residences. >> abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard was in court today and has details on this plea deal. >> reporter: that's right, dan, this happened just moments ago. there will be no trial for two defendants on the ghost ship warehouse fire, both men could have faced up to 40 years in prison. instead, the ghost ship's master tenant will serve nine years. max harris, the artist, creative director, artist collective creative director gets six years. both men pled no contest to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter in the tragic fire which killed 36 people in 2016. attorneys for both men say their clients are remorseful. >> it's not what i would call devastating, and my client is a prisoner who has fulfilled all of his duties and obligations. so we anticipate that he will be

out in 3 1/2 years. >> there's no punishment that could possibly be adequate to punish someone who had a hand in the tragedy. but the legal system looks at all different aspects of the situation and tries to reach a result that's fair and just. >> today's a bittersweet day that max is able to move forward. but we also recognize that the families are only beginning their process towards healing. and we also understand that they may never get there. >> now, both men will have the ability to serve halftime with good behavior and time served, making the earliest release date as soon as 23 months. judge morris jacobson set a sentencing date of august 9th and 10th, at which time victims' families will be able to address

the court. >> i'm sure so many emotions surrounding today's decision. were the names of the victims read in court today, cornell? >> reporter: dion, they were, and i have to tell you, you could have heard a pin drop. every single name, every single victim was read in court. each of the defendants was forced to give a plea to each of the counts of involuntary manslaughter, each one a life. >> dramatic, really, thank you, cornell, very much. 36 people died in the ghost ship fire on december 2nd, 2016. the oakland fire department has been criticized for a lack of inspection at the warehouse, and for not cracking down on hazards. in march of 2017, oakland fire chiefd retired. in 2018, the fire marshal resigned. coming up at 5:00, hear from the victims' families and what they think of today's plea deal. and for a look back at the

victims and more details of this plea agreement, go to abc7news.com or download the abc 7 news app. happening right now, commuters face delays crossing the southern end of san francisco bay because of an accident on the dun barton bridge. this is a live look at the eastbound lanes where only one lane is intermitt tently open. as the camera zooms out, you can see just how much backup there is. there is backup traffic toward the menlo park end of the span. the highway patrol is letting drivers pass the scene only for a few minutes at a time though. if you are aheading from the peninsula to the eastbound, your best bes t is to avoid the brid. >> fires burning across california, more than a dozen burning with one of the biggest right here, 70,000 acres in yolo and napa countys. >> it's just 5% contained.

freedman, abc 7 news. the county fire is growing quickly, doubling ine since yesterday. >> abc 7 news anchor kristen vee joins us now with a visual of how much land is burning. >> the county fire is over 70,000 acres. it stretched in guinda to napa county. if this fire were berning in the bay area, it would basically cover from the north, san francisco, all the way down, daly city, and stopping at about san mateo right there. think about how vast that area is. the county fire is about twice the size of san francisco and still growing. let's get a feel for the size of the pawnee fire in lake county. next to the indian valley reservoir. on your left you can see it's much smaller, having scorched under 15,000 acres. look at the right, if this were burning in the bay area, it would cover not even all of san francisco, just the red parts right there.

so maybe less than half of the city, a lot smaller fire. also want to show you the immense smoke from these fires. you can clearly see it from the satellite image from the national weather service. fortunatelily, the marine layer has really been keeping the smoke at higher elevations yesterday and today, keeping the skies from getting too hazy like we saw over the weekend. dan and dion? >> great visuals there, kristen, thanks. all evacuations around the pawnee fire in lake county have now been lifted. residents of the double eagle ranch area are being allowed to return home. the fire has burned nearly 15,000 acres, but is now 80% contained. >> the weather conditions are always critical in fighting these fires, give you the latest on that now. >> and with that, spencer christ snding by with a forecast talking about relief in sight. >> hoping for some, dion, it will get cooler later in ths wa windy at the sites of both fires. pawnee fire first, where it's 87 degrees right now, relative humidity only 21%,

to 17 miles per hour. the wind will diminish, no measurable wind at all in the early morning hours, but bouncing back in the afternoon. now to the county fire, where it's 90 degrees, relative humidity only 23%. the wind will remain quite strong in this region through the overnight hours into the early morning hours at around 20 miles per hour. more broadly across the bay area, gusts up to 20 miles per hour or higher in many bay locations. it will get cooler in the immediate bay area tomorrow, but in the inland areas it may stay rather warm. forecast in just a few minutes. southern colorado, fighters theieve it may take tontain tsfi. alrdy charred more than 120 square miles and destroyed more than 100 homes.

crews on the ground say powerful winds are making their job harder. some embers have blown and started fires from a mile away. thousands of people have honored a southern california firefighters murdered while trying to save the lives of others. very moving scene, as you can tell. other firefighters and first responders marched into this morning's memorial service for fire captain dave rosa. he died after being shot while responding to an explosion at a nursing home. police believe one of the home's residents shot rosa and a a a fi -- he leaves behind his wife and two sons. an arrest in the murder of a security guard, rolandot:3da

rning.pocear heen into custody before 1:00 this morning near the crime scene. police have not released details on a motive or what led up to the shooting. san francisco 49ers linebacker reuben foster has been suspended for the first two games of the season. that stems from a weapons charge and misdemeanor drug offense earlier this year. he was also facing domestic violence, remember, but was cleared after his accuser admitted to making a false report. so those charges were dropped. foster can still participate in all pre-season practices and games. the white house says rescinded federal guidelines that encourage schools and universities to consider race in the admissions process. the trump administration today ended obama-era guidance that encouraged schools to take a student's race into account to promote diversity in admissions. the shift suggests schools will have the federal government's blessing to leave race out of admissions and enrollment decisions. california public universities

dumbarton. counties. the teenager declared brain dead in california in 201 c following complications from surgery, and a life or death battle ensued between the family, the hospital and the state. >> today they spoke out after she passed away fol wick a recent surgery. melanie is live in the newsroom for us. >> dion and dan, some concern today about whether or not jahi could be buried on friday as planned. during today's press conference that concern seemed to be eliminated. the alameda coroner's office stated it does not have a hold on her body. her mother said he never passed away in 2013.

she described her growing into a young woman over the last four plus years and communicating through hand movements. the family thanked the state of new jersey, where they ultimately moved her for allowing them to keep her on life support, based on religious beliefs, something they were not able to do in california. they described the perils of having to use a generator during east coast blizzards. after the recent surgery in june, her heart stopped and she coded. it was then that the family says she actually passed away. >> i'm really going to like miss her. i miss her already because i gave her everything, and i have no regrets, not one. the only regret i ever had was bringing her to the hospital to get her tonsils removed. that's the only regret i'll ever have. everything i did, selling my house, to quitting my job, to

moving across the country, giving up all the time i gave up with my family, it was all worth it. >> her funeral is friday in oakland. it will be open to the public. she will be buried in hayward. her mother says that she wants to become an advocate for other families, and that she also wants to help pass legislation so that no other family will ever have to endure what she did. in the newsroom, melanie wood row, abc 7 news. now, taking a look back, this all began in december of 2013 at ucsf children's hospital in oakland. she went into cardiac arrest after complications from nose and throat surgery. that very same month doctors declared her brain dead. her family battled the hospital's findings. her family moved her to a hospital in new jersey, the only state where brain death can be rejected on religious grounds. nearly five years after

california declared her deceased, the state of new jersey last month issued her a second death certificate following her death from liver failure. >> dozens of activists are vowing to stay at the immigrations services bureau until they get what they want, the abolishment of i.c.e. and an end to family separation at the border. protesters have been camping out all day and all night. in the latest demonstration against trump's zero tolerance policy. >> reporter: the protest is growing, more tents set up here, food and drinks and a message, abolish i.c.e., or we're not leaving. the gates to the u.s. immigration and customs enforcement building on washington street and san francisco is blocked. these protesters arrived yesterday for a rally, and have not left. in fact, they say they're staying here until their demands are met. >> we're calling for an end to deportations and the abolition of i.c.e., which is an organization that's cruel and

inhumane, that oppresses migrant communities, which has only existed since 2003. we want these things to stop that are being done in our names. >> entrances on jackson street are also blocked. buckets across the driveway say abolish i.c.e. police keep watch from a distance. officers are making sure everything remains peaceful while providing traffic control for the lane that is blocked. protesters say they were inspired by others fighting to end family detention at the border. >> we're all angry, we all feel that what's happening is immoral and outrageous. we've been inspired by what other folks have done. we wanted to make a similar stand. >> i.c.e. released a statement to me about an hour ago, u.s. immigration and customs enforcement fully respects the rights of all people to voice their opinion without interference. i.c.e. remains committed to immigration enforcement consistent with federal law and agency policy. in san francisco, matt keller, abc 7 news. walmart is taking heat for a

line of anti-trump t-shirts sold on its website. a call to bring down the 45th president. the shirts come in several shades, even frisbees. there was a furious response from trump supporters who took to twitter with a call to boycott the world's biggest retailer. as the news spread, the listings were taken off the walmart website. the retailer still says make america great again and donald trump speaks for me apparel. if you think there's a chance oprah will run for president, it's time to give up on that. in an interview with a british vogue, oprah says she could not stomach a presidential run with all the nontruths, nastiness and back handedness in politics. she says the campaign would kill her. she appears on the cover of british vogue hitting stands this friday. politics is a rough business.

live, this is abc 7 news. here are the stories making headlines today at 4:30. the two men charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter in the ghost ship fire agreed to a plea deal just hours ago. derick almena will be sentenced to nine years in prison while max harris will be sentenced to six years. they likely won't serve their whole sentences due to time served and good behavior. crews fighting the county fire in yolo and napa counties are being helped by cooler temperatures and higher

humidity. the fire is 5% contained. first lady continue to get 12 young boys and their soccer coach safely out of a flooded cave in thailand. the team was found alive yesterday ten days after they went missing. abc news rep rep rep rep rep rep joins us now. >> reporter: the boys have been fed and checked out by medics. officials say as long as they are in a safe place and in good hands, they will not be rushed out of the cave. for these 12 boys and their soccer coach in thailand, the ten-day ordeal of being lost deep inside this flooded cave over. the focus now shifting to safely getting them out. >> many people are coming, many, many people. we are the first. many people come. >> divers promising more help is

yesterday. abc 7 news was in oakland while flags there flew at half staff at the courthouse. investigators in florida want to find out if a woman is okay after surveillance captured her falling from an suv. it passed through an intersection in tampa. it appears she may have been unconscious after hitting the pavement yesterday, someone jumped out of the suv, scooped her up, put her back inside the car. sheriff's deputies later found the suv at a gas station, questioning the car's owner and two other people. get ready to celebrate the 4th. >> don't get carried away, a holiday warning from the chp, maximum enforcement patrol set to begin in just hours. some of the smoke from the fires up north is being carried away by friendly wind. but it's also bringing us a cool 4th of july. i'll have the accuweather forecast coming up. as we head to break, take a live look outside in the south

francisco have increased efforts to get to zero new hiv infections by 2020. the preventative drug commonly known as prep is part of that strategy. the company is under fire for increasing its price by 45%. leanne melendez has the story. the company that makes the preventative drug says it reduces the risk of hiv by 99%. it's been a game changer in san francisco's efforts to reduce new infections. >> this is a major tool. this is one of the two or three major elements to getting to zero. but we can't get people there if it costs $2,000 a month. it's just not affordable. >> reporter: the company has increased the price by 45% since it came out six years ago as a preventative drug. lucas hanson's partner is on the medication. >> it's one of those things certainly people should be entitled to as a matter of
