know a busy fourth is a must. >> we're hoping with fourth of july being on a wednesday this whole week would give us a bump but obviously with the fire, it's not happening. >> underneath the seat you have a fire extinguisher here. >> there are a few takers like these guys from latest, who stuck with the plan to spend the holiday week there. >> reporter: still going out on the lake? >> i can't get burned in the lake. yeah. we're up here to have fun. we're planning having some fun. >> reporter: firefighters are making progress both in the air and on the ground, where doziers and hand crews spent the day cutting lines, trying to hold the line and take advantage of the relatively benign weather conditions. sam do minco told us despite the smoke it looks a lot better today than last night, when he and his friends watched from a houseboat, a fireworks show like none they had ever seen.

both defendants have a hearing tomorrow. new details of a woman who drowned over the weekend at cowell state beach. a 47-year-old died yesterday trying to rescue several children at the beach. taking pictures of young family members when they were swept out in the waves. she went but got swept out herself. others saved the children but could not reach her. they said she did not know how to swim. bay area authorities on heightened alert for the fourth of july. they uncovered a terror plot where san francisco was mentioned. >> joining us with all the details on this one. >> 48-year-old demetrious pitts was given a public defender on terrorism charges. the american-born al qaeda

sympathizer planned to bomb cleveland but also considering san francisco. they say pitts got on their radar in 2015 when he sent a voice message to an internet based show threatening to destroy the u.s. military. they zeroed in on him last year when he posted al qaeda training photos saying muslims need to be ready. and in downtown cleveland, telling an undercover agent he planned to blow up a fourth of july parade this july and after that he wanted to bomb his birthplace, philadelphia, on labor day and discussed possibly traveling to san francisco to look for additional targets. >> it's a city that has iconic value. this is something terrorists go after. >> pitts has previously been convicted of robbery, assault and theft in ohio and wanted for robbery and gun charges in

after being found after 24 hours northwest of cuba. the search was called off and all of a sudden a passing cruise ship spotted him. the cruise ship company is still not saying how the man fell off the ship. >> an incredible rescue. a crew member from the norwegian get away lost at sea for 22 hours found alive. the search was even suspended and travel mortgage than 1600 square miles found nothing on saturday, with the coast guard. >> quick update, we have now decided to stop searching for our crew member. >> reporter: another cruise ship, carnival glory spotted the 33-year-old and using a lifeboat, pulled he man to safety 31 miles to cuba. >> we turned the ship around and maneuver the carnival glory near where the person was.

>> it is still breezy out there. >> it is. good news because it's mixing out the smoke and ash from the fire. breathing is improving and air quality as well. here's a look at the doppler 7. a cooler than average afternoon for much of the bay area and breezy and chilly by some standards. rain ranging 12-18 miles an hour. generally an onshore flow, good news, pushing the smoke and ash away from the bay area. this is a nice view looking from our rooftop camera. 62 degrees in san francisco. across the bay at 66, 74 in san jose, 80 in gilroy and 61 at half moon bay. this is how it looks from our camera. looks like he will overrun the city of san francisco. 72 degrees in santa rosa.

the san jose airport will temporarily halt flights due to the fourth of july close to the meadows where the celebration will be held. wednesday it will close two runways between 9:30 and ten p.m., which should have minimal impact. >> based upon the scheduled flight activity during that half hour time period we expect only three flights may be impacted. we have 250 flights that operate

already booked for this year and for 2023. but they were very frank with the san francisco travel association telling them after that date they will no longer hold their conventions here in san francisco. the homeless encampments and drug addicts have become more visible to tourists at times overshadowing the many landmarks that make san francisco unique. groups that hold their conventions here continue to take notice. >> not just groups but a lot of individual travelers, we hear a lot from individual travelers that have had negative experiences on the streets and say they don't want to come back to san francisco. >> reporter: chicago has the most medical associations in the country. one of those associations heard from one of its members how unsafe they feel. booked for th year and 2023, they will no longer hold conventions here in the future.
