welcome back. fourth of july celebrations went horribly wrong for a man in lakeland, florida. jonathan soto was seriously injured here when a mortar-style firework exploded in his hand. he was waiting for it to ignite. he suffered with injuries to his hand and chest. alcohol was a factor. a woman in dallas has given new meaning to the term "don't mess with texas" by taking down an alleged carjacker. >> the suspect jumped into her mini van while she was paying for gas. her children were in the back seat, so she pulled a gun out of the glove compartment and shot him in the head when he refused to stop.

>> the suv crashed into a pole. the suspect is hospitalized in serious condition but the children were not hurt. a teenager in maine has made what's called a miraculous recovery after being shot in the head by a pellet gun. >> talking about charlie quimby. his mother was told he would not survive. even a priest was called in to read last rites to him. then charlie shocked the family and doctors by waking up and moving around. >> i was so happy, i started crying. i was like, oh, my god. this is just wonderful. i didn't expect that at all. >> his mother says charlie still has a long road ahead but is now expected to make a full recovery. and doctors are saying removing that bullet from the pellet gun is too dangerous, so he will have to live with it lodged in his head. >> he does have a long road of recovery ahead.

pressure mounting before the monsoon rains move in. inside, divers are putting in ropes for the boys as a guide through the cave. outside, experts are training new divers, running pumps day and night. and on thursday, the thai navy s.e.a.l.s. releasing pictures showing progress and how much of the water has been drained. but as of now, there's no clear plan for getting the boys out. the boys have been practicing breathing with diving masks but have not yet been trained to do so in the water. >> if you don't know how to swim and you're in a very black environment as you are in a cave it's not a good environment to learn in. try to get them comfortable, create an environment where they can safely get away, that's feasible. >> reporter: one official telling james longman -- one idea involves fitting the boys

with life jackets and floating them out one by one once the water comes down below the neck level. we're learning from authorities, because of safety concerns, they have ruled out having the boys swim and dive out of the cave. instead, crews will continue drilling to make passag ways wider and keep water levels down. >> we should mention that james longman at the cave mentioned, they identified the diver and he's being hailed as a hero to that country, understandably so. but it shows the dangers. staying in the region, mike pompeo is on a trip to north korea. >> this is the secretary's nuclear negotiators. meanwhile, the white house is pushing back on claims that it's softening its stance against

north korea. >> and president trump is in for a welcome when he heads to england. a trump baby balloon. the balloon was approved by london's mayor after more than 10,000 signed a petition. the trump administration is scrambling to meet a court-ordered deadline to reunite parents and children separated by its controversial border policy. in boston a mother saw her 8-year-old daughter for the first time in eight weeks. the emotional reunion comes amid more news there may be more separated families than first thought. here is marcus moore. >> reporter: as cameras capture the rare family migrant reunions, hhs says there are more children separated than first reported. the hhs secretary is reporting under 3,000 remain in the government's care, that number

considerably higher than the 2,000 first reported by hhs. the new numbers were revealed in a call with reporters, describing the situation as unprecedented and promising the resulting reunifications will be as compassionate as can be. the court deadline says that they have to be reunited by july 26th. but there are questions on how it will be done. in a series of tweets, the president wrote when people with or without children enter our country, they must be told to leave. tell the people out, and they must leave, just as if they were standing on your front lawn. and there are 11 unaccompanied migrant children being cared for at this church facility, and hhs secretary says they will use dna screening to determine family relationships and reunite all of those separated families. marcus moore, abc news, ft. worth, texas. we're hearing new details about the fourth of july activist who forced a shutdown

and there's breaking news from thailand in the race to rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped in a flooded cave. one of the former navy s.e.a.l.s. has died from a lack of oxygen during the rescue mission. that comes as more heavy rains are on the way. here's james longman. >> reporter: with monsoon rains closing in, the race is on. rescue workers in that thai cave drilling through rock, laying pipes, constructing a dam to divert water, and that could make a crucial difference. it will remove drastically more water than the pumps alone. the goal is to reduce the water level inside to give the boys a chance to escape. areas in front of the cave previously only accessible by drivers now passable by foot. but part of that maze includes chambers filled to the ceiling with water. narrow areas they will try to expand. right now diving is off the table, the fear that they can panic.

welcome back. fo welcome back. fourth of july celebrations went horribly wrong for a man in lakeland, florida. jonathan soto was seriously injured here when a mortar-style firework exploded in his hand. he was waiting for it to ignite. he suffered with injuries to his hand and chest. alcohol was a factor. a woman in dallas has given new meaning to the term "don't mess with texas" by taking down an alleged carjacker. >> the suspect jumped into her mini van while she was paying for gas. her children were in the back seat, so she pulled a gun out of the glove compartment and shot him in the head when he refused to stop.

>> the suv crashed into a pole. the suspect is hospitalized in serious condition but the children were not hurt. a teenager in maine has made what's called a miraculous recovery after being shot in the head by a pellet gun. >> talking about charlie quimby. his mother was told he would not survive. even a priest was called in to read last rites to him. then charlie shocked the family and doctors by waking up and moving around. >> i was so happy, i started crying. i was like, oh, my god. this is just wonderful. i didn't expect that at all. >> his mother says charlie still has a long road ahead but is now expected to make a full recovery. and doctors are saying removing that bullet from the pellet gun is too dangerous, so he will have to live with it lodged in his head. >> he does have a long road of recovery ahead. but quite a miracle.
