when people ask what it is like to be the only child, i say it depends on who your parents are. i was lucky. my mom was a teacher. in the 1960s and 1970s, she taught history in the public high schools of washington, d.c. and mckinney tech and h.d. woodson. her example taught me the importance of equality for all americans. my mom was a trailblazer. when i was 10, she went to law school and became a prosecutor. my introduction to law came at our dinner table. her trademark line was use your common sense, what rings true and what rings false. that's good advice for a juror and for a son. one of the few women prosecutors

of that time over came barriers and became a trial judge. the president introduced me tonight as judge kavanaugh. to me, that title always belongs to my mom. my dad went to law school at night working full-time. he has passed down to me his passion for playing and watching sports. i love him dearly. the motto of my judge in high school were -- i tried to live i spent my career from the branch to the white house and u.s. appeals of the d.c. circuit. i served of 17 circuits. each of them is a colleague and a friend. a judge must be independent and

city council might take up the issue. laura anthony, abc 7 news. san francisco homeless crisis could be getting new funding. supporters turned in signatures today but a powerful business group is against hit. abc 7 news carolyn tyler has the details. >> reporter: today is the deadline to qualify for the november ballot. a confident that they have more than enough for their proposal to increase funding for homeless services. >> san francisco is ready for this. they're ready to turn around this crisis. >> reporter: the measure would raise $300 million a year, half going to permanent housing including constructions and rental subsidies, at least 25% for menial health and substance abuse. the city spent 300 bucks a year on the prices and now the

support would double. this new pot of money would come from half a percent. the chamber of commerce is opposed and saying the city already collects $600 million in gross receipts and taxes from local businesses. >> now you are going raise another $300 million on the $600 million that's already paid. that's only going to be paid by a handful of san francisco taxpayers. now people make decisions about where they're going to keep their businesses. >> kristen evans own the book smith on hayes street. she believes large corporations that receive tax cuts from the trump's administration can afford to give back to a plan she thinks will make a difference. >> it is a sensible solution. it is not about throwing away money. it is not about throwing money, it is about using our funds in a better way. >> reporter: evans says there are business organizations that

eight down and five to go in a rescue mission in the cave in thailand. they have been trapped for two weeks now. >> four boys and the coach remaining inside still waiting to be saved. elizabeth hur has the latest. >> reporter: two rescues down and the boys so far are safe and sound. >> reporter: thai officials explained that divers completed the rescue about nine hours and

two hours faster than the day before. the eight boys now recovering in the hospital in an isolation newton away from germs. >> they'll be in that cave for a long time exposed to human waste and there could be skin breakdown and infections can be treated. >> reporter: authorities only confirming the boys are hungry but happy, adding that the staff at the hospital dedicated an entire floor to care for the floor and set up the emergency room with new equipment just to treat infections. the boys' families may eventually be allowed to visit through a glass partition. officials are calling the rescue using the buddy system successful. that system involved each boy making the track out of the cave accompanied to two divers, those divers are now resting in preparation for the next round.
