and any possible connection he might have to other murders is just beginning. the sheriff's office is expected to release more information on the case later today. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. fire crews have been on the scene of a wind blown brush fire in benicia all night guarding against any flare-ups. high winds pushed the fire to seven acres before flames reached eastbound 780 last night. the wind carried embers across the freeway and burned another acre nearby. authorities shut down 780 as the fire threatened homes. >> the time of year and location i was surprised how aggressively it was burning. for it to jump a multilane freeway that quick and houses and structures threatened. we went to a second and almost immediately to a third alarm at that point based on the threat. >> travis air force base had to bring in water because hydrants were nowhere near the fire. it is not clear what started the flames. it is now 4:30. if you're just waking up to us,

southbound 680 dublin to mission boulevard. 101 to cupertino 16 minutes. developing news this morning, the man accused of a deadly shooting at a maryland newspaper is now charged with five counts of first-degree murder. police are still searching for evidence at the "capital gazette" in analysis. live in annapolis, good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. that building behind me just across the street is the crime scene. we have new details about the alleged gunman. his long-simmering hatred for the newspaper and those previous threats police say led to the shooting rampage. overnight police in maryland searched the home of the suspected gunman in what appears to be the deadliest attack on journalists in the u.s. in years. >> this was a targeted attack on the "capital gazette." >> reporter: shots fired at the annapolis, maryland, newspaper yesterday afternoon. investigators say the suspect, 38-year-old jarrod ramos -- >> the guy was holding what

looked like a big shotgun, pointing the gun deep earp into the office like he was targeting people. >> reporter: inside, five people killed. another two injured. employees scrambled for cover. others hid from the shooter. the paper's crime reporter phil davis tweeting there's nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you're under your desk and then hear the gunman reload. the retired editor of the paper says the suspect had a history of social media threats against him and the paper for reporting on this guilty plea to stalking his ex-girlfriend in 2011. >> he kept track of both the reporter and i. he knew we had left. i doubt that he was looking for me when i came in the door, but he was certainly looking to retaliate. >> reporter: the sister paper, the baltimore sun, wrote tributes to the victims. this morning their newspaper's front cover, the "capital gazette" refusing to let the

tragedy stop it from covering the story. the suspect hasn't been cooperating and had to be id'd using facial recognition. we know the "capital gazette" reported his alleged threats years ago. he filed a defamation lawsuit against the paper and lost. the whole thing is just heartbreaking. a go fund me site is helping raise money for medical expenses. the staff will be consulted before any money is spent. we do have a link on our website, abc7news.com. abc 7 news received surveillance video showing the car san francisco police say is responsible for a hit-and-run that left a pedicab driver in critical condition. the gold four door was swerving through traffic on the embarcadero before slamming into the pedicab. it happened on sansome street.

it caused the pedicab to collide with a second one. a family of four were injured. police say anyone who saw the accident needs to contact them. san francisco's minimum wage is going up to $15 an hour on sunday. it's the final tier of the cost of living increase for proposition j passed by voters in november of 2014. four years ago san francisco's minimum wage was $10.74. people will have more power over the information companies collect on them this is part of a privacy bill governor brown has signed into law that will require companies to tell you what personal data they've collected, why, and which third parties have it. you can ask to have that information deleted. you'll be able to sue for any breach of unencrypted personal data. kids under 16 will have to opt in to have their personal information sold. this new law takes effect in 2020. a data breach may have exposed information on nearly 340 million individuals and

businesses. the comparecords include phone numbers, home addresses and e-mail addresses but not social security numbers or financial details. they have not yet commented on the leak. the pawnee fire that's burned more than 17,800 acres is now 50% contained. cal fire lifted more evacuation orders as the flames move away from populated areas. the fire started on saturday and it's destroyed 22 structures. some of them homes. there's concern about containment lines holding because a red flag warning is being issued starting this morning. and speaking of that, let's see how we're doing. mike nicco? you can see the red, reggie. it depends on which county. 11:00 in the morning for lake and solano counties. for the north bay and mendocino county, and it goes through at least 11:00 saturday evening. even longer for lake and solano

counties, 5:00 sunday morning. the highest fire danger is developing today. the faster winds are developing tonight especially up around the pawnee fire. you can see we're around 10 to 20 most of the afternoon and into the evening hours and then we get up around 20 to 25 during the overnight hours. so i would expect the fire to spread tonight. here's a look at our temperatures back in the east bay. we're in the mid to upper 50s until you get to concord and highway 4. low to mid-50s. your commute planner for today. everything is pretty good other than the glaring sunshine and a little breezy south of the bay bridge again. it's going to be a pretty nice day to get out and about. a look at the south bay. 62 and sunshine this morning. 71 at 10:00. look at these low to upper 80s as we head from noon all the way to 7:00. back down to 76. the peninsula, 60 this morning. 75 by noon. 80s -- low 80s this afternoon from about 1:00 to about 5:00. and then san francisco, 60s.

mid to upper 60s after starting off sunshine and 58 degrees. got our fingers crossed. most of the week has been quiet or at least less than normal traffic and you're thinking today about the same? >> i think we're going to be really light today, hopefully anyway. it's friday. we have the holiday next weekend. i think a lot of folks may be stretching out the holiday, taking a few extra days off. in fact, some good news already for our road work. we just had one slow spot so far this morning that was on northbound 880 between alvarado and state road 92. looks like they have wrapped up that work. we had a solid line of red for about a mile a few minutes ago. i believe we have all lanes back only and are already back in the green that did not take long to thin out. looking at light volumes here, southbound 680 through walnut creek, no delays or brake lights yet. hoping that trend continues for the morning. we'll look at mass transit up next. a political dispute is taking a disturbing twist.

daylight saving time. governor brown has signed a bill putting the proposal on the november ballot. the practice of changing our clocks twice a year is outdated. and studies do show that losing an hour of sleep and the switch of daylight saving increases the chances of heart attack and traffic accidents. if voters approve, the legislature would decide whether to stay in standard or daylight saving time. permanently there are several hurdles that have to be cleared before this would actually happen. congress has to prevent -- the governor has to sign in. this is a story that goes on and on. happening today oakland's oldest mexican restaurant will close its doors after 91 years. >> take a look at this line. the owners say it is time to retire. abc 7 news anchor joined i enjoy one last taste. >> reporter: for young and old everyone standing or sitting in this line outside mexicali rose has a story. >> my father introduced us to

probably one of the business ye spots is the bay bridge toll plaza and a stackup on the right-hand side. it looks like the left-hand side fairly open right now and no metering lights yet. that usually happens around 5:20. maybe a little bit closer to 5:30 this morning with the lighter volumes. a follow-up on a small issue with b.a.r.t. last night. oakland airport connector was out of service for a few minutes due to a mechanical issue during the evening commute yesterday. we did call to confirm. everything is normal this morning. 28 b.a.r.t. trains in service with no delays. thanks, alexis. a rally is scheduled at the alameda county board of supervisors to demand an audit of the sheriff's department. protesters want to know how greg ahern is spending taxpayer dollars. they point out the department's budget continues to increase while the alameda county jail population has decreased by 44% over the past ten years. members of the center for human rights will begin their rally at 10:00 in front of the
