>> and mental illness, mental health one of the factors. >> any kind of medical or mental health issue. >> we have seen in the last two years, the factors have squeezed people more or less. >> i think what we see is that people are being squeezed more into the central part of the city as there is more and more development, especially on the eastern water front. we see places where homeless people used to sleep becoming offices and housing. and people are being -- the problem has gotten more visible. it's not gotten significantly worse. actually in the past two years it's gotten slightly better. >> let's talk about why. what is are some of the innovative ways you came up with issues.yo aress t focusing using data and being a lot more organized around how we manage our services. we have world class non-profit organizations providing great services. but the city often didn't do the best job that we could coordinating all of those efforts. so that kind of coordination we see now both with the non-profit

partners but also with other city agencies is one of the reasons why we are making a difference. >> i know your strategy is always evolving. but recently the city cracked down on tent encamp mts. what kind of alternatives are you offering people. >> yeah, i don't think that crackdown is the right word. we've been working to resolve the tent encamp mts two years now. we've resolved 32 encamp presidents. in those there were approximately 1,300 people. 800 of them accepted offers of shelter and many moved to housing. what we do is we go out, find out what people's needs are. we ask them how we can be of assistance. what type of service that they need and then tri to match them up to the right place. it takes time. we have to build trust with people, having to get to know enemy and under their situation. you know, just coming in and cracking down or sweeping people is not effective. we have to remember there is people living inside the tents. and for us to address the tent problem we really need to address the problems of the individuals who are inside the

tents. >> if somebody asked you what is the one thing i could do as a san franciscoant resident to try to help in terms of the homeless issue what would you tell them. >> the one thing everybody can do is when you see somebody on streets homeless is say hello, look at them, smile, acknowledge that they're there. so many people tell me that they sit down and they see hundreds of people walking by them and just looking through them and not seeing them as people. and i think it's really important- dsh to remember that people who are homeplace -- they're people. and they crave the same things we all want, social interaction, to feel accepted, part of a community. and when we ignore people that we see on the streets we really you know hurt them and making it hard are for them to feel a part of as opposed to a part from the rest of theci. >> they need to humanized absolutely. >> yes. >> jeff kositsky thank you for coming in. the homeless czar. thank you for sharing insight and giving us clues on the
