the pumps. now the repeal, i should say, is officially heading to the ballot box in november. drivers are optimistic they could save money. with the legislation approved more than a year ago taxes on gasoline rose $0.12 per gallon, vehicle registration rose $25. the new effort would repeal tax hikes and require voter approval for increases in the future. the plan to roll back the tax and fees is a key component in the state republican party strategy to win legislative seats in the midterm election. >> why not? we don't want to pay anymore >> a lot of people say it's necessary to keep our roads and bridges intact. what do you think about that? >> i think we need to pay some taxes somehow. >> that man went on to say he's not sure the money is helping improve roads. governor jerry brown and supporters of the tax say $5 billion raised annually is

needed to maintain state's bridges and roads. they also say tax money to improve existing roads and, thus, improve congestion. reporting live, i'm jessica castro, abc 7 news. a lot of people have strong feelings. thank you, jessica. new developments following water rescue at the berkeley marina. suspected driver under arrest for attempted murder. officers were called to this area by his lordship restaurant around 7:00 on sunday night. that's where witnesses saw a car drive right into the water. strangers rushed to help rescue the driver inside. they say he purposefully drove into the water following a fight with his girlfriend. he's due in court tomorrow. >> repairs at splash park under way. blue goose park in brentwood closed last week after four kids got sick. contra costa county health services found a broken uv light. said chlorine levels up to code. the city's "parks and rec"

department has not confirmed if illnesses are related. splash pad will reopen after repairs are done and it passes inspection. investigators searching for a shooter who killed a father while he was camping in a tent with his young daughters inside. now we're learning this not the first shooting at the campground. 35-year-old tristan beaudette was shot and killed while his two daughters were inside with him. this happened at the state park in calabasas. the family was set to move next month. several shootings surfaced including one in january. a woman woke up to a gunshot and found a bull hole in her car. they say there's no evidence to connect shootings. a gofundme to support wife and daughters has reached nearly $110,000 or more than that at this point. we have more details and a link to this do fund me page on abc7news.com. >> new at 6:00, expect apple ceo tim cook to continue to protest different social issues. at a "fortune" magazine last

crossing development. it lit up the sky for sure. contra costa officials say it broke out in an open space near fallbrook and treat boulevard. luckily firefighters jumped on this one, knocked it down containing it to a little more than one acre. certainly does not help this area is full of tinder, dry brush and weeds. the cause of the fire is unknown. arson investigators we're told will be looking into this. live in concord, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. an abc 7 news update. >> more resources soon coming in the fight against the pawnee fire. it has already burned more than 10,000 acres in lake county. today the lake county board of supervisors will vote on an emergency declaration. mandatory evacuations for the entire community. so far the fire has destroyed 22 homes and buildings. for many of the evacuees, though, staying at the red cross shelter, the sheriff delivered some good news.
