it's dramatically smaller, and and we're learning now that moderate republican senator susan collins may be a tough sell. abc's kenneth moton joins us now with the latest from washington. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: lebron james likely not on president trump's list, maggie and kendis, but, yes, we've learned the president is down to five potential supreme court nominees who are said to be under serious consideration to replace justice anthony kennedy. president trump back in washington and back to preparing for a battle over his pick for the supreme court. >> it's probably going to be vicious because the other side, all they could do is obstruct and resist. you know their whole thing is resist. >> reporter: the president on but the resistance could also come from some members of his own party. >> a candidate for this important position who would overturn roe v. wade would not be acceptable to me because that would indicate an activist agenda. >> reporter: but will the president ask potential nominees about the landmark abortion case? >> well, that's a big one and probably not. they're all saying don't do that.

>> reporter: the supreme court showdown comes as the president continues to deal with backlash from his zero tolerance immigration policy. [ chanting ] massive rallies over the weekend in cities across the country to protest the policy that led to illegal immigrant family separations at the border. >> i understand rules. i understand process. i understand all that but this is children. we're talking about children. >> reporter: from celebrities to politicians, some including democratic senator elizabeth warren on cnn criticizing immigration and customs enforcement. >> we need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom starting by replacing i.c.e. >> reporter: president trump seized on those comments saying democrats want open borders and massive crime, an issue he thinks will help republicans during the midterm election. maggie and kendis. >> all right, our kenneth moton there. and speaking of elections let's head south where president trump was among the first to congratulate mexico's newly elected president tweeting that he looks forward to working with

him, and like trump, the populist, andres manuel lopez obrador, rode the wave of voter anger and discontent to victory with a mandate to upend the political establishment. he's vowing to tackle corruption, violence and poverty. some have called him mexico's bernie sanders. he says he wants friendship and cooperation with the u.s. and abc news has confirmed that u.s. and north korean officials met in the demilitarized zone sunday for their first face-to-face talks since the historic summit between president trump and kim jong-un. word of the meeting comes amid multiple reports that kim is still producing material for nuclear bombs and does not intend to fully denuclearize. still national security adviser john bolton says the u.s. has a plan for north korea to get rid of its nuclear weapons within one year. back here at home, authorities say vengeance was the motive behind a stabbing rampage at a 3-year-old's birthday party in boise, idaho. six kids and three adults were injured. some of them suffered life-threatening injuries.

authorities say the suspect, timmy kinner, was furious that he had been asked to leave an apartment in that building last week because of bad behavior. well, the police chief says the community this morning is stunned at the violence. >> the crime scene, the faces of the parents struggling, the tears coming down their faces, the faces of the children in the hospital beds will be something that i'll carry with me for the rest of my life. >> that apartment complex houses refugees. the victims are from war-torn regions of africa and the middle east. the police say there's no evidence that this was a hate crime. and we turn now to that monumental decision from lebron james to join the los angeles lakers. on the news ticket prices are already soaring for next season. the superstar's agreement to leave cleveland for the second time in his career has sent shock waves through the sports world. he's the nba's biggest star. >> james drives past livingston

[ cheers ] >> yay. >> reporter: fans in cleveland, they're sharing their disappointment. >> i was very disappointed in lebron. i think that he needs to be a little bit more loyal. i think this is his hometown, and he should have stayed with it. >> reporter: james posted a story on instagram featuring a massive crowd celebrating the nba title that james helped bring them two years ago. james writing, thank you, northeast ohio, for an incredible four seasons. this will always be home. and a statement on twitter from the lebron james family foundation saying in part, i may

be working somewhere else now, but akron will always be my home. james made his move less than 24 hours after the nba's free agency period opened. lakers great kobe bryant quickly posting on twitter, welcome to the family, king james. #lakers4life. #striveforgreatness. personally james has played in eight straight nba finals with the cavaliers and the miami heat. with the addition of james, overnight some vegas sports books now have the lakers as among the top contenders for next year's title. only the two-time defending champion golden state warriors have better odds. overnight the chairman of the cavaliers released a statement thanking james for ending cleveland's championship curse and he also said the team looks forward to retiring lebron's number 23 jersey very soon. now to the summer scorcher, the heat wave baking the eastern u.s. is expected to last through the july 4th holiday setting records in many areas. in the meantime, the heat in the west is hampering efforts to

control the wildfire north of sacramento. the blaze has burned more than 50 square miles forcing some evacuations. in southern colorado more than 2,000 homes have been evacuated because of a fire that's burned nearly 80 square miles there. an arson suspect has now been arrested. let's take a look now at your forecast for monday. good morning. the real feel will hover between 100 to 110 from d.c., philly, new york up towards boston over towards syracuse, cleveland, even the pittsburgh area. reduced air quality and high energy demand because of the need of air-conditioning. there will be an outbreak of hit and miss spot showers throughout the ohio valley region. that's just going to keep the very hot air along the east coast. very hot for us and sweltering throughout the south central part of the country and for the southwest, dry and hot there, as well. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. well, coming up, the moose that crashed one couple's wedding. but first more of our top stories are next including the

we're back with new details about that deadly boat explosion in the bahamas. 12 people were on board the tour boat when it burst into flames. one american tourist was killed and nine others injured. the coast guard air-lifted some victims to a hospital in florida. one of the injured, 22-year-old stefanie schaffer, is in critical condition. both of her legs had to be amputated. she was traveling with her family. the cause of the explosion remains unclear. a cruise ship worker has been rescued 22 hours after going overboard into the waters north of cuba. the crew member of a norwegian

cruise ship went overboard saturday. a few minutes later, the coast guard launched a search but had no luck. on sunday morning the man was spotted by crew members and guests aboard another cruise ship, the "carnival glory" drifting in the water about 20 miles north of cuba. you can hear them cheering as he was pulled to safety. he is now in stable condition. no word yet on how he went overboard from the ship. the trump administration has reportedly prepared to ask congress to step aside on tariffs. the news website axios reports a draft bill would allow the president to raise tariffs without congressional approval, but most advisers think it has little chance of passing. in the meantime, canada is now imposing more than $12.5 billion in tariffs on u.s. goods in response to trump's tariffs. and seattle has become the first major city in the u.s. to ban the use of plastic straws in utensils and businesses. ignoring it could result in a $250 fine. an estimated 40% of plastics found in the ocean are from single use plastics like straws.

we're back with this incredible video capturing the moment a road collapses in southwest china. it sent the retaining walls plunging to the ground. no deaths or injuries reported and not clear what caused all this, but some officials are blaming recent heavy rains for softening the hillside. now to that hollywood-style prison escape by a gangster in france. this morning nearly 3,000 police officers have joined the manhunt for him. >> and all it took was a hijacked helicopter, a getaway car and a group of armed accomplices to escape. here's abc's eva pilgrim. >> reporter: a daring jailbreak from this french prison. notorious gangster redoine faid muer breaking out by helicopter. in this video you see two men dressed in black running out, then a helicopter pulling away from the prison courtyard with faid inside. onlookers cheering. the getaway copter later found burnt near a suburb of paris. the french justice minister saying the accomplices took the

helicopter pilot hostage and forced him to go to the prison. no one was injured. this isn't the first time faid has managed to escape from prison. he escaped in 2013 and was caught shortly after. but it wasn't always like this for the gangster. in 2010 he vowed to change his life around going on a press tour promoting a book about his criminal past. authorities on an extensive manhunt to find him. now, french media is reporting that drones were seen flying over the prison for several months leading officials to think he was planning this for some time. eva pilgrim, abc news, london. >> thanks, eva. and rescue teams say they're now making progress in the search for a youth soccer team trapped inside a cave in thailand. the 12 boys and their coach have divers now believe they're getting closer to higher ground inside the cave where the group may be stranded. large pumps have been used to lower the water levels in the cave.

meanwhile, students at the boys' school were seen here praying for their classmates' safe return. port state university in oregon are protesting the fatal shooting of a navy veteran by campus police. eyewitnesses say jason washington was trying to break up a fight outside a sports bar when he was shot. the 45-year-old was a postal worker with a wife, three daughters and a granddaughter. the students say this is why they fought against campus police carrying guns. >> i understand the guy has a gun, and you don't know but still why? we didn't feel threatened with the guy with the gun. he was a cool guy. nothing was going to happen. >> the two portland state officers are now on paid administrative leave. they reportedly opened fire when a gun fell from washington's pants and he tried to pick it up. the secret service has a new warning about a gas station scam this fourth of july holiday. they say more criminals are skimming credit card information from gas pumps. the crooks have hooked up devices that copy your card number when you pay.

thousands of customers have been affected with millions of dollars stolen. >> they'll take the stolen payment card number, and then they will re-encode a gift card or a credit card, and then they will use that to buy electronics, gift cards, stuff that they can fence on the gray market, the black market or the open market. >> the secret service says cases are open in all 50 states. agents say to protect yourself, pay by cash or use your credit card inside at the cashier. a bit of sports and two more second round matches are on the schedule today at the world cup. both games on sunday ended with penalty kick shootouts. the host there, russia, booked its place in the quarterfinals with a win over the heavily favored spain. denmark and croatia, in the meantime, traded goals in the first four minutes of their match, and then they went all the way to the penalties with croatia winning in the end. they play russia in one of saturday's quarterfinals. >> some exciting games coming up.

start. we have one issue in the san francisco area to talk about. it sounds like a solo vehicle crash. a mustang lost control on 101 right at the 9th street off ramp and hit the guardrail. on the other side of the bridge heading across into san francisco we have a stackup. no metering lights. the next traffic update in a couple minutes. and good morning to you. i want to show you that brand-new video just came in to our live desk a few minutes ago, the fire raging called the county fire that's burned more than 32,000 acres already. and we just got this new video moments before our newscast began. the fire is still burning out of control this morning. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is on the way to the scene now live for us in solano county. amy? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. we are on our way.

a very windy, dry wind shaking the news van as we made our way to the area where we plan to check on the progress of this fire. wind is the enemy of em all week right now.ghrs migt fire. it is called the county fire. it's burning east of lake berryessa, about 32,500 acres so far. a mandatory evacuation order is in place along highway 128 but not everyone is obeying the order. >> they said it was a mandatory evacuation. i said, no, i'm not going anywhere until -- i've been through some of this before so it wasn't really bad -- it's bad but it isn't threatening enough where i have a couple critters. >> reporter: no structures have burned, no injuries reported. firefighters heen called in from all over the state to battle this fire. it is moving extremely fast and at 116 structures are

threatened. they will have their work cut out for them today and for the rest of the week. reporting live from the road on the way to the fire, amy hollyfield. back to you, jessica, in the newsroom. thank you, amy. this is time lapse video in the nevada seismological lab in reno. you can see the smoke moving south last night. the camera here is perched on the el dorado national forest still 80 miles away from the fire. >> the pawnee fire spread to another 1,000 acres over the weekend. it has chared 14,500 acres of land and is 73% contained burning northwest of the county fire. there is still a mandatory evacuation order in effect for the community of double eagle where flames are threatening 50 structures. the pawnee fire destroyed 22 structures since it began a week ago saturday. we are posting fire updates on our website, also the abc 7 news app. make sure to sign up for push alerts and wll
