four engine companies and two battalions fought the flames. if you're just waking up, let's get the update on wegder and traffic. we start with meteorologist mike nicco. >> let's take a look at what's going on. there's the exploratorium camera at 4:15. check tout cloud deck. there's definitely some holes. that will allow for the sunshine to begin the warming trend. temperatures just a little cooler this morning because of the lack of clouds. temperatures in the low to upper 50s. as we get towards noon, 50s at the coast, low to mid 70s around the rest of the neighborhood. a comfortable evening, upper 60s to mid 70s. here is sue again. >> we want to take you to the bay bridge toll plaza. what i want you to focus on, not so much the traffic here because it's pretty light. take a look at the breezes that are out there. those flags blowing and we do have a high wind advisory for the bay bridge. grab on a little extra tighter this morning if you're headed

out there. we have road work. typical slowing coming out of the central valley. we had road work there that's been picked up. now still out there northbound 880, the washington off-ramp remains closed as do several lanes of traffic. >> now to the crisis at the border. president trump is doubling down on his hard line rhetoric. >> this morning the question remains what has happened to the children already taken from their parents. abc's stephanie ramos joins us with more details. >> after weeks of debate, the president signed that executive order he says will keep immigrant families together. he en sifts he will still be, quote, tough on immigration. with a quick signature, president trump did what he said he could not do.

>> we're signing an executive order, keeping families together. >> reporter: this comes 75 days after more than 2,000 children have been separated from their parents. overnight trump defending his dix to suspend the policy during a campaign rally in minnesota, but also said when it comes to undocumented immigrants. >> we're sending them the hell back. >> some trump supporters agree with the president's separation policy. >> did those images of children bother you? >> no. we're paying $700 per day per child. if a person goes to prison or jail, they're separated from their children. >> reporter: for immigrant families going forward, zero tolerance remains in place.

now kids will likely go to dod or i.c.e. facilities with their parents. the order does not over vied the federal court settlement known as the plor ris agreement that says migrant children cannot be jailed for more than 20 days. the president is expected to instruct the department to not follow the law while the white house challenges it in court in order to keep families together while the parent is in custody. health and human services say they are, quote, awaiting further guidance on how to implement the executive order. the families that had been separated, the 2,300 kids will not be immediately reunited. live from washington, stephanie ramos, abc 7 news. the facebook campaign to help reunite undocumented immigrant parents separated from their children has now raised almost $16 million. three of facebook's earlier employees started that company on sunday.

for information about the immigration debate, you can go to our website, abc7news.com. a non-partisan survey concludes that voter influence in the midterm election is at an all-time high because it's viewed as a referendum on president trump. the survey shows 60% now view their midterm vote as a referendum on the president. of that amount, 34% are against the president. 26% support him. the findings make mr. trump a bigger factor in the midterm than any president since ronald reagan's first term. new details this morning in the transition of power that will take place at san francisco's city hall. the chronicle reports that london breed will step down as president of the board of supervisors next week and begin her move to the mayor's office. her inauguration is july 11th. the board will select a new president. the arrest of joseph deangelo in the golden state

killer case is reviving the attempt to find a suspect nicknamed the doodle renchts. cnn evident mates it may have killed as many as 14 men from 1974 to 1975. police officer planned to release a sketch of what he might look like now. if he's still alive, the suspect would be in his early 60s. sky 7 flew over the refinery at point richmond. chevonne says there was a, quote, upset at a processing unit. that resulted in flaring that lasted for about two hours. no shelter in place was issued. but a level one alert was issued which chevron says is standard. a 6-week-old puppy stolen out of a san jose warehouse is back with its owner this

kind of an up anddown forecast for pride this weekend, from 70 tomorrow to 80 saturday. the key for 80, it could be in the low 80s on the bay side. on the coast side, it could be in the mid 60s. there's going to be quite a spread across the city. sunday, 68 degrees. in fact, let's take a look at the pride parade where i think at times it will get out to about 70 from noon to 3:00 before the breezes drop us into the mid 60s by 3:00. 110 in palm springs. still in the 70s around san diego and l.a. today. for my tahoe forecast, low to

mid 80s with total sunshine just about every day. brand new this morning, the white house set to pro potion the merging of the education and labor departments into one federal agency. why would they propose this? it's to cut down on bureaucracy. the trump administration says this will allow them to merge overlapping offices and programs within those two departments. in this plan they are planning to make changes to the office that's responsible for employee background checks, retirement claims, benefits and workforce policy, but this is not necessarily a new concept. republicans have long expressed an interest in eliminating the education department. this morning the president of the oakland a's says the team will match donations of up to $5,000 to replace baseball equipment that was stolen from lick i can henderson field. on monday morning thieves stole

terminal. cannabis is coming to the course list at city college san francisco. it will offer workshops that will teach students about the history of the plant. it will cover the health care, screens and politics of cannabis. the first workshop next month, the second next august. people can register for the cannabis course online. it took three years, million but a new exhibit at the oakland zoo will be open in a few weeks. >> abc's aaron thomas got a preview. >> reporter: some of the animals are still en route to the oakland zoo like the bald eagles. others are making their presence felt. >> that's what a grizzly bear sounds like. >> reporter: and this is what they look like. the exhibit has four 1-year-old grizzlies. teenagers, big teenagers. >> these grizzly bears are 280 pounds. as males they'll get to be 1,000

pounds. >> reporter: down the way, a small group of black bears. their fur may be brown, but they are black bears. staying with four-legged animals, a couple that are have shy. >> we have two north american gray wolf. >> reporter: the zoo hopes the wolves will breed next spring. they're slowly coming back. >> the prey is still here, they're following the deer, rabbits, other species coming in. >> reporter: every animal on the california was either chased out by development or faced extinction. these huge california condors are an example. >> they're so big, they're like a mammal. they are a bird but they share a lot with apex mammals, mountain lions, wolves, bears. it's pretty cool. >> this group of mountain lions were found young and sickly.

the zoo says many of these animals are orphans and would have to be put down. they'll be used to show how diverse california's ecosystem used to be and may bp again. at the oakland soar, aaron thomas, abc 7 news. >> i've been excited to see that because they have that gondola system up there which is supposed to be really cool. >> several fund-raisers that are fun. you go up there and get to eat from oakland restaurants or east bay restaurants. it's a neat place. i hope more people go out and see it. >> what are the animals going to do to stye cool? you and i can find shelter, go to the movies, go shopping in the air conditioning. from our roof cam this morning, you can see the ferry building, the flags not quite as unfurled as they have been the last couple days. faster sunshine and the warming trend begins today. nothing obnoxious yet.

that's tomorrow and saturday. in between we'll see more stars at night and they'll still be comfortable in the 50s and 60s. here is the breakdown for san francisco, 50s and 60s over the next 12 hours starting at 7:00. 60 in the sunset to 69 in bayshore to about 67 in san francisco. our highs today for the east bay, 50s, 60s and 70s. warmer temperatures here with low to mid 70s in most neighborhoods. orinda, as you head into the east bay hills, 77, a little warmer than everybody else. for the peninsula we'll see faster sunshine that will push us to 80 in redwood city, low to mid 60s daly city all the way down to half moon bay. go to the south bay today and we'll crack 80 around san jose. comfortable upper 70s for the north bay, especially places like novato and petaluma in the upper 60s. 78 in sonoma.

smoking tobacco hit an all-time low. the centers for disease control says 14% of people surveyed said they were smokers last year. that translates to about 30 million people in the u.s. men are more likely to light up than women. latinos are the least likely to be smokers. there's one important note, though, the cdc's numbers do not include people who use e-cigarettes. gatorade is going sugarless. gatorade zero hits storrs this week. it contains no sugar, no carbs. they're the leader in the $8 billion sports drink industry, cornering about 75% of the market. here is a way to keep kids busy and teach them about philanthropy. >> the san francisco marin food bank is urging kids to set up lemonade stands and donating proceeds to the food bank. you can go to the
