t. is taking new steps to make sure urgent cleaning needs are taken care of on its trains. >> abc 7 news is at macarthur station. there have been many recent complaints. b.a.r.t. says 14 cleaning team members can quickly intercept a train and clean cars as reports come in. all five of the system lines go through lake merritt or macarthur station. starting monday, b.a.r.t.'s mobile website will have a report bio hazard the movie "happy time

murders" can keep the tag line which is "no sesame, all street." a judge ruled against the makers of sesame street who sued over that tag line. they tried to argue the r rated movie is trying to capitalizes on the reputation and good will of their classic kids' show. the judge says there's no evidence to suggest move i have goers will confuse the two or sponsors and plants are complaining. so sorry cookie monster. state lawmakers have given the green light to elon musk to sell these personal flame tloers. yesterday musk said 20,000 flame throwers should be coming out in two weeks. they sold out in four days at $500 a pop. they resemble a toy gun. they'll be shipped with a complement ray fire extinguisher. what could go wrong? >> if you went out for sushi on tuesday night, you might have run into lebron james and some of his teammates. the chronicle reports that some

pretty nicely past the toll plaza onto the causeway. looking at about an 18-minute drive from 880 towards 101. don't forget the high winds. we also have a wind advisory for the bay bridge, benicia bridge and the altamont pass this morning. we have an incident westbound highway 4 right before 242 in concord. behind that it sounds like there's another problem by sommersville. we're waiting to get confirmation from chp. that one involving a big rig. expect delays westbound for much more than normal for about a 35-minute drive from antioch into concord. the next time you have a chance to valet your car, you may want to park it yourself. look what happened when a valley driver tried parking a porsche in australia. a witness said the valley must have panicked and hit the gas cautioning this mess. maybe they didn't get a good tip.

we had issues becaus of the fires last night. still about 12 to 21 in byron right now with a temperature of 54. the humidity very comfortable at about 68%. you can see this morning the possibility of patchy drizzle. very, very light. i didn't need mine when i ran through some on the bay bridge. you can see 48 to 55. a little cooler than it was yesterday. that's not factoring in the breezes that make it feel cooler. 50s at the coast, low to mid 60s and increasing sunshine dominate the rest of the neighborhoods. jacket and blanket weather, mid to upper 50s. slow traffic leaving antioch for concord. let's get to it. the first one blocking lanes here, leaking fluid, westbound 4 near 242. behind that towards somersville, we have an accident involving a big rig, westbound 4 near

summers ville. that's also blocking lanes of traffic there. 30 minutes from antioch westbound towards concord. in oakland, an accident northbound 880 near high street. that's been cleared out of lanes. traffic is definitely improving there. developing news this morning, the coast guard is reaching out to the public to try to figure out the source of debris that washed ashore in pacifica. the coast guard tweeted photos of pieces of wood that seem to be from a vessel. some of the debris is marked with the words barka and rio. abc 7 news was in pacifica in the area. crews also found lifejackets and clothing. the coast guard has no reports of accidents or missing boats. the coast guard is searching for a possible shipwreck between the pacifica pier and mori point. the oakland fire department hazmat team was called after multiple chemicals were found inside a building while cal fire was looking for illegal fireworks. this happened at 26th and west streets near san pablo avenue.

the fire department tweeted photos of the team taking samples of the chemicals and testing them. no word if any arrests were made. we're hearing from john good man regarding the racist tweet controversy. >> he's not saying much. in video obtained he said he would, quote, rather say nothing than cause more trouble. in a series of tweets roseanne barr says she's sick over the controversy and called goodman one of the greatest actors in the world. she also denied she's racist. an update on what's happening in hawaii. new evacuations the morning on the big island. kilauea volcano continues to' rurpt. now people in two coastal neighborhoods are being asked to leave because the lava may cut off their escape routes. the u.s. geological survey officials are saying the lava is

moving so fast, covers about six football fields an hour. fishl su about 2500 people have been displaced so far. the latest number we have as far as damage, 75 homes already destroyed. the last call for alcohol is a step closer to getting pushed back to 4:00 a.m. the state senate approved a bill that would give seven cities the option of allowing bars to serve until 4:00. right now cutoff is at 2:00. san francisco and oakland are the only bay area cities that would be allowed to move closing time back. the measure heads to the assembly. if it becomes law, it would take effect in 2021. a new poll shows separation in california's governors race. the poll finds that lieutenant governor gavin newsom has exp d expanded his lead, now having 33% of likely voter support. republican john cox is second

again. a slight chance that you may need the windshield wipers. patchy drizzle is possible. as we head towards mass transit, cool this morning and cool this afternoon. your ferry ride, it's going to be brisk if you're outside on the deck. if you're inside it's going to be choppy, also. here is a look at san francisco where we can see sunshine breaking out by noon and temperatures during the afternoon hours hitting the upper 50s after starting off at 53 this morning, ending up at 55 at 8:00 this evening. jacket weather in the south bay. 56 this morning. 61 by noon. mid 60 from 2:00 to 4:00, back to 59 by 8:00. our last stop, back to the north bay to round out this entire weather segment for you. you'll be right near 70 from 2:00 to 4:00. until then, after startion off at 55, you'll be in the low to mid 60s for the better part of today. wind has been a big issue, especially on north-south bridges as it's coming at you.

nearly 30 miles per hour. do you have any issues -- >> not accidents related to the wind. but hang on tight because the san mateo bridge, bay bridge, the altamonte pass all have wind advisories this morning. we have a couple of issues, let's give you an update. in concord westbound 4 just before 242, a couple of lanes remain blocked with an accident. you can see the long solid stretch of red sensors meaning slow and go. you'll have another accident here, westbound 4 near somersville. a little break but don't let that fool you. but you'll be slow and go from the secondary accident. 35-minute drive time. getting reports of a stall with a big rig just before the kalt cot tunnel. that should be eastbound 24 blocking the lane of traffic before the bore there. no slowing. this is in the reverse commute direction heading towards the caldecott tunnel.

only 57 degrees. then it warms to 80 saturday. so they're also seeing extreme swings, too. the atf says a huge fire last month at a concord building under construction was intentionally set. officials released this surveillance video. you can see this suspect. this was shot moments before the flames started to shoot out of the building. now the bureau of alcohol, to e tobacco and firearms is offering a $25,000 reward for info that leads to the arrest and conviction of the video. tim nicholas and his family were among renaissance apartment that had to be evacuated as flames ripped through the construction next door. >> my grandkids with me. i think twice at night before i go to bed. it's scary. knowing that there's people out there doing something like this. it's crazy. no one got seriously hurt. but that three-alarm fire caused an estimated $55 million in damage. consumer reports called for

a change and tesla responded. now consumer reports is recommending the model 3. last week consumer reports said it could not recommend the new model 3 because of the stopping distance that was too long. tesla apparently fixed the problem. in new testing consumer reports found the model 3's stopping distance was reduced by almost 20 feet, making it comparable to other compact luxury cars. this kind of remote fix is a first in the auto industry. uber ceo says the company is set to go public. dara cos row shahi says the company is in a good position in terms of profitability. net revenue up 67% from the year before. the ipo will likely happen in late 2019. a bank to handle the billions of dollars flowing from the legal cannabis market is a step closer to reality. the state senate approved a measure that would create the bank. most banks won't handle pot money because cannabis is technically illegal under

federal law. as a result pot businesses have to use cash leaving them vulnerable to fraud and crime. it also makes it harder for the state to tax them. the measure is headed to the assembly. 5:45 now. california joining three other states in suing the environmental protection agency over mandatory safety training for farm workers. the state claims the epa is delaying the release on important materials on the use of pesticides. workers have six months to complete the training once the epa gives the go-ahea. that hasn't happened. >> there are tens and thousands of farm workers across this country who are not getting the training they should be getting. >> farm workers would be required to go through the training every year once the government implements the requirement. a number of bay area cities already ban plastic straws. a bill aimed at limiting their use has cleared the assembly and is headed to the state senate. supporters say plastic straws contribute to the buildup of trash in our oceans and pose a
