because the fourth of july has passed. >> since the 4th fell on a wednesday this year, some believe they will take the party to the weekend and continued danger of fireworks, both of wildfires and life-threatening injuries. >> we have both to show you. eric thomas is live at oakland police headquarters at the neighborhood that really was ground zero for fireworks last night. >> reporter: that would be at the fruitville district. even though it's july 5th, we heard quite a bit of fireworks still going off and quite a bit of illegal fireworks set off last night. even 17 hours after the professional fireworks shows ended, the amateurs were still at it in oakland as we and the city councilman found out when he was talking with a constituent. >> you hear that right now? >> reporter: that was no firecracker and it sounded

237 last night. it burned one acre and under control in less than an hour. they believe it was possibly started by fireworks. all fireworks are illegal in san jose. a 33-year-old antioch man suffered major injuries to both hands after he found a lit discarded illegal firework. he was rushed to the hospital hoping doctors can save both hands. it happened this morning outside and auto-repair shop in antioch. >> reporter: what happened to an employee of this auto repair shop this morning is too gruesome to share on camera. one described his brother-in-law's injuries after he shot off a firework. >> the tendon that keeps moving the finger was hanging. >> reporter: he and his brother-in-law work at gumaro's auto repair in antioch. they just brought in this dumpster from outside when he

found an abandoned firework. the owner of the autoshop said they made the discovery as they were putting trash inside the dumpster. >> they were picking up trash from the shop to put it in the can. i guess he found the firework that wasn't lit. failed to ignite. >> reporter: bravo said he tried to discourage him from setting it off after he realized it had a short fuse. >> i said, no, no, don't fire it up. the fuse was too small. i was in the restroom and came out and he lit it up and it exploded in his hand. >> reporter: he was immediately treated and transported to the hospital. the 33-year-old father of two had lost a lot of blood. the spent firework was found outside the shop. captain george lang of the contra costa fire district said the man's injuries were severe. he said it's frustrating for them because this year the county increased its warnings

about the dangers of fireworks. >> in addition to physical injuries to people, there is a potential for fires to start and spread. >> reporter: all types of fireworks are illegal in contra costa county, even the safe and sane kind, many here seem to disregard. >> gilroy police revealed they gave 62 citations, the number of criminal citations were twice the number from last year. officers responded to 176 calls for service about fireworks. for the first time, gilroy police used an app that made it's easier for officers to respond quickly. san jose reported 164 calls for service, only one citation issued but they're keeping an online reporting line open for the weekend where people can

you can see howr much of an are is burnt since it started saturday when you compare the square footage to the bay area, stretching from the northern tip of san francisco from belmont to the peninsula. this fire is massive. we're keeping an eye on smoke not far from the town of brooks. a lot of blue sky visible there, although you see haze. compare this to monday where we could barely see the spencer christian here with a look at firefighters and more heat. >> at this moment, it's 93 degrees, temperatures rising the last couple of hours. relative humidity has been dropping, now down to 20% and the wind remains gusty at 13 miles an hour. we look at the next 24 hours, the wind remains relatively

class. the coroner determined it was accidental but his parents were distressed by rumors it was a suicide. danville police say video of the pool during class helped them reach the conclusion curry's death was an accident. no charges will be filed. a woman is under arrest accused of stealing a police vehicle, driving it to san francisco and back to oakland before getting caught. melanie woodrow is live. >> police arrested a suspect after an animal control officer spotted that stolen vehicle. that worked out for the other occupant of the vehicle as well, a dog. >> reporter: one woman's joyride in a stolen police vek went from oakland to san francisco back to oakland before she was caught. it began about 12:30 where they were responding to an assault on the 2100 block of myrtle street.

values, shared values in california. >> reporter: east bay assemblyman and lawmakers are trying to get a net equality rule passed. a rule last month called for open and equal access for all users. california's law prohibits slowdown of websites or preferred sites or priorities by the provider and compliance through state contracts. >> just like speech, everybody has the freedom of speech, so therefore internet should be free and equal for everyone, and therefore california should start this strong neutrality protection. >> reporter: one of the agencies argues, the proposed law would inhibit investment and innovation in california. what the country needs is permanent and bipartisan legislation for all websites.
