dozens of shows all over the city. i do regret i didn't get to stay up -- >> we didn't have to stay up because there it is. >> i was awake and live in the city and i saw none of that. >> you didn't? >> no. >> fog or went inside? >> don't answer that. >> i don't know what happened. >> it's called sleeping. we begin with that wild weather across the country from dangerous heat to those devastating wildfires. at least 64 fires are burning right now in 14 states. and abc's will carr is in yolo county, california, where a massive fire has scorched more than 80,000 acres. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, amy. these fire trucks heading back out to front lines as thousands of firefighters continue to battle these record-setting fires here in california. they're making progress but the danger is far from over. this morning, wildfires scorching every state in the west. the county fire, northern california, burning through 86,000 acres. a thousand homes and buildings threatened and 2500 people

evacuated. firefighters gaining some ground but still battling those dangerous winds and brutal heat. we've watched as these flames have raced down this hillside. this brush bone dry. perfect fuel for this fire. while in colorado a one-two punch, the massive spring fire still growing now at nearly 100,000 acres, the third largest in colorado history, more than 100 homes destroyed. while further north a new fire exploding wednesday. >> oh, my god. this is so bad. the whole mountain is now on fire. >> reporter: the lake christine fire, zero percent contained. helicopters and air tankers dousing the flames as officials order new evacuations. hundreds already forced from their homes. >> i was worried about this from the middle of winter when there was no snow that this was going to be a bad wildfire season and here it is. >> reporter: this morning the airport in aspen is closed because of that new fire in

colorado. in california we've seen 260 more fires this year than the same point last year which was one of the worst ever in the state's history. michael. >> thank you so much for that, will. you know, this heat across the country is showing no sign of easing up. making it harder to contain the fires. 75 million americans in 22 states are under heat watches this morning. and ginger has the latest forecast. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, michael. it was the hottest fourth of july on record from watertown and buffalo, new york, to haines, alaska and now we're still seeing heat advisories, northeast, midwest. but also the red flag warnings and excessive heat watches in the southwest because it is only building with this dome of high pressure in the southwest. the haines index, wildfire measurement of how much moisture is in the atmosphere, is at 6. that's its highest level. 111 las vegas, palm springs for then all that flooding. up to 8 inches of rain in houston. exactly where we find our marcus

moore this morning. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: ginger, good morning. that record rainfall causing problems here in houston. look at the buffalo bayou just behind me. you might be able to see the strong current rushing by. it is still draining the water that paralyzed parts of the region. overnight, extreme flash flooding stranding drivers and entire neighborhoods underwater. sweeping through the city at one point dropping as much as four inches every hour. roads washed away and this sinkhole openingy swallowing a car. and just look at this highway, completely flooded. >> there's flooding and there's at least four stalled vehicles. >> reporter: reports of more than 120 drivers calling in to houston police because they were stranded in floodwater. >> we were expecting 2 to 3 inches of rain for the entire day. mother nature had its own way of calling on us. >> reporter: jose figueroa was driving home when he sprang into action rescuing a family of five trapped inside their car. >> luckily, they could roll down

their windows and get out. it was very scary, i have to admit. >> reporter: the deluge dampening the holiday spirit. houston's freedom over texas concert canceled. and giant letters seen here at the park once spelled out "houston." now a reminder of another holiday flood event. and all of this is reminiscent of hurricane harvey that hit almost one year ago, and for some perspective, at that time, take a look at the bridge behind me. during that storm the water was up to that bridge, at least 25 feet above the water level this morning. and, michael, parts of your hometown still recovering from that devastating storm and still drying out and recovering. >> you are right. they are still recovering after going through so much last year. thank you so much for that. now to the protest that shut down the statue of liberty on independence day. a woman climbi theofhestueorng o be evacuated. abc's whit johnson is here with more. and whit, she was up there for almost three hours before police finally arrested her. >> reporter: michael, that's exactly right. that woman's holiday climb

prompting a massive response. thousands of confused tourists unable to see the iconic statue. liberty island shutting down on what the park service calls its busiest week of the year. dramatic final moments in an hours' long fourth of july standoff. a woman taken down by police after climbing the statue of liberty. police getting her into a safety harness. >> rescue 14 to the statue of liberty. >> reporter: the woman identified as 44-year-old theresa okoumou of staten island starting her dangerous ascent around 3:00 p.m. slipping away from police over and over. okoumou seen here sitting on the famous landmark's pedestal, later lying down, kicking her feet into the air. at times, holding up a shirt reading "rise and resist" and "trump care makes us sick." incredibly, even scaling lady

liberty's leg. >> reporter: authorities forced to evacuate and rushing tourists to safety. >> we could see her like crawling on her hands and knees around it. and then we saw her trying to scale up it. >> reporter: officers using a rope and ladder taking okoumou into custody after about three hours. seven of her fellow members of the group rise and resist also arrested at the statue protesting president trump's immigration policy and hanging a banner reading, "abolish i.c.e." but the group insists they knew nothing about okoumou's plans. >> we had no idea. she didn't discuss it with anybody. we had no idea that she was going to do this. >> reporter: theresa okoumou is expected to appear in manhattan federal court today. u.s. parks police say she is facing a number of possible charges including trespassing, disorderly conduct, and interfering with government functions. it was quite a spectacle out there. >> fortunate she didn't get hurt. >> or anybody else. >> thanks for that, whit. we want to turn to thailand and the race to free the soccer team trapped in that flooded cave. we have brand-new images just coming in. you can see how tough those

conditions are. rescuers dri installing pipes trying to divert water from flowing in and james longman is at the cave entrance. and, james, an official is now saying they may take the boys out in stages. >> reporter: that's right, cecilia. the local thai governor saying they want to be 100% sure the kids are 100% fit before they try to bring any of them out. and a member of our team actually has just spoken to one of the divers who said that what they might do is try to make big holes inside the cave to prevent the boys from ever having to put their head under water. they do not want to force them to dive. it is just too dangerous. rescuers moving quickly bringing air tanks, wetsuits, and dozens of lifejackets before the impending monsoon moves in. inside video showing divers holding against dangerously strong currents. the teams putting in ropes to create a guide for the boys to follow through the labyrinth of cabins.

outside they're training new divers, building dams and running pumps around the clock, pulling water out of the cave at an enormous rate. now the tireless efforts seeming to pay off. authorities say half of that 2.9-mile trek has drained enough that it is accessible without scuba gear. one official telling me, once the water comes down below neck level in the other caves, they hope to fit the boys with lifejackets and float them out one by one. to get a sense of what the team is facing, we went to another cave nearby. these caves go on for such a long way. this one goes on for something like a quarter mile and even thinking about that just kind of gives you the creeps. it's cold. it's damp. it smells. now we're learning more about the boys trapped inside. this is 16-year-old knight. he didn't show up to his own birthday party which is how he was first discovered missing. this boy called titan is the

youngest at just 11. right next to him, 15-year-old nick giving the victory sign. and 13-year-old dom seen here smiling for the camera also spent his birthday trapped in the cave. his mother posting this photo on tuesday showing him and his coach during a past celebration. and as we speak, officials are still trying to get the phone line down. but they keep being hampered by the water. parents here still desperate to speak to their little boys. amy? >> james, thank you. joining us the usaf captain, jessica tait. captain tait, thanks for being with us this morning. we know the impending rain and the monsoons are your biggest concerns. talk about how the efforts are going to pump all that water out of the cave. >> the conditions are very ever changing and very treacherous. when you think about the nature of cave diving, that probably, in the spectrum of diving, is one of the most difficult forms of diving. you also have the environmental conditions. conditions of the children that you have to consider, as well as

the weather. all these factors are going into the decision-making process and as we participate in this thai-led multinational search and rescue operation. >> as you look at your option, i understand that the best plan may to be actually float the boys out of that cave using lifejackets. are you optimistic about this plan? >> every course of action they look at, we provide factors, the risk factors involved looking at the conditions and really just kind of where we can support. whatever decision is made on how to best extract the children in the safest way possible, we're going to be here and back our thai partners on that. >> we have seen some videos of the boys. they appear to be doing well. any updates on their conditions? how they're doing? >> you have everyone working together here around the clock putting all their best ideas forth. we're looking at all the considerations when it comes to the rain, when it comes to, you know, cave diving and the treasure russ conditions there. everything is going into it but we're fully supportive and working together.

>> i know the families are there waiting for any word about their potential plan out of that cave. jessica tait, captain tait, thanks for being here this morning. >> thank you, ma'am. >> we are certainly wishing them well. amy, thank you. we want to turn to washington now where president trump is just days away from announcing his supreme court pick. and there is serious lobbying happening behind the scenes. our chief white house correspondent jonathan karl joins us now. some conservatives have made it clear they are not happy with one of the president's top picks. >> reporter: the president has a list he says he's working from with 25 conservatives. seven of those he has spoken to already and told by white house officials, one of them you see in the top row brett kavanaugh seen as some on the right as insufficiently conservative because of positions that he has written on obamacare and abortion. he has received calls from some conservative republican senators including ted cruz, rand paul and tom cotton.

but we're told, cecilia, that brett kavanaugh is still very much on the president's short list. >> there is lobbying going on on the other side as well, jon. liberals increasing pressure on two moderate republicans who they are hoping might buck the president's pick. >> reporter: those two moderate republicans are two, the only two in the senate who are pro-abortion rights. they are susan collins and lisa murkowski. both have -- i must point out, cecilia, both of them voted for every single republican justice that has come up since they have been in the senate, about one-third of the supreme court. so we'll see where that goes but there is intense pressure on moderate democrats. there are three democratic senators who voted for neil gorsuch, the president's first pick. all three are up for re-election this year. you see heidi heitkamp, joe donnelly, and joe manchin. republicans are putting pressure on them to vote yes on whoever the president ultimately picks. >> the president says he'll make that choice in a couple of days. okay, thanks, jon. amy? overseas to a major development in that poisoning mystery in the uk.

scotland yard saying the couple fell critically ill just miles away from where that former russian spy and his daughter were poisoned months ago sickened by the very same nerve agent. and abc's eva pilgrim has the latest. >> reporter: this morning a counterterrorism investigation under way into that deepening poison mystery. two people are fighting for their lives. authorities confirming through tests they were exposed to the russian nerve agent novichok. the same nerve agent used against a former russian spy and his daughter four months ago. this new case just seven miles away from where that pair was poisoned. >> to see two more people exposed to the novichok in the u.k. is obviously deeply disturbing and i know the police will be leaving no stone unturned. >> reporter: police at first thought this was a case of two people taking contaminated drugs. but this video capturing a first responder wearing protective gear, perhaps the first clue it

was something more. one of the victim's friends describing his condition soon after he became ill. >> he was making funny noises and he was rocking backwards and forwards. >> reporter: the two identified by friends in british media as charlie rowley and dawn sturgess, listed in critical condition. investigators now retracing their steps, taping off the places they are thought to have been last. two of their last stops in salisbury steps from where sergei skripal was exposed to novichok in march. the couple being treated at the same hospital as the father and daughter, as officials try to determine if more could still be out there putting more people at risk. >> novichok maintains toxicity for months. whereas older nerve agents only last for hours. >> reporter: and still a lot of questions this morning. what we do know is this hospital is once again trying to keep two people alive that were exposed

to that same deadly nerve agent. now, the kremlin has responded. a spokesperson saying they are concerned about this new poisoning but once again denying any russian involvement. amy? >> all right, eva pilgrim, so frightening for anyone who lives in that area. >> yeah. thank you for that, amy. we'll go to a fourth of july tradition. yeah. there he is, joey chestnut, he has a brand-new record. he is the famous 11-time champ of nathan's hot dog eating contest on coney island. he took the mustard belt again this year beating his own record. he downed 74 hot dogs in just 10 minutes and when they asked how did you do that he said i just got -- i found a vicious rhythm. he found a vicious rhythm. 74 hot dogs, 10 minutes and miki sudo was the top woman and ate 37 franks. >> why? >> she is the hot dog queen for the fifth year in a row. why do you two look like that? >> it actually makes me physically ill to see that.

temperatures top 100 degrees. and it was a very happy fourth for the young survivor injured in that middle school shooting in noblesville, indiana, in may. and the hero teacher who took that shooter down. they were both leading the city's holiday parade. it was the student's first public appearance since the shooting. we are so happy to see them there. serena williams is soaring at wimbledon advancing to the third round taking over just an hour to vanquish her second round opponent. we'll all be watching when she plays tomorrow. >> i love that very vanquished her opponent. that's great. an nbc exclusive with the young woman seriously injured in a terrifying parasailing crash in mexico when her rope broke free, sending her flying out of control for 45 minutes. katie malone is out of the hospital after nearly a month and now she's telling her story and abc's gio benitez is here with that. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning. it's just incredible. we saw as she struggled to steer that parasail looking more like a rag doll in the air.

she eventually passed out making a crash landing and this morning her family is saying it's a miracle she survived. she is the survivor of that heart-stopping parasailing accident captured on tape. this morning 24-year-old katie malone is out of the hospital. >> happy to be out and gist get back to everyday life and move forward. >> reporter: speaking out for the first time exclusively with abc news about that terrifying experience. >> when i was up there flipping around and stuff, i was able to hold myself and carry my weight and brace myself. >> here we go, katie. >> reporter: on vacation in puerta vallarta celebrating her birthday when she took off for that parasailing adventure. moments later the tether connecting her to the boat coming loose. you can see her flying uncontrollably through the air for 45 terrifying minutes. >> when i was going down fast that's when i started spinning in circles and got sick so then i just, you know, started saying a prayer and right before i crashed i passed out.

>> reporter: the rope parasail at times going horizontal bobbing back and forth and crash landing at an airport suffering several injuries including a fractured skull, broken ribs and a collapsed lung. spending 26 days in the hospital fighting for her life. injuries so serious she was airlifted from mexico to san diego. her father watching as she landed on the tarmac. >> she's doing good. her spirits are up. we're just happy that she's back over here to get, you know, the proper treatment. >> we're just happy to get her out and the fourth of july is quite a day to have her out. >> thanks for everyone who supported me and been here for me. it's been helping a lot to get through this. >> reporter: just incredible. recovering from so many of those injuries and of course it's going to take time to heal. incredibly, when we asked her if she would go parasailing again she didn't rule it out and said the first thing she was going to do when she got home, take a nap and go so those fireworks.

>> after seeing that i never want to go. >> i did it once, one and done. we want to video of police tasing a man in pennsylvania that sparked so much outrage. the man tased while he was sitting on the sidewalk this morning is speaking out about it for the first time. linsey davis is here with this and he's now suing police. >> reporter: he is, good morning to you, cecilia. he is suing the officer and the police department alleging excessive force, inadequate medical attention and racial profiling. sean williams' attorney is demanding the mayor of lancaster deactivate the police officer who tased him and subsequently caused an uproar online and across the country. >> legs straight out. >> reporter: this morning, 27-year-old sean williams seen here sitting on a curb when he is suddenly tasered by police. >> oh, come on, bro. >> i'm listening. >> you really going to tase him. >> reporter: speaking out about the dramatic police takedown

captured on cell phone video. >> if i wasn't becoming a problem i was trying to wonder why the taser was even brought to the scene. >> reporter: last thursday, the lancast lancaster, pennsylvania police department responded to a 911 call about a man with a bat. according to the police report, they came upon williams and officers struck the him to sit on the ground with legs forward. he appears to be following orders but an officer then shoots him with a taser gun claiming he was not following instructions. >> i was 100% confused about the whole situation. i was wondering why they were giving me all these different directives. >> reporter: on monday williams filed a lawsuit against that officer and the police department for $75,000 for what he says was excessive use of force and racial profiling. >> no matter what race you are or what color you are or what background you are, that should not be done to you. >> reporter: the video is sparking anger online. the mayor calling the use of force of great concern. >> on a personal level he deserves personal justice and

i heading to blue sleep's dr. jordan stern to see if he can fix my insomnia. turns out i'm doing everything wrong. for starters, i go to bed as so get home but between three shows that varies from 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. not counting extra shoots. >> it's important to have a routine schedule because your brain has a routine schedule and all of the cells in your body have a 24-hour cycle. >> reporter: my second mistake staying in bed even when i can't sleep. >> after 20 minutes, get out of bed, do something that is relaxing then when you start feeling sleepy get back into bed. >> reporter: to make up for my lack of sleep, i take long naps later in the day. >> ideally you should nap no longer than 20 minutes and try to keep it at least six or seven hours before you go to sleep. >> reporter: even my pajamas were wrong. >> the issue with pajamas is that they can probably cause ov overheating. >> reporter: finally, my eating habits.

>> happy pizza day! >> eating a big heavy meal will make you feel sluggish. >> reporter: so i quit pigging out before bedtime, got lighter pjs and started to go to bad at 9:00 a.m. i'm determined to make it till 9:00 a.m. it's all part of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, the gold standard of treatment. still, my biggest challenge was less straightforward. >> when i finally get into my bed my find is racing and i can't seem to calm down. >> reporter: the best solution for me was a trick called constructive worry. a couple of hours before bedtime jot down anything weighing on your mind and how to resolve it. through weeks later -- >> you're sleeping a reasonable amount of time and the proportion of deep sleep and light let you get is almost normal. >> reporter: with a few more adjustments, i'm finally sleeping eight hours. for abc news, diane macedo, new york. >> joined by dr. jennifer ashton

to help us understand this study a little bit more. before we do that i want to ask our audience how many of you get at least seven hours of sleep a night? >> oh, nice. >> quite a few. there are still a lot who didn't raise their hand. what is -- doc, so many didn't raise their hands. what is the one thing you recommend to help us sleep better. >> here's the thing that has to be excluded first. when they say they're not sleeping well which is medically important, you need to first exclude true medical causes for sleep. this is really, really important. people are finding themselves waking up in the middle of the night. it could be a cardiac issue, you wake up and have to sit with your legs hanging over or prop yourself up on two or more pillows, that could indicate a serious cardiac issue. going to the bathroom once a night okay. two or three times not okay and coughing could be anything from post nasal drip, and then sleep

apnea are serious medical causes that have been excluded before we can tackle the behavior. >> there is a difference between men and women. >> so fascinating. women are biologically programmed to be lighter sleepers. that's got to come from the fact we've got to have one eye open if a baby or child needs us and men are programmed to sleep more soundly when their partner is sleeping next to them. what do you think about that? >> don't look at me, doc, hey, hey, hey. what can we do to get a good night's sleep? have our partner there? >> get someone sleeping next to you if you're a man. there are a lot of great ol rk,uindfo >> anything with a screen at least an hour.
