and claims he was set up by the fbi. and much of the northeast are under heat advisories. temperatures will reach 100 in some areas. that's 10 to 15 degrees above average. those are some of your top stories this monday, june 18. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to all of you. we begin the half hour with the deadly earthquake in western japan. >> at least five people are dead and a little girl is among the victims. the 9 year old was killed when a wall outside her school collapsed on her. an elderly man was killed when a bookshelf fell on him. dozens of people have been injured. >> it started several fires and caused 170,000 power outages. it hit during morning rush hour. rail and subway services were suspended. many flights were also delayed. and here at home, the battle over immigration is heading into a very important stretch this week. >> house lawmakers are scheduled to vote on two different reform plans.

meanwhile, protests are being held across the country against the trump administration's policy of separating parents from their children after crossing the border illegally. >> in a rare move, first lady melania trump weighed in through her spokesperson saying she hoped both sides can come together to achieve successful immigration reform. she believes we should follow all laws but also be a country that governs with heart. but the administration says its zero tolerance is necessary to deter immigrants from coming here illegally. >> when a u.s. parent is prosecuted from violating a law and that u.s. citizen parent is accompanied by children, they are separated from those children as they go through a judicial process. >> at least five people believed to be in the u.s. illegally were killed when a suv they were riding in crashed in south texas.

more than a dozen people were in the vehicle when it crashed. most of them were ejected onto the road. and president trump heads to capitol hill tomorrow to discuss immigration with lawmakers. some members of congress confronted the issue over the weekend. brad mielke has more. >> hey, guys, we're talking immigration a lot lately. but recently members of congress have been asking to see places where immigrants are detained. congressman palone went to a center and signed up for a visitor's pass, and after two hours of waiting he got in. >> these guys were crying on father's day because they don't know where their children are. some have no idea. some have been told, maybe they're in michigan. none of them have had contact with them. and there's no process under the homeland security or i.c.e. to have them be notified where the kids are when they're taken or they have no idea if they're ever going to be communicating

with them again. the other thing i wanted to stress, these are people who came here for political asylum. they didn't come here for economic reasons looking for a job. they came here because they were fleeing persecution. >> he says they were seeking asylum. folks in the trump administration say you don't have to cross the border illegally to do that. we'll get into it all on "start here" later this morning. check it out on apple podcast or your favorite podcasting app. more than 600 migrants are in the spanish port of valencia. they arrived after a week-long voyage over rough seas. they arrived on three ships and were greeted by applause from police and health workers. there was clapping and singing aboard the ships. they are promised free health care. the migrants include dozens of pregnant women and children. and a freight car carrying propane exploded during an

accident in princeton, indiana. police went door to door within a one-mile radius telling residents to get out. no injuries are reported, but u.s. highway 41 has been closed in that area. in new jersey, what started out as an all-day, all-night festival showcasing art and music and movies ended in gunfire which is believed to be gang-related. maggie rulli has the details. >> reporter: the cellphone video captures the chaos. police say at least two suspects began shooting at each other. the crowd of 1,000 is caught in the middle of their gunfight. at least 22 are injured, including a 13-year-old boy. and irving higginbotham who was shot four times in the leg. >> hurt, burning. >> reporter: one of the alleged shooters was shot and killed on

the scene. 23-year-old amir armstrong is now in custody and facing charges. the men turning art all night, a community event meant for families, into a violent tragedy. local leaders are demanding action. >> this isn't just a random act of violence. this is a public health issue. >> i was very surprised. in an area that's supposed to be a safe space and a safe area. it's disheartening. >> reporter: but the community is promising not to give up. in a statement, the organizers of the festival say our hearts ache but our dedication and resolve to building a better trenton will never fade, not ever. police stress they don't think the festival was a target in any way, and the people here enjoying art were sadly caught up in the gunfight. maggie rulli, abc news, trenton, new jersey. the first trial against monsanto over the weedkiller roundup begins today. thousands of cancer patients are suing the company saying it caused their non-hodgkins lymphoma.

monsanto denies the claim. dwayne johnson's suit is the first to go to trial. california law allows expedited processing of lawsuits if the patient is dying and it could set the precedent for other suits. and one of those injured in the rollercoaster accident in florida is speaking out. two victims fell more than 30 feet when the ride veered off the tracks. six others on the ride were stuck high above the daytona beach boardwalk. one woman from kentucky bounced off support beams as she fell. when she regained consciousness, all she saw was chaos. >> i'll never forget it in my life. there was people still on the ride screaming. there were the two that were in front of me, dangling out of it or the one was dangling. the other was pinned and everyone was screaming and crying and it was terrifying. >> she herself suffered a long list of injuries.

she's hired an attorney. safety inspectors had taken that rollercoaster out of service the month before but allowed it to resume operating after the problems were corrected. the state says the ride was inspected again just hours before the crash. a california couple had a big hairy burglar that wasn't just smarter than the average bear. it's pretty nimble, too. >> elaine and carroll were more than a little surprised to see who came to visit. a big bear made it through their not-so-big window in tahoe. check it out. >> it was determined. >> it wriggles its way. >> one of their friends told them about the four-legged home invader. >> i thought she was kidding. and then i thought, oh, no. it's tahoe. it could be. she looked frightened. very scared. >> so the bear apparently made a number of trips through the window before the humans got home. this is the second time the same bear has broken into the same home in the past year.

there's an urgent manhunt under way in southern illinois for two escaped prisoners. >> they managed to break out of their cell through a concrete and brick wall. adrian bankert has more. >> reporter: authorities on the hunt for two of three inmates who escaped through this manmade hole at an illinois jail, breaking through concrete and brick. the inmates seen on video hours before carrying out their daring getaway. >> they used some pipe we think was obtained from our privacy area for the shower areas, and they managed to batter and push that through. >> reporter: one of the two escapees still on the run, zachary shock awaiting trial on a first degree murder charge. the third escapee, justin gray caught late saturday after he jumped into this river. his getaway driver arrested after crashing at the water's edge. her identity still unknown. >> jail officers meet with me at

out were covered in debris and impassable. the hardest hit was houghton. the flooding there has been called historic. >> more storms are in the forecast for today along with serious heat. let's go to paul williams. >> we are looking for a hot surge to overtake the northeast ohio valley region and mid atlantic region. this is how hot it's going to be. forecasted high will reach the record high in philadelphia, new york, boston and just shy of that in d.c. then we brace for monday afternoon and monday evening. severe thunderstorms throughout vermont, new hampshire. up toward montreal. and another round of thunderstorms in the north central part of the country as well. now to the battle raging over immigration policy that's separating children from parents. >> the u.s. border patrol has allowed reporters into a facility in mcallen, texas.

when the suv they were riding in crashed while fleeing border patrol agents. the suv was carrying more than a dozen people, most believed to be in the u.s. illegally. the crash was so violent most of the passengers were ejected from the vehicle. one of president trump's long-time advisers admits he met with a russian national during the 2016 campaign who promised to provide dirt on hillary clinton. roger stone says the russian who identified himself as henry greenberg wanted $2 million for the damaging information and stone tells abc news he thought the idea was idea was ludicrous and the deal never happened. stone also claims the whole meeting was a fbi setup. and rudy giuliani says president trump has no plans to issue any pardons in the russia investigation right now but adds the president could do so when the investigation is over, especially if he decides anyone involved has been treated unfairly. and he says when the president talks about potential pardons, he is not sending a message to

paul manafort or anyone else to refrain from cooperating with prosecutors. at least three people are dead after an earthquake in osaka, japan. the 6.1 hit during this morning's commute. train and subway service in the city was suspended. it also caused several building fires. thousands are without power. one of the fatalities was a 9-year-old girl who was reportedly killed when a wall at her school collapsed. no tsunami warning has been issued because the quake was inland. the taliban is refusing to suspend a cease-fire. two suicide bombers may have been the work of isis. ian pannell is in kabul. >> reporter: it was a shattering blow to two days of relative peace in afghanistan. the suicide bomb attack in the eastern city of jalalabad. killing at least 19, more wounded. the last three days will be remembered not for war but peace. an unprecedented cease-fire by the men with the white flag.

the taliban, here joining police men, soldiers and civilians to celebrate the holiday at the end of ramadan. this incredible video was unimaginable days ago. when these two sworn enemies were trying to kill each other. a taliban fighter and an american-trained afghan special forces soldier dancing. the government says it wants to extend the cease-fire. america backs it. people are relaxed. people are happy. they've had three days of unprecedented cease-fire between the taliban and the government. they were starting to think perhaps it could last. after 17 long and bloody years of war, they deserve nothing less. the taliban said they will not extend their cease-fire, and already we're getting reports of a fresh wave of attacks against government forces, but the will

of the people is clear. they want peace and they want it now. the question is whether the taliban can afford to ignore that. ian pannell, abc news, kabul. in europe, not everyone is happy over the name macedonia. protesters are protesting the resolution of an ongoing dispute. the country will be known as north macedonia. the northern province of greece will be known as macedonia. but the dispute had blocked northern macedonia's participation in several international organizations. and a conservative political newcomer has been elected president of colombia. he got 54% of the vote. his opponent had the best showing for the left. he be the youngest president in more than a century and is vowing to overhaul a peace agreement with leftist rebels. back at home a dad in north carolina gave himself an incredible father's day present by saving his son's life.

>> cameras captured the moment when the boy collapsed during gym class. turns out he was in cardiac arrest. he started to perform cpr. >> whether it was my child or not, i would have done the same thing. you get down and do what you have to do to save someone's life. >> a nurse grabbed an automatic defibrillator. shocked cameron back to life. >> it took a few seconds, but his dad says cameron was wide awake and alert by the time ems arrived. good thing the dad and nurse did not hesitate. dad said he did what anyone else would do. >> that's what any dad would do. he thought his son had twisted an ankle and he saw his son go limp. jumped right into action. >> at first it looked like a normal injury, then realized he was completely unconscious. glad that one ended okay. coming up, we're going to

[ bleep ]. >> reporter: samuel said he was rushed by ambulance to el camino hospital after collapsing in basketball practice monday. after waiting more than three hours to be seen -- >> i'm sorry, sir, you are the least sick of all the people who are here who are dying. >> reporter: he said he was numb and in extreme pain and having trouble breathing. >> i told her i could not inhale. >> he can't inhale, wow. he must be dead. are you dead, sir? i don't understand. you are breathing just fine. >> reporter: from there, the tension escalated, unprovoked. >> no. you have changed your story every [ bleep ] time. >> whoa. >> reporter: the hospital ceo saying in a statement that the physician's demeanor was unprofessional and not the standard we require of all who provide care through el camino hospital. we've expressed our sincere apologies and are working with the patient on this matter.

>> in my mind, i don't think she should be practicing medicine at all. if it's not a race thing, and she treats everybody that way, that's a problem. >> reporter: the hospital ceo went on to say the doctor will never be allowed to work at any branches of the hospital group again. we've not been able to reach the doctor for comment. meanwhile, bardwell plans to file a lawsuit. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> and doctors say he was suffering from a severe anxiety attack which can present very similar symptoms to a heart attack, but the hospital has issued their apologies to the family. they say they're working with the patient on this matter. >> he says he was waiting for a doctor for three hours, and when she showed up, she showed up accompanied by a security guard. this was bad all the way around. >> not what you expect, especially when you wait that long to see a physician. coming up, a warning about a
