>> it's funny you should mention that, robin, it's actually our biggest crowd so far this summer. we've been counting, more than 1,700 people all ready for mr. worldwide. >> and more when we go out there to join them. so excited for that. such an entertaining fellow. first, we begin this friday with that breaking news overnight. a roller coaster derailing at the boardwalk in daytona beach, florida leaving a car dangling from the track. you can see it there live. those two riders falling more than 30 feet. eight others rescued from the coaster. abc's victor oquendo is here with the latest. good morning to you, victor. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. those two passengers who fell more than 30 feet were rushed to the hospital as trauma alerts as firefighters had to work quickly to rescue everyone else left dangling from the coaster cars. overnight, a terrifying and chaotic scene in daytona beach. panic breaking out on this amusement park's roller coaster. >> i've got at least two people possibly hanging out of this roller coaster.

>> reporter: that roller coaster known as the sandblaster, derailing. this car dangling off its tracks, two riders in the front car thrown 34 feet to the ground. the conditions of the victims unknown at this time. bystanders hearing a loud crash then racing over to the screaming passengers. you can see them here, heroically holding the hanging car. >> it was chaotic. as you can imagine, the ri were frightened. rsde >> reporter: firefighters rescuing ten trapped riders, one by one, from a chain of three cars. crawling their way across the fire truck's boom to safety. six of them rushed to the hospital. >> it was dangling by a thread like it was barely hanging on. >> reporter: landyn was in line with her brother about to get on the coaster that derailed but decided at the last minute not to get on. >> i heard a big, loud boom and then a bunch of people screaming and i looked over when i heard the crash and just saw the car go straight down. >> reporter: according to a report from the news journal the 40-year-old coaster was found to have numerous problems during a

february inspection report. now an investigation into what caused the cars to derail is under way. again, the extent of the injuries is unknown, but all of the victims that were transported to the hospital were at least conscious. >> that's good to know. all right, victor, thank you. to washington and the growing firestorm over children being separated from their parents at the border. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: hi, robin. good morning to you. it's been just five weeks since the administration started this zero tolerance policy that separates families from their children. children from their parents rather and now they are running out of space to hold everyone. this morning, the tents are already up at this border crossing outside el paso along the texas/mexico border. soon this is where hundreds of migrant children will be housed. tent cities like this popping up because of a trump administration zero tolerance policy separating children from their parents who cross the border illegally. mkidsre n i authorities are running out of room for them.

the attorney general using the bible to justify it. >> i would cite the apostle paul in his clear and wise command in romans 13 to obey the laws of the government. >> reporter: the crackdown leading to scenes like this, a former walmart in brownsville, texas, now holding nearly 1,500 boys as young as 10 years old. they're only allowed outside for two hours a day and can only make two phone calls a week. jeff sessions says their stays are short but for boys like these, it's an average 56 days away from their parents. the controversy erupting in the white house briefing room. >> where does it say in the bible that it's moral to take children away from their mothers? >> i can say that it is very biblical to enforce the law. >> reporter: the exchanges turning contentious. >> i know it's hard for you to understand even short sentences i guess but please don't take my words out of context. >> come on, sarah. you are a parent. don't you have any empathy for

what these people are going through? >> brian, i'm trying to be serious, but i won't have you yell out of turn. >> reporter: but even the president's allies joining in the opposition. >> we don't want kids to be separated from their parents. >> reporter: the argument is that the law requires this zero tolerance and that is why they are separating these families but, robin, make no mistake, this is their policy, past administrations have chosen to interpret the law differently. >> the house will vote on this very issue next week? >> reporter: yeah, they will. even though we heard republicans like speaker ryan there go public with their opposition, it's unclear though whether they have got the votes to pass this, robin. a rcink you. amy? now to that new report blasting fired fbi director james comey and his handling of the clinton investigation calling his conduct insubordinate. comey at a minnesota airport when the report was released declining to comment but later writing in "the new york times" that he respectfully disagrees. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has more on the

story. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: amy, good morning. that report is searing and embarrassing for the justice department and the fbi. but new fbi director chris wray was adamant that the mistakes did not change the outcome of the investigations. he admitted though that the report requires all fbi employees to take a hard look at themselves. fbi director christopher wray acknowledging the blistering assessment of that new inspector general report. >> the report does identify errors of judgment, violations of or even disregard for policy. >> reporter: the inspector general concludes former fbi director james comey should have never held that press conference without telling his bosses at the justice department he was going to recommend that hillary clinton should not be charged in the e-mail probe. >> they do not know what i'm about to say. >> reporter: the inspector general called that decision extraordinary and insubordinate. at that infamous pre conference comey also criticized clinton. >> they were extremely careless.

>> reporter: those comments, the report said, violated long-standing department practice of not criticizing suspects who are not charged. the inspector general also found that comey had used a personal e-mail account to conduct unclassified fbi business. this irony was not lost on hillary clinton who sarcastically tweeted, but my e-mails. and on comey's decision to announce that he was re-opening the clinton e-mail probe just 11 days before the election, the former director is accused of rejecting long-standing department policy of not making announcements close to the end of election campaigns. comey said he did the best he could, suggesting he was trying to avoid the appearance of bias. >> given what i knew at the time, these were the decisions that were best calculated to preserve the values of the institutions. >> reporter: this morning the president was firing back, basically calling the fbi's past leadership a disgrace. >> the top people were horrible. you look at what happened.

they were plotting against my election, probably has never happened like that in terms of intelligence, in terms of anything else but they were actually plotting against my election. >> reporter: president trump is referring to two senior fbi officials who exchanged a series of anti-trump messages during the campaign. the report found that while the two were biased against trump, their negative attitudes about the president did not affect the outcome of any investigations. the president clearly wants one of them fired. amy. >> we saw the president speaking moments ago on a wide range of topics, saying, kim jong-un speaks and his people sit up at attention. i want my people to do the same. that comment getting a lot of reaction and abc's sekyra phills is there and he asked him about his former lawyer, michael cohen. >> reporter: i did. i asked him that question that everyone wants to know,

mr. president, do you think michael cohen will flip on you and he said no. >> i always liked michael. i haven't spoken to michael in a long time. >> is he still your lawyer? >> no, he's not my lawyer. >> i just want to know -- >> excuse me. >> i want to know if you're worried that he's going to cooperate with federal authorities. >> i'm not worried because i did nothing wrong. >> reporter: as you know, michael cohen is under investigation for possible criminal charges. documents, devices, even recordings were seized in those raids. we still don't know for sure if anything that was swept up in those raids could implicate the president. the president also facing a legal battle over his charity.

>> reporter: the president tweeting, the sleazing new york democrats doing every they can to sue me. the charity gave out more money than it took in. i won't settle this case. the suit accusing them of illegally using funds from the donald trump foundation to pay legal bills, promote trump's hotels, support his presidential campaign and even spend $10,000 on a portrait of himself, later hung on the walls of one of his golf clubs. the most damning allegations involving this iowa fundraiser that candidate trump staged instead of participating in a debate. that event raking in $2.8 million for the trump foundation. >> we love our vets. >> reporter: the lawsuit citing this e-mail from campaign manager corey lewandowski, requested the foundation to make grants in iowa just days before the caucuses, asking, is there any way we can make some disbursements from the proceeds

of the fund-raiser this week while in iowa? this isn't a criminal case and there are no criminal charges but this could sting because the lawsuit seeks to shut down the foundation, force the president and his kids to pay nearly $3 million in restitution. also, it makes sure that they never lead a nonprofit for at least a decade. robin. >> we'll talk more about this with our chief legal analyst dan abrams who's also in washington. we heard there, dan, that the president believes this is politically motivated. >> the allegation is that this was effectively a shell foundation, that the treasurer didn't even know that he was the treasurer, that there were no employees. the attorney general is saying he was using the funds from the foundation to, as kyra points out, support campaign costs, legal fees, et cetera. there are very specific rules

and laws that exist when you have a not for profit organization and you're simply not allowed to intermingle funds. you're not allowed to use it for other things and that's going to become the legal question here. >> as kyra also pointed out, this is a civil case. >> that's right. for now this is just civil, meaning money damages to prevent the family from ever serving as leaders of foundations in new york at least for the next year or in donald trump's case, for ten years, pay restitution. but the attorney general has also referred this for example to the irs and federal election commission, so there could be in the future possible state or federal charges but for now this is just civil. >> let's turn to the justice department's report that was very critical of the former fbi director. what's your bottom line on this, dan? >> so, this is a very long report, ndwath t clinton e-mail -- the clinton e-mail investigation went forward. and the only sort of declarative

finding of wrongdoing was with regard to james comey. and how he went about doing what he did. meaning the announcement he made in june, the announcement that he made in october of 2016 and it wasn't just that he made the announcement, it was what he said about hillary clinton. the rest of it talks about the appearance of bias, possible bias, et cetera, but that's a different issue. >> we'll see how it impacts the fbi's reputation. dan, thanks very much. michael. >> thank you, robin. now to that urgent manhunt for a highway shooter in seattle. police looking for the gunman who opened fire on four cars and now we're hearing the 911 calls from that chilling incident. abc's will carr is on the scene in seattle. >> reporter: overnight, newly released 911 calls from drivers details the terrifying moments just after bullets ripped through their windshields, windows and doors on a busy

seattle highway. >> what makes you say someone shot at you? >> well, i have two bullet holes in my windows. >> reporter: authorities say a shooter unloaded on four cars wednesday from the side of the road. >> did you hear any gunshots? >> all i heard was a pow when it went through my windshield and glass everywhere. >> reporter: amazingly, no one was hurt. authorities stormed the area, shutting down the highway and a runway at nearby sea-tac airport, but the suspect got away. detectives now canvassing this neighborhood with metal detectors searching for shell casings they're hoping will connect them to the gunman. >> does it appear the shooter was targeting specific drivers or was this totally random? . it's indicating that it was random because none of these four vehicles had anything to do with each other except they were driving on the same freeway at the same time. >> reporter: authorities are running ballistic tests to find out what gun was used. they're investigating if there's a l link to another report of shots fired earlier this month.

>> reporter: but off screen millie bobby brown is the target of bizarre cyberbullying that isn't only strange but completely based on lies. the 14-year-old shut down her twitter account wednesday after being flooded by posts using the #takedownmilliebobbybrown. there are twitter users posting fake stories and memes falsely depicting brown as homophobic and islamophobic, one writing she saw him wear a gay flag pin and scoffed in disgust and pushed him to the ground. but others immediately came to brown's defense. a user tweeting she's just a kid. your twisted humor has the opposite intended effect on her and her following. >> it's the huge double-edged sword of social media. in this case with millie bobby brown, people may forget she's only 14 years old. this ia loh,therr not shs us >> reporter: brown, who has used her platform to speak out about social issues, has been a vocal supporter of the lgbtq

community. >> millie bobby brown has done quite a bit for the lgbtq community. at the mtv movie and tv awards she wore this ampersand pin which is about our together movement at glaad which is about all marginalized people coming together. >> reporter: brown is not the first to leave social media after being a target of online harassment. in 2016 leslie jones quit twitter for two days after she received racist and bigoted slurs online and "star wars" actress kelly marie tran deleted her instagram after her page was hit with racist and sexist comments. even if most people don't believe those trolling, her fans say it can still be damaging. brown and her reps have not commented beyond shutting down the account. again, she's only 14. >> a kid. >> yeah, a lot of people outraged over this. it's ridiculous. >> thank you so much, adrienne. we appreciate it. now to a dramatic rescue in ohio. a young woman swimming and then sucked into a dam miraculously saved by a fisherman who jumped

in to pull her out, and abc's erielle reshef is here with more on that story. good morning, erielle. >> reporter: good morning to you, amy. this is a remarkable case of the right place at the right time. a late night on the water for that fisherman quickly turning into a daring rescue as he rushed into dangerous water to save that teen. >> i'm over here at the charles hill dam, and one of my friends just got sucked down. >> reporter: around 2:20 a.m. authorities say 18-year-old regina williams was swimming in an ohio lake with friends when she was suddenly sucked into the undercurrent of a dam. >> where is she at? i need to know. >> she is right into the gutter. there's no way we can get down to her. >> reporter: the force of the water sweeping her helplessly downstream. >> i think someone fishing down here just found her. >> okay, where is she? tell me where she is. >> we found her.>> rr: jar timms fishing near the spillway spotted williams in distress and instinctively jumped to her rescue. >> i don't think there even was a decision. i just went. i mean i just threw in my pole

mr. worldwide. >> we cannot wait to get out there ourselves but first we begin with that breaking news overnight, a roller coaster derailing in florida sending two riders plunging more than 30 feet. others were trapped. victor oquendo is back and he has the latest. good morning again, victor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. firefighters in daytona beach race to rescue those riders who were trapped after those coaster cars derailed. the terrifying and chaotic scene unfolding overnight when cars on the roller coaster, known as the sand blaster, derailed. two riders in the front car were thrown 34 feet to the ground. they were rushed to the hospital as trauma alerts. firefighters rescuing ten trapped riders from a chain of three cars. some of them had to crawl their way to safety. six of them were taken to the hospital. no word on their conditions, but they were conscious. people who were nearby said they heard a loud crash and when they rushed over they heard the screams of those panicked passengers. now there's an investigation to determine what caused that ride to derail. robin. >> everybody wants to know. all right, victor, thank you.

>> reporter: 28-year-old tonya's leg swelling and red. >> most painful thing i've ever felt. >> reporter: they are just 2 of more than 1,200 florida beachgoers stung by jelly fish just this week. those purple flags flying warning of dangerous marine life. even the lifeguards aren't immune. >> this week i've been stung a few times. if you absolutely do not want to get stung don't go in the ocean right now here in volusia county. >> reporter: captain tamra malfours of the beach safety ocean rescue say it's the result of a perfect storm of winds and currents. >> when you go in the water you don't see them at all until you feel the sting. >> reporter: an estimated 150 million people are stung by jellyfish every year. experts say that stinger loaded with venom can strike with an acceleration 100 times that of a bullet and depending on the type of jellyfish, punctures can range from mild to deadly. the likely culprit in florida, the moon jellyfish, more annoying than lethal and can often be treated on the spot. so how do you stop the burning?

moment 50 years in the making. a father meeting a son he never knew he had and, t.j., you are here with this incredible story and you were there the moment that they finally met. >> i've been in this business a long time. one of the coolest stories i'v ever seen. again imagine you're 70-something years old. you have lived your whole life. you have children, grandchildren, and you get a phone call that says, hey. we have never met, but i'm your son. >> this is life changing. it really is. >> reporter: tom is on edge. he's about to meet his son for the first time. a son that for 50 years he never knew he had. >> he wants to be embraced, well, he is my son so we're going to embrace him. >> reporter: james h hayes grewp in a loving midwestern home. his dad was a policeman. his mom, a waitress. there were no secrets in this house. >> i was always aware that i was adopted. i also have an adopted brother. we talked about it openly. >> reporter: in his 20s jim became curious about his biological parents. he reached out to the adoption agency, but they could only disclose a little information

about his birth mother. he found her, reached out, but she didn't want to meet him. >> i was a little bit perturbed like how could this be? i was probably more surprised than anything. i did ask her about the birth father and she wasn't willing to share anything. >> reporter: 20 years went by. jim and his wife had three kids but he always wondered. then just last year friends encouraged him to take a dna test with ancestry.com. it came back with unexpected results. >> it says, you know, father/child and i dig deeper and it says you are a match. this is your parent and it gives the initials but there's no name. >> it was a moment he had waited for his entire life. but now what? >> what do you do with initials? >> reporter: after months of internet research, he figured out that the initials t.n. stand for tom nuvelan, living in california, married for 44 years to wife susan with two children of their own. last march, jim gave his birth

father a call. >> susan picks up. i said, is tom there? >> he started asking questio. we're kind of, well, what's happening here? >> i said, well, you know, are you sitting down? >> and i said, why? >> well, it shows on ancestry.com that we have a father/son relationship and i'm not the father. long pause. >> right now even as i tell you it's like, what? >> he said immediately he didn't know. he wasn't shying away from the story line and the conversation but he was very surprised. >> and so i said i really need to ponder this or think about this a little bit. it was kind of like -- took us back -- took me back, both of us back. >> yes. >> reporter: tom had a brief relationship before he was married. apparently when they broke up she was pregnant and never told tom and gave baby jim up for adoption. tom and jim talked on the phone for months but couldn't wait to meet.

counsel's investigation into collusion with russia in the trump campaign. manafort ran the campaign just before and just after the nominatining convention. this stems before his time with the campaign, and we want to make that very clear. he was brought in by trump's children who wanted a change from lewandowski. manafort is one of the highest ranking campaign aides to face charges. he is facing charges related to money laundering, bank fraud and others. he is pleading not guilty. i want to go to pierre thomas in washington for the very latest, and pierre, judge amy berman jackson is making it clear she does not trust paul manafort to follow the guidelines of his house arrest, and this may be one of the biggest developments so far in this case. >> reporter: she took the allegations of obstruction of justice seriously. the notion that he was reaching out to witnesses and that is what the prosecution, and the

special counsel's office is he was reaching out to witnesses trying to influence their testimony. one of the witnesses according to the prosecution said that manafort was trying to sub born perjury. the judge took that seriously. she said he will be detained, pending trial. she said it was a very difficult decision, but she basically said that manafort had not been treating the case seriously enough, and that she has reason to believe that he has been committing crimes and would continue to do so, tom. >> and pierre, many of manafort's friends said they believe this entire case because it predates the campaign is about putting pressure on manafort to give up what could be potentially damaging information on the president. >> reporter: they are playing hardball, putting pressure on manafort through the myriad of charges filed against him, but it's important to point out to our viewers that these charges stem from allegations of actions that took place after a

superseding indictment was levied against manafort. they claimed that after those charges were filed, manafort reached out to at least two witnesses, tried to contact them, did communicate with them, and then tried to get them -- according to the government -- to change their potential testimony. >> i want to go to our chief legal analyst, dan abrams. we understand he will be detained pending trial, and that could lead us to believe that he is possibly on his way to jail? >> yeah. i mean, meaning that when this decision is made in all likelihood, it means he won't leave the courtroom a free man, and, you know, remember though, when it. cos to t co -- comes to the purposes of bail or bond, you know, there are two things you're trying to do. number one, you're trying to make sure a person shows up, and number two, you're trying to make sure that the terms of their release are abided by, and the focus here is really on number two. there is no indication thus far

that manafort is going to flee. the concern is that simply he has not been abiding by the terms of his bail, and so that means that now he is going to be held. they can appeal this. they can try to get the judge to change hurt mind down the road, but, you know, it doesn't look good. for now, this means that paul manafort is going to jail. >> i want to read you quotes from the judge's decision. she said, i struggle with this decision, and i have no appetite for this in the end. i can't turn a blind eye to these allegations. clearly the special counsel's evidence that he had violated the house arrest and possibly had done some witness tampering was very clear. >> and i think it's important to note. you hear a lot of people saying, you know, how much pressure manafort is being put on by the special counsel, that people are trying to get him to flip or to talk. you know, i think it's simpler than that, which is i think this is the special counsel going by the letter of the law and

saying, look. one of the terms of your release was that you wouldn't reach out to any other potential witnesses, and not only did you do that, you tried to influence, according to the special counsel's office, that witness. now i think that this is not about trying to get manafort to flip as much as it is to simply forcing manafort to abide by what were the terms of his release. >> thank you for your analysis. pierre thomas has new reporting. let's go back to him. >> reporter: we have some color from the courtroom. the marshals led manafort away from the court, and he returned to his wife after he waved to her and gave her his belt, wallet and those items. he is clearly likely going to jail today. >> pierre, you have been covering this from the get go, from when the charges first came down back in october of 2017. how big is this day right now on what's happening to paul manafort? >> reporter: clearly, he was a former chain chairman for the trump campaign.

clearly a very senior official now facing serious charges. today, being led to jail pending trial. this is extremely unusual for a white collar suspected criminal to be held pending trial, and the judge just said that his flight risk has multiplied, and she put that together in this decision. >> we have reached out to the president's attorney, and so far, no response yet. we want to go to the white house. kyra phillips is standing by. you spoke with the president today. he has been on his own campaign since the charges first came down against paul manafort saying he had very little to do with the campaign. that is not necessarily true because he had an important role just before the convention and just after the convention making sure he secured the nomination. what is the president saying today? >> reporter: well, let me get back to that in just a second. this is coming out right now, tom. actually, i can tell you that sources close to the trump legal team -- this is being told to

abc news right now -- sources close to the trump legal team are stunned by the manafort decision. stunned by the manafort decision, and you mentioned the gaggle that happened here today. that was unprecedented. that has never happened before. the president has never walked out from the mansion and stood behind where we all go live and actually talked to the press for 20 minutes, tom. it was quite remarkable, but in the interview, i did ask him in that short gaggle i should say, do you think that manafort should go to jail? it's the only time he turned away from me and didn't answer my questions. a couple of other questions were thrown out. i will tell you as trump has been trying to distance himself from manafort lately, he did tell all of us as a group that his former chairman, quote, had nothing to do with our campaign. he also went on to say that paul manafort worked for me for a very short period of time. he worked for me, me, what?
