people who perished in the fire. new details are coming in on the 1974 cold case that led detectives to a san jose apartment yesterday. their prime suspect, steve crawford, shot and killed himself during that encounter. we are learning that crawford had suicide on his mind for some time, as it turns out. abc 7 news reporter david louie is live at the santa clara county sheriff's department with more on this, david. >> reporter: dan sheriff's detectives hoped to gain insight perhaps incriminaling evidence upon entering the apartment of crawford. instead they found details of his objection with the 1974 murder case and about his own fate. the two most intriguing items detectives recovered from the suspect's studio apartment, the jacket cover of the book, the ultimate evil which detailed the brutal murder of 19-year-old arliss perry and a 2-year-old suicide note believed to have been written after he was

interviewed by a sheriff's office detective. crawford used a large recover to shoot himself in the head as he lay in bed. he stalled detectives at the door trying to serve him a warn by saying he needed to get dressed. the 67-year-old's sister of arliss perry told me by phone this brings closure to her. >> it does for me. high mom i'm not so sure. i mean, she is 88 years old and struggling with the why, i think. and i said, you know, mom, i don't think we're ever going to know the why. >> reporter: even as dna finally provided the breakthrough link to tie crawford to the 44-year-old case. sheriff lawyery smith agrees the motive remains a mystery. >> well never know the reason. i believe a crime of opportunity. >> perry's body was found at the altar at memorial church by crawford a campus security guard. he said he locked up the church that october night in 1974 then discovered the body early the next morning. she had been killed by an ice pick to the head.

firefighters are flown into remote parts of the zone to work on containment lines. the number of structures destroyed stands at 22, including homes. evacuation orders for the double eagle and spring valley neighborhoods lifted yesterday. firefighters will be on high alert this weekend in the bay area. the national weather service put out the tweet. there is a red flag warning again starting tonight for parts of the north bay. it comes with a warning that any fire is capable of spreading rapidly, much like we saw last weekend in lake county. >> when we talk about red flag warnings that usually means two things in terms of the weather. it's going to be hot and windy. >> for a look at what's prompting the warning including the conditions let's check in with spencer christian. you are right about the two conditions that will add to the -- to a windy and hot, dry, hot and windy. a look at the red flag warning up in lake and solano counties, the red flag warning is in effect and will be until 5:00 a.m. sunday. and the remainder of those areas in red, including the north bay

boy is recovering after he was burned by a chemistry experience gone wrong. >> the accident happened at a city run summer camp for kids. today there are a lot of questions about why it happened. >> our reporter coronell bernhard is live in with the story. coronell. >> reporter: that accident happened at a school just across the street. the boy was air lifted to uc davis burn center in sacramento. listed in stable conditions. meantime the chemistry camp is cancelled until investigators figure out what went wrong. >> this is the napa classroom where a week-long chemistry camp for kids ages 8 to 12 was happening. but on thursday a science experiment demonstration went wrong. >> something happened. there was a fire. unfortunately a young man, 9-year-old was burned. >> the 9-year-old boy and eight other kids were watching instructors conduct the sugar snake kbugs experiments like this. it's what happens we baking soda and sugar is lit on fire.

ople havd from their homes which are threatened by a large grass fire, as you can see. it's just on the border of a neighborhood with several dozen s in on the border between walnut creek and concord. as you can see from sky map 7, some of the skreets in the area, montecito drive, near woodlands lime ridge. right now firefighters trying to keep it from the homes, pouring water onto large flames. it's hot and windy. neighbors north of the fire are under heavy smoke. neighborhoods i should say. stay with abc 7 news for updates and download the app. as you can see this fire which looked like it was almost out a few minutes ago flared up again. and more grass is burning in this area near the concord, walnut creek border. we will stay on top of this and bring you updates on the news appear and here.
