minutes. southbound 101, san rafael to san francisco looking great in the green at 17 minutes. let's get now to those major new developments overnight in the san francisco race for mayor. mark leno surging ahead of london brie den. let's take a look at the results we have. you see they are neck and neck, 50% and 50%. actually they're looking like 2,000 votes making the difference. 100% of precincts reporting. so a major change in what we were seeing late last night with leno surging ahead. rank choice voting dramatically changing the results while you were sleeping. let's go to abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard live to explain all this. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. super interesting development here. the votes still being counted and it could be days or weeks before we know the winner, but london breed's early lead appears to be fading as former

state senator mark leno taking the lead for now. redistribution of losing candidates' votes enabled leno to take the lead. rank choice voting allows voters to choose their top three favorites. candidates with the least votes are eliminated in rounds until there is a winner. leno and candidate jane kim teamed up n couraging each other's supporters to list each other as second choice on the ballot. that strategy appears to be paying off. leno has received more than 70% of kim's second place votes. >> i did give my second vote to jane, and i think she gave her second vote to me because we both agree that it is time for fundamental change for a new direction at city hall to address the crises that we've already discussed. we've got to shake things up a little bit. the status quo isn't working. >> reporter: of course, way too early to call this race.

whoever wins would make history. leno would be the city's first openly gay would be the city's first african-american american mayor. this race is getting very interesting. >> mark leno being in the lead because of rank choice voting right now, really neck and neck. we'll explain houp that works coming up later in this next half hour. meanwhile in san jose, sam liccardo is expected to remain mayor. comfortably leading steve brown, 74% to 15% with 56% of precincts reporting. last night lick car dough thanking everyone for their unwavering support. senator dianne feinstein easily advanced to the november ballot. the u.s. senate race is the most crowded on the ballot with 32 candidates. the we is who she's going to face. let's take a look at the results

right now. you can see she has that comfortable lead, 44%, and that is with 94% of the precincts reporting. last night feinstein released a video statement from washington shortly after the polls closed. >> thank you so much for your support and your faith in me. i'm not going to let you down. now it's on to november. >> feinstein has been serving in the senate since 1992. more election results posted on our website right now, abc7news.com. it's where you can keep up to date as more votes are still being counted. >> breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> we have breaking news coming in out of san jose. a car slamming into a fire truck this morning on capitol expressway. abc 7 news reporter matt keller arriving on the scene there. hi, matt. at ms here nissan sentra slammed into the back of this fire engine here on capital

expressway. the firefighters were here at about 2:30 fighting a vegetation fire. an hour later while they were off in the woods here fighting that fire, this car came through and slammed into the back of this truck. thankfully no firefighters were injured. we can't say the same thing about that driver, though. that person, a man, was taken to the trauma center. his injuries are not known at this time. firefighters say it doesn't appear that this person slowed down at all or even applied their brakes. you can see the damage done to the vehicle. that certainly may be the case, but san jose police are going to be investigating what caused this crash out here. they're also going to investigate whether alcohol or drugs were involved. but westbound capital expressway is blocked off as they clear the scene. matt keller, abc 7 check out the temperatures. they are almost exactly the same as yesterday, from sunset at 49

with orange. now let's add up everyone's votes, 20 sticky notes for 20 voters. my candidate, purple has the most first choice votes with seven. if it has over 50% as in 11 votes, it wins the election. if it doesn't have the majority, then things get interesting. the bottom vote better is now eliminated. that would be orange. orange voters, now we go to your second choice. two more for yellow. one more for purple. purple still doesn't have majority. so now a new round. the new bottom, blue gets eliminated. blue voters' second choice votes are distributed. now we have a majority. you can see yellow is the winner even though it started out with fewer first choice votes than purple. you may be wondering what about my third choice? it only gets counted if your first and second choices are both eliminated which did not happen this time. kristen sze, abc 7 news.

an update on the situation in guatemala. the death toll from the volcano erection has gone up. there are at least 75 pete dead this morning, 192 people still listed as missing. those numbers come along with reports of increased activityivy from the fuego volcano. forcing people to evacuate from areas earlier called safe zones. rescuers are digging to find more survivors. there's a lot of places where this ash is still smoking, debris flying about six miles into the air. the situation very much on going. you'll remember the eruption happened sunday. right now there are some homes that are buried up to their roofs in some places. i'll be watching for developments throughout our newscast. in hawaii the kilauea volcano continues to erupt destroying hundreds of homes and completely filling the bay now. lava from kilauea is actually reshaping the coastline of the
