>> this is abc 7 mornings. good morning everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, june 17th. happy father's day. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist frances dinglasan in for lisa this morning. we have had a little bit of drizzle in the santa cruz mountains. just a few hundredths of an inch. most of us under the gray clouds from live doppler 7 and the satellite image on top of it. so it's a gray start to the morning. we still could see some drizzle over the next few hours. it will mainly be in the santa cruz mountains. temperatures in the 50s. breezy still by noon and clearing out. at the coast, you'll find stronger breezes, though. by this afternoon. sun and clouds. temperatures similar to yesterday. so inland near 80 around the bay. low 70s at the coast.

mid to upper 50s. sunsets at 8:33. nag to dampen outdoor plans with the drizzle in the santa cruz mountai mountains. get ready for a warmup through the workweek. i'll tell you about that coming up. we have breaking news out of new jersey this morning. at least one person is dead, 20 people are injured after a shootout at a 24-hour art event in trenton. shots fired around 2:45 this morning local time at what they call art all night. organizers say it promotes artistic diversity. the person killed, a 33-year-old man, is a suspect in the shoog. another suspect is in custody. multiple people opened fire in the shooting and police have recovered multiple weapons. sniemts a . >> all of a sudden my brother goes is that fireworks?

no, that's gunfire. everybody is running down the street. >> police say one of the people being treated was in extremely critical condition. the rest of the event has been canceled. berkeley police are investigating a fatal drown. a man was pulled from the water near the berkeley ma rinne after apparently falling out of his canoe. abc reporter lisa amin gulezian has the details. >> reporter: the u.s. coast guard rushed to the berkeley marina by air and by sea. after a call came in before 6:00 of a man's body floating in the water. christopher hollis pulled the unmanned outrigger canoe from the water after calling 911. i'm sorry for him. what was he doing out here this time of day in the wind. >> the crew that landed from the helicopter searched the vessel. they found the man's vest, a few personal items inside and an oar. >> i was hoping it wasn't a body. but every time the wave pressed,

you could see something. in the end, i got down to him. almost didn't see him. >> they pulled the man from the water and took him to shore. >> the coroner's office will transport him to the coroner's division where they'll try and identify him. they'll 'neath notify the next of kin. >> lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. the controversy continues this morning over the trump administration's policy of separating children and parents who are undocumented immigrants. there are also unaccompanied minors, those children who cross the border by themselves and need help with legal proceedings to stay in this country. a bay area charity has hit the soccer field to weekend to try to raise money for those kids. abc 7 news carlos saucedo has the story. among them undocumented youth who came to this country

by themselves. >> i'm so glad that they send me here and they leave me here in the united states. four years ago, car lily aguilar fled guatemala and made the tough decision to leave everyone and everything behind for a better life on her own. >> i miss my parents. but i know that i am good here better than guatemala. >> it's story's like hers that prompted catholic charities to put on the tournament. spanish for soccer with a heart. the event raises money for unaccompanied minors who cross the border but face an uphill battle seeking asylum. it was a nice reprieve for kids who can't play outside in their home country because of the violence. >> it's unsafe to go outside. they have gangs, they have a lot of violence. they cannot do that. they don't have the privilege to go outside and play. >> that's why many of the immigrant children risk their

own lives trying to cross. >> i tell the police if they want to send me back, sebd me to another country but not guatemala and not to mexico. >> she no longer has to live in fear. they helped her obtain asylum and is now a permanent resident. >> carlos saucedo, abc 7 news. president trump is trying to shift the focus to stopping criminals. this follows the department of homeland security announcing that nearly 2,000 children have been separated from their parents during the past two months alone. many of these children wind up in tent cities near america's border with mexico. president trump challenged democrats in his weekly address. >> ms-13 gang members are truly and you've heard me say it, animals. yet, nancy pelosi and washington

democrats continue to protect them and to push for open borders. >> the president with one swipe of his pen could end this policy tomorrow. >> and the trump administration insists that the detained children are being well-cared for. california is one of seven states allowing medically aided deaths for the terminally ill. after being chal nengd court last mornt, the so-called right to die law has been reinstated, at least for now. dion lim spoke to a bay area man whose late wife was the reason the law was enacted in the first place. >> it's frustrating because this law in effect for two years has been working. >> it's because of dan diaz and the woman he still calls his wife, brittany menard, the law is in effect. brittany suffered from brain cancer and made the decision to move their family to oregon in order to die with the assistance of a life ending

drug. she passed away in november of 2014. >> it's significant for me. i remember what she was going through and the chaos she was having to endure of leaving our home and move to another state. >> in the laws for six months, just over 100 californians exercised their right to day. a study shows 76% support the legislation. but last month, a riverside county judge declared the law unconstitutional. >> it put a stay on the lower court's ruling while this appeals process goes forward. >> attorney john eisenberg has been watching the case closely and represents several terminally ill patients who want to die with dignity. >> i think a lot of terminally ill people throughout the state right now are breathing a big sigh of relief. because they know that they can use the end of life option. >> he knows this is the >> this is the promise i made to brittany. so that no terminally ill individual would ever have to go

through what she went through. >> dion lim, abc 7 news. now, we reached out to several groups that oppose the right to die law. we did not get a response. police in american canyon believe they've identified a car belonging to someone in a rash of vandalism. we told you about this on abc 7 news. home security cameras captured video of a dark blue car appears to be a dodge charger. the car may be connected to someone shooting out the windows of 2 dozen vehicles between 2:00 and 4:00 friday morning. detectives are now urging all-american canyon residents to check their home security cameras to see if there's anyone they see shooting at parked cars. a grassfire that broke out in concord yesterday afternoon quickly grew to 25 acres. it took fire crews more than two hours to fully contain the flames burning along the road

between willow pass court and driftwood drive. our walnut creek camera captured the black smoke rising beyond those trees. the chp shut down traffic in the area while firefighters gained control. those winds are also responsible for knocking down trees. take a look at this one in campbell. it was ripped from the ground at its base before toppling on to parked cars near the entrance of the courtyard by marriott on creekside way. police tweeted these photos to warn residents of the high wind dangers. an even bigger mess in martinez yesterday when this 100-foot heritage oak fell on to a two-story home on ferry street near brown street taking down power poles and lines with it. the falling tree uprooted the sidewalk, crushed several vehicles causing the truck to catch fire. there were no reports of injuries. residents sheltered in place until pg&e crews secured hot

developing news in russia. moscow police are investigating a taxi cab crash that sent eight people to the hospital, including two mexican world cup fans. the cab crashed into pedestrians along a sidewalk near red square. the driver telling police he fell asleep at the wheel, accidentally hit the gas. moscow police would not comment whether the crash would affect security measures for the world cup. the use of vehicles as weapons has been a security concern. the mexican embassy says the two injured female fans were not hospitalized. details on the other victims have not been released. three hikers are safe after being stranded for more than 11 hours on a rocky cliffside in

pacifica. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard shows us their dramatic and challenging rescue. >> reporter: a dramatic rescue unfolding saturday morning on a cliff high above the pacific. >> are you okay? >> reporter: three hikers cold, but okay, happy to be back on safe, solid ground. firefighters say a 23-year-old man and his two 13-year-old relatives were stranded on this pacifica cliffside overnight. >> they went out for a late hike and i guess the tide came in and they had to get to higher ground to get past that. just ended up stranded on the cliff. >> how to rescue the trio, a challenge for first responders. darkness and the weather working against them. >> the chp helicopter made numerous attempts yesterday. due to windy conditions, it's not possible. >> reporter: but at 10:00 a.m. winds died down and the rescue began.

the chopper plucking each hiker off the cliff using a basket delivering them safely to the beach below. seasoned hikers who witnessed the rescue say stay off this cliff. >> i'm not calling you kooks. but it's a kook thing to do what they're doing. it's all about safety out here. >> parents of the teen girls sending a big thank you to rescuers. >> throughout the night, they kept us really informed. grateful for our first responders. >> kids are okay? >> kid are great. >> what do you have to say to the harbor patrols? >> thank you. >> hiking only on marked trails. avoid hiking at night and always be aware of your surroundings. in pacifica, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. a dixon man is hailed as a hero after he helped lift a truck off a woman's foot. it happened at 7 flags car wash. it's on east mont visa avenue in vacaville. jesse landers was vacuuming his car and he heard a crash in one of the stalls. a sedan slammed into the back of the truck pushing the back left tire on to its driver's foot. car wash employees used a jack

to lift the truck off the woman, but it would not go high enough. >> heard her screaming. i could tell she was in pain. i put myself in that situation. i would want someone to help me. i decided to help her. i ended up getting in front of her. i lifted the rims and got it up high enough where she was able to get her foot out. >> landers thinks he lifted it up about 6 inches. he dead lifts 400 pounds but believes adrenaline helped in this case. the woman is okay and out of the hospital. this is video captured when a tesla burst into flames in los angeles. the car belongs to hollywood director and producer. no one was hurt. his wife says it was not in an accident before the fire broke out. tesla called it an extraordinary

unusual occurrence. the company is investigating. this follows other incidents involving tesla, including a deadly accident in mountain view that raised questions about the car's self-driving system. it's not clear if this tesla was on autopilot. dozens of people showed up for each other and their east bay community yesterday. abc 7 news was in oakland for oakland hands around lake merritt. it celebrates the power of a united equitable city. they've been asked to form a circle and join hands to uplift those experiencing marginalization in housing and food insecurity. >> really just about love. it's about getting a chance to see your community members. >> we are in this together as a species. so if some one of us is a gresing against the other, it's an opportunity to say, we can do better and we will.

>> organizers say they're planning another event next month. ♪ abc 7 news was in san francisco when music filled the air at one of the bay area's longest running street festivals. this marks the 64th year for the north beach festival attracting thousands of people who enjoy music, shopping and food. one of the people selling crafts shares why she thinks the festival is so special. >> i feel like the crowd is a lot of locals. but then you have the tourists and the people that have actually come. i feel like there's a lot of history here. >> the north beach festival is open from 10:00 until 6:00. the annual blessing of the animals at the shrine of st. fra sis assisi in a vallejo is at 2:00 this afternoon. good morning, i'm meteorologist frances dinglasan.

we're seeing gray skies over the bay area. we've had drizzle this morning in the santa cruz mountains. we could still see some in the next couple of hours. i also want to take you to the tahoe area where there's been thunderstorm activity, some rainfall. even the areas of pink and white. we could see a light dusting of snow. only at 9,000 feet. here's a live shot in the area. this is from our heavenly camera. lake tahoe. you can see some of the clouds there as well. this trough is moving east. this is what's also bringing us a southerly flow and all these gray clouds. we're looking now at the san francisco area. bay bridge there from exploratorium camera. it's going to be gray for a while. temperatures in the 50s for the most part. san francisco 55. oakland 57. san jose 57 as well. gilroy cooler at 53 degrees. from emeryville, gray and soupy, a little bit of this june gloom as we look towards the bay and san francisco. lots of temperatures mainly in the mid 50s right now.

some low 50s out there like santa rosa 53. mid-50s through napa. novato, fairfield, concord at 59. livermore at 55 degrees. i want to take you to the forecast animation of what you can expect today for father's day. so we still have cloud cover even during the 8:00 hour. notice this little bit of green in the swanton area. we'll see possible drizzle in the santa cruz mountains. now, the winds will be coming from the southwest and as air moves down slope on the wind, we'll start to see clearing faster in the south bay and also in the east bay. by 5:00 this evening, we'll see clouds at the coast. so you should be able to do anything outdoors if you want for father's day. that drizzle has been confined to the santa cruz mountains. once again, we could see some rain heavy at times in the reno and truckee area.

highs ranging from upper 50s to near 80. once again, similar to yesterday's temperatures. breezy but hopefully not as breezy as yesterday. the winds should be relaxing. we still could see a strong gust. fran, mid-60s there and oakland 69 degrees. san jose 75 degrees. lots of mid-70s through the north bay. santa rosa, san rafael, napa. low 50s againtonight. cooler temperatures in parts of the north bay like santa rosa and napa. i want to give you an idea of what the models are saying. we could see 90s in the inland areas. check out saturday near 100 degrees. these are just models giving us an idea of what to expect. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. so today a little bit cooler than average, especially for inland areas and around the bay again. the drizzle in the mountains. it's going to be mild on

skies look like. it's a beautiful shot looking out towards the bay, almost like a monet. we're dealing with the chance of drizzle but mainly confined to the santa cruz mountains. temperatures in the 50s for father's day. during the 7:00 hour. by noon, breaks in the cloud cover. still breezy, though. accepts at the coast. by this afternoon, a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures on the cool side inland near 80 degrees. around the bay, near 70. at the coast, once again, cool mid to upper 50s. sunsets at 8:33. enjoy the day. although it's not as warm as you might like, we've got a big warmup coming up this weekend. i'll tell you more about that with the seven-day forecast. thank you, frances. now to the new pressure building on michael cohen. abc news learned that a grand jury witness indicates a special counsel, robert mueller -- appears to remain focused on president trump's ex-lawyer.

this has paul manafort remains in jail. abc news white house correspondent tara palmieri has the latest developments. michael cohen could be in the crshairs. many of the special counsel's questions to him focused on the former personal attorney of the president. >> i did nothing wrong. you have to understand, this would have come out a long time ago. >> this comes as sources tell abc news that cohen may cooperate with prosecutors in a separate federal probe into his business dealings in the hush payment he made to porn star stormy daniels. prosecutors revealing they have accessed hundreds of pages of cohen's encrypted texts. pieced together 16 pages of his shredded documents. we spoke to rudy giuliani by phone. he tells us that the president -- the deputy attorney general assured the president he wasn't be touched by that investigation. >> we've been told by rosenstein the president is not involved in

that investigation and we have no reason to believe that could possibly change unless somebody decided to lie or somebody decided to try to frame us. >> paul manafort a target in the special counsel's investigation, spending his first night in a federal prison. placed in vip housing, away from the general population where he'll await trial. this after his house arrest was ended. on friday, giuliani all suggesting it could be cleaned up with a pardon and later clarifying his remarks. >> he's not going to pardon anybody in this investigation but he's not going to give up his right to pardon if a miscarriage of justice is -- >> anything to -- >> of course he could. of course, he could. >> giuliani also telling abc if trump answers mueller's questions, it likely won't be in person. >> i think we would prefer questions and written answers the way ronald reagan did. >> tara palmpalmieri, abc news,

washington. coming up, steve bannon will give his first sunday morning show interview since leaving the white house. you can catch the full interview at 8:00 this morning on this week with george stephanopoulos here on abc 7. police in indiana are investigating a shooting that has killed the brother of a sacramento kings basketball player. roger randolph. brother of zack randolph was shot and killed early yesterday morning outside a bar about 60 miles from indianapolis. investigators don't know what led up to the shooting but don't think it was a random attack. police have not identified any suspects and so far no arrests have been made. new developments about a plan to create a citywide broadband internet service for all san francisco residents and businesses. the project will not be moving forward. it's been put on hold. the examiner reports outgoing

mayor mark ferrell will not -- to fund the project. he had until tuesday to do that. the project is short of the 2/3 need today pass. they will continue to research how market conditions and construction would affect such a project. this is bound to make you feel guilty for buying your dad a tie for father's day. a florida woman gave her father a . he desperately needed a second kidney transplant after the one he received four years ago was showing signs of failure. his daughter was a 100% match for a donation. >> i was really feeling worse than i ever felt before. my body was double the size i am now. >> he didn't look well. i didn't know how much time he had, honestly. it's hard for a child to look at your parent and say that. >> doctors say this was the

we're dealing with lots of low clouds. live doppler 7 and the satellite image shows the inland push of all the low clouds. the difference is the winds are coming from the south this time. we normally get them from the northwest. as they come from the south and they go downhill into the south bay and into the east bay, we'll see the down sloping air flow warms and dries up faster. it should be clearing there sooner. we'll take you out live to the shot. get a lot of sunshine early on. head over to the bay, still pretty gray looking towards the bay bridge. temperatures are mainly in the 50s around the bay area, san francisco 55, oakland 57, san jose 57 as well. gilroy, cooler at 53 degrees. this time, we're looking from our san rafael camera. we're looking east towards the sunri sunrise. notice the clouds coming from the south. a little different of a flow
