scarey moments today in the east bay as a wild fair roars on. you can see from this video the smoke just drifting over the freeway and flames literally right next to the road as traffic whizzes by. the fire is burning on both sides of the road. led to shutting down the freeway in both directions for several hours. taking a look at our traffic map right now, the westbound side is open again, but you can see all that purple east. chp says eastbound remains closed right now and will remain once fire crews give the okay. fire ma they are getting help with the air helicopters, making water

drops. this map shows the area where that fire is burning. it is right now grantline road. it is up to 25% contained. take a look at this. a truckdriver stopped to help out the firefighters. he hooked up a hose and started spraying down what he could. this is one of several fires that kept bay area firefighters busy today. those conditions today made it easy for brush fires to spread quickly. let's go to if this will be an issue. >> the combination of dry vegetation and gusty afternoon wind means the fires can spread. look at it three months ago. it is lush. it is green. today, though, what a dramatic difference to our landscape. it is dry. it is brown. winds right now have calmed down. but still rather active between

no one was hurt and the cause is under investigation. we'll keep you up-to-date on fire conditions on line and throughout our newscasts tomorrow. developing news now. a fatale collision involving a car and a train. two people inside the car are dead after the man behind the wheel drove around the crossing gates. abc 7 news is live in san jose with more on this story. >> reporter: it's been nearly 11 hours since the crash, and crews are still here. it happened right in front of a business, which happened to capture the collision on video. security video shows customers outside enjoying their beer when all of a sudden a vehicle collides with a train. the car is mangled while the traiiaaw the wholethin >> a the corner of my eye i happened to see this dude turning right when the train

came and it hit him. for half a second it didn't register what it was. >> the train operator roughly 20 passengers on board suffered no serious injuries. >> it felt like a tin can was crunching in on it. you see the walls crushing down on you, you don't know what to expect. >> the male driver of the buick and his male passenger died at the scene. they may have been living out of their car. it was packed with possessions. >> we all went out to the car and the dude was barely breathing and people were telling them to stay with him. it is hard to survive a wreck like that. >> the man behind the wheel still tried to drive around them. >> we're just encouraging everyone that safety is really everyone's job. so whether you are a pedestrian,

>> how many of you? >> 13. >> 13. arriving at the hospital with a military escort, the entire eighth floor of that hospital dedicated to their treatment. rescue teams now continuing their work, resupplying the tunnels with oxygen. these children are strong, the governor said. they have been briefed on a plan and they are ready to come out. rescuers have been bringing the boys food, water and medical supplies, hoping to build back their strength. >> to be without food and a lot of water for nine days makes you pretty weak. so it is a period of deconditioning, which the boys need to overcome. >> the boys have been learning how to swim and practicing going underwater, preparing for the six hour journey out of that cave. divers using the bud tdy system.

out safely. >> cave diving expert is watching the rescue from florida. >> i'm excited to see what the guys are doing. i continue to pray for success. >> he not only teaches people how to cave dive. he's also rescued stranded divers before. >> to keep his hands free and press the fins against the cave wall. >> instead of a traditional scuba diving mask and regulator, he believes they will use a full face mask on the boys to keep them from panicking underwater. >> if they can relax, things will go well. >> but the danger remains far from over. >> hopefully everybody will come out safe and sound and we'll see this probably in a movie in a few years. >> he is very hopeful.

he calls them world class and the best of the best. abc 7 news. >> abc news will air a special edition of 2020 tuesday night at 9:00 on the cave rescues. in the meantime, for the latest you can download the abc 7 news app and enable those push alerts. now to several wild fires. one of the most threatening is the fire on the oregon border. it has grown to nearly 48 square miles. one person died in this fire and three firefighters have been injured. one of those firefighters has been released from the burn cent center. cal fire says the fire is also threatening two power plants, water systems and endangered species habitats. >> a small fire is 85% contained

came to the rescue of a surfer who became stranded on the rocks of a state beach this afternoon. an off duty life guard helped the man swim into the ocean where he could be rescued. you can see that surfer being lifted into the helicopter. he was lowered on to the beach near by. you can see the surfer gives him a big hug, a big thanks for a successful rescue this afternoon. >> a movie had a successful limited review this weekend. sorry to bother you is the latest film to shine a light on the city. >> i just really need a drop. >> "sorry to bother you" tells

what are we going to expect for the rest of the weekend. let's get to drew. >> it was really a nice weekend. but saturday and sunday nothing but sunshine. we will see some gradual cooling in the coming days. live doppler 7 showing you it is a clear sky overhead. look in the central valley right now. nothing but stars overhead now. take you outside. a live look. you do notice the flags. it is still a breezy night out there. and that wind once again tomorrow will have that effect of keeping the coast cool, but still rather cool. 50s and 60s for the most part. some of that wild air holding on. san jose still warm. 56 in san francisco and santa rosa coming in with a current temperature of 76 degrees. a couple of clouds popping up. otherwise, it is a lot of stars out there, mainly clear inland.

temperatures dropping into the 50s along the bay shor so here is the biggest picture. live doppler 7, along with satellite, much of northern california and the west coast had a lot of sunshine today. but you look off to the east. what we're tracking, some monsoonal moisture. you see the high pressure spinning. you zoom in a little bit closer into california. a couple of showers pop up earlier today. as you go into the later portions of this week, say thursday or friday, not out of the question that talake tah could see a shower pop up. 8:00 in the morning cool on the coast. we're in the 50s. 50 to low 60s. our warmer spots in that hour by the low 70s. already into the 80s around the bay. we're in the 60s and into the 70s. if you like today, you you will

closed. dozens have been killed and two million people forced to evacuate because of major flooding in southwest japan. flood water thus parts of the country. rivers reverse their banks and landslides in four areas. an internation team of divers and search and rescue personnel are racing through time to save the remaining nine. heavy rain forecast threatened to increase water levels even more in that cave. and those specially trained dive teams are training now. it is a pain staking process, complicated by winding caverns, pitch back conditions and new here's matt with the treacherous work ahead. >> reporter: rescue operation full of pitfalls, drudges over miles of slick or submerged

rock. they have hauled away boulders from the cave's path and used underwater drills to chip away at the cave's surface. air tanks strapped at their backs as they wade through the cabins. the 90 total divers involved in this human convoy exhausting crucial oxygen supplies. those giant pumps still working full throttle to drain millions of gallons a day. the water level down below constantly measured. we traveled to a cave with similar structure. >> imagine doing this underwater. now, the other issue is if this thing is filled with water, finding the actual hole is nearly impossible. >> to bring the remaining eight boys on their coach out, that crew of rescuers guided by ropes in the light on their head lamps

as they make their way through the maize of flooded passageways and narrow tunnels. much of it underwater. they were practicing putting full face masks on boys the same size as those stranded young athletes. divers teaching the boys how to swim and practicing going underwater preparing for that risky journey to safety. >> divers use ago bing a buddy to pull the boys out to reduce the risk of the boys getting lost in the fast flowing and dark waters. the exhausting trek just to reach the boys and nearly the same time to get out, punctuated by the death of a navy seal that ran out of air. the local governor saying he hopes the mission can be completed in three to four days before the monsoon rains

waters for ten days before the first divers reached them. since then rescuers have been working to get them food, water and medical supplies, trying to build back their strength as they prepared for the rescue. the boys given blankets to combat hypo thermia. >> to be without food and a lot of water for nine days makes you pretty weak. so it is a period of deconditioning, which the boys need to overcome. >> oxygen levels a dangerously low 17%. the risk of the remaining boys developing hypoxia could cause brain damage all too real. the road to recovery a long one. now inside this hospital making sure the remaining are strong enough. doctors tell us they will be tested for any number of infections, including cave disease. they will also be tested for any
