warmer, but nothing too uncomfortable, by 7:00 around 70 to 79 degrees. when i come back we'll show you some of the warmer temperatures that are rolling in for the weekend. let's get it over to sue here in one second and she's going to tell you about the morning commute. >> yeah. we've got some changes happening today on bart. really a problem as far as no -- i shouldn't say no, but low ridership and that's happening because of the holiday right in the middle of the week. some bart trains will be canceled, some will be rescheduled. just to have a head's up for that and check the schedules and you may be sitting on the platform a little longer than you normally would. all right. we've got the accident out of the call de cot tunnel, partially blocking the left lane and other cars going by it with near misses. i'm not seeing too much slowing past the scene and we do see

some pretty good conditions this holiday light hopefully out of antioch headed westbound on highway 4 into concord with no delays at this hour. now breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> breaking news from oakland, firefighters on rescue mode on hayes street and tweeted this out about 20 minutes ago saying they have a two story building fully involved and then just in the last five minutes want to show you this, a brand new tweet saying that they are going defensive, pulling crews outing of the building, sound likes a dangerous or difficult fire to fight. we do have a news crew on the way and we will let you know as soon as we get there and have an update for you as soon as possible. back to you. >> thank you. and firefighters responded to several grass fires in the south bay. when they got to both scenes, fireworks were still going off nearby. >> one of them was along the guadeloupe river near highway 237 in san jose where we find abc 7 news reporter matt keller. good morning, matt. >> good morning. you can tell what kind of night it was by the trash that is left

behind in the morning. check it out here. right next to the guadeloupe river there's empty beer cans, empty boxes of fireworks and then over here you have a bunch of fireworks that appear to have been used. no surprise when you take a look at this video that we have from last night, you can see the hillside on 237 in the guadeloupe river was burning. firefighters called for a tier 1 response. it looked like it burned about an acre before firefighters put it out. this video is incredible. look at the fireworks going off behind the fire. explosion after explosion. what appears to be a police helicopter with a spotlight shining down. i looked at all the calls and sounds at the fire department that came in after 9:30, 28 different calls reporting fires between then and now. what a wild and busy night for firefighters. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. on that note new this morning, san bruno police arrested more than two dozen police on the fourth of july. a look at the numbers, officers arrested 25 people for illegal

fireworks, they seized 300 pounds of illegal fireworks. the department says in total, it wondsed to more than 170 firework related calls. for what? >> this is video from east oakland where people decided to put on their own show with, again, illegal fireworks. neighbors could see and hear fireworks going off as the sun was going down. this is video from former oakland mayor jean kwan she took it from her deck facing oakland. fireworks going off in every direction. not just oakland where illegal fireworks were concerned. >> people were setting them offer in contra costa >> i think it's not that they don't get the message. i think that they just disregard the law and they do that in a lot of different ways and fireworks is just one of those. i don't have a lot of hope.

>> illegal fireworks are particularly frustrating for firefighters of course because fire season has started so early this summer. turning now to washington, d.c., where president trump is getting close to a decision for who he wants to be the next supreme court justice. however one of his potential nominees is getting pushback from some republican senators. abc news reporter kenneth moton explains. >> reporter: president trump and the first lady celebrating the fourth of july at the white house with military families. today the focus is back on his next pick for the soon-to-be open supreme court seat. >> such an important decision and we're going to give you a great one. >> reporter: the president has met with at least seven possible replacements for retiring justice anthony kennedy. but abc news learned gop senators have taken aim at one of the candidates, federal court of appeals judge brett cavanaugh. as the president searches for a loyal conservative for the high court the man who once said he would take a bullet for trump used the fourth of july to signal his independence. michael cohen, the president's

former long-time personal attorney, who's under federal investigation, scrubbed any mention of trump and the trump organization from his social media. cohen told abc news his first loyalty is his family. as for the president's supreme court pick his decision is expected to be made by the end of the week. kenneth moton, abc news, washington. the ice building in san francisco's financial district will open following a fourth of july protest last night. video that shows tents lining the sidewalks. protesters are demanding i.c.e. be abolished. the protests are in response to migrant families being detained along the u.s./mexico border. some an narcist groups are calling for the elimination of all borders. >> what if we create areas of mutual aid where people could come together and build communities and kind of like sustain the damages that capitalism has done to our communities. >> activists believe their protest is preventing the court from functioning.

>> the presence of protesters outside doesn't stop it. we have a lot of protesters, but we continue operating normally. >> the protesters started camping out on monday. the building was closed yesterday for the holiday. new details about a fire that damaged the library at a school in pleasanton. wilt cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair. investigators in pleasanton are looking into the cause of the fire at the middle school. the east bay times reports a full damage estimate is not available but it will likely cost at least $200,000. the homeless man charged in connection with 17 brush fires in the north bay will be in court today. they happened over a two-day period last month along the santa rosa vehicle trail and west trail. police arrested domingo bautista-bautista on monday. professional beach volleyball coming to san francisco and you can watch it for free. the san francisco open kicks off today on pier 30 and 32 along

the embarcadero. avp beach volleyball posted this photo saying that this event will be a little different than what you would see in southern california with deep sands on the beach. the competition takes place with the scenic bay bridge looming behind. admission is again free. >> never more than 7 minutes away from my accuweather forecast. looks like a fun event. hopefully you get a chance to watch that. temperature wise we'll start in our east bay neighborhoods. pretty much mid 50s until you get to antioch at 57 degrees. our cool spot, pleasanton at 53 and until you go in the hills, about 52. around the bay we have 55 the oakland, san francisco 54, 59 in mountainview and san jose, 50 napa, pacifica about 51. santa cruz, popular as a lot of people have the next couple days offer. beaches it's going to be brighter the farther north you go. okay. so santa cruz you will see a little sunshine but the

peninsula, coast, that's probably going to be where the clouds are most prevalent. out and about with your hiking, exercising, strong sunshine, and if you're on the bay today, no small craft advisory. for the north bay, temperatures start 56 with cloudy conditions. 72 and sunshine at noon. spike around 81 at 4:00. comfortable 70 by 8:00. for the east bay, 59 and clouds but then sunny and 71. we'll hang out in the mid-70s through 6:00 and the high clouds starting to roll in and the colorful sunshine. san francisco, mid 50s at 8:00, only low 60s by 4:00. here's sue. >> we are checking outside headed back to san rafael, southbound 101, the taillights past the north gate mall. last night of the fair at the fair grounds and so traffic this morning is pretty mild. we are thinking a lot of folks have the long week holiday week off. so about a 20 minute driving headed south towards the golden gate bridge out of novato.

we're checking in with walnut creek, southbound 680 on to highway 24 at the limit as well. a problem on 24, coming out of the call de cot. we'll update that in a couple. >> thank you. community members hosting a closing party for a beloved richmond restaurant owner. >> she will be officially be closing her restaurant tomorrow. the waterfront restaurant has been open for 25 years. it is known for its charitable activities and shutting down after a number of hardships including a landlord/tenant dispute. today and tomorrow the owner will offer free meals in exchange for a donations. the money will benefit the 40 employees left without a job after the > amazon might be closer to announcing a go store. it's opening a second seattle location this fall. the second cashier-less store will be about a mile away from the first one. this one expected to be bigger. in may, amazon announced plans

minutes away from your accuweather forecast. >> this is "abc 7 mornings." >> a live look at walnut creek this morning and here's a look at our temperatures this afternoon. we're going to rebound just a couple degrees in san jose, oakland, mib, look at north bay and the east bay, 10 to 15 degrees warmer today. this is just the beginning. wait until you see the numbers in my accuweather seven-day forecast. >> so the streets are flooded, no problem. the wheels kept turning on a public bus in houston, despite a street being covered in water. you can even see water getting in through the door. judging by the video, people were still expecting to be picked up yesterday. and the driver did just that. >> rescuers in thailand are racing to pump water out of a cave where 13 people are trapped. more rain is expected this weekend. it could push the water level up and flood the ledge where the 12

boys and their soccer coach have taken refuge. rescuers are trying to team them to use scuba gear to get through the tunnels. white take hours to do so. also an effort to install an internet cable in the cave so parents can speak to their children. a san diego woman involved in the freak parasailing accident in mexico is talking about the terrifying ordeal for the first time. >> nearly a month after it happened, katie malone has been released from the hospital. geo ben knee tas has your "gma" first look. >> reporter: in the "gma" first look the survivor of the heart-stopping parasailing accident captured on tape. 29-year-old kate malone is out of the hospital. >> happy to be out and just get back to everyday life and move forward. >> reporter: and speaking out for the first time exclusively with abc news about that terrifying experience. >> when i was up there flipping around and stuff i was able to hold myself and carry my weight and brace myself. >> reporter: you can see malone

okay. we'll give it to them. another california school at four, cal tech in pasadena and five to oxford university, in england. cal at number 27 and ucla number 32. a spectacular fireworks show above the national mall in washington, d.c. that is gorgeous. hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed the aerial display while, of course, listening to patriotic music. there's going to be a second attempt for the fourth of july drone show supposed to take place at travis air force base. >> high winds forced officials to postpone the show last night. intel shared this video ahead of the holiday. shows will feature 500 drones when it happens. it's only for department of defense cardholders and their families. apparently the drones may be able to be seen three miles away. the show set to happen at 9:00 tonight. it's a lovely idea except for when the wind gets in the way.

>> kaurm conditions tonight? >> i think so. the winds will calm around 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, but by the time the sun is down today will be better. >> good. >> for them. they should be able to get it in. >> nice. >> it will be awesome. hi, everybody. never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. 5:18 in about eight seconds. san rafael where it's about 51 degrees under increasing clouds. we're going to have warmer conditions today everywhere, mostly sunny, and it will be mostly cloudy tonight, cool to mild once again, no surprise there. summer heat especially inland is coming in. my extended forecast which does include the weekend. today in san francisco, cloudy and 56, sunshine away from the coast, that's where the fastest breezes are and where the coolest temperatures are. sunset 62, we've got mid to upper 60s in many neighborhoods as you get closer to the bay. let's head towards the east bay, waking up mostly cloudy about 58 this morning. we'll see temperatures in the mid 70s throughout the afternoon hours. dropping down to about 68 at 7:00. back to the peninsula, pretty

cloudy, 57, temperatures warm with the sunshine. look at these low 70s to about 80 degrees. but only low to mid 60s along the coast. down in the south bay today, temperatures are going to hang out in the 74 to 80 degree range from noon to 4:00 and may get up near the 90s in morgan hill and gilroy. as we head towards the north bay about 53 and cloudy conditions and then you can see temperatures in the low to mid 80s and our last stop will be our inland neighborhoods where we've got 56 in the morning and then look at these 80s in the afternoon hours. my accuweather seven-day forecast keeps getting warmer through saturday and then back to average by wednesday. sue? >> let's take a look at your san jose drive if your travels take you on 101 in the northbound direction headlights right under 880 the overcrossing, in san jose there you have a first look at it it is moving nicely this morning. no problems. and what we hope is holiday light coming across the golden

gate bridge, four lanes southbound, two lanes northbound and traffic is looking good across the waldo, a little fog this morning when i came across and it's not enough to really slow you down at all. we do have this accident coming out of the caldecott tunnel, blocking the left lane before highway 13. still partially blocking and i'm not seeing a lot of slow traffic in the area but they are en route to clear that out of there. take care if you're coming westbound. >> thank you. perhaps sensing a void with the closure of toys "r" us amazon planning to send out a holiday toy catalog this year. bloomberg reports the retailer will mail them to homes and hand them out at the whole foods stores they own. amazon brought the grocery store last year. no word exactly when the catalogs would be coming out. and new california law is going to make it easier for people to cancel subscriptions over the internet. >> and this covers any business that makes an automatic renewal service offer. that means it covers newspapers,

magazines, streams services and more and here's the best part. if you make that subscription on-line, the law requires companies to allow you to cancel it on-line too. that makes sense but sometimes they force you to call a customer service hotline. no more. if you sign four something at a promotional or discounted price valid for a certain length of time the company has to get your consent before charging you the normal rate. >> step in the right direction. >> it's a big change. >> yeah. the free messaging platform what's app is offering $50,000 grants to social scientists for the ways to create ways to stop misinformation known as fake news. the move in the wake of a string of lynchings in india from fake news rumors. innocent people have been killed by mobs fed by whatsapp rumors of child kidnappers or organ harvesting rings. the forwarding of fake news is a rising problem in india where more than 200 million users send billions of messages every day on whatsapp.

not going to believe the costly mistake made by the u.s. postal service. take a look at this. these are two images of the statute of liberty. the real one is on the right. obviously, right. the one on the left is the one from the hotel in las vegas, new york, new york. apparently the usps put an image of the las vegas statute of liberty on the stamp instead of the actual statute of liberty. so the sculpture creator for the las vegas statute sued for copyright infringement and is now going to get a payout of $3.5 million. that image appeared on a forever stamp design released in 2011. >> with all of its issues this is $3.5 million the usps did not have to spend. >> there's a looping roller coaster behind the statute of liberty which is your first hint. >> yeah. >> that it's not the real one. >> that's true. that was bad. >> coming up next, seven things you need to know as you start your day. >> a growing public health

walnut creek went to work putting out this fire, burning at a vacant home. you can see flames shooting out of the house on first avenue near hall lane overnight. nobody here was hurt. number five, yesterday we had great weather to be outside. temperatures were comfortable. that's going to start changing today with a warming trend that's going to bring back 80s and 90s to many of our neighborhoods and it will last through the weekend. and looks like we've got holiday light for number six follow your thursday morning traffic commute at the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights yet. take a look at your drive time from hercules into san francisco. less than 30 minutes. number seven, starting today, the flower piano event is back at san francisco's botanical garden. 12 pianos are scattered throughout the ground. it runs through july 16th. >> another 90 minutes of news including the expected announcement about net neutrality in california. >> we will give you a look at san francisco's fog-free fourth of july fireworks show. >> and our crews just heading

outside as far as live doppler 7. got a couple of items on here. the cloud cover in gray cri is increasing this morning and the breezes are tame, 12 in oakland to 21 in fairfield, but mainly blowing on shore once again. unlike yesterday, the clouds will go away quicker, the sea breeze will slow down and the temperatures will warm back down. upper 50s, not much has changed. '60s at the coast, low 60s. 70 to 76 around the bay and inland by noon, 76 to 85 at 4:00 and 70 to 79 still a little warm at 7:00. people are out and about. what to expect. >> they are and we'll tell you that chp has issued a high breeze warning for the antioch and venetian bridges and bay bridge. just a head's up. overall our traffic maps are looking good. we see slowing out of the central valley and still have the accident partially blocking the left lane coming out of the caldecott tunnel, westbound highway 4 still not seeing any major backups due to that but

they are waiting for a tow truck to clear that out of lanes. and there you go, we've got bart, some changes because of the holiday light with cancellations and shorter trains. otherwise everybody is running on time. now breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> breaking news in oakland, a fire at a two-story building on hayes street and i have an update since the last time i checked in. i want to show you this brand new tweet from firefighters saying that they got everyone out of the building so we know that there were people trapped inside when those flames sparked but they are out of the building at this point. although no word on any injuries quite yet. we're working on getting that information for you. we did know that firefighters had to jump into rescue mode when they got there on scene and at one point they had to pull out their own crews from the building to fight this fire defensively. it sounds like it was a pretty tricky operation this morning. live images from the scene. a crew on the way. we're going to get you an update as soon as possible. back to you. >> thank you. new overnight, crews

responded to a house fire in walnut creek. you can see the flames shooting out of the house on first avenue near hall lane. at the time of the fire, witnesses say they heard fireworks in the area, but we don't know what caused it. there are no reports of any injuries and firefighters tell us the home is abandoned. even with warnings about police cracking down on illegal fireworks people still shot them off for hours. this is the view from our tower camera showing you what happened in san francisco's mission district after sunset and you can see these aren't just sparklers or bottle rockets. they're pretty high. now to the county fire burning in napa and yolo counties. rugged terrain making it difficult for firefighters to get a handle on it and you will see the charred area in red. cal fire says it's spreading into the north into places crews can't get to. the yolo county sheriff's office has lifted some evacuations, though a stretch of highway 128 is still closed. as of this morning the fire is up to 86,000 acres containment

now at 27%. firefighters remain confident they will have it fully contained by tuesday. the pawnee fire in lake county is now 90% contained. so far the fire has burned 15,000 acres and destroyed 22 structures. officials expect full containment this weekend. the rash of summer fires is taking its toll on firefighters in marin county and there may be a second round ahead. >> senior fire captain says the sporadic rains late into the season helped fuel the growth of grass and that is acting as a fast fire starter. he says the threat could change in the fall depending on the weather. >> grasses are your light flashing fuels. we have to worry about later in the season is when the shap pa rel and the trees or larger fuels dry out. >> marin county fire is recommending homeowners take the opportunity now to cut back their grass and shrubbery around their property. and were you here last night? of the tens of tusds who came out to see the fireworks

along the embarcadero. >> the fog stayed away. what a nice change. however, with all of those people trying to find a place to park was a nightmare. police closed the embarcadero near pier 39 as a security measure. you can see those large city trucks that are creating a road block preventing anything from getting through. some drivers told us they circled for an hour trying to leave, also a problem last night with traffic backed up from the embarcadero to the bay bridge. 5:34. happening right now, secretary of state mike pompeo is traveling to north korea looking for answers about its nuclear plans. this is his third trip. he will try and get answers about kim jong-un's intentions after new intelligence suggested that his country has continued to ramp up nuclear capability. now president trump and kim jong-un agreed to the denuclearization of the korean peninsula at the summit in june but no guide posts or framework was established to achieve the

goal. california's net neutrality bill is expected to take a big step forward. lawmakers will likely announce an agreement at the capitol. the measure has been hotly contested and weeks of negotiations about the bill. no details have been released about changes but democratic leaders are call it the strongest net neutrality protections in the nation. net neutrality, which bans internet provides from slowing down or speeding up certain web traffic, was repealed nationwide last month. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. temperatures up in the north bay, low to mid 50s here from 50 in napa and american canyon and clear lake to about 54 in novato, petaluma and vallejo. a little fog around roanoke park, visibility is fine right now. obviously we'll keep an eye on that. we have pretty much mid to upper 50s along the bay shore into the south bay. also in our east bay val iysn c cooler spots. san mateo bridge see the cloud cover, it's a late arriving cloud cover. but it's also going to leave us

quicker today. from clouds to sunshine when driving, ferry ride, a lighter chop thanks to a lighter breeze. mass transit expect it to be warmer this afternoon. east bay valleys, some of the warmer temperatures, 60 this morning and sunshine by noon and 75 and the 80s by 1:00 and hang out there all the way through at least 7:00. down to 78. little more comfort if you're on the back porch maybe having dinner, late dinner about 8:00. south bay, 60 this morning, mostly cloudy, sunshine by 10:00. 67. we'll be in the mid to upper 70s most of the afternoon hours spiking to about 80 around 4:00. high clouds and sunshine at 8:00 and 71. could be a gorgeous sun set. #abcnow if you post on social media. peninsula mid 70s from about 1:00 through 6:00. we could speak to around 77, the hottest time around, 4:00 back down in the 60s by 8:00. we brought sue in today. alexis took the day off.

discovery by bart police. they released this photo showing a gun. officers say they found it on him yesterday. a .9 millimeter weapon with a an illegal high capacity magazine and the man is barred from possessing any firearm because of his criminal history. he was taken into custody at the bart station. the sister of a security guard who was shot and killed in san francisco is thanking police for arresting a suspect less than 24 hours after the crime. 61-year-old security guard rolando romero was face timing with his wife in the philippines while at his job at fitzgerald avenue and walker drive. this was monday morning. suddenly he realized he had been shot. romero died at the hospital. on tuesday officers took 24-year-old cardell coleman into custody and booked him on homicide. >> these thing, hope he does have a conscience to think, that someone he killed is a person,
