dell casillo is live to explain. >> reporter: if you're one of the thousands expected to pack discovery meadow tonight, we have some good news, there will be no flights impacting your fireworks show. that's because the san jose airport will briefly shut down its two runways between 9:30 and 10:00 tonight. that means for the first time no airplanes will be taking off or landing in the half-hour of the show. an airport spokeswoman says it was decided this was the right course of action after the faa raised safety concerns. we're told this small shutdown will likely impact three commercial flights, taxis and terminals will remain open. minimal impact. it's important for us to be able to offer this to our community and under the leadership of our mayor we're really pleased that this is the case and that everybody can enjoy the fireworks safely. and enjoy a community event. >> reporter: and one thing many don't enjoy, though, street and

highway closures. now, for those in san jose, there are quite a few. including highway 87. parts of the highway, i should say. closures will happen on northbound these closures will be in effect at 6:00 to 11:00 tonight. we have reached out to chp to ask about any additional highway closures. we'll be sure to update you when that information comes through. for now, reporting live at the airport, amanda dell casillo, abc 7 news. abc 7 was at the pier 39 where a crowd is growing for tonight's fourth of july fireworks joe. crews are wrapping up loaded barges with 10,000 fireworks ready to burst in the sky over the sea. >> one will get positioned at pier 39 and the other will go down to aquatic park and get positioned there. >> san francisco police will have extra officers on patrol

tonight, including pain clothes officers looking for things like this, illegal fireworks. the legal fireworks show starts around 9:30 and is expected to [ laughter ] about a half hour. >> but the magic question is will you be able to see the fireworks? san francisco? >> let's take a live look outside from our abc 7 roof cam. where things appear to be nice and blue and clear. how long will it stay like this? that's the question. >> dion, looking in that direction, skies will stay clear a long time. but the other direction, a different picture. let's take a look at what we expect conditions to be later in the evening. starting at 6:00 this evening, notice on the forecast animation on the fog it gets deep skper -- and thicker along the coastline. it may be a thin finger of fog at first, but by 9:30 when the fireworks begin, it looks like we may have more fog developing. here's how we are looking at

conditions right now. clear skies in the south bay and the east bay at 9:30 tonight for fireworks displays away from san francisco. but here in the city it looks like our view of the fireworks could be at least partially obscured, cool and breezy everywhere. we're hoping that that fog will be very thin and will not obscure the view of the fireworks here in san francisco. we'll keep monitoring it, just about minute by minute. eric? >> all right, spencer, thank you very much. while people might enjoy the fireworks, for animals it can be a rough night. some human guardians, though, are seeking out alternative methods to keep their dog safe. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is live in oakland hills with more on this for us. laura? >> reportr: well, hi, eric. we are here at the dog park. and while fireworks can be a reon to party, a way to celebrate for us humans, for animals like linus here, a night like tonight can be especially

traumatic. the fourth of july is anything but fun for corina, the 5-year-old german shepherd lives in oakland hills. >> we're a little worried about tonight. >> reporter: in a neighborhood that traditionally rocks on this holiday thanks to all the fireworks, legal and otherwise, expected after dark. >> freaks, just wants to dig a hole in a corner. she's panting. she's running around. she wants to hide. it's sad. >> reporter: that's why marta parker will dry something different, for the first time this fourth of july, a mild tra tranquilizer. >> dr. eric bron says it's not for everyone. but some dog owners are asking for a prescription for the fourth. >> they're calling for their favorite sed datiative for thei,

takes effect in about an hour and a half, lasts for about four hours. >> reporter: the fourth of july is all about good fun, but the dog owners will keep a close eye on them just in case. >> my dog is probably going to start whining and probably going to maybe run the closest to the door, or mom. >> it's the first fourth of july that we are having together. i don't know how he's going to react. it's oakland, so there's kind of always like firecrackers and stuff going off. >> reporter: and we're back live here at the dog park. now, short of a tranquilizer, some of the folks here told us the best way they get their dogs ready for the fireworks tonight is with a lot of exercise here. the other advice from the doctor is to have the dog inside a room perhaps with some distracting music, or a fan. live in oakland, laura anthony,

abc 7 news. get your dogs tuckered out, laura, thank you. fireworks are also a concern for firefighters battling the county fire. cal fire sent out this tweet today saying happy independence from the county fire fire line. be safe this fourth of july. abc 7 news reporter wayne friedman is live in winters with more on this story. hey, wayne. >> reporter: we had an aerial battle in a community not far where people should have evacuated. they were told to evacuate. they stayed. instead they all gathered in the corner store. as the poster on the window at the corner store reads they planned a tiny fourth of july parade in guinda today. what they got instead turned out to be larger and certainly more urgent. >> now we have a different kind of parade, fire engines and resources. >> reporter: the northern most advancing line of county fire, an impressive show of force and aerial skills when the smoke cleared up. this assault by helicopters on

the latest hot spot played out on the extreme margin of accessibility. >> they are getting as close as they can to the fire. but if it's really, really smokey, they're not going to go in there any farther. >> with the plaz burning in steep, almost inaccessible terrain, cal fire took advantage of a break in the weather. this battle happened two miles north of guinda. the flames briefly threatened the town. few people, if any, evacuated. >> unless the engine is parked on our property and says there's the flames you need to get out now, i'm going to stay so i can take care of all the animals. >> i've never seen a fire like this. >> or a battle like it. chopper after chopper dipping into cache creek for water and then returning to the flames, making drops and all in that thick blanket of smoke in the almost 150 years of guinda it's a july 4th unlike any other, unforgettable for all the scary reasons. >> but it could be worse. you know, i count my blessings.

it could be worse. >> reporter: and they know it could be worse, as of tonight, cal fire says guinda is not in jeopardy. they think it's going to be all right. but they're keeping an eye on this fire. they're worried about smoke. they're worried about flames. they're worried about heat. they're worried about dryness. in other words, they're going to be worried until this fire is out. live in yolo county, wayne friedman, abc 7 news. now, the pawnee fire in lake county is 90% contained tonight. 15,000 acres have burned. officials expect full containment this weekend, 22 structures have been destroyed by the fire. the sister of a security guard sho and killed is thanking san francisco police after they arrested a suspect less than 24 hours after the crime. she spoke with abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow who's in our newsroom with the latest. melanie? 61-year-old rolando romero would have celebrated his

wedding anniversary tomorrow. he was face timing with his wife in the philippines when he was shot. >> she still can't believe her baby brother is gone. >> i'm sad, it's murder. >> around 5:20 monday morning the security guard was face timing his wife from his job at fitzgerald avenue when his sister says he realized something was very wrong. >> my brother said, oh, i'm going to hang up. i think i've been shot. i'm going to call 911. >> san francisco police say romero passed away at the hospital, less than 24 hours later. officers took 24-year-old cardell coleman into custody on the same street where someone shot romero. police booked coleman on homicide. >> i am so grateful to these people, to all the police of san francisco, this is what i want, justice. >> her brother was working in the united states so he could support his family in the

philippines. >> this man, i hope he do have a conscience, you know, to think that he -- the one he killed is a person not to have that kind of death. he doesn't deserve that. >> romero cruz says her brother was not armed. she has one question for coleman. >> why my brother, why? >> with both their parents gone, she says it had been just the two of them. she never imagined her younger sibling would pass first. >> if you have a brother or a sister, hug them, kiss them, while you can. lynn romero is trying to raise money. the family has set up a gofundme page. well, the fourth of july i s normally a very busy day at the

statue of liberty. but today visitors were forced to evacuate after a woman climbs onto the monument. how long before police were able to take her into custody? and it's one of those popular fourth of july parades in the bay area, the big turnout in novato this morning. speaking of big turnouts, beaches are very busy today. a live look at santa cruz, more on festivities

police arrested a woman who climbed onto the statue of liberty. she spent four hours there. the woman wearing a t-shirt from the group called rise and resist. that group has called for abolishing i.c.e., and earlier today u.s. parks police arrested six other people after an abolish i.c.e. banner was hung

from the statue's pedestal. >> dozens of people are camping for a third row demonstrating outside of the financial district. >> tents line the sidewalks in a what protesters call a block party demanding that i.c.e. be abolished. the protests are in response to migrant families being detained. some groups are calling for the elimination of all borders. >> what if we create areas of mutual aid where people can come together and build communities and kind of sustain the damages that capitalism has done to our communities. >> activists also believe their protest is preventing the court from functioning. >> the presence of protesters outside doesn't stop it. we have a lot of protesters, but we continue operating normally. >> the i.c.e. building will reopen torrow. it is closed today for the fourth of july holiday. hundreds of people line the streets in novato to celebrate the fourth of july with a large

parade. families began arriving to claim a spot, boasting more than 100 entries, including floats, classic cars. many parade goers say it's the small town feel that makes the parade special. >> i grew up here, knowing a lot of people, seeing a lot of people i know. and, you know, just a good community we have here in novato. >> i really like how like fun and exciting it is. >> what's your favorite part? >> i like getting candy. >> simple. the parade route only covers a few blocks of the city's oldtown district, but with so many entries, the fun lasted well past noon. >> well, the old-fashioned fourth of july parade got under way in half moon bay at noon. main street was transformed as the homespun parade celebrated small town america. half moon bay's sitting marching band entertained the crowd with patriotic ballad

>> the square dancing club took part of the lark spur fourth of july parade, this video was tweeted. the parade got under way at 10:30 this morning. festivities continued with food, entertainment, arts and crafts at the town park. as you can imagine, some people are celebrating america's birthday by hitting the beach. thousands have gone to santa cruz to show off their patriotism. carlos saucedo is there live. excellent assignment today. >> reporter: what a tough assignment to be on, dion. a beautiful day in santa cruz. things were overcast earlier this morning. it cleared up around nontime. and since then, we saw more families and people show up here to the beach. but because of the heavier crowds you can expect to see a lot more officers on hand to make sure that everyone stays safe and follows the rules. >> yeah.

barbecuing at the beach with the red, white and blue. >> i wanted to come festive looking, so, yeah, i found everything i need at walmart. >> reporter: it doesn't get anymore america -- >> we got chicken and ribs and shrimp. >> the essentials for a patriotic feast on this fourth of july, a special day for all americans. >> this is what we all have sacrificed for. i bring my family down here every year. i just fell in love with this atmosphere. >> reporter: thousands of people crowded the beach looking for some fun under the sun. >> a little more crowded than i anticipated. i wasn't sure what to expect. >> those looking for high waves, today wasn't the day. >> we came in after low tied, the waves weren't that big, but it was fun. >> it was relaxing. there weren't waves, we could

hang out in the water and talk. >> what is noticeable, the stepped up police presence, officers are on maximum enforcement, reminding visitors that alcohol and fireworks are not allowed on the beach. >> everybody had a good time and be safe. with that, a lot of people come here and don't know our local laws and ordinances. >> reporter: and it is a full house along the beach. you can see all the crowds right now. beautiful day again. and no fireworks, no alcohol, no glass. just as a reminder for people who are coming out to enjoy just themselves out here with their families and so far no problems that we've heard about. but if you are going to be coming out, make sure to bring that sunscreen. reporting live in santa cruz, carlos saucedo, abc 7 news. now, a lot of people on the east coast and in the midwest also spent the day at the beach. the region is in the middle of a heat wave. it was in the low 90s in chicago today. as you can see there, lots of pople cooled off in lake

michigan. >> announcer: now your accuweather forecast with spencer christian. we're still waiting to see who wins the battle, the fog or the fireworks. live look at doppler 7, mostly clear skies over the inland aeas right now, and partly to mostly sunny over the bay. but low clouds and fog are building along the coastline. and they threaten a bit to obscure our view of the fireworks display in san francisco. it's breezy to windy right now across most of the area. right around the bay, we have wind speeds of 12 to 16 miles per hour. pretty breezy. this is the view from our south beach camera in downtown san francisco showing the fog rolling in over -- and our current temperature readings are 63 degrees in san francisco, oakland 66, 76 at mountain view. san jose 79, gilroy 73, 61 at half moon bay. this is the foggy view itself as the fog begins to roll over the city and partially over the bay.

69 degrees at santa rosa and napa, 73 at novato, fairfield and concord in the low 70s, 75 at livermore. here's the view that counts most, looking toward the golden gate. the fog may obscure our view of the fireworks. forecast features, fog begins near the coast and bay tonight. a streak of warmer days ahead beginning tomorrow, and that will continue through the weekend. mild coastal conditions, and hot inland for the weekend. here's how things will look at about 6:00 p.m. we'll have lots of fog at the coast. the marine layer will be getting deeper. as we animate the forecast, the fog forecast animation, you can see it will be pushing locally out across the bay between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. around 9:30 when the fireworks begin, this is what we expect to be the case, fog getting sort of dense and thick in parts of marin county around the golden gate, out over the bay a little bit. so it's still very iffy if we

see the fireworks clear over the city. brightly illuminated clouds. overnight, marine layer will push in. tomorrow, mainly sunny day. breaks in the fog. it will be breezy again tomorrow and it will start warming up. high temperatures low to mid-60s at the coast, to mid and upper sechbs at the bay. and mid to upper 80s in the warmest inland locations. a beach hazard advisory in effect from tonight through saturday afternoon, wave heights are growing. so we've got rough surf here. there's a possibility of dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves. wave heights are above average already and could reach seven feet or higher as they continue to build. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast, warming up a bit tomorrow, highs in the upper 80s inland, low 90s in the inland areas on friday. so the warming continues right on into the weekend, in fact through the weekend, saturday and sunday looked quite warm

inland with highs in the mid to upper 90s. mid-80s around the bay, mid-60s on the coast, and temperatures moderate on monday and further cooling on tuesday and wednesday, once again, the big question, which will arrive first tonight, the fog or the fireworks? the fog is making its push right now. it does tend to break up a bit as it gets out over the bay sometimes. it may not be very thick or dense. if that's the case, we'll have a good view. some people spend their fourth of july shopping. fourth of july shopping. why not all ♪ ♪ ♪ raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens ♪ ♪ bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens ♪ ♪ brown paper packages tied up with strings ♪ ♪ these are a few of my favorite things ♪ ♪ ♪

but there are some sales that are widely advertised that bay area consumers average nine out of ten who shopped for ten months find only two of the chains offer what it calls legitimate sales, costco and bed bath and beyond. other retailers are sometimes misleading. streaming video is getting more expensive. last spring youtube tv raised its price by $5 per month. last week, dish network, sling tv, announced that it was raising the price of its by $35 p5 per month. direct tv now is going up by $5 a month too. there is more competition. you can often choose what you want to watch or not, but this shows you need to keep track. sales up 5% in june compared
