they are expected to greet each other before the cameras and then go behind closed doors for about 45 minutes alone, only translators, and then they will joined by the broader delegation. it's supposed to last most of the day, but both president trump and kim expected to leave singapore before the end of the day right now. john, president trump says he'll know in the first minute wihethr he can work with kim. >> reporter: he says he has been preparing his whole life for this moment, but this has been a process, this whole process has been driven by the president, by a president acting on his own instinct and his own counsel, a president who accepted this invitation from kim

an instant. >> trying to get a feel for each other, trying to see if peace can be forged. there's been no peace treaty. i'm joined by martha what can president trump offer kim to convince him he doesn't need weapons? >> reporter: president trump said he will talk about denuclearization. president trump made it clear that has to be on the table. most experts and former officials will tell you he will never give up those weapons, but if you consider the conventional wisdom about that, maybe kim wants to come in the modern world and wants his economy to

improve. he wants more meetings than just this one. president trump and kim want more meetings. they say this is a process. kim obviously, if he decides to denuclearize, it will take a while, but this is something we will not know the result of for a long time, but what he wants for exchange is security without weapons. >> the process could take months and years. we know, david, that nuclear weapons are what got kim here today and he's already achieved what his father, his grandfather couldn't, sharing a stage with the american president. >> no question. the numbers when it comes to the nuclear arsenal is stunning. four of the six nuclear tests have happened under kim jung-un. as you point out, many observers say the first victory for kim is

appearing with the president of the united states, the leader of the free world. >> the gentlemen are about to come out right now. we expect to see kim jung-un. both the president and kim are there. they'll be walking from opposite sides as we see president trump getting prepared to walk to center stage. there it is. the first handshake between the united states president and the north korean leader. 65 years in the making. we can't see what president trump was saying to kim there. they will go behind closed doors for that meeting with

in recent months. we don't know for sure, but president trump has likely talked to him over the phone, but this is the first face-to-face. >> i think the three of us so many times in the last few months talking about the possibility of war and being on that boarder, that dmz, myself a few months ago and realizing that these are two nations that could go to war and the military preparing for that. to see the hand on the shoulder that president trump put on kim jong-un is extraordinary. >> the words that president trump has used to describe kim jong-un and the ones that kim jong-un has used to describe the president. we don't know what's going to happen once they get behind those doors, but you made the point especially after those first tests and those threats from kim jong-un, the military was poised for possible military action. no one was sure it wouldn't come. >> absolutely. you know, one of the things we

let's go. >> the president thanking the press. he says he expects a very good meeting, hoping for success. kim jong-un saying they've overcome obstacles to get here. looking forward to what the day can bring. you made the point, kim jong-un groomed in switzerland for leadership and picked by his father to become his successor. such a mystery to the world. >> we know so little about him. it was the president saying a few weeks back saying he was 27 years old when he took over when his father died. the president saying say what you want, but that's not easy, especially at that age. saying i'm not giving him credit or giving him credit, i'm saying it's a hard thing to do. a moment of respect for that leader. keep in mind this is a brutal dictator. he killed his trusted uncle. it's believed he was behind the

assassination of his half brother, that nerve agent administered by those two women. of course, millions of north koreans back home that have faced starvation and food shortages and rolling blackouts. the fact that he's sitting next to the president of the united states, the leader of the free world, is historic for him. >> the question is how much the president will confront kim jong-un in this meeting on issues beyond the nuclear program. >> there's a call for him to address those human rights issues in a big way, but president trump, of course, wants this to be a successful meeting. i think you heard him say i think it will be tremendously successful. he said it an honor to meet meet kim jong-un. president trump said he wou heer he thought the meeting would be successful. i think it took a minute and a

half but he said he thought it would be tremendously successful. let's go back to what we were saying before and the military confrontation that we thought was real. our u.s. military was practicing all the time for what may come if kim jong-un decided to do an atmospheric test. kim jong-un decided to go forward with that because he could very quickly gain the ability to put a nuclear warhead on a missile. >> of course, if this meeting fails, that prospect of military action could come to the fore. for now we've seen smiles from both leaders. both looking confident and both hoping there will be success. meeting one-on-one now. we're going to stay here all night long all through the night with breaking reports as it warrants. the first summit between a united states president and a north korean dictator.

back now to our regular programming. all right. you're watching a special report. this historic meeting in singapore that at times looked like it may never happen between president trump and kim jong-un. as you can see it is under way and so far so good. they seemed cordial with one another. >> we are following it closely and if abc brings another special report, we will bring it to you. we are moving on. a homeowner has a huge mess to clean up and a mystery. >> a car slams into his house and then just takes off. the crash happened less than a week ago. video captures the car barrelling into the house and then it drives away. >> we have the story. >> reporter: the time was 8:30 thursday night when a dark bmw loses control and slams into the side of this home. the car bounces out and the driver continues on their way. the entire crash caught on the

home surveillance camera in realtime and slow motion, as well as a neighbor's camera from across the street. the homeowner was out of the country traveling with his family. he talked with him. >> it happened in a matter of seconds and it destroyed a brand new house. >> reporter: david says neighbors alerted him of the crash. they think the driver was under the influence. >> i don't know what went through this person's mind. >> reporter: most of the damage happened to the outside of the home and the garage. the homeowner tells me he estimates the repair costs to be $100,000. these pictures show the damage to a parked cooper and other items stored inside. >> now we have to rebuild our house. we have to get our cars fixed and replace computers. >> reporter: this is being investigated as a hit and run. >> i've been in this neighborhood for almost 20 years and i've never seen anything like this before. >> reporter: a friend has been

doing investigative work hoping to catch the driver. >> i figured it was a black bmw from '98 to 2002. there's not too many around here. >> reporter: investigators believe there's visible damage to the car. there's no description of the license plate. anyone with information is asked to contact the police. abc 7 news. >> that's wild. are you ready to party? the warrior's championship parade is tomorrow morning. >> you can watch it live on abc 7. two big changes. the route is different and there's no rally at the end. >> the parade begins at broadway and goes up 11th street to lakeside drive and wraps up at 13th and oak streets. >> we are live from oakland with a look at the preparations. you're just back from cleveland

and the big win and now the parade. >> reporter: it is past 6:00 meaning at broadway it should be completely shutdown, but there is still one lane open for drivers who have been trying to sneak through. keep in mind this is about to close completely in just a few minutes. in addition to this, there are lots of other changes for this year's parade that you need to know about before you go. there's a game plan and the bay area has a plan too when it comes to planning for a championship parade. tuesday will be the third parade in four years. >> i have been to every parade. >> reporter: oakland knows what to expect. 1 million fans are expected to attend. >> i have parking so it's okay. i'm not too worried about it. >> reporter: having the parade e experience before means b.a.r.t. is ready. >> we're going to have extra

paramedics and equipment. >> reporter: officials are urging passengers to stay flexible so you'll see more signs directing you where to go. the parade is starting at 11:00 a.m. it should mean less congestion. this year there is no rally. >> i'm very disappointed, but i'm happy we won. >> reporter: the nba says there will more interactive stops along the route. one thing fans say is a sure bet. >> lots of people, community, happiness, sharing the love. >> reporter: how's this for planning ahead? i spoke to some who say they've booked rooms at nearby hotels to bypass the traffic. abc 7 news. two young warriors fans got a huge surprise today.

on abc7news.com. the mayor race is too close to call. the department of elections released a batch of results within the last couple of hours. razor thin margin. >> reporter: election workers counted about 6,000 ballots today and there are 18,000 more left to go. the board of supervisor president maintains her lead over senator leno. the difference between the two is less than one percentage point and unchanged since yesterday. the top two candidates finishedd neck and neck. the race narrowed over the next three days and the turning point came on saturday when breed pulled ahead and she widened her

the most destructive in history.

the north bay wildfires last october burned 280,000 acres, destroyed structures and killed many people. today the board of supervisors faced what happened. >> abc looks at what they want to change before the next disaster. >> reporter: eight months later sonoma county has come this far. construction like stitches closing wounds from the fires. in the supervisors chambers today, a report card in the form of this thick book.

>> we looked hard at what our issues were. >> reporter: christopher services as the interim emergency services manager after a report cited problems, including a breakdown of the county system. >> where is the fire? >> there are fires in so many places. >> reporter: the county already knew that 911 dispatchers couldn't help everyone. this report offers solutions proposing 21st century alerts to keep people informed. it turns out that had these fires happened almost anywhere in california, results would have been much the same. >> we achieved the status quo in california. we thought we were prepared. >> reporter: the lessons from this report speaks to the future and the past, especially with the probability of a major quake in the bay area increasing with every year. systems we have today will not be able to cope with trapped people, ruptured roads and fuel,

food or water shortages. let the fires be a lesson, the supervisor said today. >> the most important thing is communicate so that emergency alert and warning, the fact that we didn't use an amber alert, that's what gets me. i wanted to be woken up, but i'm a leader so i have to own it as a failure. >> reporter: call it a work in progress from a disaster still in recovery mode. abc 7 news. a bizarre kidnapping in oakland ended with a chase today. abc 7 has the story. >> reporter: at about 7:45 this morning oakland police received a call from a man who had been assaulted while his 71-year-old mother was being forced into a car. police arrived as the alleged kidnapper was taking off. >> we have informtion the suspect had repeatedly threatened to kill her so we are

extremely happy that our officers were able to have such a quick response, locate the car, the victim. >> reporter: the alleged kidnapper left from this house on oak street. the owner of bay auto center told us police were everywhere. >> we don't know what they did. we saw a lot of policemen right here. >> reporter: officers chased the car for more than 45 minutes eding up in east oakland. at one point the driver had rammed into a police car. no one was hurt. the 71-year-old woman was fine. police say it turns out the woman was the alleged kidnapper's landlady. >> this is a landlord/tenant dispute that ended in an assault, a kidnapping and the rambli r ramming of a police car. >> reporter: the suspect faces several assault and kidnapping

charges. abc 7 news. more bus lines are moving into the transit center this weekend. effective saturday five routes will use it. just one debuted in december. on saturday it will be joined by the rapid and rapid. that will hopefully mean the opening of the grand hall and the 5 1/2 acre rooftop park. cal train is still on the list. transit will be different than usual tomorrow for the celebration. >> bart is making changes to accommodate an estimated 1

access will hurt low-income users. the san jose mayor thinks this is an economic issue and an infringement on the internet. >> i like to believe once this gets beyond the discussion of what's happening with just a few fcc commissioners and into the broader public, we'll see stronger commitments to a free and open internet. >> reporter: even with state lawmakers trying to restore net neutrality, legal challenges could ensue because rules block states from overruling action. the laws are still going through committee. they may not come up for a vote until august. the governor has not indicated whether he will sign a bill to restore net neutrality. a woman is spending her first full day at home after a ten-month deployment with the navy in afghanistan. she arrived last night and reunited with her daughter in a

good evening. the warriors will party with 1 million of their best friends in oak lar oakland and then it's back to work. the first order of business is to resign kevin durant kevin durant. he said he's thinking about retiring when he turns 35.

durant is expected to opt out of his current contract and sign a longer term deal with the warriors. the expectation would be around $40 million a less, it could be a little less than that. this is not going to be much of a negotiation. it's more like you fill in the blank. >> whatever he wants. sometimes you don't negotiate. i'd love to have him for ten years, but he's earned the right to sign whatever deal he wants and i want him to sign a deal, but i want him to be happy and i want him to know that we want him as long as he wants to be there. that shouldn't be a long negotiation, but our goal is to try to keep the whole thing together. that's the pieces of the puzzle we have to try to figure out. >> the warriors partied after the game in cleveland. the coach watched his players on the dance floor. the real celebration will come on a beach or a surfboard very
