it's saturday, june 30th. good morning and thanks so much for waking up with us. let's start with a first look at the forecast. hi, francis. >> hi, chris. temperatures are climbing today. we'll be near the triple digits in some inland areas. here is live doppler 7 and a satellite image. mostly under clear skies right now. here is how the day plays out. by 7:00 this morning, temperatures hitting the 70s in some neighborhoods like fairfield and concord. san francisco will be near 60 degrees. by noon, look for the triple digits in some inland areas like fairfield/cloverdale. we'll see lots of 80s around the bay. by this afternoon, 3:00, you'll see some of the highest temperatures and look for 73 in san francisco. near triple digits in fairfield,

antioch and clover dale. tonight, it will start to cool down, but rather slowly. so still 90 degrees in some areas. around the bay and at the coast, temperatures will be cooling down into the 60s. overnight, as well, not much relief. but i'll let you know how much cooler it will be tomorrow coming up. >> breaking news out of the south bay, two police officers from two different agencies are recovering this morning after being involved in a crash. it hands just before 2:00 on west montague expressway and north first street in san jose. santa clara police officers were chasing the driver of a stolen car into san jose. at the same time, a san jose police officer was responds to go a separate call about a fight when he collided with the santa clara police car. the stolen car was not involved in the crash and has not been found. both officers are being treated for nonlife threatening injuries. this morning, resdents in

concord are back in their homes after a grass fire came dangerously close. all evacuation orders were lifted just after 10:00 last night. the fire is now 85% contained and has burned 268 acres. five fighters spent the night to keep an eye on flare-ups there. abc 7 news reporter katie yutes spoke with some very graceful neighbors. >> into the night, crews are working hot spots from a fast-moving fire that threatened hundreds of homes. it started near cal road. people who lived in montecto neighborhoods watched flames swarm towards their homes. >> to the top of the sky. they couldn't have been any bigger. the whole backyard was smoked. >> police evacuated hundreds of people from montecito and the crystal ranch community. >> what can you do? you feel helpless. but when you see all these fire crews, everybody around is like, wow. we have heros around us. >> helicopters and air tankers fought from the sky as firefighters battled the four

alarm fire on the ground. >> thanks to a quick and overwhelming response, we were able to protect all of those structures. >> oh, my god. the flares were all the way to my back fence and thank god for them. they did a great job and saved my home. i'm so thankful. >> the elmores fought to evacuate. >> this is what those people went through. i'm going to get emotional. i just thought, my god, this is what they went through and this is what's happening to us. and you think, what to grab? >> fortunately, the hoa had recently cleared brush ahead of fire season. >> if those homeowners had not abated their weeds, the situation would have turned out much differently from this. >> wpss tell investigators that a white diesel pickup truck was back firing and sparking along ignacio valley road. it may have caused the fire, but it is still under investigation. the fire was so large,

satellite imagery picked it up. the national weather service tweeted video showing it spreading through con tr acosta county. fire crews were busy around the bay area yesterday. in livermore, crews have a 60-acre fire 50% kabdz. another fire in morgan hill has burned nearly 9 acres. and a small fire in bethel island has burned several old cars and about two acres. the hot and dry weather has brought more fear of fire than actual fun. abc news reporter amanda delcastillio has the story. >> the smallest ignition source can light this on fire. >> even with don't rain last year, fuel conditions around the bay area never fully recovered from california's drought. bone-dry conditions and a simple spark with lead the a serious problem. >> people usually use fireworks

in and around neighborhoods, so the conditions just are not set up for people to use fireworks. >> a message suzanne maroney is trying to get through to her neighbors every fourth of july. >> so far, it never failed. it's been a war zone. >> her group, stop illegal fireworks in san jose has been promoting the city's improvement online reporting tool meant to catch those setting off illegal sparklers. the city of san jose asking residents to snap, click and report. >> at this point, we don't know how else to approach it. >> so far this year, those living in san jose have paid fines up to $5,500. earlier this week in oakland, one person was arrested in a fireworks bust worth $30,000 had. >> dallas hundred shots in here. >> while the fines and consequences do add up, it's what money can't buy that has neighbors like maroney fed up. >> fear of fire, especially in old neighborhoods with big trees and lots of out buildings, that -- your sense of security

i don't want it to burn again. >> the minimum fine for fireworks in santa rosa is $500, but could go even much higher than that. happening today, hundreds of immigration protests will take place across the country as part of a day of action opposing the government's policy of separating children from their parent. 25 cities throughout the bay area will hold protests, including at deloress park in san francisco. today's march starts at 10:00 this morning. in oak left hand side, a march starts at 10:30 on lakeside park. at 11:00, demonstrators will gather at san jose city hall. at noon wab protest is planned on the steps of old city hall near berkeley. this photo was posted on twitter yesterday afternoon showing what appears to be an oakland police officer sleeping. now the police department is

investigating exactly what happened. they say in a tweet opd is a aware of the social media post and we have identified the officer. we have confirmed the officer was not in a medical emergency. we expect our officers to be aware and fully focused on their assigned duties. the department is looking further into this incident. two men charged in the deadly goship fire are negotiating plea deals. the wife of one defendant told abc news it's not a done deal just yesterday. yesterday, abc news was at the alameda county superior court where the judge offered an agreement. if they plead no contest to 36 counts of involuntary man slaughter with, they could be sentenced to eight years in prison. that could mean less than three years served given other factors. almeda's attorney says his client is ready to move forward. >> my client has a conscious and is taking responsibility to alleviate the pain and suffering of everyone, the trauma that will be produced with by the

trial. >> harris' attorneys have vowed not to accept a deal in the past, maintaining he is innocent. they did not say where they stand now. the next door date is next tuesday and the trial is set to start mid-july. happening today, san francisco hopes to tackle gun violence by taking fireworks off the street. the police department is working with the group united playas to hold a gun buyback. they're offering $100 for handguns and $200 for assault weapons. guns will be accepted from 8:00 this morning until noon, no questions asked. the drop-off will be at the united playas center on howard street between 6:00 and 7:00. a beach will soon get a makeover after being tarnished by late night partying. yesterday, abc 7 news was at thd $5 million in money will help establish public access to val

hundreds of people walk the streets in annapolis, maryland, in honor of those killed in a gunman attack. abc news reporter janai norman has more.

>> we ask that you join us now in obseving a reflective moment of silence. >> candlelight vigils in annapolis honoring the five victims who went to work thursday but never made it home at the "capital gazette." the faces of those victims on the front page of the gazette, staff resilient, determined to cover the story involving their own. >> several shots have been fired. the suspect, jared ramos, behind bars without bond. prosecutors saying he planned the attack, armed with a 12 gauge shotgun, barricading the back door to the news room. >> there was one victim that had attempted to escape through the back door and was shot. >> the focus now for so many on those victims. wendi winters, a special publication editor who described herself as a proud navy money. gerald fischman worked for the gazette for over 25 years as did john mcnamara. sales associate rebecca smith had just started at the paper

and edz toeditor and columnist b hiaasen remembered by many as a mentor. >> honoring those five victims who this time were coworkers and friends. janai norman, abc news, annapolis, maryland. a camera was found recording in the bathroom of a santa cruz coffee shop and sheriff deputies arrested a suspect. investigators were able to pinpoint the suspect using surveillance video. futs arrested 35-year-old sage savage. the camera was in the rest room between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. the sheriff is asking anyone who was in the coffee shop during that time to come forward. a warning now in pal alto for dog owners there. animal control removed a rapid about the bat from hoover park yesterday. the bat was found in the dog run

area. it tested positive for the raybies virus. animal control does not know if any dogs or humans came in contact with the bat. they say bats can fall from trees during hot weather. if you see one, don't touch it. all your local animal service. your postcard sized income tax return form is timely here. the treasury, secretary and irs unveiled the new version yesterday. while the 1040 tax form is getting smaller, it's still a bit complicated. the new form does not have room for.popular multiple deductions. those will need to be submitted on accompanying worksheets. it's the end of an era. toys r us stores choseder their doors for the final time last night. carlos has a nostalgic good-bye for shoppers. ♪ i want to be a toys r us kid >> for more than 60 years, toys r us has been a place where you never had to grow up. >> since i was little growing up and for her, her very first toy was from here. so, like, it's been very emotional, you know.

>> some tears? >> yeah, for sure. >> dozens of people dropped by the san mateo store to pay their final respects, if you will, even snapping pictures and selfies. >> i was hoping to find one last thing, kind of have one last memory. >> but by 5:00, it was mostly empty. somehow this family was able to go home with not one, but three kitchen sets for $15 apiece. they just had to take apart the set. >> we were fixing that because we're going to take it home right now. >> some people still got lucky. we actually scored and found the last two toys of the store behind the counters. >> most left empty handed. >> i didn't even really make it in. i was told there was nothing left. >> with no more toys and the shelves sitting empty, the only thing left to sell are the shelves. and those fixtures pretty popular. >> we own a grocery store, so we bought some fixtures, as sad of a day as it is.

we're seeing some mid 60s through fairfield and.concourt and livermore. this time we're looking out towards the golden gate bridge. it's beautiful out there right now. you don't even need a jacket in san francisco and you won't need one throughout the day. so warm to hot today. triple digits inland. we have high fire danger, a spare the air alert in effect, as well. and then likely the heat will ease starting tomorrow and that's great news for some of the inland communities. there's a heat advisory in effect. especially for some of the north bay areas highlighted in orange here. heat illness possible. temperatures climb up from 95 to 105 degrees this afternoon. so that's well above average. red flag warning in effect for some of the north bay mountains in mendocino county until 11:00 tonight. gusts up to 40 miles per hour. humidity is low. any fires that start will spread rapidly. for parts of lake county and solano county, that will

continue until tomorrow morning. so it's a spare the air alert today with poor air quality expected in the inland east bay and until the santa clara valley. try to cut back on pollution and limit time-out doors. i wouldn't want to be out in the hot sun, especially in some of the triple digits areas like santa rosa, a hundred. fairfield and antioch, 102. san francisco, more comfortable at 76. around the bay, we'll see 80s like oakland. 83. pal alto, 87. now, overnight tonight, we'll start to see the onshore breeze increase, but it's still going to be very mild tomorrow morning when you wake up. still some 60s out there, like antioch and some 50s around the bay, even some upper 50s in san mateo. so the clouds will start to move in tomorrow morning, but for the most part, this onshore flow

affects temperatures, but we'll still see a lot of sunshine throughout the day tomorrow. to here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. hot today, inland areas, topping off at 102 degrees around the bay. upper 80s at the coast. upper 60s to near 70. with a slight on-show flow, the heat eases tomorrow coming down by about 10 degrees in the inland area. and on shore continues to develop into wednesday with partly cloudy conditions and the coolest temperatures on the week. we'll be about 20 degrees cooler by wednesday for inland areas. and more comfortable around the bay in the low 70s near 60 at the coast. and then things slowly ramp.up for the end of the workweek. >> all right. good reminder to stay hydrate and to wear that sunscreen. >> of course. yes, chris. coming up, do you wash your hands properly? a new

a deaf puppy fuld to safety after nearly 30 hours in a hole. the rescue that captivated a small town in alabama. it's all coming up. a new study finds 97% of the time, people are not washing their hands properly. researchers from the u.s. department of agriculture asked 400 people to wash their hands in test kitchens and prepare food. they found nearly half of them spread bacteria while making food. most people did not wash their hands for the necessary 20 seconds. they also had found many did not dry their hands with a clean towel. the cdc estimates that 48 million americans get food born illnesses each year. many of those cases could be prevented with proper hand washing. a group of santa rosa beer house patrons ponied up for a rainbow flag and had it painted right on to the street. take a look. it's in front of the brew coffee and beer house. it was painted thursday in about four hours.

it's half past the hour on this saturday morning. thanks so much for joining us. we're looking ahead to a warm weather across the bay. here is francis with a preview of the accuweather forecast. >> it's going to sizzle inland today. check out temperatures right now. they range from 48 degrees in half moon bay all the way up to 75 degrees in clearlake. lots of 50s around the bay. san francisco, 56. hayward, up to 60 degrees. mountain view, 61. loss catos at 71 degrees right now. inland, by 8:00, we'll hit the low 80s. sunshine all day long. the warmest temperatures will be in the afternoon near 103 degrees for some of our hottest locations. and even by 8:00 this evening,

stable condition at the uc davis burn center in sacramento. his clothes caught fire at a city-run science camp. it happened on thursday. now there are a lot of questions about why it happened. >> all of us are completely horrified. >> this is the napa classroom where a week long chemistry camp for kids, ages 8 to 12, was happening. but on thursday, a science experiment demonstration went terribly wrong. >> something happened. there was a fire. unfortunately a young man, 9-year-old, was burned. >> the 9-year-old boy and eight other kids were watching instructors conduct the sugar snake combustion experiment, like this one. it's what happened when baking soda, sugar and alcohol is mixed together and lit on fire. >> it's never done anything like this before. >> the class called by scientopia discovery center. michelle has been the director since 2013. she dints witness the accident,

but says safety measures were followed. >> the kids were standing about five feet away from the experiment. the boy's shirt caught on fire and my staff reacted promptly to get him down to stop, drop and roll. >> staff called 911. paramedics took the boy to the hospital. >> we absolutely wish him the best possible recovery. >> chemistry camp was canceled friday along with future camp these summer. >> obviously, this is a tragic accident that occurred, but we want to understand what caused this so we can ensure that we'll avoid any recurrence in the future. >> scientopia says no more sugar snake experiments for now. a full safety review is under way. we will review all of our experiments for additional safety measures. >> the napa fire department is stigating thaccinty will be reeang sar snake experiment to determine what happened. families whose kids attended the

camp are being offered full refunds. santa clara county officials are alarmed by a spike in child drownings this year. now about a week into the summer, they're asking the public to be vigilant around pools. over the past two months, eight children have been taken to san jose medical center to be treated for drownings. sadly, two of the cases were fatal. it's concerning because the medical staff has already seen more incidents year-to-date than they did for all of 2017 >> and it only takes minutes of time with them underneath the . water submerged for them to -- their oxygen levels to drop and for brain damage to occur. >> even though lifeguards are on duty, we want to ensure that parents are attending to their children. >> there were a total of 18 unintentional drowning deaths in the county last year. that's across all ages. >> still ahead on abc 7 mornings, the bay area is home to a dance group like no other. up next, we introduce you to a young man trying to live out what some may think is an impossible dream.

degrees. half moon bay a cool 48 degrees. napa cool at 51 and mid 60s through fairfield and concord, livermore at 60. this time we're looking from sutro out towards alcatraz, angel island. look for a warm to hot day today with triple digits inland. high fire danger today. there's a spare the air alert and the heat will ease tomorrow. so it's better news for some of those inland communities that need some relief. a heat advisory has been issued for today for some of the north bay areas where temperatures could be as warm as even 105 degrees in some local sots. that's a good 15 to 20 degrees above average, so look out for that. heat illness is possible. high fire danger were a red flag warning in effect for north bay mountains and mendocino county.
