because of ranked choice voting. good morning on this wednesday, june 6. so much to talk about when it comes to the election. you'll see the results at the bottom of your screen all morning long. first, you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. here is meteorologist mike nicco. >> hi everybody. the winds are the big deal once again. 23 miles per hour at sfo to nearly 30 in fairfield. wn 8 froaiield into the o drive bay area in the 30-mile-per-hour wind. the gray is the cloud cover. haven't heard much in the way of drizzle, but still possible the next hour or two. as far as temperatures, waking up in the low to mid 50s at 7:00, mid to upper 50s at the coast no matter what time today. low to mid 60s from noon to 4:00. that's it for our bay and inland neighborhoods even with a mostly sunny afternoon. light jacket weather again at 7:00, mid 50s to low 60s. let's take a look at the traffic. here is alexis. i want to head back to san

jose. that's where we have a crash involving a motorcycle. good news in the last few minutes. we're hearing that rider just had minor injuries. but not so good, pretty significant backup starting to form. northbound 101 just past tully road. the three right lanes are blocked. backup over three miles. surface streets are looking good, monterey is probably your best bet rye right now. drive times looking good, westbound 580 richmond to the san rafael, six minutes. nine minutes westbound 84 across the dumbarton bridge. if you went to bed thinking london breed was the winner of the race for san francisco mayor, well, you're going to be in a shock this morning. >> take a quick look at these results as they stand right now. by percentage, breed and leno both at 50%. but just look at that razor-thin margin. leno ahead by less than 1,200 votes. he gained 10% overnight because of ranked choice voting, auz because of that thin margin,

mail-in ballots could change the outcome. abc's cornell barnard live at city hall. >> reporter: big suf prizes here this morning. the vote still being counted. it could be days or weeks before we know the winner. london breed, her lead appears to be fading as former state senator mark leno pulls ahead in first place by a razor-thin margin. redistribution of losing candidates' votes enabled leno candidato take the lead.d leno ranked choice voting allows voters to choose their top three. candidates with the least votes are eliminated in rounds. leno and jane kim encouraged each other to list the other as seond choice. leno has received more than 70% of kim's second place votes. >> but i did give my second vote to jane and i think she gave her second vote to me because we both agree that it is time for

democrat gavin newsom and republican john cox will be your two candidates in november. here is how it breaks down. you'll see gavin newsom with 33% of the vote, john cox with 26% and 95% of the precincts reporting there. president trump endorsed cox including as recently as yesterday in a tweet. >> one ballot decision here in the bay area receiving a lot of national attention this morning. the recall of judge aaron persky in santa clara county. he sentenced stanford student brock turner to a six-month jail sentence for the sexual assault of an unconscious woman. the results this morning show the yes on recall at 60% with 76% of precincts reporting. abc 7 spoke with both sides including the law professor who launched the recall campaign. first we hear how the judge is handling the loss. >> he's handling it just fine. he's a good person and he understands what has happened. it sad dens me. it's not like he lost his job.

his job was taken away from him by people who feel there's no need to have an independent judiciary. he lost his job for doing a good job. >> this victory is not just for emily doe, but a victory for girls and women everywhere. to girls everywhere, we are with you. >> persky is the first california judge recalled from office since 1932. the 56-year-old will step off the bench as soon as his suck so ses sore is sworn in. also in san jose, sam liccardo expected to remain mayor, and this is a decisive vote, 74% to 15% against challenger steve brown. here is how other statewide races. >> javier becerra trying to hold on to his spot. 45% opposed to steven bailey with 25% of vote. becerra was appointed attorney general after kamala harris was elected to the senate. >> for secretary of state, alex

padilla trying to hold off seven other candidates. he's moving on and will face republican mark moyeser in november oopsz. the crowded race for lieutenant governor still pretty close. you can see eleni kounalakis ahead of her opponent. >> more results on abc7news.com where you can keep up to date as more votes are still being counted. we want to get you another check of our breaking news in san jose. a car narrowly missing a firefighter and slamming into the braack of a fire engine. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is on capitol expressway. last time we checked in with you, the road there was still closed off. any updates? >> reporter: good morning, jeic he in capilexpressway. you can see firefighters are cleaning up the oil that was now on the back of a tow truck. you can see just how much damage

was done to the front of that vehicle there. it's a nissan sentra. i'll have my photographer ian move the camera over to the fire engine. you can see the damage there. i'm told this engine is going to be able to drive off. get this. this truck weighs 44,000 pounds, the nissan sentra weighs 3,000 pound, but still able to move that engine two feet when it crashed into it this morning. all this started when firefighters were called about 2:30 for a vegetation fire off capitol expressway. the engineer for engine 24 was putting out more cones and lights in the road as three other firefighters were battling that fire. that's when that nissan sentra sped through the cone zone. the engineer had to jump out of the way and the car slammed into the back of the fire engine. no firefighters were hurt, but the driver had to be extricated from his car. get this, this is not the first time this has happened in the past month. >> this is our second accident involving a fire engine in the last month, a parked fire

engine. in both cases the fire apparatus had lights on. we ask the public to be aware of the fire apparatus on the side of the road with the lights on. >> the driver of the vehicle was taken to a trauma center. no word on his condition at this time. san jose police have westbound capitol expressway blocked off. they're looking the clear this up. hopefully they'll get the traffic reopened. there are schools in the area. live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. wind is the big story, up 10 to 20 miles per hour at 2:00. 15 to 25 if you're heading out this evening. they'll calm down a little overnight, but they return again tomorrow afternoon, keeping us cooler than average. a lot more election coverage ahead including the vote to ease congestion that could increase the cost of your commute. here is a look at some other election results. we'll be right back.

in all the key races nationally, it will be a republican and democrat in november. >> this is interesting because also at the top of our statewide ticket, the governor's race, we have a republican and democrat. gavin newsom wanted that because it makes his chances so much better in the fall. however, that means republicans are also going to be coming to the polls, presumably in bigger numbers because of the governor's race. >> there was a lot of focus on how the trump endorsement of john cox, republicans were worried if there were two democrats at the top of the ticket. as it turns out, with all the focus on the top two and all the names on the primary ballot, we'll have democrat versus republican in most of these races. >> do you have any predictions for how this will shake out? >> i can tell you gavin newsom is going to be governor. i can't imagine a republican winning for governor in california. >> california is the bellwether state in whether or not the democrats can take over congress in the fall. do we have any better yietd

through next week. alexis. >> good morning, mike. i want to head back to san jose. we have had headaches on northbound 101 already. we've got a new one. this is our camera at 880. we flipped it around to point northward. we have a rollover crash reported around brokaw road. we're hearing from are chp that vehicle flipped over and that is blocking the two center lanes. this is obviously a really bad spot to have something like that blocking. we've already got trouble south of there. crews still crying to clear a crash involving a motorcycle on northbound 101 just north of tully road. close to a five-mile backup. another crash involving a bike. this one solo vehicle crash, southbound 680 before auto mall parkway. sounds like that rider caught some dirt on the right side and laid that bike down. i believe just minor injuries there and that slow lane is blocked. not seeing significant backups there. head back to the rollover

100s in the accuweather seven-day forecast. here is alexis. >> we've got a major problem in the south bay. two major problems. a sig alert for this rollover crash northbound 101 just past brokaw road. that landed on its roof, blocking the two middle lanes. we did zoom in with our camera to try to get a look at this. it was too far for our range there. emergency crews are on the scene. debris was scattered on the southbound side of the roadway. they just ran a traffic break to clear that. i'm expecting long-term lane blockage here and major delays. that is on top of the problem south of there, northbound 101 south of tully road, an earlier motorcycle crash with a five-mile backup there. now to your primary results. let's kick off with the race for california governor. there are 27 candidates on the ballot. now we know just two will move to the general election.

>> the top two vote getters move forward regardless of their party affiliation. gavin newsom held his watch party in stran. >> in that victory speech, newsom shared his vision with the crowd. >> we're the most prosperous state in mirka, but also the poorest. the california dream will never be realized until every californian is sharing it. it's about equity, it's about sustainability and it's about time. >> former los angeles marianne tonio villaraigosa finished third in the race. the democrat endorsed newsom in his concession speech. republican john cox wasted little time going after newsom after declaring a second-place victory. >> mr. knewsome made it clear he wanted to run against me instead of another democrat. as i told him in san jose at the debate, be careful, mr.

knewsome, be careful what you wish for. >> he also in his speech called newsom part of the status quo and criticized newsom for the sanctuary state policy and for the unpopular new gas tax increase. president trump tweeted a congratulations to cox just a few minutes ago. he says in part, great night for republicans, congrats to john cox on a really big number in california. he can win. >> nearly 119,000 voters in l.a. county got a big surprise when they went to their polling place, their names were not on the vote eros center yesterday. the county registrar's office says a random printing error caused that problem and voters were supposed to be handed a provisional ballot instead that is used when a name doesn't appear on the roster. the error could have a major impact on the timing of the results in the state. possibly delays the count for days. in san jose, sam liccardo expected to remain mayor.

comfortably leading challenging steve brown. taking a look at his numbers. 74% to 15%. last night liccardo thanked everyone for their unwavering support. also in the south bay, voters have spoken in the recall of judge aaron persky. this was decisive. 60% to 40%. let's turn to regional measure 3 which would raise tolls on every bay area bridge except the golden gate bridge by $3.00 over the next six years. over the ballot in nine bay area counties. you can take a look, the way voters answered this question, whether they wanted to remain stuck in traffic or pay the eventual $9.00 toll. 54% of voters responding yes. 81% of precincts reporting. if passed, the measure will increase tolls by $3.0 0. the toll increase will happen $1.00 at a time spanning several

years. it's estimated to raise $4.5 billion to fund traffic projects. a large pours of the funds would go to mass transit. voters we spoke with have mixed feelings. people don't want to pay more but traffic is just awful. >> certainly i would like to see b.a.r.t. gets its act together. if the cars would help, that would be a good thing. >> i don't understand how it keeps going up and up and up. traffic has not improved. it's gotten worse. >> more election results posted on our website, abc7news.com. it's where you can keep up to date as more votes are counted. >> let's get back to the breaking news in san jose, a car slamming into a fire engine this morning on capitol expressway. it just barely missed a firefighter. it was a pretty nasty scene. let's check in with abc 7 news reporter matt keller. looks like things have cleared up? >> reporter: yes, they towed away the vehicle and the fire

engine was able to drive off. the good news, capitol expressway, the westbound direction is now back open this morning. all this started when firefighters were called about 2:30 this morning for a vegetation fire just off capitol expressway. about an hour later the engineer for engine 24 was putting out more cones and lights in the road as three other firefighters were battling the fire. >> he was putting the cones out again. as you see, there are these little refleck tors that we have that help to identify the cone pattern more. as he was walking back to just the last cone, this car blew past him, causing him to jump out of of the way. >> reporter: the engineer was okay. no other frietsds were hurt. the driver of the car had to be extricated out and was taken to a trauma center. san jose police are in charge of this investigation and will look into what led up to this crash.

>> you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let's talk about temperatures, los gatos 47, saratoga and alum rock 49. everybody else in the low to mid 50s in the south bay. both sides of the bayshore line out to half moon bay, east bay valley, cooler in the north bay, 40s up here, also. here is a look at traffic on the western side of the bay bridge. breezy bridges this afternoon. be careful there. same thing whether you're on a ferry north or south of the bay bridge. choppy in both places. mass transit, no hot spots whatsoever. temperatures in san francisco, 53 at 8:00. we'll try to push to 56 by 10:00 to 58, really getting warm by noon, hanging out in the upper 50s for the better part of the afternoon hours. peninsula only a little warmer from 55 this morning. look at this at noon, only 60 degrees, getting to 62. that's all we can muster during the afternoon hours.

into the north bay, a little warmer here. temperatures are going to be running from the 50s in the morning to 67 at noon to 71 during the afternoon hours. up around santa rosa, it could be a little warmer than that. fremont high school, senior tigers taking the walk today, getting the diploma at 4:00. it's going to be quite breezy, but a lot of sunshine in oakland and low 60s. congratulations to everybody involved there. i'll have more of those coming up. how about you for traffic? >> not so good. major headaches in the south bay. this is pretty much all you need to see. 101 at 880, our camera pointing northbound right now. we've got a rollover crash. a vehicle on its roof around brokaw. sounds like the person was driving erratically before flipping over, losing control and landing in the two middle lanes. this is just south of there. major delays starting to build. we are hearing the driver walked away from the scene. i don't believe any other vehicles were involved in the

video statement from washington shortly after the polls closed. >> thanks so much for your support and for your faith in me. i'm not going to let you down. now it's on to november. >> feinstein has been in office for quite a while, serving in the senate since 1992. if you went to bed thinking that london breed had the race for san francisco mayor in the bag, you're in for a shock. >> take a look at your screen. let's take a look at the results right now. technically london breed and mark leno are equal percentagewise, 50/50. mark len go gaining 10% overnight because of ranked-choice voting. with that, it could still change the outcome with mail-in ballots. he campaigned with a message to shake up city hall. he formed a controversial alliance with jane kim who was eliminated, insisting a progressive candidate is needed to bring change to city hall.
