away from the embarcadero. lot had fingers crossed tonight that fog wouldn't crash the party. luckily, it never showed up. july 4th fireworks lit up the waterfront. tens of thousands of spectators got a crystal clear view. >> beautiful, excellent turnout. >> amazing. >> super. >> reporter: some celebrating early, illegal fireworks near the crowds. police closed road blocks. traffic was jammed for blocks and blocks. how long sitting in the car? >> i don't know, fell asleep. >> reporter: some drivers circled for more than an hour.

be bottle rockets and cherry bombs. now escalated to mortars, aerial professional fireworks so dangerous that the state fire marshal won't dispose of them, they use bomb squads to get rid of them. going off endlessly behind us. tough to turn a corner in the county without running into or driving next to illegal fireworks. the fire protection district says once the sun sets on the fourth, get hundreds of emergency calls. east county, antioch, pittsburg and bay point. >> on top of property loss probably see injury, a house catch fire because aerial fireworks. it doesn't have to be. >> reporter: can be extremely dangerous and costly. illegal fireworks started thez fires in brentwood and antioch

going off. temperatures in the mid-50s. going to be tough getting out of san francisco tonight. all backed up. heavy traffic coming in before the fireworks, and going out after. i think i'll sleep at the station tonight. meanwhile, fog will expand in overnight hours and probably produce low visibility in the morning for commuters but after that, sunshine. i'll show you more coming up. 1,500 structures in the line of fire tonight as county wildfire continues to rage. spread north. can see the charred area in red, covering parts of napa and y y y county. stretch of highway 28 still closed. 134 square miles burned, 27%

contained. full containment expected tuesday. pawnee fire in lake county is 90% contained. 15,000 acres burned, 22 structures destroyed. full containment this weekend. developing news in san jose, firefighters kept busy battling a grass fire west of 1st street, broke out after 9:30. knocked it down 45 minutes later. no word yet if fireworks were involved in the fire. >> fourth of july drone show at travis air force base have been postponed until tomorrow because of high winds. only for department of defense card holders and families but drones can be seen up to three miles away. like to see how you celebrated independence day. post pictures using #abc7now, could see pictures on air or online. man from san leandro faces

back now to breaking news in san jose. firefighters kept busy battling this grass fire west of 1st street. broke out after 9:30 this evening. firefighters knocked it down 45 minutes later. no word if fireworks were to blame for that. millions celebrated the birth of our nation, protester climbed on the base of the statue of liberty, forcing evacuation of the visitors. maggie rulli with more. >> reporter: skies above new york city lit up in celebration. more than 1 million people mac

fireworks spectacular. but earlier in the day, a different kind of spectacle, nypd involved in hours' long standoff with a woman who climbed on the statue of liberty, protesting president trump's immigration policy. seven protesters were issued summons for dropping a banner that read abolish i.c.e. acknowledging she was one of them but actions not part of the planned protest. >> would love to talk about the issue, not the action. >> ropes and climbing gear, reaching her, attaching harness, taking her into custody. >> happy fourth of july to everybody. >> amid the political protests president hosted a picnic for military families at the white house. abc news, new york.
