5:00 am
good morning on this monday, july 2nd. let's get right over to meteorologist mike nicco. hey, mike. good morning. hi, everybody. 5:00 straight up. the gray you're seeing here is the low cloudiness, the marine layer of clouds that are rolling in underneath the smoke and it's not a spare the air day so it's going to look pretty ugly this afternoon like it has the last couple of days. the air quality should remain okay. waking up mainly cloudy at 7:00. your accuweather 12-hour planner mid-50s to low 60s. we'll stay around 60 at the coast at noon. about 80 inland. cool to warm there. temperatures close to average at 4:00 under hazy sunshine. 59 at the coast. at 58 at the coast at 7:00 the rest of us in the low to mid-70s, a comfortable evening on the way. let's find out about that commute with alexis. i think we are going to have a lighter than average week here with the holidays. hopefully that will translate to a smooth commute for you.
5:01 am
we did start off with one issue, northbound 101 at the 9th street off ramp.hie and hit the guardr. that did clear so we did have a lane blocked there for a short time. a quick check of the plaza. a stackup in the cash lanes if you're coming up through the middle using fastrak. no issues and no metering lights yet. i'll be interested if we get those flipped on at the usual time or if it will be later because of the holiday week. next traffic update in a few minutes. hi, everyone. here at the live desk an update on this huge fire burning in yolo county. it's slowly starting to creep into napa county this morning. it's burned more than 82,000 acres and is only 2% contained.
5:02 am
the fire is now burning east of lake berryessa. no napa county residents are under evacuation orders at this very moment. if that changes throughout the morning we'll let you know. so far no structures have been destroyed but more than 100 are threatened. cal fire says full containment is expected friday so fingers crossed they can have that containment soon. natasha, back to you. even those of us nowhere near the fire are surrounded with evidence of the burning. >> many of us are seeing the orange skies. look at this picture. lots of haze, falling ash, and not to mention from time to time poor air quality. the bay area is under a smoke advisory. and look at this. you can barely make out alcatraz. the large fire in yolo county and now, of course, going into napa county blowing smoke into the bay area. at the same time so is the summer fog. >> smoke is sitting above the fog and so it's being trapped there and that's helpful to us, although we see the orange haze,
5:03 am
we're not actually getting the smoke but we are getting the ash raining out from it. >> the tower right near our abc 7 studios, the bay area air quality management district has tips for people as they deal with the smoke. they say avoid physical activity outside, especially kids. if it looks smoky, run your air conditioners in your home and car on recirculate. in the weather center with meteorologist mike nicco, even on saturday night as the sun was setting it was so red. >> very dramatic. >> what can we expect in terms of air quality today? >> the same as we've had the last couple of days, but the good news this will change starting tomorrow when we get a wind shift. a look at yesterday, the visible satellite. the gray you see along the coast is the southerly surge. that's been undercutting the smoke and keeping our air quality okay, in the lower levels where we are. now the gray or the brown -- i guess you could say the darker gray coming from the county

fire, the pawnee fire, moving the opposite, northeast to southwest. that's the smoke we've been dealing with and some of the ash that's been falling. i've been keeping track of the air quality. so far we've been doing okay because of the marine layer bringing in that plentiful clean air off the ocean. now at the surface, unfortunately, the winds are going to pick up for the firefighters starting later this evening and continuing for pretty much the rest of the week. so the conditions in that respect are going to get more damaging, if you will. but as far as what's going to happen with the temperatures, that new wind will drop the temperatures from the mid-90s to the mid-80s and then our upper level winds will start blowing out of the west and pushing that smoke away from us. the worst day moving forward is today for us. reggie? >> thanks, mike. many of you were shocked to see that bright orange sky. steven from napa posted this, the smoke that he saw, and put it on twitter.
