comments come hours after his embattled epa chief resigned. scandal-plagued scott pruitt faces at least a dozen investigations across multiple government agencies and was repeatedly accused of using his position for personal benefit. >> i'm not happy about certain things but he's done a fantastic job running the epa. >> reporter: and president trump's jab at the me too movement comes as his administration added former fox news co-president bill shine to his communications team. shine has been accused by some of covering up sexual misconduct claims against bill o'reilly and roger ailes. both men president trump defended. maggie and kendis. >> yeah, a lot of people saying it was interesting timing there. janai norman in d.c. for us, thank you, janai. breaking overnight fears of a trade war between the world's biggest economies. at midnight the trump administration launched the opening salvo hiking tariffs on $34 billion worth of chinese imports. well, china is promising to strike back in a few weeks. the trump administration plans to move ahead with tariffs on

another $16 billion in chinese exports and again china is promising to retaliate. president trump is now just days away from announcing his supreme court nominee. the president plans to tell the nation his replacement for justice anthony kennedy on monday night. the three front-runners are federal judges brett kavanaugh, amy coney barrett and raymond kethledge. meanwhile, senate minority leader chuck schumer reportedly urged trump to nominate judge merrick garland. he was then president obama's choice to replace the late justin antonin scalia but was blocked by senate republicans. now to that big breaking news out of northern thailand. a rescue diver has died some two weeks into that desperate race to free the 12 boys and their coach from the flooded cave. that diver was a 38-year-old retired thai navy s.e.a.l. he ran out of oxygen while trying to place oxygen canisters along a possible evacuation route for the team. it comes as crews rush to drain those floodwaters ahead of a fresh onslaught of downpours. here's abc's elizabeth hur.

>> reporter: the pressure mounting, the race is on for rescuers to stay ahead of mother nature delivering air tanks, wet suits and life jackets to the soccer team before the monsoon rains move in. inside divers are putting in ropes for the boys as a guide through the cave. outside experts are training new divers, building dams and running pumps day and night and on thursday, the thai navy s.e.a.l.s releasing these new pictures showing crews making progress and just how much of the water has been drained. but as of now there is still no clear plan for getting the boys out. one idea now involves fitting the boys with life jackets and floating them out one by one once the water comes down below the neck level. abc news has learned because of safety concerns, authorities determined the boys swimming out of the cave is no longer an option. instead crews will be drilling to make the passageways wider

and to keep the water levels down. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. >> thanks, elizabeth. here at home a new heat threat is fueling more than 60 large active wildfires in the west. one of the fastest growing is the lake christine fire north of aspen, colorado. so far it's destroyed at least 3 homes and now threatens 500 others. in southern colorado the spring fire is now the third largest blaze in state history. it's destroyed more than 100 homes and is threatening some 2,000 others. meantime, just outside denver firefighters had to deal with another threat, a rare high elevation tornado. it happened near the edge of a wildfire that's already burned about 17 square miles. officials say it apparently caused little damage and had no effect on that fire. >> fascinating scenery. well, time now for a look at your forecast on this friday morning. good morning. the heat is finally breaking in the northeast as the cold front moves through.

officials in central mexico now say at least 24 people have been killed and dozens more injured in a series of explosions at a fireworks facility outside mexico city. among those killed were firefighters and police officers who were responding to the first explosion. the cause of the blast under investigation. secretary of state mike pompeo was in north korea this morning. it's his first visit since last month's historic summit in singapore. pompeo says he wants to fill in some of the details on the commitments made by kim jong-un during that meeting. the trip follows multiple reports that kim, despite promises of denuclearization, is expanding nuclear and missile facilities. we are learning some new details about the investigation into the mysterious poisoning of a couple in rural england.

and cages wrapped in foiled blankets and many questions remain about how the remaining children will be reunited with their families. hhs officials say they're conducting an exhaustive review of cases to determine which children in their custody have been separated and are even using dna testing to verify family members. natalie brunell, abc news, los angeles. >> our thanks to natalie. there in los angeles. a woman in dallas, in the meantime, has taken down an alleged carjacker by shooting him in the head. she says the suspect jumped into her minivan as she was paying for gas. her two young sons were in the backseat at the time. so she jumped into the passenger seat, pulled a gun out of the glove compartment and fired a single shot when he refused to stop. the suv crashed into a pole. the suspect survived and is in the hospital in serious condition. the children were not harmed. a teenager in maine has made what some are calling a miraculous recovery after being shot in the head by a pellet gun. charlie quimby was rushed to the

hospital where his mother was told he would not survive his injuries. a priest was even called in to read last rites, but then charlie shocked everybody by waking up and moving around. >> i was so happy, i started crying, you know, i started crying, i'm like, oh, my god, it's just wonderful. i didn't that at all. i didn't expect that he was going to come off that ventilator. >> his mother says charlie still has a long road ahead, but he's now expected to make a full recovery. so a couple of newlyweds in wisconsin still trying to catch their breath after a bizarre close call on their wedding day, no less. >> i can't imagine this. you just get married. you're sitting at a picnic table talking about how much you're in love, maybe knocking back a couple of cold ones when then this happened, literally a tree falls on you. look at that. now, the couple was okay. >> yeah. >> but definitely a little shook up. >> that truly is the epitome of a close call right there and sort of see if he already started grabbing her arm, getting her out of the way.
