>> reporter: blocking traffic and still demonstrating more than 24 hours after a police officer shot and killed 17 year old antoine rose. the incident caught on cellphone video. >> boom, boom, boom, i said oh, my god. he shot them boys just for runnin'. >> reporter: police stopped this vehicle, a suspected getaway car involved in a shooting that happened moments before. >> the suspect was directed to the ground. two others bolted from the vehicle on foot. >> reporter: the officer fired on the two who fled, hitting the unarmed teen three times as he ran away. his family is still in shock. >> they killed a good kid. he was a good kid. he did not deserve that. >> reporter: inside the car, police say they found two guns. the driver of the car was interviewed and later released. our abc affiliate in pittsburgh spoke with the officer involved face-to-face. he said it's been a difficult time for him, but he has the support of his family and law

enforcement. now, while he had worked in other areas before, the officer involved in the incident had only been sworn into this department three hours before the deadly shooting. he's now on paid leave while officials investigate. >> maggie, thank you. turning to the weather now, severe storms are plaguing half the country. heavy rain and flooding are likely from the southern great lakes to the texas gulf coast, and almost everywhere east of that line. hundreds of people had to be rescued in south texas from homes, cars and adult day care center and motels. more than a dozen people were rescued in just one neighborhood in the town of mercedes. there's an excessive heat warning, triple digits are expected in california, nevada and arizona. the supreme court has handed main street a victory. states and local governments may collect sales tax on internet sales. it ends the tax-free advantage

nevada highway troopers made an incredible rescue.

game of soccer, and for the first time, we see a baby being rocked by a caretaker at a so-called tender-age shelter. those images released after a report said babies and toddlers in those shelters were crying and in crisis. but still no answers for others like this woman detained in seattle. her 5-year-old son in a san antonio shelter. [ speaking in foreign language ] telling us from jail, she imagines how desperate her son is all alone, and she is fighting to reunite with him. protests from pennsylvania, to the capital, to the tent city in texas where mayors demanded families be reunited immediately. ruben garcia helps families on the border and says there's no one agency that keeps track of separated families. >> in a normal situation, that gets very messy. and now we're talking about more than 2300 kids. >> correct, correct.

and the parents of 2300 kids locked up in different places. >> reporter: but for others like escobar, he didn't want the kids separated, but he supports president trump. >> we foot the bill for everything from food, clothing, housing, you name it. health care. who's going to pay for all of that? we are! and i don't think that's right. >> reporter: at that minnesota rally, while many said those images were sad, they still stand by the president. >> i think that we have a lot of issues at home that we need to take care of before we start taking care of other people too. >> the president's trying to make it right, i think. doing his best. it's a big world. >> reporter: and now we've learned that officials have toured four military bases in

case they need them, to house up to 20,000 more unaccompanied migrant children. the obama administration did something very similar in 2014 to house 7,000 unaccompanied children. gio benitez, abc news, el paso, texas. >> and first lady melania trump got a first-hand look in texas. she questioned staff about how kids were coping and how often they spoke with their parents. she was told she speak twice a week for ten minutes. she also offered to lend her support. >> and i also like to ask you how i can help to these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible. >> and another thing getting a lot of attention as part of the visit. the first lady was wearing a military-style jacket. on the back, though, were the words "i really don't care, do you." her spokeswoman said it was just a jacket, no hidden message.

president trump later tweeted the words were aimed at the media. >> there's no hidden message. whatever it is, it's right there. >> i think they argued she put the jacket on and wasn't intending to make a statement with the words on the back. >> it's a nice jacket at the end of the day. the new york daily news calling it full muddle jacket. and a new comment by the president's former campaign chairman. he was discussing the separation policy. they talked about a down syndrome child. lewandowski reacted by saying "wah-wah." now he's been dropped by the speakers group. and a judge has ruled that the california parents accused of severely abusing their children will stand trial. kayna whitworth reports.
