mta officials say all of this is part of the $316 million van ness improvement project. >> by removing leftturn lanes we're making things safer for pedestrians crossing the street. it's also going to help us install our new transit, put buses in the center lanes there, and that's going to speed up muny for people riding the 37 and 49. >> reporter: mta says traffic signals will also be retimed with the goal of improving signals. but that doesn't mean drivers like the change. >> i have to go around and come back, and that's going to add like 7 to 10 minutes in rush hour traffic. >> reporter: the project is expected to be completed by 2020. one person has died in a wildfireurning right the california/oregon border.

the victim's identity has not been released. it's jumped and charred at least 8,000 acres. i-5 had to be shutdown in the area. it has since reopened. governor brown has declared a state of emergency and fire crews from marin county are now on their way. as of this morning the fire has burned more than 88,000 acres, 37% contained. and here's some perspective of just how big that really is. if this fire were burning in the east bay you'd basically go from h hercules all the way down to san leandro. officials expect full containment by this weekend. >> new at 11:00, richmond police aa home invasion robbery suspect

is in the hospital after a homeowner shot him. it happened shortly after midnight. police say the 47-year-old suspect tried to break into two other houses before he forced himself into the house on alta mira. that suspect was taken to a local trauma center and all we know he's still alive. fire officials have lifted a halth advisory that was in place this morning that refineries sent out a cautionary advisory after an incident they described as a unit upset. the warning went to a community nearby saying some people could experience skin irritation. we have not had any reports of any issues. thener reports police are increasing patrols along the embarcadero near where that crash happened. witnesses describe the car barrelling into the pedicab and then speeding off.

and this is surveillance video of the suspect's car. the pedicabdriver was critically injured and still in the hospital. and police are still looking for the driver responsible for the crash. happening now a live look at santa cruz boardwalk. the national weather service does have a warning of what's happening in the waters. it's a beach hazard warning and lasts until at least 5:00 tomorrow night. abc 7 news was at steamer lane a short time ago, and you can see these surfers are really enjoying the waves. you have to realize the current in that water right now is especially strong. keep a close eye on your kids and pets and as you know never turn your back on the water. elon musk is sending his own engineers to help rescue the thai soccer team trapped a flooded cave. 12 boys and their coach have been trapped there since june 23rd. musk is also offering rescuers

shine, the former fox news co-president who handled the network's sexual harassment scandals. shine is now the deputy chief of staff for communications. a road rage incident caught on camera. it shows a woman being berated by a pasadena city employee. >> you can't block her. you cannot. just because it says you have a building and safety -- >> you're lucky i didn't slam into your car. >> he said it kind of fast, but he accused her of cutting him off, so he decided to block her in. witnesses say the confrontation lasted a good ten minutes and the woman had her daughter in the car at the time. the city of pasadena says it is now investigating the incident. let's talk about something fun, the weekend. need some plans? we have you covered with some cheese and music.

i we worked with pg&eof to save energy because wenie. wanted to help the school. they would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didn't cut off the light. the teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. so they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights! those three young ladies were teaching the whole school about energy efficiency. we actually saved $50,000. and that's just one school, two semesters, three girls. together, we're building a better california.
