we're with these different families who've crossed over and unaccompanied minors. we were concerned about the heat because the little baby's only 1 years old. we able to give him a bottle of water. agent rodriguez says as soon as they get to the processing facility they'll make sure the baby's okay. i ask agent rodriguez, what will happen to these families. are they going to stay together? >> right now they stay together. >> reporter: what's it been like for your agents? one moment they're ordered to separate families, the next to keep them together. what's that like? >> it's a huge challenge for our agents. they're here to do a job, to protect the border, enforce the law. >> reporter: we asked about separating the children. what were your agents telling you about separating the children. they're crying in front of you. in some cases babies. what did they tell you? >> that's a challenge in law enforcement. you're always going to be taking actions that have an effect on people.

they're mission-focussed but doing it with heart. >> reporter: why do we have to put children in cages. >> it's a very temporary situation, a matter of hours. while we work to transfer families or kids to hhs or i.c.e. together. and what we have to do is protect them. >> reporter: can't you separate them without putting them in cages? these are little kids. >> this is the funding we have for our facility. it's a safe facility. you can see what's happening through the open, transparent fencing. >> reporter: he's confident they can be reunited. >> it's important at the outset that we process them carefully, everybody they cross with so if they have a parent even if it's a short period of time during a stay in our facility they can be connected and reunited with the parents. >> reporter: and the commissioner tells me it's one of the most important steps that happens to reunite these families. when they first came here and

were separated, there was data collected and customs and border protection shares that information with i.c.e. and health and human services in hopes of reunifying those families. >> meanwhile, president trump traveled to south carolina ahead of today's republican primary runoff to drum up support of henry mcmaster. but he also took the opportunity to make it clear that he wants migrants who cross the border illegally to be immediately sent back to where they came from. he told the crowd, quote, i don't want judges, i want i.c.e. and border patrol agents. civility is taking a bit of a hit as politicians battle it out over immigration and other controversial policies. president trump slammed the virginia restaurant that asked his press secretary to leave because she worked for him, calling that facility filthy. the secretary addressed the climate. >> some have pushed for

vandalism for the restaurant. a hollywood actor publicly encouraged people to kidnap my children. and this weekend, a member of congress called for people to push back and make clear to those serving our president and this country that they are not welcome anytime, for anything. >> and maxine waters called for trump aides to be harassed in public over separation of migrant children. top democrats have denounced waters' remarks. many states are holding primaries, including colorado, maryland, utah, mississippi. so far, democrats are turning out to vote in this year's primaries. more so than four years ago. but one of today's more interesting races is between republicans on staten island in new york city. dan donovan is running against michael grimm who went to prison for tax evasion.

authorities in long beach, california are trying to determine a motive for a shooting incident that killed a fire captain. they say a 77-year-old retirement home resident purposely started a fire in his apartment. that man is also accused of opening fire on first responders when they arrived. now captain dave rosa, a 17 year veteran of the department was shot and did not survive. >> we just have to do our job and firefighters do a tremendous job and they deal with fire. they don't deal with bullets. >> this is a tough day. it's a tough day. >> emotions running high, and understandably. he leaves behind a wife and two children. another firefighter and resident were also wounded. the suspected gunman is now in custody, facing several serious charges. and a state campground near los angeles where a father was fatally shot has been shut down amid concerns about safety. he was shot down inside a tent

with his two daughters. the kids were not hurt. abc's clayton sandell has the latest. >> reporter: the case of the malibu campground killer appears to be a tragic and total mystery. just before 5:00 a.m. friday deputies were called to this popular malibu state park. >> they responded to that call at the location, they found a male victim who had been shot at least once to the upper torso. >> reporter: 35-year-old tristan bodette was shot. in the tent he was sharing with his two young daughters, ages 2 and 4 on a camping trip so his wife could study for a big test. >> we don't have any current suspect information or a motive at this time. >> reporter: in a statement, his family says he was universally admired. a scientist who loved cooking and micro brews. he was happiest out in nature, including camping with his family. as word of the murder has spread, people say they have been shot at here too.

>> at first i thought somebody put a sticker on my car. and my boyfriend walked around and said that's a bullet hole. >> reporter: detectives are aware of shootings in this area, but right now there is no evidence they are connected. clayton sandell, calabasas. a new study finds flight attendants have a higher risk of getting cancer compared to the rest of us. researchers say the job itself is the problem. flight attendants are exposed to more cancer-causing agents than the rest of the population, including poor air quality. irregular sleep schedules and frequent time zone changes are contributing factors to all of this. and there's also a different study that finds that may make you think about getting a new bike helmet. researchers at virginia tech university have found many helmets don't have new concussion technology. they may not actually provide enough protection in real world crashes.

go to sleep. but i attempting to make it to 9:00 a.m. me and frank. when i finally get into bed, my mind is racing and i can't calm down. the best solution for me was constructive worry. a couple hours before bedtime, quickly jot down everything on your mind. it teaches your brain there's a time and place for worrying and it's not bed. within three weeks? >> you're sleeping a reasonable amount of time. and the proportion of deep sleep almost normal. if i had to say one thing, it would be that if you gave yourself an extra one hour in bed, you might be better. >> with a few more adjustments, i'm able to sleep eight hours a day for the first time in my life. >> show off. >> but i didn't just get help from a specialist. i got help with some products. so tomorrow we'll have part two of the series, sleep gadgets.
