saturday. machine, ready to rock central park. the headline, preparing for the worst. so excited. police had just run an active shooter drill less than a week ago. let's go to abc's chief justice correspondent, pierre thomas, in washington with more on the gunman and how they took him down. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning. police say the suspect was specifically targeting the newspaper and came with a deadly plan. and carried it out in cold blood. in the midst of a mayhem an initial description of the alleged shooter as police race to the scene. >> all units, limit your transmissions. do we have any kind of intel on our shooter? >> white male with a ponytail. >> reporter: witnesses say the suspect, armed with a shotgun, had blasted through a glass door, entering the newsroom of "the capital gazette." two injured. and those five murdered. authorities said he had created a distraction apparently to make it difficult for victims and police, creating more chaos. >> it was actually canisters of smoke grenades that he used inside of the building when he entered. >> reporter: the county's top official said the suspect had put down his weapon and was hiding under a desk when

"capital gazette." >> several shots have been fired. possible shotgun. at least then shots heard. >> reporter: inside the newsroom, reporters and editors fled for cover, recalling the moments of terror. phil davis described it as a war zone. >> just continually shooting people. at one point, i'm pretty sure i heard him reload, where i was under my desk, and he was only a few feet away from me. >> reporter: in the midst of the mayhem an initial description of the alleged shooter, 38-year-old jarrod ramos. >> do we have any kind of intel on our shooter? >> white male with ponytail. >> reporter: sources telling abc news that initially there was difficulty identifying the suspect because he had no i.d. or wallet on him. what can you tell us about the

suspect right now? is he cooperating with authorities? >> we're not getting much cooperation. >> reporter: court records show he filed a lawsuit against the paper after it published an article reporting he had stalked a woman. records show ramos lost his defamation suit and now we know the names of the victims, wendi winters, a special publication editor who described herself as a proud navy mom. editorial page editor gerald fischman as did john mcnamara, and rebecca smith just started at the paper and "capital gazette" editor and columnist robert hiassen. so, again, that headline, the suspected shooter still not cooperating with police so many hours later. he is not telling them anything about why he did this, despite the long legal battle with the paper. so now police have the same question we all do. why? robin. >> it is a question. gio, thank you. now to the millions getting ready to travel for the fourth of july.

the tsa is saying today could be the busiest travel day of the year to fly, even busier than thanksgiving so let's go back to our senior transportation correspondent david kerley there in atlanta. home of the country's busiest airport. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we are in delta's worldwide command center here in atlanta. and the staff here preparing for what could be the busiest day of flying for the year. we usually think about the winter holidays around thanksgiving, but it may actually be this friday around fourth of july. take and look at the numbers. tsa says they will screen potentially 2,700,000 flyers today. that's 100,000 more today than the sunday after last thanksgiving. delta is starting it a little bit behind. we were in their tower yesterday. thunderstorms shutting down their operations. 50 flights diverted. they're catching up this morning. and we're able to see a piece of technology that is getting you to where you want to go quicker. a laser system that helps the pilots park the jet at the gate saving some time. you know, the guy who runs this center, robin, tells us this staff sees this as their super
