t at trump is tweeting about this just this morning. tweeting, good luck, alice, have a wonderful life. yesterday evening she walked out of this place a free woman after more than two decades behind bars. >> she's out. >> reporter: in her first few moments of freedom an emotional embrace for alice johnson after nearly 22 long years in prison. the grandmother bursting into tears when she reached the car. >> i want to thank president donald john trump. >> reporter: the president keeping up with the kardashian plea for clemency. the white house announcing wednesday trump would be commuting the 63-year-old's life sentence for nonviolent drug charges. it was her first offense. >> i feel like my life is starting over again. >> it is. >> this is a miracle day. >> reporter: less than a week after her biggest supporter, kim kardashian visited the oval office to champion the grandmother's case.

dream for two decades, this morning is a reality for johnson and her family. >> i'm free to hug my family again. i'm free to live life. i'm free to start over. >> reporter: and kardashian says recently she hopes that this is just the first of many such reunions like this for the people still serving life sentences for nonviolent drug offenses. the president reportedly plans to review dozens more federal cases this year, michael. >> thank you so much for that, marcus. i'm joined now by alice johnson and her daughter katina from memphis, tennessee. ladies, thank you so much for joining me this morning, and, you know, alice, you were convicted of a nonviolent drug offense. you served 22 years in prison. how does it feel to finally be free? >> it's an amazing feeling. especially just being with my family again. >> we saw you meet your family yesterday. how was that feeling to see them

for the first time, to be able to really be reunited with them? >> oh, it was the most exhilarating feeling i've ever had, michael. i wanted to -- i wanted to jump into their arms. >> you committed a crime. 22 years in prison. do you feel that you paid your debt to society? >> yes, i do, michael. i feel that i have not only paid my debt but i've overpaid the debt for what i -- for the crime that i committed, but i'm just so thankful. i'm not bitter about it. i'm just happy that it has come to an end. >> kim kardashian west took your story to the president, why do you think that your story stuck so much with her and made her go to the president and ask for your release? >> from the very first when kim heard about my story and we connected, we truly had a heart connection with this and she -- she knew that -- she told me that she knew this was meant to

be. at the time when she saw it -- when i just popped up on her phone, she says it was a moment that she knew, this is the moment. this is the person that she needs to do something. >> you thanked president trump after you were released. have you heard directly from the white house and what would you like to say to him this morning? >> i'd like to tell the president -- i have not heard directly from the white house yet, but i would like to tell president trump that i am so grateful for everything that you've done for me and my family. this moment right now is happening because president trump had mercy on me and i'd like to tell him that please, please remember us, the others who have been left behind because there are so many. as you said, like me, who need to have -- who need to have an opportunity, the opportunity that i have had. >> all right, alice and katina,

thank you both for joining me this morning and i hope you make the most of your newfound freedom. have a great day. thank you. >> oh, i'm going to. i'm going to. good morning, america. >> thank you. >> as you can see she was happy to be reunited with her daughter, her grandkids and her great-grandkids. >> she made an important point at the end about others who are left behind. thousands serving similar sentences like this right now. we'll see if there is a change in policy for them as well. want to get more on this from our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega and cecilia, president trump has hinted that more pardons are coming. martha stewart has been mentioned. former illinois governor rod blagojevich and he seems energized by the pardon power and another example of how he's doing things in a brand-new way. >> reporter: absolutely. he's been in office for about a year and a half and issued five pardons and yesterday's commu commutation.

no recent president in really modern history in the last few decades has issued a pardon in their first two years in office. you mention some of those names. it seems there are more to come, and his team has a list of what can be described to me, as dozens of names for people who might be up next. congressional democrats are raising red flags about this and sent a letter to the white house counsel yesterday, one of the questions that they asked is whether the president has discussed pardoning anyone implicated in the russia probe and you know that some critics are suggesting that, in fact, this might be a way of the president sending a signal to some of those people caught up in this investigation, george. >> yeah, and he seems to be bypassing the normal important process in the justice department. on another front for the first time we heard ivanka trump may have had some involvement in that effort to build a trump tower in moscow during the 2016 campaign. >> reporter: yeah, her name has not come up in connection with any russian connections or interactions for that matter, in this entire story line, so this happened during the 2016 campaign and she received an e-mail from a russian athlete who offered to introduce her father to vladimir putin so that

they might be able to hatch out some kind of real estate deal. her lawyer put out a statement saying this was an unsolicited e-mail and forwarded it to the president's attorney. take a look at that statement, he says, quote, over the years the trump organization considered and evaluated projects in countries all around the world and nothing was different or wrong about one that might be in russia. but, george, this reportedly has caught the attention of the special counsel's team and congressional investigators who did some interviews on this one. >> asking more questions. cecilia, thanks very much. as the russia investigation continues, a new report from the inspector general of the justice department is expected to include some tough criticism for former fbi director james comey over his handling of the clinton e-mail investigation. this report expected to be released any day, and our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: good morning. former fbi director james comey known for his fierce independence, likely taking heat in the upcoming report for exceeding his authority. >> i'm here to give you an fbi update of secretary clinton's use of a personal e-mail system. >> reporter: that bombshell

conference at the heart of criticism from the inspector general in a draft of the highly anticipated report. sources telling abc news the inspector general takes comey to task for not telling his bosses at the justice department that he had decided clinton should not be prosecuted. >> i have not coordinated this statement or reviewed it in any way with the department of justice or any other part of the government. they do not know what i'm about to say. >> reporter: comey has defended his decision, wanting to separate the fbi from allegations of bias lobbed at the justice department. >> our system is, in fact, rigged. it's totally rigged, okay? it's corrupt. it's rigged. it's disgraceful. >> reporter: his press conference came days after the story broke. the former attorney general loretta lynch met with president bill clinton at a phoenix airport during the campaign. >> i screwed up a couple of things, but in the main, i think given what i knew at the time, these were the decisions that were best calculated to preserve the values of the institutions. >> reporter: comey's also criticized for his october

surprise, telling congress that he was re-opening the clinton e-mail probe only 11 days before the election. this, after allegedly being advised not to do so by a senior justice department official according to sources familiar with the report. it's longstanding justice department policy not to make politically charged announcements in the final days before an election. a source familiar with the draft report describing comey's actions as insubordinate. comey declined to comment. he was allowed to respond to the report's initial findings. it's unclear whether that impacts the final report, george. >> okay, pierre, thanks very much. amy? george, now the latest on president trump's historic summit with north korean leader, kim jong-un just five days away. president trump is meeting now with japan's prime minister at the white house today to prepare and our chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz just landed in south korea with all the latest for us. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, amy. here in south korea, they are watching summit preparations carefully hoping some offhanded

comments don't derail the summit once again. less than a week before president trump and kim jong-un meet face-to-face, rhetoric surrounding the on again -- >> working out times. >> reporter: -- off again -- >> i am waiting. >> reporter: -- summit heating up once more. trump lawyer rudy giuliani making this inflammatory remark wednesday. >> kim jong-un got back on his hands and knees and begged for it. >> reporter: just hours later he attempted to clarify the comment saying it was only meant to convey that trump is in the stronger position. >> kim jong-un changed his position, said he would do de-nuclearization. again, we don't have the conditions yet, but at least that's a big shift and asked to have the meeting again and that's what i mean by begging for it. >> reporter: but the rhetoric has had no effect on planning in singapore with security and logistics preparations going full speed ahead. there has been no public comment

from north korea. but later today, japan's prime minister shinzo abe will be meeting president trump at the white house. amy. >> all right, martha raddatz, thank you in seoul, south korea and, george, you'll be anchoring abc's coverage of the north korea summit live from singapore all next week. michael. >> can't wait to see that. thank you, amy. now to an off the field battle for the boston red sox. a fan taking the team to court suing after a foul ball hit her in the face, claiming the red sox didn't do enough to protect her and other fans. abc's gio benitez has the story. >> i had never heard of anybody being hit with one, no. >> reporter: stephanie taubin taking the stand in a massachusetts courtroom describing the moment that a foul ball hit her in the face while watching the boston red sox play the minnesota twins at fenway park in 2014. >> the feeling of shock and emotion of, oh, my god, what just happened. >> reporter: taubin now suing team owner john henry and the red sox for negligence.

she's asking for $9.5 million saying the foul ball entered an area that was previously protected by a glass barrier that had been removed and not replaced alleging that gave her facial fractures and neurological damage. >> i heard my bone, the bones in my face crack and i just felt an enormous amount of pain. >> reporter: an estimated 1,700 fans are hurt each year by batted balls at major league baseball games. that's at least twice every three games. >> look out. oh, my goodness. >> reporter: just last year a little girl was hit by a foul ball at yankee stadium. her father saying she suffered multiple facial fractures and bleeding in her brain. and the red sox telling abc news that the team and owner john henry have always viewed fan safety as a fundamental priority but they can't comment any further while this case is in trial. meanwhile, just a few months ago, all 30 mlb teams extended

children and parents. >> i would do anything to help those kids. i hate that this distracted from them so to them i am also sorry. >> reporter: and tbs does plan to keep a closer watch on bee's show and she jokingly pointed out new members of her team, a panel of censors to bleep any offensive language going forward. >> the good old bleep button. >> we have one of our own. thank you. we're going to move on now to our exclusive of the man shot by that off-duty fbi agent whose gun went off while dancing in a denver bar. there's the pictures. the 24-year-old victim is telling his story for the first time and clayton sandell has details. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning, george. tom reddington just moved here and this morning he is in a lot of pain and can't sit up on the couch for an interview. he says what happened that night was beyond bizarre, a split second that changed two lives forever. this morning, the man caught in the path of this dancing fbi agent's accidental misfire is

speaking out recovering from a serious bullet wound to his leg. >> there's a swelling, aching pain in my calf, a massive cramp. >> reporter: 24-year-old tom reddington went dancing with friends over the weekend at this denver bar. a few feet away, 29-year-old off-duty fbi agent chase bishop is busting a move but during this backflip he drops his gun accidentally busting a cap. >> we sat down at one of these picnic tables. i heard a loud bang and thought, oh, some idiot set off a firecracker. all of a sudden from the knee down became completely red. and that's when it clicked in my head, oh, i've been shot. >> reporter: as agent bishop appears to walk away that quick smile and a hands up people in the crowd rush in to help using a belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, reddington in and out of consciousness. >> shot in the leg. >> reporter: he says his injury

is putting his job at amazon on hold. >> yeah, i'm walking five, ten miles pretty much every day for work lifting things. >> reporter: he says he's watched this video at least two dozen times. >> i originally thought like when i found out i got shot it was an altercation that i got hit in the cross fire of because civilian casualties like -- those happen. but when i saw him do a backflip, i couldn't -- i couldn't help but laugh. >> reporter: but reddington now says he's reached a surprising conclusion. >> there is no pointing, there was no aiming, i don't blame the guy. i don't want to ruin his life. i just want a private phone call from this guy. >> reporter: the fbi tells us agent bishop will be held accountable. he could also face criminal charges. denver police say they're still waiting for lab results that will show if bishop had been drinking when his gun ripped a hole through reddington and this wall. reddington has hired an attorney who is already talking to the fbi. >> they voiced very sincere concern about the health of my client and i was really appreciate that.

let's go over to amy. >> all right, george. thank you. turning to an important new warning for drivers. aaa out with a new report about driving on worn tires in wet weather and how it could but you at significant risk. our senior transportation expert david kerley has all those details you need to know. good morning to you, david. >> reporter: good morning, amy. you know, our modern cars have such great safety systems these days, automatic braking, stability control but safety comes where the rubber hits the road is really true and this morning, a new recommendation about when you should change your tires. this kind of out-of-control spin on wet roads leading to a new warning this morning from the aaa. researchers tested a vehicle with new tires and worn tires and side by side you can see the car with the older ones takes much longer to stop on a wet track before hitting a dummy. in fact, when the new tire vehicle stops the one with the old set is still traveling at nearly 40 miles an hour and this happened with a tread depth that would have been legal in all

states. >> you just can't stop? >> well, you can. it just takes much longer and, in fact, the distance is roughly equivalent to that of a semitruck over 80 feet longer. >> reporter: the general rule is that a tire with a tread less than 2/32 of an inch must be replaced. but this aaa test was with a tread twice that depth and still the vehicle took nearly a third of a football field to stop. >> the tread of the tire, its only purpose in life is to get water away so the tire can remain in contact with the road so you have to maintain that tread depth. >> reporter: so this morning, based on the research, aaa is again calling for a higher standard replace tires earlier. upending that old test of using a penny and abe lincoln's head. the recommendation is now to use a quarter and washington. if you see all of george's head your tread is getting into the

good morning. it's 8:59. i'm reggie aqui from "abc7 mornings." mike nicco, another kind of coldish day? >> yes, exactly, about 5 to 12 degrees below average once again. you can see some clouds lingering a little bit longer, but it's a great time to do some yard work or just relax in the yard during the evening hours. ocean and bay play, yeah, the breezes, a little bit of caution there with small craft advisories. upper 50s, low 60s coast of san francisco, mid-to-upper 60s around the bay and some 70s inland. the heat is still on next week. alexis? okay, checking out a pretty decent commute through walnut creek. southbound 680 was slow for a little while this morning, but basically wide open now approaching 24. you're also looking good southbound towards san jose this morning. and drive times, westbound 80 highway 4 to the maze, big improvement, down to 30 minutes.
