good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> and i'm zachary kiesch in for kendis gibson. new footage as a soccer team is trapped inside a cave in thailand, meanwhile, the rescue could take days instead of weeks. dozens of wildfires are burning across the west. texas is bracing for more torrential rains and flash flooding. president trump celebrated the fourth of july with military families at the white house. he hosted a picnic and thanked them for their sacrifice, and thousands of others were invited to watch the fireworks from the south lawn. and joey chestnut has won his 11th title at the hot dog

eating contest, downing a record 74 hot dogs and buns in just ten minutes. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, july 5th. from abc news, this is "world news now." hungry, any one? >> no. >> after watching that video, definitely not. >> can't do it. >> congratulations to joey chestnut, nonetheless. but we're going to start this half hour off with the desperate effort to save a soccer team and their coach. >> we see the pictures of the group looking happy and waving hello but still trapped in a cave. >> authorities were trying to wait until the water recedes, but that could take a while. james longman is there. >> reporter: one at a time, the trapped boys introduce themselves to the world. and send a message. my health is good, they all say. this young boy making sure he gets his turn.

hey, me too, he says, a big smile. it's now their 12th day underground. their parents gathering to watch their children. this mother saying i'm dying to see him. i miss my son. a team of navy s.e.a.l.s., including doctors volunteering to stay with the boys. in this video, we see them huddled under blanket as medics tend to cuts on their feet. this sign, v for victory. but it is not over yet for the boys and their soccer coach, the challenge, keeping them healthy, mentally and physically until rescue crews come up with a way to get them out. you can hear a sll voiceki wt t eat? you see those thai navy s.e.a.l.s. you can see them there with their oxygen tanks. there are hundreds going in and out every day.

they're placing extra oxygen tanks across the route. one possibility, swimming the boys out. it's a perilous trip even for the most experienced divers. there's concern that the boys who don't know how to swim may panic. much of it is under water and over steep rock. the boys have tried on face masks and practiced breathing but haven't trained yet in the water. >> if you don't know how to swim and you're in a very dark environment in a cave, it's not a good environment to learn in. you need to create an environment where they can safely get away. >> reporter: another scenario, keeping the boys in the cave until the rainy season passes, which is up to four months away as they continue to pump out water from those caves. it's been another long, hot day in thailand. they're hoping to get these boys out before the weather turns.

but earlier in the day, a different kind of spectacle. the nypd involved in an hours-long standoff with a woman who climbed on to the statue of liberty protesting president trump's immigration policies. before her climb, seven protestors were issued summons for dropping a banner reading "abolish i.c.e." they say her actions were not part of the planned protest. officers with ropes and climbing gear eventually reaching her, attaching a harness and taking her into custody. >> happy fourth of july to everybody. >> reporter: amid those political protests, the president spent the holiday hosting a picnic for military families at the white house. also in our nation's capital. >> of course we've got the biggest and best fireworks in the land. >> reporter: john stamos returning once again to host the annual the fourth of july concert. maggie rulli, abc news, new york.

a leading candidate for the supreme court is getting some pushback from staunch conservatives on capitol hill. senators rand paul, tom cotton and ted cruz have expressed concerns to president trump that judge brett kavanaugh may not be a reliable conservative vote if he replaces justice kennedy. he is among seven potential candidates president trump has interviewed. antiabortion groups are pushing for amy coney barrett. and we're just hours away from when tariffs against china take effect. they include those vaping devices and light bulbs. president trump has threatened to raise it to $450 billion worth of tariffs if china retaliates with its own tariffs. in oregon, a black lawmaker

says one of her constituents called police on her as she walked through the area she represents. she is running for reelection outside portland. a sheriff's deputy approached her and said someone called police because they thought she was casing the area, up to no good. she eventually spoke to the woman by phone who said she called 911 for the safety of her neighborhood. and for the first time, we're hearing from the survivor of a terrifying parasailing accident. she is out of the hospital and speaking exclusively with abc news. her ordeal was captured on video. you can see her flying uncontrollably through the air for 45 minutes after the parachute broke free. she fractured her skull, broke ribs and had a collapsed lung after the tether broke. >> when i was up there flipping around and stuff, i was able to

firefighters had their hands full in seattle battling a massive warehouse fire. flames ripped through the roof and walls. thick plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles. property damage is extensive. still no word on what caused that fire. the granddaughter of a 92 year old arizona woman accused of killing her son says her grandmother shouldn't be locked up. >> anna may blessing is charged with first degree murder. police say she shot her son because he wanted to move her to an assisted living facility. but her granddaughter says that her father wanted to take away her guns.

we're hearing new details in the real-life hollywood kidnapping case. >> police are facing scrutiny over how they apprehended one of the suspects. linsey davis has more. >> reporter: lapd guns trained at a woman, her hands in the air. >> five guns pointed at this woman. >> reporter: onlookers believed this could be a case of excessive force. but police say the woman arrested in this viral video, amber neal, is part of a group that played a part in a kidnapping. they allegedly entered a home and pistol whipped a man and forced the actors to wear hoods over their heads.

welcome back. we hope you had a happy fourth of july, and for those of you who may have had a little too much fun diane's got something to help you out with a hangover, maybe, pancakes? >> this one is a pancake recipe with a healthy twist. growing up, we had this awesome family tradition where every sunday was pancake day. the only problem with pancake day is it only happened on sundays. so today we're going to make a pancake healthy enough to eat any day of the week. pancake day, baby! we're going to start off by grabbing eggs, we'll need ur egwhes. separating eggs is the most annoying part of this whole recipe, but we're going to make it a little less annoying with this high-tech gadget. yes, that's a water bottle. open the water bottle.

crack in your eggs. try not to drop in the shell. take your water bottle. tilt the bowl a little bit, squeeze and suck the yolk right in. boom! from there, grab your blender, add your egg whites. any banana will do, but this is a good use for an overripe banana like this one, half a cup of oatmeal, half teaspoon of baking powder, two teaspoons of protein powder. i'm using vanilla, but i'm sure chocolate would be delicious. and then you blend. this is the loudest blender.

voila. we've got pancake batter. here's a good make ahead tip. you can put the batter in the fridge and make the pancakes in a day or two. it will settle, but you can add a little milk to thin them out. you want to grease your pan a little bit. because we're using so little, i'm going with butter. just pour. what we're looking for is the bubbles to form. once you see the bubbles, it usually means the pancake's ready to flip. voila, pancakes. the best part is, for a regular pancake, you're looking at about 160 calories, five grams of fat, more than 20 grams of carbs and four grams of sugar.

we hope for the best but prepare for the worst. >> reporter: with more rain in the forecast this week, the real test will be getting them out safely. none of the options are easy. one is to wait for the rainy season to pass. that could take weeks if not months. another option is to teach the boys how to scuba dive. the cave complex is about six miles long. the boys and their coach are here, a half-mile under ground. and a little over one mile from the cave's entrance according to the british diving team who found them. they had to navigate a maze of passageways, a journey that could take the most experienced six hours. this mother saying she can't wait to cook her son his favorite food, a traditional thai omelet. abc spoke with one of the rescuers who described the search as harrowing. he calls this cave dive one of the hardest in the world and says there are maybe only 20

people in the world capable of doing it. and now they want to train these boys. >> that shows you how difficult this mission is. our correspondent on the ground, james longman spoke to an official in charge of communications, they really don't want to get these boys to dive. they are afraid they might panic. it takes a lot of experience to do a dive like this. it sounds like the current plan they're hoping for is to wait for the water to recede to about neck high and put them in life jackets and see if they can float them out of the cave. >> i'm fascinated by this idea that they have gone so far in there with supervision. we have heard reports thathe are making marks on the walls. this is something that is almost tradition. the whole thing is scary. it's one thing that they're found, obviously, it's getting them out safe. >> they built a dam to try to divert more water from going into the cave. a lot of people working on it,
