minutes. breaking news from our live desk, cocoa the gorilla has died. we've just learned that she passed away tuesday morning in her sleep at the age of 46. coco was known for her extraordinary mastery of sign langua language. what you probably didn't know is coco was born at the san francisco zoo, moved to the santa cruz mountains eight years later along with the foundation. she touched the lives of millions as an ambassador for all gorillas, an icon for empathy. sad news this morning. >> it is. i remember coco as a kid, watching a video of her and being so amazed. >> her signing, her relationship with her pets and thinking of her handler this morning. must be so hard for her. >> i can only imagine. they have been together for decades now. the house is going to vote

on two separate bills today. both would prevent the separation of young children from parents. one crafted by house speaker paul ryan and moderates. the other put together by hard right republicans. >> neither secured the 218 votes they need to pass. this comes after president trump's executive order yesterday putting a stop to the separation of families who crossed into the u.s. el lily. altogether, 2,700 families were separated. overnight the health and human services department says it's still seeking guidance on reuniting children with their parents. demonstrations still happening over the trump administration's i'm great lakes policies including this one, where hundreds of people showed up to san rafael. abc's lilian kim has that. >> reporter: the message is simple, families belong together. the fact that the fire department had been separating immigrant families is a concept small children seem to understand. >> we told him in a minimum

sense. and my 4-year-old daughter replied, that is just mean. >> reporter: hundreds gathered to impose the zero-tolerance policy. it's a policy that has brought many to tears. >> if i had to escape violence and terror and come here, i'd hope someone would welcome me with open arms and not rip my children out of my arms. >> reporter: as for the president's executive order to put a hold on separating families, that did little to ease their concerns. >> it does nothing for 2300 kids, it doesn't e diet the process. >> reporter: barbara lee will be heading to the bore dore investigate. she says the executive order accomplishes little. >> he should end the criminal prosecution of asylum seekers. >> reporter: which is why many say it's more important than ever to keep up the pressure. >> do not walk away and think you are great because you came here for an hour. work every day. >> reporter: the marin county board of supervisors is also weighing in. they fired off a letter to the director of homeland security. in san rafael, lilian kim, abc 7 news. who knew this one cell phone video would create so much change. dozens of people shooting up in a hallway at b.a.r.t.'s civic center station. it made national headlines. now you'll see a lot more of this. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live with more on b.a.r.t.'s aggressive plan to stop drug use on its property. >> reporter: hi, reggie. we're in concord talking to commuters as they head into san francisco. they tell us the civic center station does need a lot of attention. they do like this new idea. take a look at this video that started it all. this was captured at the civic center station and captured the attention of city leaders. a b.a.r.t. rider took cell phone video of people doing drugs in the station. the mayor says ever since the video came out, he's had three

meeting with b.a.r.t. officials and san francisco police about how to clean up the station. they have announced a collaboration. they will add 300 hours a week of police patrols to that station, both b.a.r.t. police and san francisco police officers. >> it shouldn't matter to people that use b.a.r.t. which police department is covering this area, which police department has jurisdiction. they just want to feel safe. >> i think it's good. it will put pass jeengers >> reporter: police will first try and refer the drug users to outreach teams who will offer them help. if they refuse, the police chief says they can then consider arresting them. this will all start next month. live in concord, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. happening tonight in contra costa county. state health and navy experts will be on hand to answer questions and give an update on the situation. it centers around the allegation

that potentially radioactive soil from hunter's point shipyard was dumped in pittsburg. the community forum is tonight at 6:30 at the ambrose community center on willow pass road in bay point. this man arrested by the secret service after jumping a security barrier at the white house has been identified as a walnut creek cream resident. 29-year-old alexander miner was reported missing. according to a tourist who witnessed this incident monday. miner turned to him before the incident and asked, what to see if god is real? a public safety meeting after someone attacked a mother holder her baby. surveillance video shows the victim crossing the street on june 3rd. moments later she got hit in the head with a blunt object. she's now recovering from life-threatening brain injuries. her baby was not hurt.

accuweather seven-day forecast. here is reggie and natasha. >> are those fish okay? we're not okay. a new study concluding the world is in serious trouble when it comes to plastic trash. >> the university of georgia study estimates 111 million metric tons of plastic waste will pile up by 2030. that incredible amount is partly due to china's decision to stop importing nearly half of the world's scrap starting next january. china once imported 72% of the scrap. the survey says the u.s. will have to contend with 37 million tons of metric waste, an amount we're not prepared to handle. kate spade's funeral is today. her brand is donating more than $1 million to suicide prevention in honor of the designer. the company will also match donations to the crisis text line made until june 29th. spade founded the company in '93 and helped spark the designer handbag craze. she died by suicide earlier this

highway 4 looking good and your drive into san francisco from marin, less than 20 minutes. there was an amazing rescue overnight in the santa cruz mountains. a driver careened off a cliff, then got caught in a tree. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is off highway 17 with details on that rescue. matt? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. firefighters and chp officers agree, a tree saved this driver's life. check out the video and see for yourself. all of this happened in the santa cruz mountains. chp responded to the call on locust drive and alder croft road. fights say this was a very technical rescue. they had to strap the car to the tree before they were able to get the driver out. >> it was almost a high-angle rescue. it was very, very steep. we had to use tools, the jaws of

life, to cut him out. his feed were wedged under the dash and the pedals. >> reporter: firefighters used ropes to pull him up about 30 dpeet up t feet up the cliff in a basket, taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. chp does believe alcohol was a factor in this crash. live in the santa cruz mountains, matt keller, abc 7 news. vieters trying to determine the cause of a fire that broke out at an auto repair shop in oakland. it took 15 minutes to get it under control. oakland fire live posted this video to its twitter feed. four engine companies and two battalions fought the flames. no injuries were reported. now to the crisis at the border. president trump doubling down on his hard line immigration rhetoric one day after signing that executive order to end the separation of families at the u.s.-mexico border. what will happen to the children already taken away from their parents. abc's stephanie ramos joins us

live from washington with the latest details. good morning, stephanie. >> natasha and reggie, after president trump signed that executive order saying it will keep immigrant families together, he insisted he will still be, quote, tough on immigration. >> with a quick signature, president trump did what he said he could not do. >> we're signing an executive order. we or going to keep the families together. >> putting a stop to the separation of families crossing into the u.s. illegally. this comes 75 days after more than 2,000 children have been separated from their parents. >> i didn't like the sight or the feeling of families being separated. >> reporter: overnight trump defended his decision to suspend the program during a campaign rally in minnesota. but also said when it comes to undocumented immigrants. >> we're sending them the hell back. >> reporter: -- some supporters agreed with the separation

policy. >> did those images of children bother you? >> no. because they're well cared for. paying $700 per day per child. if a person goes to prison or skbral, they're separated from their children. >> reporter: for immigrant families going tolerance remains in place. but kids will go with their parents for immigration proceed deposition. the order does not override the federal court settlement known as the floor ris agreement that says the children cannot be jailed mormon than 20 days. the president is expected to instruct the department of justice not to follow that law. health and human services say that are, quote, awaiting further guidance on how to implement this executive order. the families that have been separated those 2,300 kids will

would be in his early 60s. a 6-week-old puppy stolen out of a san jose warehouse is back with its owner. police received a tip that led them to nyla and the accused dog napper yesterday. authorities found nyla in the central valley town of series. the suspect reportedly told police he had given the stolen puppy to his girlfriend as a gift. flaring at chevron's richmond refinery is under investigation. sky 7 flew over yesterday afternoon. chevron says there was an upset in a processing unit that resulted in flaring for about two hours. no shelter in place orrer the us with issued. a level one alert was issued for the community which chevron says is standard for flaring events like this one. you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. look at that. temperature in daly city 49, pacifica and half moon bay 51
