wildfires decimated communities in sonoma and napa counties, residents are hesitant. abc 7 news was in santa rosa yesterday. >> i am afraid of more fires starting. i'm a little nervous about that and the tall weeds and my house just being rebuilt. i don't want it to get burned again. happening today, hundreds of immigration protests are being planned across the country as part of a day of action opposing the government's policy of separating children from their parents. 25 cities throughout the bay area will hold protests, including at de-loras park in san francisco. mayor mark ferrell will join other elected officials and community leaders today's march.

it starts at 10:00 this morning followed by a rally at civic center. and in oakland, that march starts at 10:30 at lakeside park on bell view avenue. at 1:00, demonstrators will gather at city hall. new this morning, this photo was posted on twitter yesterday afternoon showing what appears to be an oakland police officer sleeping. now the department is investigating what exactly happened. in a tweet, they say opd is aware of the social media post and we have identified the officer. we have confirmed the officer was not in a medical emergency. we expect our officers to be awake and fully focused on their assigned duties. the department is looking further into this two men are looking into a plea deal. yesterday the judge offered an

agreement. if they plead no contest to 36 counts of involuntary man slaughter, they could be sentenced to eight years in prison. that could mean less than three years served given other factors. both men would need to accept the deal for it to work. almena's attorney says his client is ready to move forward. >> my client has a conscious. he's tale taking responsibility to alleviate the pain and suffering of everyone, the trauma that will be produced by the trial. >> harris' attorneys have vowed not to accept a deal in the past, maintaining he is innocent. they did not say where they stand now. the next court date is next tuesday. the trial is set to start mid-july. happening today, san francisco hopes to tackle gun violence by taking firearms off the street. the police department is working with the group united playas to hold a gun buy-back event. they are offering $100 for handguns and $200 for assault weapons.

guns will be accepted from 8:00 this morning until noon, no questions asked. the drop-off will be at the united playa center on howard street between 6:00 and 7:00. a san mateo county beach will soon get a makeover after being tarnished for years of late night partying. state lawmakers and other stakeholders announced the creation of a new county park. $5 million of state money will help build a ranger station as well as rest rooms there. plans call for establishing public access to nearby martin's beach. a silicone valley billionaire bought the road and locked a gate blocking public access. >> we all share the desire to have that gate open sun up to sun down so the public can enjoy it every day of the year. >> state officials might even try to buy that road through eminent domain. courts have ordered the owner to keep the road open. the owner, however, is fighting those rulings. time now, 5:09 on this saturday

break news out of the south bay. two officers are recovering from two different police departments. santa clara police officers were chasing that car into san jose. at the same time, a san jose police officer was respond to go a separate call about a fight when he collided with the santa clara police call. the stolen car has not been found. both officers are being treated for nonlife threatening injuries. 5:13 is our time. hundreds of people walk the streets of annapolis, maryland, in honor of those killed in the news room attack. abc's janai norman has more. >> we ask that you join us now in observing a reflective moment of silence. >> candlelight vigils in annapolis honoring the five victims who went to work thursday but never made it home

>> honoring those five victims who this time were coworkers and friends. janai norman, abc news, annapolis, maryland. we're learning more about the prime suspect in the cold case from 1974 on the stanford campus. that man, steve crawford, shot himself to death with a handgun when sheriff's deputies tried to serve a search warrant at his san jose apartment on thursday. investigators discovered a 2-year-old suicide note in his inside his apartment. they believe crawford wrote it after being interviewed by detectives about the murder of arlis perry. perry's sister told abc 7 news by phone that she feels a sense of closure. it does, for me. my mom, i'm not so sure. i mean, she's 8 years old and she's struggling with the why, i think. and i said, you know, mom, i don't think we're ever going to know the why. >> deputies admit they may never know the motive for perry's cama was fnd recording

in the bathroom of a santa cruz coffee shop and sheriff's deputies have arrested a suspect. it happened last thursday at the verb coffee roasters downtown. investigators were able to pinpoint the suspect using surveillance video. deputies arrested 35-year-old sage savage. the camera was found in the rest room between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. the sheriff is asking anyone who was in the coffee shop during that time to come forward. a warning in pal alto for dog owners. animal control removed a rapid bat from the park yesterday. animal control doesn't know if any dogs or humans came in contact with the bat. they say the bats can fall from trees during hot weather. if you see one, don't touch it. call your local animal service. your postcard sized income tax return form is finally here. the treasury secretary and irs unveiled the new version yesterday. and while the 1040 tax form is

in the higher elevations, you will notice more of a breeze. so get ready for a warm to hot day with triple digits inland. temperatures coming up by about 5 to 10 degrees compared to yesterday. and then there's a high fire danger. dallas red flag warning in effect. it's spare the air day and heat eases tomorrow. so there's some relief on the way. heat advisory in effect for parts of the north bay. throughout the day, heat illness possible through mendocino county and parts of the north. get ready for well above-average temperatures and a red flag warning in effect, as well, through parts of the north bay for the north bay mountains until 11:00 tonight. gusts up to 40 miles per hour. very low humidity. so any fires that start can spread very rapidly. and for lake county and solano county, the red flag warning continues until tomorrow morning. so poor air quality expected today for the inland east bay and santa clara valley.

i we worked with pg&eof to save energy because wenie. wanted to help the school. they would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didn't cut off the light. the teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. so they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights! those three young ladies were teaching the whole school about energy efficiency. we actually saved $50,000. and that's just one school, two semesters, three girls. together, we're building a better california.
