it is saturday, june 16. good morning and thanks so much for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the forecast. hi, frances. >> most of us waking up to some low stratus clouds, but a few areas are starting to clear out right now. congratulations to all the graduates this month. right now james logan high school, lots of their graduates getting ready for their graduation at 7:00 today. partly cloudy conditions at 7:00. temperatures in the mid-50s. warming up and more sun by 10:00 a.m. to the low 60s. and for the rest of us as you see some clearing right now over

parts of the bay bridge. temperatures in the 50s. and then below average this afternoon, inland areas only in the low 80s. around the bay, mid-70s and at the coast, clouds will stick around most of the day so we're staying cool, upper 50s to near 60. slightly cooler tomorrow. i'll have the full details coming up. crews will be out repairing two separate water main breaks in walnut creek. the first happened at 1:15 this morning at the knoll avenue and lilac drive. the second happened about two miles away at walnut boulevard. officials say dozens of customers are impacted. it is unclear what caused the breaks or if they are related to each other. no word on when the repairs will be complete. she was once considered a rising star and her company's medical technology was supposed to be the future of the medicine. instead theranos founder elizabeth holmes is facing 20 years in prison after being

charged with defrauding investors, doctors and patients. according to the indictment, holmes and ramesh balwani used advertisements and solicitations to encourage doctors and patients to use theranos' blood testing laboratory services even though they knew theranos was not capable of consistently producing accurate and reliable results for certain blood tests. amanda has the details. >> anything you want to say? >> reporter: before walking out of the federal courthouse in silence, holmes and balwani pleaded not guilty. outside of the courtroom, jeff cooper smith speaking on behalf balwani. prosecutors say they were behind a multimillion dollar scheme to defraud investors and another to dupe doctors and patients.

they say they knowingly lied products. accuracy of their technology tt was said to be chear and more efficient way of doing blood tests. >> put his heart and soul into this, he had his own family tested. >> reporter: and a lab joe biden visited back in 2015. this video shows biden and holmes touring the facility. only sign theranos even exists in the building was this one posted on its front door giving contact information for theranos. abc 7 news. holmes dropped out of stanford and started theranos in 2003. in holmes, she was featured in several national publications. its value soared to $9 billion that year. holmes was one of the main speakers at a ted talk in san francisco back in 2014.

>> the right to protect the health and well-being of every person of those we love is a basic human right. >> but things started to unravel in october of 2015 when a "wall street journal" investigation questioned the accuracy of the testing devices. by early 2016, theranos was laying off employees, holmes was banned from the labs and the company had its license revoked. the "wall street journal" story was the work of one reporter who had spent three years looking into the company. we spoke to him about his investigation. cornell barnard has some of the insight into what was really going on at theranos. >> she refused to stop overpromising to investors. >> reporter: this prize winning reporter isn't surprised theranos founder elizabeth holmes now facing federal fraud charges.

>> it not only defrauded investors, but also put patients in harm's way. >> reporter: his new book bad blood details the rise and fall of the blood testing company. he says while doing research, he was threatened with lawsuits, holmes allegedly asked the "wall street journal" owner and investor rupert murdoch to intervene. >> she tried to persuade him to kill the story. >> reporter: murdoch refused. stanford university medical school professor was an early critic of holmes and her idea. >> for me it is a vindication because i was right. >> unfortunately, it turned out it was too good to be true. >> reporter: professor rosen had high hopes for theranos. >> she was a cutting edge pioneering woman in this area.

and it was a big fizzle. >> reporter: the reporter says many silicon valley startups make bold claims early on, but he says this is different because it is about medicine and real results which could not be faked. cornell barnard, abc 7. >> you can watch the whole interview by going to our website abc7news.com. terminally ill californians now have the right to end their lives again following a decision by a state appeals court in riverside. the law lets patients obtain life ending drugs if a doctor determines that they have fewer than six months to live. last month a lower court judge declared the so-called right to die law unconstitutional for procedural reasons. opponents of the end of life option now have until july 2 to file any objections. it turns out you may not see warning labels about cancer when you buy coffee after all. state health officials are bucking a recent court ruling that required retailers to warn

customers about a cancer risk associated with coffee roasting. starbucks and 90 other companies fought a lawsuit about the policy for eight years before losing. the state made its decision after a world health care organization review showed that there isn't enough evidence to prove coffee causes cancer. time is 6:07. not giving in to fear, bay area residents who survived the route 91 harvest festival shooting in las vegas last fall turned out for the santa rosa country music festival. melanie woodrow has the story. >> reporter: kim and her friends are country strong. >> we decided that we needed to continue doing what we were passionate about. >> reporter: their passion brought them to the summer music festival. she was at route 91 with her now fiance. >> we got separated at one point and i was under the bleachers and he started shooting the bleachers.

for five consecutive days, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 or bigger has hit the kilauea summit. yesterday's earthquake was a 5.3. as you can see here, lava continues to pour into the bay. and this video was provided by the usgs. lava fountains from one of the fissures reached heights up to 130 feet. and as many as 700 homes have been destroyed. the department of health recommends residents with breathing issues should limit their outside activities and stay inside. abc 7 news was in pacific heights when former secretary of state hillary clinton arrived at hamlin school. she spoke to 8th graders and their family during yesterday's graduation. >> so congratulations. i can't wait to see the mark you make on the world. >> i really loved her comments about perseverance and bravery and that will definitely channel through my decisions in the

scholarship but his live-in girlfriend at the time deleted it without his knowledge. she set up a fake e-mail address and refused the offer. it was all in a bid to force him to stay close to her. the judge call her conduct despicable and awarded eric $350,000. a young bald eagle at big bear lake has taken the internet by storm. the bird is so popular people are flocking to a store there to buy pictures. our sister station in los angeles has the story. >> reporter: trish has captured images of bald eagles soaring around big bear lake for years. the images of these two bald eagles are stunning, but it is their baby known as stormy that is stealing the show. >> i think it is just absolutely incredible that an eagle is truly a rock star. >> reporter: and somewhat of a youtube star because this year there is a live camera in the nest.

>> i have people come in the door and they are looking from side to side and i know what they are looking for. >> reporter: they want to buy the photos. >> we even get some from england that people are watching, we get from germany that people have made comments about they said. >> reporter: in big bear lake, rob mcmillan, abc 7 news. sky 7 flew over pleasanton while people enjoyed the rides at the fair. it runs until july 8. abc 7 news was also downtown when cowboys and cowgirls drove about 150 cows along main street. it marks the second year in a row that the fair has sponsored the cattle drive. happening today, nathans will host a qualifying event. the top finishes will compete in coney island. they have to eat as many as they can in ten minutes. the event is at 1:30 this

so here are the forecast highlights. breezy, below average temperatures this weekend. and then morning drizzle, even a few sprinkles possible father's day tomorrow. and then summer heat, get ready for that next week where we'll see some 90s return to the bay area. here is the forecast animation. so 7:00 this morning, clouds quickly pulling back. mostly sunny conditions this afternoon. but then check out what happens tomorrow morning. we'll see this onshore flow push and areas of green show some possible light precipitation, some sprinkles. most likely drizzle especially along the peninsula coast and confined mainly during the early morning hours. so it shouldn't affect your afternoon plans if you have something planned outdoors for father's day tomorrow. but then it is partly cloudy especially along the coast all day tomorrow. so the drizzle potential, we're talking a few hundredths of an inch. and think this animation slightly exaggerates it. again, it is mostly around the peninsula coast, half moon bay. we could possibly get some sprinkles as well into parts of

the east bay again during the morning early hours. highs today will range from 60s at the coast, 62 in san francisco, 68 in oakland, 76 in san jose. and warmest spots in the low 80s like antioch, santa rosa and lake port. a lot of county fairs already started. san mateo county fair, we have a mild start. mostly sunny by 11:00, breezy this afternoon. near 70. sunsets at 8:34 this evening. you will need a jackets or extra layer by 10:00. clouds will move in overnight. and if you are headed to the alameda county fair, really comfortable with 69 degrees by 11:00 a.m. you will definitely need to be reapplying the sunscreen all day long for the kids. a high of 78 this afternoon. and cool at 11:00 p.m. when it closes. so for father's day tomorrow, we have the clouds, drizzle, even a few sprinkles in the early

clouds, but becoming sunny except at the coast by noon. and below average temperatures expected today. inland areas near 80, around the bay mid-70s. at the coast upper 50s to near 60 on. sunsets at 8:34. breezien cy econditions today a sprinkles and drizzle for father's day, but it won't be too damp. i'll tell you the details coming up. now to the russia investigation. this morning president trump's former campaign chairman paul manafort is in custody. he arrived at court yesterday already facing dozens of charges. and now a new one, that he tried to influence witnesses while under house arrest. pierre thomas has the latest. >> reporter: paul manafort headed to court facing the prospect of losing his freedom. and that is exactly what happened. federal judge amy jackson revoked manafort's bail. immediately sending him to jail. already facing charges of money

laundering and fraud, he was recently accused of witness tampering. robert mueller claiming manafort and a man with alleged ties to russian intelligence tried to convince two witnesses to lie. clearly angry judge told manafort i can't turn a blind eye to these allegations. with that, manafort was escorted out of court as a shocked wife looked on. u.s. marshals handing her his belt, tie and wallet. >> are you going to visit paul in prison? >> reporter: his lawyer stunned. >> do you have any comment on what happened today? any comment at all? >> reporter: president trump distancing himself from his former campaign chairman. >> he worked for me, what, 49 days or something? very short period of time. >> reporter: manafort was actually with team trump for 143 days. and for more than three months, he ran the campaign playing a key role at the convention. >> the goal of tonight is to lay out some of the vision of the trump/pence campaign.

>> reporter: back then, the president heaping on the praise. >> paul manafort has done an amazing job. and all of paul's people. paul brought on his staff and we really have a great staff. >> reporter: the president tweeting, wow, what a tough sentence. didn't know manafort was head of the mob. very unfair. fair or not, manafort finds himself in jail behind bars awaiting trial. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. new to the brewing dispute over an expensive piece of art after a little boy had a very big accident. alex perez has the story. >> reporter: this surveillance video in kansas capturing every parent's nightmare. watch as this 5-year-old reaches for an art sculpture on display at a community center, toppling the piece knocking the boy down, too. the boy's mother sarah goodman stunned, but the real shock coming days later.

>> no one would ever expect to come into a place where kids are invited and have to worry about a $132,000 piece of art falling. >> reporter: the family receiving an eye popping $132,000 claim from the city of overland park's insurance company. the fall allegedly damaging the piece beyond repair. the insurance letter reading in part, you're responsible for the supervision of a minor child. your failure to monitor could be considered negligent. >> i was surprised more so offended to be called negligent. >> reporter: city officials say the piece was secured. >> it is not an interactive piece. so when you have somebody climbing on it, that is not what it is built for. >> reporter: the artist says the sculpture cannot be repaired. the city says they hope the insurance company can work this out with the family. alex perez, abc news, chicago. new developments in the cleanup of the former hunter's point naval ship yard in san francisco.

the u.s. navy is now going to pay to retest soil samples after two whistleblowers from the original company admitted they faked samples and falsified records. for decades the hunter's point neighborhood has been undergoing testing and removal of radioactive waste from navy ships previously involved in nuclear testing. the state's department of public health will run the tests starting next month. in alameda, a lot of the talk is about the local golf course that has undergone ad incredible makeover. wayne freedman has a preview of the golf complex set to open next week. >> reporter: games of golf usually begin with balls on tees, not dignitaries, ribbons and scissors. but they do fit for what people call a miracle in alameda. not to this father/son head to head battle between joe and glenn. >> he beat me i think when he was 12 first time and i don't

today's festival is on filmore street between golden gate avenue and gary boulevard. the parade starts at 11:00 this morning on fulton. the festival runs from 11:00 to 6:00. san jose mayor will be at the juneteenth celebration, it andy id bran yeao 7:00 tonht. adliner. the juneteenth festival starts at 1:00 this afternoon. nine local dmv offices will be open today. the goal is to ease those long lines brought on by people applying for new licenses that can be used at airport security checkpoints. they are called real i.d.s. the offices will be open today and next saturday june 23rd from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. beginning in july these offices will be open the first and third saturdays of the month. driving tests will not be offered during these special hours. in the bay area, the concord, hayward, claremont avenue office, redwood city, san francisco, san jose processing center, santa clara and santa rosa i haves will be open.
