as we learn where babies separated from their parents are being taken. but first, abc's stephanie ramos with the new developments from washington. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning. the president's zero tolerance policy on immigration has managed to unify republicans and democrats in congress, but the majority saying they want an end to the policy. president trump on capitol hill, meeting with republican lawmakers, calling america's immigration system broken. >> the immigration system has been a really bad, bad system. probably the worst anywhere in the world. >> reporter: sources inside the meeting room tell abc news trump only weighed in for a little bit on immigration, adding that his daughter ivanka showed him images of children in detention facilities and encouraged him to end the policy. but then, trump talked about poll numbers and north korea.

leaving members uncertain about how he wants them to vote. but the president is not reversing his zero tolerance policy. as he walked out of the meeting, house democrats waited for him. >> quit separating the kids. mr. president, don't you have kids? >> reporter: we're now learning of a 10-year-old mexican girl that was separated from her mother along with her brother after crossing the border. the little girl has down syndrome and is now in the shelter alone. here's what corey lewandowski had to say about the girl's situation on fox news. >> >> i read today about a 10-year-old girl with down syndrome taken from her mother and put in a cage -- >> womp, womp. >> did you say that? >> reporter: the girl's father lives in the united states and they're looking to reunite them. the consensus from lawmakers is that not one of these immigration bills will actually pass, members will have create

separate legislation to deal specifically with the family issue and there's no guarantee president trump will support that. >> all right, that's the big question right there. stephanie ramos, thank you. and we're also learning what happens to the youngest immigrants, babies taken to tender age shelters in texas. they're reportedly so crowded, a fourth shelter is now opening in texas. medical providers describe rooms of crying children traumatized after being separated from their parents. new firsthand accounts from migrants in the system, a mother from el salvador said she fled home with her 8-year-old son because kidnappers threatened to take him unless she paid a ransom. she says her asylum request at the u.s. border was denied. she's now at a prison near seattle, while her son has been transferred to a home in upstate new york, and she says she's not been able to speak with him. one report estimates that u.s. officials have lost track of

6,000 migrant children in recent month often because their sponsors won't return phone calls. homeland security secretary kirstjen has defended the law but she was heckled by protesters while eating dinner at a mexican restaurant in d.c. >> shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame! >> and roughly about the same time, trump was tweeting about nielsen, saying that she did a fabulous job at her press briefing on monday. even though she contradicted e theed a min stras's statement that it's meant to be a deterrent to migrants. coming up in just a few minutes the story of how one migrant mother is taking on the trump administration as she searches for her son. and the united states has become the first country to voluntarily withdraw from the united nations human rights council. ambassador haley announced the move, on what she calls the

council's anti-israel bias. israel's prime minister calls the move courageous. asian markets rebounded overnight despite lingering concerns -- despite tariff dispute between the u.s. and china. president trump is threatening to impose new taxes on $250 billion on chinese imports. they say that the new threat is an act of self-defense against the china's trade policies. the dow had a rough day. it's going to start out 287 points lower on this wednesday morning, wiping out the gains this year. one company in the dow general electric is now being dropped from the index, ge has been a part of the blue chip average since 1907. the company stock price has fallen 78% in the last two decades. it's being replaced in the dow by wahl greens. outrage is growing in east pittsburgh after video shooting -- show police shoot at least

a brawl, reportedly fighting over calls made by the umpire. both teams have now been disqualified from the tournament even though no players or coaches were involved in the fight. american airlines said it could be days before it sorts out the chaos caused by a computer glitch. as many as 1,000 stranded passengers have been sleeping in charlotte's airport. a failed system has caused 2500 flights have been cancelled since last week, thursday. the problem is affecting psa airlines which handles american airlines' regional routes in that area. a broken water main created a soggy scene at the mandalay bay in las vegas. the water flowed into the resort's convention center. there's no structural damage. north of the border, canada's parliament has legalized the recreational use of marijuana, second country in the world to legalize the drug's recreational use.

right now, they're canvassing this neighborhood looking for other people they say were crossing over illegally. you may hear that helicopter, a national guard helicopter helping them in this search. we spent the entire day with border patrol agents, this part of the border is incredibly active with, they say with people, migrants trying to bring their families here and also drug traffickers trying to move narcotics into the u.s. we saw them when they raided a suspected stash house, they found seven men who they say were from mexico, who just crossed into the u.s. on tuesday morning. they were in that house for just two hours when authorities got the tip, they went in, they raided that home and they found those seven men. immigration advocates say most of the people who cross into this country illegally do so for safety and not to commit a crime, and this is just certainly an example of what the border patrol and what residents who live along the border deal with day in and day out. diane, kendis. >> our thanks to marcus. in the men time,

there's a new legal battle at the border, a mother from guatemala who was released on bond after crossing into the u.s. illegally, is now suing the trump administration, claiming border agents will not tell her where her son has been transferred. and we turn now to massachusetts, where a woman says she was nearly abducted while out jogging. she's now telling how she fought off the attacker. the incident all caught on camera. this morning, a woman describes the terrifying moments a man tried to abduct her while jogging. >> i instantly had a feeling wasn't good. j. >> reporter: watch as a car pulls in front of her in bridgewater, massachusetts. a man runs toward her. >> i tried to fight him off. he grabbed both arms, tried to pull me towards him. and kind of towards the vehicle, like he was trying to get in the vehicle. >> reporter: she said she fought back as the man was pulling her

toward the car. >> he was grabbing at me. i just kept kicking back behind me. i'm not even sure i was making contact with him. i was just trying to prevent him from getting a further hold on me. >> reporter: she says the man finally gave up and the police said her quick thinking also helped them catch him. >> she had the presence of mind to use her phone to take a picture to help law enforcement catch the individual. >> reporter: police say the man identified as gordon lyons. a convicted rapist. lyons was arrested a short time later after crashing his car. the victim is also thanking an 84-year-old bystander for helping her out. lyons entered a not guilty plea. the woman was wearing sunscreen which witnesses said made it hard for the suspect to grab her. a school district in new jersey is being sued over a student's suicide. mallory grossman's parents said the school didn't do enough to protect their daughter from bullying.

the 12-year-old took her life last year. the suit says mallory was bullied for months by four classmates. her parents say the school officials ignored their pleas to punish the bullies. >> i really want the schools to understand the gravity of what has happened. mallory isn't a two-minute news story, she's our daughter. she's forever gone. >> it's a different world today. completely different world than it was 30, 40 years ago. this lawsuit needs to be a huge wake-up call for everybody. >> mallory's parents say the other children still have not been disciplined. the school district denies a claim that it never addressed the bullying. and a suspected criminal is giving new meaning to the phrase it was written all over his face. police in north carolina arrested michael vines after he was involved in a car crash and tried to hide an illegal gun he had with him. a guy in the front row of
