lowest rate since the late 1960s. rebecca jarvis, abc news, new york. apple is closing a security loophole used by law enforcement to crack into iphones to solve criminal cases. the software update will disable the data port an hour after it's locked, making it virtually impossible without a password. fbi and other agencies have relied on third party companies. they say the same flaws could be exploited by criminals. mike pompeo expects to resume negotiations with north korea within a week or so, but president trump is already claiming victory. the president says the nuclear threat is gone and the world can now sleep well. abc's kyra phillips has more. >> reporter: president trump landing back in the united states, declaring there is no longer a nuclear threat from north korea. everybody can now feel much safer than the day i took office, he tweeted.

but kim jong un still has his nukes. >> okay. >> reporter: and the joint statement he signed in singapore didn't indicate how and when he would give them up. it also didn't say that denuclearization would be verifiable and irreversible. >> i read the statement, and it's difficult for me to see if something was actually agreed to or not. >> reporter: arriving for talks in south korea, secretary of state mike pompeo says he expects major disarmament from the north within the next two and a half years. he bristled at questions from the media calling them ludicrous. >> we have developed a very special bond. people are going to be very impressed. >> reporter: just as the president was declaring victory, so, too, was north korea.

trump pledged to, quote, lift sanctions as mutual relations improve through dialogue and negotiation, not exactly what president trump said in his news conference. >> the sanctions will come off when we are sure that the nukes are no longer a factor. >> reporter: north korea's newspaper also trumpeting the president's announcement that the united states will no longer engage in military exercises with south korea. >> we're not going to play the war games. >> reporter: south korea caught offguard. democrats now saying in a sit-down with kim, the president gave a lot more than he got. >> this is not the art of the deal but seems to be the beginning of the art of concessions. >> reporter: but president trump is confident his bet will pay off. >> i believe that he wants to get it done. >> you trust him. >> i do trust him, yeah. i think he trusts me, and i trust him. >> reporter: bottom line, we are still waiting for the specific and verifiable steps on exactly how north korea will dismantle and destroy its nuclear arsenal.

david louie from our san francisco station explains how. >> reporter: proponents say california is too big and unmanageable and is losing people because of high taxes and a quality of life on the decline due to traffic and other issues. >> we see people leaving california in droves, and this is an opportunity for californians from a wide variety of demographics and geographies in california to say they want something more and different and better. >> reporter: san francisco and sacramento would be part of the state of northern california, with a population of 13 million versus nearly 40 million for a single state. the coastal area from monterey to los angeles would be called california and have about 12 million residents. and southern california would have 14 million people. they have not decided how to divide the assets.

during a visit to south korea, mike pompeo said the u.s. wants kim to take major nuclear disarmament steps within the next two years. he expects talks with north korea to resume in about a week. but he slammed a reporter who asked for details on the denuclearization process saying he found the question insulting, ridiculous and ludicrous. meanwhile, the president is dismissing concerns about his human rights record of north korea. he said a lot of other people have done some really bad things. as for his decision to negotiate with kim, the president praised him as smart and tough. he was able to take control of his country at a young age, and he said, quote, i think we understand each other. abc news has learned president trump's long-time lawyer, michael cohen, is

parting ways with his legal team and will likely cooperate with federal investigators. this comes two months after the fbi raided cohen's home and office. pierre thomas has more. >> reporter: he was one of president trump's closest confidantes, at his side for more than a decade. his long-time lawyer and fixer, michael cohen. >> i'm obviously very loyal and dedicated to mr. trump. i'll do anything to protect mr. trump. >> reporter: that loyalty is now being put to the test. sources telling abc news, cohen is likely to cooperate with federal prosecutors. word he's parting ways with his own attorneys. among the reasons, a source says concern over payment of legal fees. he's under incredible pressure. in april, fbi agents raided his apartment, office and hotel room seizing documents and more than a dozen phones and electronic devices. >> i just heard that they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys. good man. and it's a disgraceful situation. >> reporter: the u.s. attorney for new york's southern district is investigating cohen's personal business dealings,

including his role facilitating a hush payment to stormy daniels, who claims she had an affair with president trump. as the u.s. attorney's office digs into cohen's close relationship with president trump, special counsel robert mueller has questions too. sources tell abc news he wants to know what the president knew about cohen's efforts relating to russian real estate investments. the president has insisted his fixer won't flip, tweeting in april, sorry, i don't see michael doing that, despite the horrible witch hunt and dishonest media. cohen has not been charged with any crime. our john karl asked the president if he'd be in line for a pardon. >> mr. president, what about mr. cohen? >> thank you very much.

police are searching for at least one person responsible tor a series of highway shootings. four cars were hit near sea-tac airport. no one was injured. the road and one of the runways were temporarily closed as a precaution. both are now open again. the gunman remains at large and they are calling the situation an active shooter incident. now to president trump's latest claim of success after his summit with kim jong un. he tweeted that the world can sleep well, because there is no longer a nuclear threat from north korea. the country still has its nuclear weapons, but mike pompeo offered a vague timetable saying the u.s. wants kim to take major steps within the next two years but he would not provide more details. sources tell abc news that the president's former lawyer and confidante is likely to

cooperate with federal investigators and they say michael cohen is parting ways with his attorneys. maggie rulli has more. >> reporter: president trump's long-time lawyer and fixer, michael cohen, has stood by the president's side for more than a decade. >> i'm obviously very loyal and dedicated to mr. trump. i'll do anything to protect mr. trump. >> reporter: but sources are now telling abc news, cohen is likely to cooperate with federal prosecutors, something the president insisted he would never do. >> i just heard that they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys. good man. and it's a disgraceful situation. >> reporter: cohen has been under pressure since fbi agents raided his office and hotel room, seizing documents and phones and electronic devices. they are investigating cohen's business dealings, including a hush payment paid to stormy daniels.

a compromised immigration bill ahead of votes on two competing measures next week. opponents demanded a change in the policy of separating families. joe crowley says he's fine after suffering heat exhaustion during the protest. but we are getting a look inside a government shelter for undocumented immigrant children. tom llamas reports from brownsville, texas. >> reporter: i was part of a group of journalists allowed into the casa padre facility that houses undocumented immigrant children. it used to be a walmart super center, 250,000 square feet, converted now to house these children. and they're almost at capacity. that's nearly 1500 children that they serve three meals a day, two snacks, bedding and education. from what we saw, it looks like they were treated very well, they were smiling. they get haircuts, meals, snacks. the kids were laughing, playing video games, foosball, soccer outside. the facility has a movie
