breaking news from our live desk, a van slamming into a san francisco apartment. one person is seriously injured and the safety of the building is in question right now. in fact, a lot of people are evacuated from their homes. a lot going on at 6:00 a.m. thank you for being with us on this wednesday, june 20th. we want to start with meteorologist mike nicco. it's another cool start to the day. >> it is, and a gray one at that. high everybody. here is a look at the winds, 32 miles per hour at fairfield. south sea breeze, all the gray, that's the cloudiness taking over our neighborhoods. you can see from the exploratorium camera at pier 15, going to be a great one with low to upper 50s. temperatures almost identical to where they were yesterday at this time. in fact, when we end the day, it will almost be exactly like yesterday. i hope you enjoyed yesterday. let's talk about your noontime temperatures, dress for 56 at the coast, 66 to 72. 74 to only 80 around the bay and inland at 4:00. back to 67 and 70, comfortable evening along the way. the heat is in the accuweather

seven-day forecast. here is alexis. the commute still looking pretty good this morning. we're looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza. yesterday a terrible day trying to get across the bay bridge. we had some construction that went until 5:00, that meant an early start for the bay bridge metering lights. today all that cleared much earlier and the metering lights at 5:20. that's the typical time we see that on a monday through thursday commute. westbound 80 highway 4 to the maze, 22 minutes, looking better, too. a 14-minute drive. southbound 101, san francisco to sf ofrmts. that's in the green at nine minutes. we'll head back to the south bay coming up next. breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> breaking news this morning, a van crashing into a building in san francisco. you can see how much damage there is. this is a live look at the scene, at least one person is hurt with life-threatening injuries. they're hospitalized right now. this happened about 2 1/2 hours ago, and you can see there's extensive damage to the

building. the crews are out there at this building on clement street and arguello boulevard trying to shore it up, trying to prevent it from collapsing. residents are evacuated. i want to show you the scene when crews first got there. no word on exactly how this happened. police say there was only one vehicle involved utilities were shot off due to safety concern. amy hollyfield is live on the scene. we'll check in with her at the bottom of the hour. >> the abc 7 news app sent out a push alert shortly after the van crashed into the apartment building in san francisco. you can be the first to know when breaking news happens where you live. download the app for free and make sure to enable push alerts. several bay area mayors are on the same page when it comes to separating families at our border. >> oak lapd mayor libby schaaf calling it ruthless and heartless urging state senators to support the keeping families

together act. san francisco mayor mark farrell is calling for clear, human reunification plans. state senator scott weiner tweeting this just after midnight. let's be clear. contractors that build baby cages and detention centers for immigrant kids shouldn't be allowed to do business with our state. he did not say if he's working on any sort of bill. what about the children in these so-called tender cages. psychologists we've talked to say they're clearly being abused. >> nearly 2,000 immigrant children have been separated from their children and held in fenced cages at a border facility. psychologists say this will leave a lasting impact on many of these children. we're basically traumatizing a whole cohort of children and families that won't go away when the border issues are resolved.

just to be clear. this is not a ban on powder. you're allowed to bring powder onto a plane, like baby powder or protein powder. you can put it in your checked luggage or carry-on bags. the tsa is recommending if you have powder in a container bigger than a soda can, you put it in your checked luggage. the "usa today" reports the tsa will request foreign airports to start looking at powders. the tsa has been doing that here in the u.s. since last summer. that will be from cosmetics to baby powder, protein or energy mixes. the main concern is for improvised explosives, but they're also concerned about powdery substances like fentanyl. live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. we are learning a san

francisco officer who shot and injured a man earlier this month was also involved in a deadly shooting six years ago. >> we'll show you some video. i node to warn you you may find this disturbing. [ gunshots ]. >> investigators say joshua cabillo is the officer who shot a suspect in the back in north beach on june 9th. body cam video shows a man running and tossing a gun before being shot. the officer was also involved in the controversial shooting of derrick gaines at a gas stakes. he claimed the teen was reaching for a gun. gaines did have a gun. it turned out to be inoperable. the d.a. did not file charges. police want to find this man seen on camera taking a puppy in san jose. you can see him. he held his hand up to the puppy before picking up that 6-week old husky-golden retriever mix.

the man left with the dog in an suv mercedes. it's pretty unique. it's black with yellow windshield wipers. the puppy has gray fur and a white tail. if you've seen the man, the dog or the suv, please contact san jose police. [ shouting ]. >> oh, boy. this brawl from a 12 and under girl's softball tournament in tennessee is circulating on social media. nearly a dozen parents from opposing teams in north carolina got into the fight on saturday. the 12-year-old girls screaming trying to keep the adults from fighting. organizers kicked both teams out of the tournament and future usa softball events. none of the parents got arrested. please moms and dads, get it together. horrible. >> we're getting a look at some of the rebuilding happening in areas devastated by last year's north bay wildfires.

>> drone view 7 flying over the hidden valley neighborhood. this among many neighborhoods devastated by the fires. erin brockovich's legendary battle against pg&e was made into a movie. she's been urging fire victims to take legal action. legal teams have taken dead aim on pg&e with billions of dollars in claims especially since recent reports by cal fire blame the you dilt's power lines for sparking the fires. >> i'm here for the people. oftentimes they'll be uncomfortable or they don't think they should get representation or need representation. that's not true. i want people to know their rights. >> we reached out to pg&e for reaction. they wrote in part, the loss of life, homes and businesses in these extraordinary wildfires is simply heartbreakingnd we remain focused on help rebuild. >> a blue whale that washed up

onshore died after getting hit by a vessel. it was first spotted saturday night and washed ab shore monday afternoon. blue whales are an endangered species and their primary threats are vessel strikes and entanglements. take a look. quite a surprise for a family in eden canyon right outside pasadena. this mamma bear and two cubs came lumbering from the forest for a dip in their fountain. the played in the water, had a great time. when they were done, they disappeared back in the woods. she said don't pes center me, this is mamma's time. >> i can't have five minutes? >> mamma spa. that looks like a great place to be this weekend. maybe not so much today in many neighborhoods. coming this weekend when the heat wave is coming on, absolutely. as a pr delays at sfo due to the low cloud deck. make shower to call ahead.

my accuweather highlights, great this morning, afternoon sunshine away from the coast. clouds will come back and keep us cool tonight. the last several nights even though the heightened heat risk. just like yesterday, from the san mateo bridge northward at noon, a few lingering clouds around and more solid as you head towards the coast. as we head into the 4:00 hour, just about everybody sunny except for the coast. by 7:00 you can see the clouds start to my great to the east once again for our overnight hours. we'll go to the 12-hour planner. sliding behind me you can see the highs from 58 at ingleside to downtown at 64 degrees. around the east bay, sunshine with a few lingering clouds. oakland, richmond, berkeley in the 60s. as we head towards the peninsula, san mateo northward mostly sunny. sunny southward. that's why we go from 58 in daly city to 78 in redwood city. in the south bay we or looking

at temperatures and feeling temperatures from 79 in milpitas, 79 in san jose. niebts for morgan hill and the north bay. our east bay valleys mid to upper 80s. here is my accuweather seven-day forecast. hottest temperatures friday and saturday. alexis. >> we are looking at the roads. so far today it's been quiet. one new issue in the southbound, northbound 680 off-ramp to capital avenue. we don't have many details yesterday. a vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree. chp is headed to the scene. we'll have more information. possibly a lane blocked on that exit ramp. bay bridge toll plaza, it is looking packed right now. stacked up as usual into the maze. not nearly as bad as the approaches were yesterday. of course, due to that road work that went until 5:00. that resulted in an early start for the metering lights. no repeat of that today. westbound 580 tracy to dublin one hour and three minutes.

wednesday, june 20th. >> you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. here is meteorologist mike nicco. >> a touch of gray outside. that's going to be the case. you can see it on live doppler 7. those are the low clouds that are going to be riding that sea breeze through the morning commute and keeping us in the low to mid 50s for the most part. as we head towards noon, the clouds will return to the coast. they'll still be the same clouds from about the san mateo bridge up towards maybe the bay bridge. we'll call it mostly sunny there. still cloudy at the coast. 56. sunny inland at 72. inland at 4:00, 80. 57 at the coast. nice eechlg on tap, 55 at the coast. 67 to 74. the rest of us, we'll see how your commute is shaping up. >> overall we've been pretty quiet today, mike. we are looking at one of our only trouble spots right now. that is northbound 680, the san jose area. we have reports of a vehicle into a tree off on the right shoulder. chp has arrived. they're saying that vehicle is

cold to the touch. this possibly happened several hours ago. no one is there around that vehicle. therefore, we don't have any injuries or lanes taken away either. looking pretty cloudy, southbound 101, folks coming across golden gate bridge. volumes starting to increase. overall, looking at a decent morning commute. if you're about to head out the door, you shouldn't run into many major problems. drive times coming up at 6:40. breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> that breaking news we've been tracking throughout the morning in san francisco. a van crashing into an apartment building. abc 7's amy hollyfield is live at clement and arguello on a wild scene very the van is still sitting in the garage. they did put wood here to stabilize the vehicle. they've left it like this for now. they'll leave this for the daytime crews to clean up. i do see a tow truk pulling up

right now. maybe they'll start, woulding on getting this van out of here. this happened at arguello and clement in san francisco's richmond district. it was about 3:30 this morning. the driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. residents say they could feel the building shake when the van hit. >> there was a lyft driver that stopped, was doing a drop-off over here. that thank goodness for that guy. he was the first one, he dialed 911 and checked on the guy. the guy was awake. we could hear him talking, telling us that he's injured and he's bleeding. >> reporter: no one else was hurt. residents tell me there are six units in this building. they had utilities shut off over a concern for safety. police need help asking why this happened. they're asking for any witnesses to please give them a call. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news.

>> thank you, amy. now to the ongoing crisis at the nation's border. >> the associated press reporting this morning babies and other young children forcibly separated from their children at the u.s.-mexico border are now being held at so-called tender age shelters. >> the shelters include rooms filled with crying preschool age children. >> president trump met with house republicans to chart strategy. >> abc reporter stephanie ramos live in washington, d.c. this morning. >> reporter: reggie and natasha, president trump's zero-tolerance policy has managed to unify republicans and democrats in congress with the majority saying they want an end to this policy. president trump on capitol hill meeting with republican lawmakers calling america's immigration system broken. >> the immigration system has been a really bad, bad system, probably the worst anywhere in the world. we're going to try to see if we

can fixes. >> reporter: sources inside the meeting room tell abc news trump only weighed in for a little bit on immigration, adding his daughter ivanka showed him images of the children in the detention facilities and encouraged him to end the policy. >> mr. president, don'ts you have kids? >> reporter: we're learning of a 10-year-old mexican girl separated from her mother along with her brother after crossing the border. the little girl has down syndrome and is in a shelter alone. here is what trump's former campaign manager had to say on fox news. >> i read today about a 10-year-old girl with down syndrome taken from her mother and put in a cage. >> wah-wah. >> reporter: the girl's father lives in the united states and has the status of a resident. authorities are working to reunite them. >> the youngest migrant children are being held in what's called

a tender age shelter. lawyers have described rooms full of crying children. the government plans to open a fourth shelter. stephanie ramos, abc news, washington. protesters heckled homeland security secretary kirstje nielsen last night. >> no borders, no walls, sanctuary for all. >> a group posted this video to facebook. the activists say they couldn't stand by and let her eat in peace while children are being torn from their parents. a spokesperson says she shares activists' concerns about current immigration laws that have created a crisis on our southern border. a facebook campaign to help reunite undocumented immigrant parents separated from their children has raised $9 million. this is more than double from when we checked in yesterday morning, up just about $600,000 since we checked in at 4:30.

facebook's earlier employees started the campaign on sunday. for more information about the immigration debate, you can go to our website, abc7news.com. now developing news in the east bay. san leandro police are investigating a deadly stabbing that may have started as a bar fight. police arrived at the safeway parking lot late last night on juana avenue and found two men stabbed. one died on the scene. the other is in critical condition. officers say four men came out of the nearby sons of liberty bar and got into a fight. it's unclear what started it. investigators say they're looking at surveillance video. san francisco leaders and b.a.r.t. officials scheduled to announce a joint plan -- >> you may remember this video of drug users shooting up inside a station and put pressure on b.a.r.t. to make changes. b.a.r.t. has staff inside elevators that have been used as tail let's in the past. there are so many homeless

individuals in and around the station that outreach teams are being recruited. you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. low to mid 50s for most of the south bay until you get to san jose, 57 degrees. same thing at saratoga. 61 at brentwood, the warm spot. a lot like what we dealt with yesterday morning, same thing with the cloud cover and the reason we're having those delays at sfo. if you're driving, the foggy areas are few and far between, closer to the coast, or if you drive up into them like on 24 as you head towards the caldecott. breezy north of the bay bridge if you're on the ferry today. mass transit, cool this morning, warm stops in stations this afternoon. san francisco, cloudy at 8:00. mostly cloudy at 10:00. we'll start to see sunshine break out around noon. we'll go from the mid 50s to the upper 50s during the afternoon hours. peninsula, how about 58 and cloudy this morning. 63 and mostly cloudy at 10:00. we'll start to break out in sunshine by noon, 67. hang out in the 70s in the

afternoon. let's take a look at the south bay where we'll see the sunshine faster, around 10:00. noon full on and 73. upper 70s during the afternoon hours. down to about 66 by 8:00. if i've been listening this morning correctly, and you have a smile on your face, that usually means that the bay bridge toll plaza isn't quite as bad as it was yesterday. >> it definitely is not. yesterday was a tough day. today it really has not been terrible. we did get the metering lights turned on around the typical time. 5:20 this morning. that is looking average. do want to zoom in and take a look at the approaches. yesterday that was really tough. we had some overnight inspections that went until 5:00. that resulted in metering lights on early and a long backup into the maze. today we're seeing a little delay on that approach from emeryville. that's about it. a quick check at drive times, westbound 580 richmond san rafael, eight minutes.

in san francisco if you think street construction on van ness avenue is bad now. the city's top transit official says expect more street space taken up by construction. this is, of course, all part of the van ness improvement project. according to "the examiner," the $316 million project will enter its second sub phase next month. crews will be conducting underground utility work and it will include replaces 22,000 feet of old water mains, installing new street lights and more. expect a rocky road ahead for van ness. fortunately i don't have to drive on van ness that often. whenever i do, this lane is closed. wait, that lane is closed. >> like an obstacle course. >> i'm on that every day. that's how i get to work every morning. >> how do you feel, reggie? >> i don't feel great about it because it keeps getting delayed. they tell me it's going to be great when it's done. >> it will be wonderful when it's done. >> can't wait for that, alexis.

just a couple days away from pride weekend in san francisco. a lot of sunshine, pleasant conditions for this weekend. for the parade at 9:00, 64, 68 at noon. mild afternoon, 74 at 3:00 and the breezes drop us down to 67 by 6:00. 112 in palm springs, 100 in fresno. that's the breeze coming our way. 88 in sacramento, 94 in chico. temperatures above average in tahoe and your surrounding neighborhoods today all the way through tuesday with low to mid 80s. >> mike, thank you. california's fire season is officially in full swing.

just yesterday two grass fires broke out, but in both cases fire officials say the fires could have been much worse n. san ramon, a small fire swept through the gail ranch neighborhood. this is the same fire in the same open space during the same time of year in a decade. having defensible space, plenty of personnel on hand and the weather conditions did help. >> it was coming so fast. i went to the neighbors and told hem to get in the car and get out. >> usually about the middle of june we add additional fire engines because of the increased fire activity. >> as of monday, cal fire increased firefighting forces to maximum levels statewide. in the east bay, concord police investigating a fatal crash that also hurt three children all under the age of 10. this happened around 6:30 last night on concord boulevard and park side drive. officials say it appears a gray suv t-boned the white car. the three passengers were taken

to children's hospital to get treated. the victim suffered fatal injuries. the search is on for a man who pushed a woman to the ground only to sexually assault her. santa rosa police released these surveillance images. investigators say the attack happened sunday night in the parking lot of an apartment complex on jennings avenue. the victim says the man put his hand up her dress after he pushed her down. when she screamed, that's when the man ran off. a $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. glide memorial methodist church in san francisco stripped of its pastors. the question now why. >> glide foundation trustees received notice from the bishop who oversees churches in california and nevada that the clergy will be reassigned and not replaced. the church hierarchy declined to comment on why it's being done. glide's president believes the rift is caused by a difference in philosophy and the new bishop trying to exert control.
