mayor's race. nobody would imagine it's so close. london breed considered by many to be the favorite here and mark leno slowly moving ahead here. thanks to rank choice voting. many san franciscans woke up hoping to have an idea who the next mayor will be. instead, they have to -- >> wait, wait. >> hey, everybody! >> reporter: late on election night, supervisor london breed was all smiles for the strong 10-point lead ahead of former state senator mark leno. she talked about the vision for the city. >> i'm talking about proposing things that are bold and hopefully make the difference that people want to see. we need to address homeless nns a different way, not the bureaucratic way. >> reporter: but hours later, new returns put leno in first place by a razor-thin margin, 50% to 49% mostly thanks to top rank voting. candidates with the least

eliminated in rounds until there's a winner. leno and jane kim campaigned together and encouraging each other's supporters to list the other as the second place choice. usc berkeley political science expert said that paid off for leno with 70% of kim's second place votes. >> in rank choice you have a first and second place choice and so obviously what leno and kim did ended up helping leno a lot. >> i did get my second vote to jane and i think she gave her second vote to me because we both agree that it is time for fundamental change. >> reporter: no matter the outcome the winner will be caamican wom y.eest the office. leno, the first openly gay man to take theff no word fro london breed's campaign. mark leno will talk about the lead later today. next round of election results updated at 4:00 p.m. today. mail-in ballots accepted as late

back now to the election coverage. senator dianne feinstein advancing to the november ballot in a crowded field and confirmed to face fellow democrat and form former state senate president kevin deleon. she got 44% of the vote. he got 11%. the closest republican by the way james bradley finished with less than 9% of the vote. now moving to san jose, the decisive win and expected to remain mayor with 75% of the vote. 100% of the precincts reporting. steve brown with 15% of the vote. one ballot decision here in the bay area with attention nationwide this morning. the recall of judge aaron per ski in santa clara county, he sentenced stanford student turner to a six-month jail sentence. and take a look at the results this morning. it shows voter said yes on the recall. 60% with precincts reporting at

96%. abc7 news spoke to both sides including the law professor who launched the recall campaign. first, though, how the judge is handling the loss. >> he's handling it just fine. he's a good person and he understands what has happened. it saddens me. his job was taken away by people that feel there's no need of an independent judiciary and lost the job for doing a good job. >> this victory not just for emily doe but for girls everywhere. to girls everywhere, we are with you. >> he is the first california judge recalled from the office since 1932. the 56-year-old will step off the bench as soon as his successor is sworn in. moving to san francisco, prop e did pass. you can see 68% of voters voting yes on that. 100% of precincts reporting. they said yes to banning the sale of flavored tobacco and
