the smoke is still pretty intense. >> she's joining us live right now from the command center, katie? >> reporter: firefighters say at this point they have the fire mostly out of control. it is not spreading. i'll step out of the way so you can get a look at their efforts. that large bit of water right now being sprayed is coming from san francisco firefighter boats spraying from the bay. they are dumping water trying to get any hot spots that are in that recycling pile. now, water supply has been an issue for oakland fire. they call fed with mutual aid early on. they talked about the water shortage. >> we have two private hydrants as well as we're working with east bay mud to tap into some of the east bay mud hydrants as well. we did hear reports of fires and water supply does become an

issue. >> reporter: we first started seeing the large plume of black smoke around 4:00 this evening, and it could be seen as far away as morin. and we watched from an overpass and could hear those loud booms taking place. firefighters say they're not yet sure how this started or if the plant was in operation at the time the fire started. the fire attracted a large crowd of west oakland residents many concerned about the quality of the air because of the material that was burning. >> i'm seeing over here car parts, brake fluid, oil, gas, all sorts of flammable fluid that's not good when it's lit up for us to be breathing in. and it's bad for kids and i got kids, too. >> reporter: certainly a main concern out here tonight. firefighters tell us they did keep the fire contain today the

recycling pile at one point threatened a building and some heavy equipment. but they were able to save that. residents tell us the pile is larger than usual and that recycling shipments out of the port have been down. we're still working to confirm that detail with officials and also ask them about the fires that have happened here previously. a live look again. you can see the large amount of water they are dumping on this pile. the air quality is much better at this point. the air blowing south, so that plume of smoke heading towards alameda and san leandro area, firefighters say there are air officials, air quality control officials on scene. they don't yet have a gauge of how bad the air quality is, but they are looking into it. >> great to know a very important update. our first alert about this breaking news went out exactly 4:13 through the abc 7 news mobile app. it's not the only fire we've seen today. a wildfire erupted near some

homes in pittsburgh this afternoon. it burned 12 acres in the area behind glen canyon circle. the fire never did reach any of the homes and the cause is under investigation. and about 2:45 this afternoon an abc 7 news camera scot this fire in walnut creek. it was on quail court not far from highway 24. firefighters responded quickly to the blaze putting out the flames within minutes. and what's not helping frefs firefighters in those situations we've seen so far.rmest weekends >> getting into that time ofut . relative humidity is low, but thankfully today the winds were very light, so that was not an issue. picture outside, a live look. look at your highs today. it was hot in a lot of spots. 95 the high in redwood city, 84 in oakland, even 78 in san francisco. 99 in vallejo.

so this warm weather sticking around for much of this evening. future tracker temperatures by 10:00 a lot of 60s and 70s, and by 10:00 in the morning spots already into the 80s. we have this heat hanging on for one more day. we'll show you when refreshing air arrives in a few minutes. developing news here out of yosemite where two people are dead after falling while climbing el a hiker died last week after falling while climbing half dome. the names of the hikers have not been released. new details now on a kite surfer found dead. the alameda county coroners tells abc 7 news they've identified the person as a 73-year-old man from walnut creek. another kite surfer brought the man's body to shore and emergency responders tried to save him.

his name hasn't been released and the exact cause of death remains under investigation. and in the north bay a park ceremony today. many hope the park named after andy lopez will bring healing and unity to the community. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard joins us now from santa rosa with more on the story. cor sne cornell? >> reporter: this dedication ceremony has ended but as you can see lots of parents and kids enjoying this beautiful brand new park on the first day. many agree this place is more than just a park. it's a way to help the community move forward and heal. >> jesus invites us to pray always. >> reporter: there were prayers in memory of andy lopez. at the dedication ceremony of a new park which bears his

aztec dancers performed a blessing ceremony. he hopes this space will indeed unite. >> for now as you reflect on this park and look and drive by, it'll start to heal and mend what has happened in the past. >> reporter: the park built on the same lot where lopez was fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy in 2014. he was carryingane air soft bb gun which resembled an ak-47. investigators say the deputy fired when lopez turned and lifted it up. >> when police protect and care when they know us and show love for us. >> reporter: the park which cost $3 million features a memorial to lopez with a memory box for his picture. >> today is remembrance for andy and his life and the tragedy

dogs found new forever homes in san francisco. abc 7 news was in the mission district when muttville senior dog rescue hosted a pool party for people looking to adopt older dogs. muttville faced an extra challenge this week after taking in 25 dogs from a salono county woman who died. she was active in the dog rescue community. now others will continue to care for the dogs she loved. >> this is absolutely amazing. they do so much good to help everyone, and all they really care about are the dogs finding homes. >> we've had lines almost out the door. we usually have about six adoptions on a regular saturday, and we've had 26 adoptions today. >> not too bad. muttville's adoption pool party continues tomorrow. >> we are a little less than 24 hours away from game two of the nba finals between the warriors and cavaliers. >> not that we're counting, right? >> no, not at all. >> of course not. hey, if you want to go we know

an update now. we continue to follow breaking news out of west oakland. a large fire is burning at a metal recycling plant on embarcadero west. firefighters tell abc 7 news that water supply is an issue. as we saw a few minutes ago fire boats are helping douse the flames. we've also heard there have been fires in that location before. stay with nbc 7 news. we'll be updating this story not only on-air but online tonight. new dramatic changes happeningt theom of the kilaueavoano. you can see in this drone footage all the cracks and faults that formed since the volcano started erupting last month. numerous fissures have opened and lava has

we are heating up for the first weekend of june temperatures well into the 80s and 90s early this afternoon. and we're going to repeat it again tomorrow. live doppler 7 showing you not a cloud overhead. we are just soaked with sunshine. that's what helped to get us into that afternoon heat. the sea lions enjoying the sunshine right now. pretty calm bay waters. not a cloud to be seen from this vantage point. numbers right now beginning to cool off in some spots. san francisco, a bit of a sea breeze has now kicked in. we're down into the mid-60s. 72 in oakland, but still warm elsewhere. 88 in san jose. 97 that current temperature in concord. and napa with a temperature of 89 degrees. overnight tonight the cooling will be very gradual.

it's one of those june nights where it'll be mild aacross the board. some spots will hold in the 60s while or spots will hover over the next 12 hours over plenty of stars. your 12-hour planner for your sunday a beautiful day. nothing but sun from start to finish. temperatures starting out in the 50s across the board, a couple of spots in the 60s. that creates a very quick warming scenario. by midday already into the 70s and 80s, and 4:00 once again away from the coast we are warm to hot going into the 80s and 90s. highs on your sunday a 72 in san francisco tomorrow. 86 for palo alto. san jose going back into the low 90s sunday afternoon. and 91 in napa, and 95 in fairfield. in the afternoon tomorrow we will see a sea breeze, a bit stronger tomorrow so that's going to help to bring us some cooler air sunday night and into monday morning. but the picture outside is a

beautiful one from santa cruz right now. still have folks on the sand. you notice very few people if any are dipping their toes in that cold ocean water. that cold ocean water sitting at 53 degrees. but beach temperatures tomorrow delightful. future tracker temperatures by monday, we're going to get rid of a lot of this warmth. monday afternoon we'll jump ahead. you do notice we get rid of those 90 degree readings. most spots heading into the 60s and 70s. our warmest spots topping out in the 70s and 80s. and even cooler air returns tuesday, and tuesday morning we could even some drizzle to start us off. plan the next seven days for you tomorrow, all about that sunshine, all about that warm weather sticking around once again. but by monday you're going to feel that refreshing air moving in. it is much cooler across the region.

our heat does break. by tuesday there's that morning drizzle. and then by friday and saturday warm back up with sunnier skies. the warriors and cavaliers are preparing for game two of the nba finals, but they're still answering a lot of questions about game one. understandably, injuries top the list. lebron james took a poke in the eye at the end of the second quarter. james says the eye looks water but feels better. and that's not the case for andre iguodala who's still unlikely to play because of a bone bruise. klay thompson did not play today due to an ankle sprain but plan tuesday play tomorrow. >> my ankle's store and a little stiff at the moment, but i'm going to do what i can these next 24 hours or so to loosen it up as much as possible and get some stability back and i'm optimistic for tomorrow. >> it's a new day.
