sueded by the flames they forged ahead including the jet ski. >> there's no boats out there. yeah. the fire scared everyone away. this is awesome, a dream. >> reporter: a lake that would normally be bustling with holiday activity this week but mostly deserted, in their slips thanks to the county fire. >> it is nice here. the smoke is a problem. if the wind turns a little bit we'll be good. >> reporter: firefighters are making progress both in the air and on the ground, where doziers and hand crews tried to cut the lines. >> we will try to work throughout the evening and build a direct line going down the fire's edge with a low intensity

burn, we can keep firefighters a little closer to the edge and pinch off the fire as it comes to us. >> reporter: this is a live look at this ridge behind me. you can see the dark thick smoke from the top of the ridge expecting the fire to come over the hill shortly. they have dug lines where i am standing and holding the line here along this roadway. we're expecting updated numbers at 7:00, expecting the acreage will grow, not sure about the 8% containment number. evacuations are holding steady at 116 homes. live near lake berryessa. >> thank you. a satellite has picked up the vast amount of smoke from this fire. you can see it in this image from the weather service. we will go to sandy patel for the latest on wind conditions.

>> let's look at conditions. it is hot, 98 degrees. humidity 26%. still dry there. winds are gusting at 12 miles an hour. it will be gusty and not good for firefighters. it's switching from southwest to north again and means you will see a little more smoke. the general area it's moving is west. we expect the wind to shift and see it shift to the sierra nevada and expect to see a change late in thing hours. a fire in moraga appears to be in control. showing how close homes from buckingham drive. a block from the high school and

the valley shopping center, if you're familiar with the area. kitty. >> we have a positive update for you. evacuees should be allowed in their home within an hour. a lot has changed. they were able to hold this line along moraga road. choppers and planes have stopped at this point. along buckingham drive and fortunately no damage tonight even though they were evacuated. sky 7 shows how close the fire came to those homes and they had to use the back yards to access the hillside. it was warm today, not exceptionally hot. there were breezy conditions earlier but the humidity is helping. it is cooling off out here. neighbors tell me they heard some weed abatement happening today, weed whacker or mower,

they think that may have sparked the fire. tall weeds in the back hov this hill and a wet winter helped the growth. >> we've lived here 50 years. it's the highest it's ever been. we know the person who does the grading for the fire trails and said the same thing. >> it's a steep area and a lot of it burned behind the homes. wasn't great access. we ended up laying homes in back yards and over fences to get to it. >> reporter: some tense moments this afternoon. the fire is 75% contained. they called for three alarms. two water helicopters and two flame retard dent flames we showed you earlier. they are cutting a fire with a bulldozer along this entire charred area. a crew will be onsite automatic night.

"abc news" caught up with the men's attorneys. an announcement on a plea deal could come tomorrow.

the mercury news today cites an e-mail from the district attorney saying almeda may receive nine years and the other, six. almeda turned down a plea offer for an 18 year sentence. the early morning shooting death by a secure guard. melanie woodrow spoke with her sister. >> she says her brother came to the united states from the philippines to support his family back home. she says she can't imagine who would want to hurt him. police received shots fired this morning. a neighbor who did not want to be identified said she heard them. >> i didn't see anyone. on the side of my building, that's where the action was.

>> we have to live here and some people are terrified. >> reporter: the coroner's office identified the victim as romero, a security guard staying in this trailer going around this shift going around this construction project. his sister said he was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather in the philippines. >> he stayed because he wants to support the family. at the same time, he doesn't care whatever hardship he encounters. >> reporter: the san francisco police say they are looking for surveillance video and multiple cameras across the street from the construction site. >> we will hopefully get new information for this suspect. >> i'm sure they're going to help you with whatever information they bring.
