thp and there is still conferencing and messaging going on right now in the courtroom as to whether this deal will go forward or not. harris was in the courtroom consulting with his attorneys. it's thought the deal would spare victims and the families an emotionally tough trial. >> they intend to put on pictures of the victims that burn. and everyone will be crying and screaming. and so everyone wanted to eliminate that ordeal. >> there's already been anguish, turmoil. you got to think about it. i mean for years we sat back and mourned our loved ones. >> reporter: so a criminal trial was set to begin july 16th. it may still go forward. it may not. that's what we are waiting to

hear right now. there would likely be 75 or more witnesses called to the stand. the trial could last up to six months. now, i talked to an attorney representing 12 of the ghost ship fire victims. she said they are relieved and happy to hear that there might be a plea deal in the case. so at least the defendant spent some time in jail. as you heard, the other man we spoke to said he was upset at hearing there might be a plea deal. right now, as i speak prosecutors and defense attorneys are negotiating behind this door, just behind me here in the courthouse. and we are expecting to get word soon on whether or not this plea deal is going forward. if both defendants agree to 8 years in prison. reporting live in oakland, leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> leslie, thank you. of course if the plea deal goes through we will cover that on abc7news.com. in fact you will find extensive coverage online there. also video from inside the building and images of the 36

people who perished in the fire. new details are coming in on the 1974 cold case that led detectives to a san jose apartment yesterday. their prime suspect, steve crawford, shot and killed himself during that encounter. we are learning that crawford had suicide on his mind for some time, as it turns out. abc 7 news reporter david louie is live at the santa clara county sheriff's department with more on this, david. >> reporter: dan sheriff's detectives hoped to gain insight perhaps incriminaling evidence upon entering the apartment of crawford. instead they found details of his objection with the 1974 murder case and about his own fate. the two most intriguing items detectives recovered from the suspect's studio apartment, the jacket cover of the book, the ultimate evil which detailed the brutal murder of 19-year-old arliss perry and a 2-year-old suicide note believed to have been written after he was

interviewed by a sheriff's office detective. crawford used a large recover to shoot himself in the head as he lay in bed. he stalled detectives at the door trying to serve him a warn by saying he needed to get dressed. the 67-year-old's sister of arliss perry told me by phone this brings closure to her. >> it does for me. high mom i'm not so sure. i mean, she is 88 years old and struggling with the why, i think. and i said, you know, mom, i don't think we're ever going to know the why. >> reporter: even as dna finally provided the breakthrough link to tie crawford to the 44-year-old case. sheriff lawyery smith agrees the motive remains a mystery. >> well never know the reason. i believe a crime of opportunity. >> perry's body was found at the altar at memorial church by crawford a campus security guard. he said he locked up the church that october night in 1974 then discovered the body early the next morning. she had been killed by an ice pick to the head.

he she had been sexually molested yet it took 44 years until investigators could use dna to pin the crime on crawford. >> i thauls believed it was an insider because it took a while for the insider to lay her out the way she was done. this was somebody who was not going to be interrupted. >> reporter: a sad note about the family of murder victim, arliss perry. her 91-year-old father died three months ago. his dying wish was to find out who had killed his daughter and which. but he never got that wish. we have also learned that arliss's then husband, renowned psychologist dr. bruce perry is relieved by the break in the case. live in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. >> thank you. the pawnee fire burning in lake county is now 5 a% contained. that's according to calfire. the blaze has been burning since saturday. it's burned nearly 14,000 acres.

boy is recovering after he was burned by a chemistry experience gone wrong. >> the accident happened at a city run summer camp for kids. today there are a lot of questions about why it happened. >> our reporter coronell bernhard is live in with the story. coronell. >> reporter: that accident happened at a school just across the street. the boy was air lifted to uc davis burn center in sacramento. listed in stable conditions. meantime the chemistry camp is cancelled until investigators figure out what went wrong. >> this is the napa classroom where a week-long chemistry camp for kids ages 8 to 12 was happening. but on thursday a science experiment demonstration went wrong. >> something happened. there was a fire. unfortunately a young man, 9-year-old was burned. >> the 9-year-old boy and eight other kids were watching instructors conduct the sugar snake kbugs experiments like this. it's what happens we baking soda and sugar is lit on fire.
