a group of quick-thinking a group of quick-thinking commuters in boston being hailed as heroes this morning for what they did that may have saved one woman's life. >> her leg got stuck between the train and the platform during rush hour. and everyone jumped into action and followed a man's interesting instructions. here's tom llamas. >> reporter: it was just after 5:30 p.m., rush hour. a train pulls into the mass avenue train station in boston. doors open and passengers start to get out. a woman falls, her leg trapped between the train car and the platform. a small group of fellow commuters jump into action. >> i saw a man just running full speed across the platform. and he was yelling for someone to call, you know, 911 or call

>> she must use sunblock. interesting story coming out from the trump administration with a major shift about affirmative action. the president trump administration is rescinding the obama-era policy about promoting diversity in schools. >> they will encourage schools to leave race out of admissions and enrollment saying the old directives went beyond the constitution. harvard is facing a lawsuit and says it will continue to consider race to create a diverse campus. the lawsuit alleges that it discriminates against asian students. >> you can imagine the outcry that will come from that ruling. in the meantime, it may play a role in the battle of replacing the supreme court justice. >> president trump has interviewed seven candidates.

it was carrying ten american tourists. a mother from tennessee was celebrating her anniversary. she was killed in that explosion and a young dancer from vermont lost both of her legs. passengers from another boat jumped into the water to help the victims. there was little warning something was wrong. >> it sounded like almost like a shotgun went off three minutes into the ride is when the right side of the boat exploded. almost as if we were hit with a torpedo. >> they used pieces of wood to get the most seriously-injured victims to shore. the dancer who lost her legs is in a medically-induced coma. the faa is responding to a lawsuit demanding action on the ever-shrinking airline seats. a passenger rights group is demanding that a regulation be placed on seat size.

but the agency is refusing. it says evacuation tests show there is enough room for passengers and crew to quickly maneuver in an emergency and the faa says we're a safety agency, not a creature comfort agency. >> what about when your legs go numb because you're crammed into that seat and you can't get out in an emergency because you're all pins and needles. what about that? >> that was not part of the lawsuit. >> no? >> no. >> they should have included that. we need a better lawyer. a michigan mother terrified that she might lose her son nearly lost her job thanks to a less than sympathetic boss. >> he has been on life support since thursday. when she learned about his condition, she texted her boss to say she couldn't cover the next shift. her boss' response was this isn't how we do things, so i accept that you're quitting. >> whoa. >> she took a screen shot of the stunning exchange and posted it on facebook.

with nearly 40 million americans hitting the road, the secret service has a warning. >> a device hidden inside the pump. pierre thom at has more. >> reporter: watch here, and just like that, they have installed a device called a skimmer. customers would never know it's there, but a skimmer is capable of siphoning off credit information and sending it wirelessly to fraudsters. >> thousands every day. >> reporter: the criminals can use the information to produce thousands of counterfeit credit cards. authorities say they've seen a recent surge in this type of fraud. this past weekend, the secret service fanned out across the nation at more than 85 locations in 21 states, hunting for skimmers. since may in just two

this morning on "world news now," the dangerous heat gripping most of the country this fourth of july, from coast-to-coast. >> the record temperatures and dry conditions are fueling historic wildfires in the west. at least 42 fires are burning in ten states. the major concern today and just how dangerous those conditions will get. the trump administration rolling back a policy that encouraged affirmative action. the reasoning and the reaction. a mystery in florida this morning as a woman is seen falling out of a moving suv at an intersection. hear what a family member and the police are now saying. and it could have been a misconnection, but two airline passengers may have just found

the so-called heat index is expected to hit 101 in minneapolis-st. paul and 1 >> meanwhile, the hot and dry weather in the southwest is fueling several major wildfires that has destroyed hundreds of homes. one of the biggest is near the new mexico border. clayton sandell is there. >> reporter: the u.s. is baking and burning. in southern colorado, the spring fire at 80,000 acres. this cabin one of more than 100 homes destroyed. >> it looked like hiroshima had another a-bomb dropped on it. >> reporter: officials say it was sparked by an illegal campfire. heat and winds are super charging 42 wildfires including this one in northern california. extreme heat in d.c. and boston where they're practicing for fourth of july festivities and bringing in huge fans to cool the crowds.

it's mid afternoon in northern thailand where the desperate effort to rescue 12 boys trapped inside a flooded cave doesn't appear close to concluding anytime soon. new video shows the boys wrapped in mylar blankets. several are seen smiling, laughing. they've been trapped for some 12 days. the boys have been joined by seven divers, including a doctor and nurse. the officials say the boys will not be brought out of the cave until it's safe and heavy rain is expected later this week. there are concerns it could take several weeks if not months to get them out of there. and staying in the region, at least a dozen people are dead and dozens missing after this ferry sank just 200 yards off the coast of indonesia. you see the ship there suffered engine damage and ran aground. dozens of passengers tried to hang onto the side of the ferry boat as it listed, tossing people and vehicles into the water. there are reports that there were just not enough life jackets for the 139 people on board.

schools skilled in mimicking a drowning. i observed some parents checking the water, but mostly, they're focused on their assignments and the party. and after 30 minutes, our swim instructor, kelly, begins simulating a drowning, struggling to keep her head above water, and just like the real thing barely makes a sound. more than a minute goes by. she's still struggling and nobody's looking. we're looking at two and a half minutes and nobody notices a thing. after more than four minutes, she simulates a worse-case scenario and stops moving. remember she's a trained professional and is just acting. josh from the red cross is with us. no parents notice anything. is that surprising?

missing boys and their soccer coach have been found alive with more rainfall forecast this week, the real test will be getting them out safely. this new video showing the boys wrapped in mylar blankets after eating a meal, grateful for their rescuers. the boys 11 to 16 are rail thin. the thai navy saying a team of seven s.e.a.l.s. are with them, including a doctor and nurse. they've all been evaluated and are in good condition. these are the kinds of military rations that divers are swimming into the cave to give the boys, things that are protein rich, full of nutrients to build up their strength but also that they can swallow, because they've been so long without food. none of the options is easy. one plan, teaching the boys who may not know how to swim to scuba dive. workers fitting a mask on this boy, possibly testing equipment they would use in a water rescue. and here's what they face.

here's becky worley. wn upf clhing was ain intruc iwas a breakthroughlem. those early shirts were hot. but fast forward to 2018 and old school rash guard, no more. new technology added chemicals like zinc oxide. but how cool? >> let's get hot. >> reporter: we tried different colors and designs and fabrics with the upf rating of 40 or above. for each one i lay out for about ten minutes in the sun and cool down between shirts. we compared all the shirts, including this plain cotton shirt and it was definitely the hottest. i feel like i'm in a sauna right now. when we start in with the sun shirts, the temperature

variations are extreme. this one close to the cotton at around 105 degrees. definitely sweating, can you tell? this one, significantly cooler at 88 degrees. much more room for air to get in here. and this sassy shirt was even vented in the back. breezy back there. even after a run, about 93 degrees, not bad. but the hands-down, coolest shirt was this white, super light technical shirt. it's remarkable how much cooler this shirt is. >> about 83 degrees. >> reporter: it was five degrees cooler than the next coolest shirt. using my shorts as a control, the sun shirt 42 degrees cooler. while all these shirts will protect you from the sun, there are vast differences in how they protect you from the heat.
