finals fail for the ages. >> you get the feeling j.r. smith thought they had the lead. >> reporter: game tied. five seconds left in regulation, the cavaliers had possession and a chance to win. all they had to do was shoot, and everybody in the arena seemed to understand that except the cavs' j.r. smith who had the ball. >> he didn't know the score. >> exactly. >> reporter: instead of putting up a shot he dribbled out beyond the three-point line. lebron frantically pointed to the basket and then tried to call a time-out, but smith kept on dribbling, only stopping to pass it with half a second left and it was too late. after the game cavs head coach tyronn lue said smith didn't know the score. >> he thought it was over. he thought we were up one. >> reporter: but smith maintained he knew the score was tied. >> i knew it was tied. it's just i thought they was going to call a timeout because we got the rebound. >> reporter: lebron who put up 51 points was obviously frustrated.

>> i thought we were all aware of what was going on. that's my view. i don't know what j.r. was thinking. >> do you know if he knew the score? >> reporter: he walked out of the post game press conference after he was repeatedly asked about that final play in regulation. the warriors went on to win handily in overtime. that didn't stop things from getting chippy between the league's top two superstars. >> he talked trash. i talked trash back. after that it was just a bunch of nonsense that had nothing to do with the game. a great effort all the way through. that was an amazing performance by lebron tonight. >> reporter: so j.r. smith is sticking by his story and said he absolutely did know the score but just in those last few moments thought they might call a time-out. we shall see. also, controversial call at the end that was overturned. there was a foul on lebron james. a lot of people talking about that and, again, guys, this is just game one. game two is coming up on sunday. but a lot of people, if you remember, talking about do we want to see this matchup again. there's your proof last night.

this is definitely worth watching. >> yes, indeedy it is and how do you think the cavaliers are going to respond after that? you saw how king james walked out of that press conference and you can understand the frustration he must be feeling. >> reporter: well, the frustration there of course, right, robin? he scored 51 points, a playoff record for him in his storied career. he put up those kind of numbers and gave that kind of effort and you saw that frustration. so many memes. if you want to be entertained see the memes online of that frustration trying to say j.r., go to the basket. it's going to take that kind of effort from him but gave it last night and still came up short. >> all right, good to have you there for us. thank you, t.j. as he said that's just game one. that's just game one. see the cavs take on the warriors in game two sunday 8:00 p.m. eastern on abc. okay. we're going to go to the latest now on the nuclear summit with north korea. the top north korean official who met with secretary of state mike pompeo in new york is heading to the white house. the first visit from a north korean official since president clinton was in office as both sides work to get the summit back on track. let's start with our chief global affairs anchor, martha

raddatz, and we expect president trump to be given a letter from kim jong-un. >> reporter: exactly, george. and this is only the second time in history that a north korean official has visited the white house and this official is on the sanctions list and had to get a special waiver to even get in the country, but the north's chief negotiator has that special delivery for president trump, a personal letter from kim jong-un. we don't know exactly what is in the letter, but we now have a strong hint. this morning after a meeting with russia's foreign minister, kim reaffirmed his commitment to de-nuclearization of the korean peninsula, saying he hoped for a phased process in resolving the issue, and hoped it could be solved on a stage-by-stage basis. of course, there has still not been any official announcement that the summit will take place on june 12th. secretary of state mike pompeo said after meeting with the north koreans, that there has been significant progress and he

believes north korea wants a path forward. but exactly what that means from the north korean point of view is unclear, although president trump did say this week it may take several meetings to work this out. he also said he is very much looking forward to receiving the letter this afternoon from kim jong-un. george. >> okay, martha raddatz, thanks. let's bring in our chief white house correspondent, jonathan karl, for more on this as well. and, jon, the president eagerly looking forward to this meeting this afternoon and he's been driving this process behind the scenes. >> reporter: this is the president's show. he is acting, george, as his own national security adviser, his own top diplomat. he knows that this has the potential to be the biggest moment of his entire presidency so it was the president who immediately accepted the invitation to meet. the president who abruptly canceled the june 12th summit and then against the advice of his own aides put it back on track. one of the fascinating questions here, george, is whether the president is already talking directly to kim jong-un. you know, in that letter the

president wrote, he referred to their wonderful dialogue. after that the president was -- the white house has been asked many times and the president has been asked has he directly spoken by phone with kim jong-un and they have not answered that question. >> on another front, controversial decision yesterday from the president to pardon of a conservative commentator, the president also suggesting more pardons are coming. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. he seems to really relish the pardon power and talked about pardoning possibly martha stewart who did a spin-off of his show "the apprentice" and rod blagojevich, the disgraced former governor of illinois, also a "celebrity apprentice" star or contestant. so the president clearly likes this pardon power, george. it's one of the few things a president can do that can't be reviewed by anybody. it is an absolute power. >> his critics are saying he's sending signals to those caught up in the russia investigation. jon karl, thanks very much. robin? all right, george. now to that urgent manhunt for the killer of a sheriff's deputy.

police chasing more than 100 tips trying to find this suspect accused of murdering ten-year veteran sergeant daniel baker. alex perez is in dickson county, tennessee. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we've learned just a short time ago authorities have captured the suspect. it's been a long three days across the state as investigators searched around the clock trying to track him down. this morning, alleged cop killer steven wiggins captured after a three-day manhunt. >> saw a male walking on the roadway with a flashlight, tall, white male, looked possibly like steven wiggins. >> reporter: but wiggins had evaded the massive manhunt, the reward for his arrest climbing all the way to $46,000. agents released this new photo of the suspect taken after his capture. investigators had been searching by air and on the ground, suspecting he was on foot.

>> where is he right now? any idea? >> we don't know. >> reporter: the rugged, rural terrain only complicating things. it was about 7:00 a.m. wednesday when sergeant daniel baker responding to a call of a suspicious vehicle tried to pull wiggins over. the suspect instead leading baker on a chase that ended in a shoot-out. the deputy later found dead. last night, a special procession, escorting sergeant baker's remains. authorities who feared wiggins was growing desperate now breathing a sigh of relief. over the last few days they got hundreds of tips and this morning they're thanking the public for their help. george. alex, thanks very much. we're going to get the latest now from roseanne speaking out on camera for the first time since her show was canceled because of her racist tweet and matt gutman has the story from los angeles. good morning, matt. geor.porter: hey, good morning, aspposed to her voluminous tweets roseae didn't say that much on camera, only that she believes in one law and loves

"roseanne," the show, was

canceled after the star sent a series of racist tweets about valerie jarrett, a former aide to president barack obama. and overnight, she also tweeted out a message to actress jaden ray. she played her granddaughter on the show. roseanne tapping out the saddest part of all is for jayden rey on the show whom i grew to love so much and am so ashamed. i can't let myself cave in, though. she only tweeted her apology to rey but her tv children, sara gilbert and mike fishman, that she loves them too and forgives them for, quote, throwing her under the bus. now, she ended her night tweeting that she is praying for a divided nation, and that she is signing off of twitter for awhile. we'll see how long that lasts, robin. >> we will. all right, matt, thank you. now to that tension at the border. the trump administration under fire for separating hundreds of children from their parents if

they illegally cross into the united states. overnight, protesters taking to the streets in san antonio, and more rallies are planned around the country today. our chief national affairs correspondent tom llamas is just back from the border and you spoke with one of those families? >> reporter: that's right, robin. good morning. we did. we spent time with a parent who hasn't seen her son in more than eight months. there are hundreds of families that have been recently separated and immigration advocates say it's happening at a rate like they've never seen before. right now in el paso, texas, this undocumented immigrant and mother caught in the middle of the trump administration's hard-line immigration policy. her name is jocelyn and e says she was fleeing an abusive husband back home in brazil when she and her 14-year-old son crossed illegally into the u.s. because of a growing enforcement tactic, her son was taken from her. she says, he looked at me, like, mom, help me, because i don't know where they are taking me. her son james taken more than

1,000 miles away to live in a facility in chicago. they haven't seen each other in more than eight months. she says if she saw her son she wouldn't be able to speak. she would just cry. he's one of at least 700 children who have been separated from their families since october. >> if you don't want your child to be separated, then don't bring them across the border illegally. it's not our fault that somebody does that. >> reporter: jocelyn who is seeking asylum is now living in a shelter after spending more than three weeks in jail for crossing illegally. with the help of the aclu she is suing to get her son back. >> the parents are powerless and would never speak up. they're too intimidated. most of the time they don't even know where the kid is going for days, months and it's just -- it's unbearable. jocelyn is the tip of the iceberg. >> reporter: the trump administration insists they're simply prosecuting a crime. >> if that parent has a 4-year-old child, what do you plan on doing with that child? >> the child under law goes to

hhs for care and custody. >> they will be separated from their parent? >> as we do in the united states every day. >> reporter: the trump administration has a zero enforcement policy. if you cross illegally even if you're seeking asylum you will be prosecuted. children cannot be sent to jail. that's why the separations are occurring, and though this has happened in cases in the past we're being told never at this level. a man who runs a shelter describes it as immigration enforcement on steroids. guys. >> all right. tom, thank you very much. now to a violent arrest caught on cell phone video. two florida police officers seen hitting a suspect with their batons after he is already on the ground. the officers have been put on administrative leave pending an investigation and abc's gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: this is the dramatic video leading to the suspension of two police officers. >> get on the ground before i -- >> reporter: police say a man reported seeing the suspect, daniel dunkelberger, steal a cell phone and charger and

>> he listens to you. put on something tight and low cut and tell your father to [ bleep ] stop it. tell him it was an obama thing and see how it goes, okay? >> reporter: the comments sparking an immediate social media backlash. former george w. bush press secretary ari fleisher saying there's no uprising against bee. why? because he is liberal. chelsea clinton also criticizing the late night host writing, it's grossly inappropriate or just flatout wrong to describe or talk about ivanka trump or any woman that way. even the white house weighing in, press secretary sarah sanders calling the language vile and vicious. what followed was a full frontal apology from bee tweeting i would like to sincerely apologize to ivanka trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. it was inappropriate and inexcusable. i crossed a line, and i deeply regret it. tbs adding in a separate statement, those words should not have been aired. it was our mistake too.

of social media and more cable shows and you have to rise above the kind of chatter. at the same time people become smartly more sensitive to the idea that certain things you can't say about certain people. it's kind of a contradiction in terms. then above that, of course, you have the administration and trump whoave said things that are inconceivable for another president to say. the idea talking about whether a woman who used that slur on a television show, said that about thbush dauters or obamas, she would have been fired before dawn the next day but i think the standards are shifting quickly. >> is she out of the woods? is it definite that the show won't get cancelled? >> i don't know. if tbs were to fire her now, it would look like they were caving to the white house. they don't want to do that. number two, the other issue with the lawsuit involving at&t and the justice department. i don't think she's out of the woods but know how fast the culture moves and maybe sunday or monday there's something else we'll be talking about. >> larry hackett, thanks very much. >> for not defending at all what is taking place because it is beyond -- >> without question. >> without question.
