>> truly soft power. that's interesting. now the plot centers on the chinese film producer meeting hillary clinton on the eve of the presidential election. walk us through that interesting encounter >> the first part -- like 20 minutes is a comedy taking place in california in 2016. and then the show jumps 100 years into the future. and that meeting has since become mythologyized and become the basis of east west musical in china. from a chinese poif they fet the facts wrong but make a beautiful romantic comedy that celebrates how china stepped in to lead the world when america collapsed after the 2016 election. >> interesting. how did you get the idea for this? >> you know, a lot of chinese producers have been coming up to me over the past ten, 15 years . china wants to create an international movie hit or a show that ends up on our broadway. and so i became very aware of this desire and yet because

china controls content, because they have censership, i think it's -- 80s hard thing for them to do. so the show kind of tries to go, what if china did have soft power what kind of musical would they make. >> the entertainment culture in china is exploding. and the audience is huge and has a huge appetite for everything film and art related. how do you use or do you use the play to examine u.s./chinese releases? i know it's a comedy but there is a serious message. >> it's through comedy we try to look at, well, what about dpkz. china is not a dpkz. people don't vote. and china has always taken the position that democracy is unstablizing causing chaos. well since 2016 this country has been pretty chaotic you could argue. in some sense the musical focuses on this. and causes us to ask, well what is the nature of dpkz.

>> you have been writing plays for what pb, 30, 40 years. >> 40 years i had my first play done at stanford at the dorm in 79. >> a year in the arts particularly one that is so successful as yours has been is a joy i would imagine. >> i would feel lucky -- i guess you know i wanted to do this this is my dream and i've gotten to do it many decades now. >> and what were the challenges if any bringing this -- this play soft power has been in l.a. for a few weeks you told me. bringing it up here any particular challenges? >> well this was a show commissioned by a theater in l.a., century theater group and carol hays knew of the early stages and decided to partner with us and get behind it. and mostly it's about -- kind of a crazy idea. can we make it work? and we are -- the response in l.a. was really wonderful. that was a great relief and we're happy to share it with the bay area. >> we know it's a hit here. a soft power at the kern theater runs through july 8th. congratulations on this.

order says will end family separations at the u.s./mexico border. >> according to the the president, family as caught crossing into country illegally will be housed together in detention centers. >> so we are keeping families together and this will solve that problem. at the same time we are keeping a very powerful border. and it continues to be a zero tolerance. >> now, for days the president insisted that only dwres could end the separations. >> yeah, the president's action is likely to face legal challenge since current rules priblt the federal government from detaining immigrant children even if they're with parents for more than 20 days. >> and one official tells "the new york times" that 2,300 children are already separated if parents will not be immediately reunited with them. >> the adults will stay in federal custody during the immigration proceedings from now on. this issue is still generating a lot of reaction as you can imagine here at home. >>
