making news in america this morning, the new phase of the thailand cave rescue under way overnight. the four boys remaining trapped and new details emerging about those already rescued suffering from lung and blood infections unable to hug their parents or enjoy their favorite food. the new concern this morning and the challenge ahead for the boys who survived the adventure of their lives. president trump's supreme court nominee in the spotlight this morning as he heads to capitol hill. >> my judicial philosophy is straightforward. a judge must be independent. >> judge brett kavanaugh, a washington insider, his history on the bench, how it could reshape the court and american society for generations. a dramatic rescue after a fierce storm. a woman is pulled out of her submerged car. how she was able to survive

underwater for so long. those stories, plus a warning for airline passengers. something else in the cabin is getting more uncomfortable. >> ah, congratulations. and lesson learned. the grandfather who missed the special moment mistakenly recording his own reaction instead of that marriage proposal. good tuesday morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm maggie mama another boy has been rescued from the flooded cave where those soccer players have been trapped. >> overnight the last phase got under way to save the four remaining boys and their coach. most of the boys rescued so far are set to be recovering well although two have pneumonia. among their first words were i home.

now, some of them have already seen their parents albeit through a glass partition, and they could be released from the hospital within a week. this morning, the final push to free the remaining soccer players and their coach. >> many people are coming. >> reporter: most of the 12 boys are now free described in good spirits, but some are suffering health complications. doctors say two of them possibly have a lung infection and two others may have blood infections. but doctors say the players have strong immune systems because they're athletes. the rescued boys will be hospitalized for at least seven days and can only see their parents through a glass wall pending blood tests. >> people who work in infection control always like to quarantine people until they have a full understanding of not only what's going on with the patient but what's going on with the people who are interacting with that patient. but, again, in all likelihood their medical condition infectiouswise is nothing that their family needs to be worried about. >> reporter: their ordeal started 19 days ago when members of the wild boars soccer team ventured a mile and a half into

the cave as part of a team building exercise but treacherous monsoon rains flooded the passageway choking off their exit. and for the boys who have little or no swimming experience, yet alone cave diving experience, getting them out is a difficult task. the divers implemented a buddy system to escort each of the boys out. a lead diver tethered to each boy carries their oxygen tank. the rear diver helps navigate them through the twisting maze and tight underwater passages. abc's matt gutman is in thailand and shows us what the conditions are like in a nearby cave. >> some of these passageways are so narrow you kind of just have to scoot on your butt or crawl to get through. imagine doing this underwater. >> reporter: once outside the wn ere ane opicoprsringth ta hospiy

the ordeal could have lasting effects on the boys. >> they'll be hypervigilant. they may have nightmares. they may be fearful. they may regress a bit in their behavior. some of them may actually get a little bit depressed. they'll avoid certain circumstances. they probably won't like enclosed spaces and they'll need support through that. >> reporter: one of the survivors turned 16 during his time in the cave. his uncle tells us the family had gotten him a birthday cake and they hope to celebrate when the entire team is safe. and hopefully that will be pretty soon. the doctors say all of the boys are eating bland foods. they can't eat anything spicy yet even though they have been requesting a favorite kind of thai fried rice. and some of the rescued boys are actually still wearing sunglasses to help them adjust to all that light. we're going to take an in-depth look at today's rescue efforts and the conditions of the boys on a special edition of "20/20"

tonight at 9:00 p.m. eastern time, 8:00 central. we turn now to the other big story this morning, president trump nominating conservative judge brett kavanaugh to the supreme court. the announcement has already sparked a partisan showdown over abortion rights as kavanaugh heads to capitol hill today. abc's stephanie ramos has more on his track record both on and off the bench. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: hey, maggie, good morning. after more than a week of buildup, the closely guarded secret is out. the president has announced his supreme court justice nominee who may face an uphill battle as he tries to get confirmed. president trump in a prime time television event at the white house announced judge brett kavanaugh as his second u.s. supreme court justice nominee less than two years into his presidency. >> mr. president, i am grateful to you and i'm humbled by your confidence in me. >> reporter: kavanaugh, a conservative choice serving key positions in the bush white house and the independent

counsel on ken starr's team investigating bill clinton. later having second thoughts about whether presidents should be subjected to prosecution and investigations. a stance that could be a big deal if the supreme court ever has to rule on any actions resulting from the russia investigation. but a major question still lingers, the future of roe v. wade, legalized abortion, kavanaugh highlighting the achievements of the women in his life while also trying to clear up any misconceptions about what he may do to current law. >> a judge must interpret statutes as written, and a judge must interpret the constitution as written informed by history and tradition and precedent. >> reporter: activists protesting his nomination on the court steps. [ chanting ] democratic senators also there. >> president trump did exactly what he said he was going to do,

he has appointed someone who will not protect a woman's right to make decisions about her life, her health care, her reproductive freedom. >> reporter: kavanaugh said last night he would meet with senators today, already trying to win or his confirmation hearings, which are bound to be a battle between republicans and democrats. maggie and kendis, back over to you. >> all right, we already see it playing out there at the courts. our thanks to stephanie ramos. in the meantime, another federal judge has rejected the trump administration's effort to detain immigrant families for longer periods of time. the judge's ruling keeps in place the so-called flores settlement, which prohibits the government from keeping children in immigration detention centers for more than 20 days. the government has acknowledged it will not meet today's deadline to reunite more than 100 children under the age of 5 with their parents. only about half are back with their families. in some cases the parents of the children have already been deported.

a dramatic rescue in arizona after a woman's car ended up in a canal during a rainstorm. rescue crews in mesa found her car totally submerged with her still trapped inside. a driver says when he opened the door, he felt her grab his arm and then he pulled her to the surface. a firefighter says the woman was able to breathe thanks to an air pocket. >> it's the only explanation we have. typically firefighters don't go underwater unless they have scuba equipment, but this was one of those operations that, you know, you do what it takes. >> the woman was able to call for help on her cell phone before sinking. now, let's take a look at the weather for your tuesday morning. so whether it's a tropical storm or hurricane, chris will be whipping up rough surf and dangerous rip currents along the east coast from the carolinas to the jersey shore. otherwise the storm is not expected to directly impact the

uniteds at all. anloing at today's temperatures, 70s in the pacific northwest. much warmer across montana and down into colorado and utah. chicago and denver will be topping out at 85. while new orleans and atlanta and new york will reach 92. boston will be warmer than miami. wow. coming up, another part of air travel that's getting even more uncomfortable. and also ahead, why a state of emergency has now been declared because of this algae that seems to be taking over. and a new warning out about a way thieves are swiping your amazon deliveries right off your doorstep.

economy and causing some health concerns. the governor there, rick scott, blames the army corps of engineers for the blooms because of water discharges from lake okeechobee. some compare the smell to opening a bag of moldy bread. an american tourist celebrating her wedding anniversary has been killed in mexico city. police say 27-year-old tatiana mirutenko was hit by a stray bullet while leaving a restaurant. authorities believe the gunman was targeting someone at a nearby bar. in a statement mirutenko's employer in san francisco called her a bright, passionate, rising star. civil unrest in haiti has prompted the u.s. state department to issue a travel warning. nonessential u.s. embassy personnel are now being given the option to leave haiti because of the ongoing violence which is being linked to the government's attempts to raise fuel prices. with the rise of online shopping, the theft of packages on doorsteps has become all too common, but a case in ohio has a different twist to it.

a cleveland man says the amazon driver who delivered his package stole the item just moments later. john tran received a notice with a picture about his delivery, but when he got home, the package was gone, and then he checked the security video. >> i'm worried about some random person coming down the street grabbing my package, not the guy who is actually delivering it. >> well, according to a recent survey, tran is among 30% of americans who have had their packages stolen from outside their home. he received a full refund. the driver was fired. now costco is revamping its food court menu to appeal to health conscious shoppers. the first casualty, though, you see it there, the polish hot dog which is being replaced by healthier choices such as fruit bowls and organic burgers. attention, airline passengers, if you think rest rooms on planes are shrinking you're 100% right. airlines are reportedly making new efforts to reduce the size of bathrooms to fit more seats. they say the new rest rooms are only a few inches smaller but

investigators say on the night of june 27th in a sleepy suburb north of atlanta. >> i don't know how long she's been dead in the bathtub. >> reporter: a family friend making the horrific discovery calling 911. >> there is blood all over the place. there's like sharp things, a broken mirror like someone broke into this house. >> reporter: the killer stealing her kia suv according to police who found it days later in an apartment complex about ten miles away. thomasson's family is now desperate for clues. >> we're here today to ask for your help. our mom was such a loving member of this community. >> reporter: sandy springs police now offering the highest crimestopper reward in the city's history. >> we want this guy bad. the $100,000 that's being put forth i think indicates to the public how serious we are about solving this case. >> a witness says he saw a man dropping off the victim's car at the apartment complex. police do not believe he lives there. a newlywed woman is recovering from a zip line accident that left her husband dead.

authorities say the israeli couple collided on a zip line in honduras during an excursion from a cruise ship. now, officials said the woman became stuck on the line and her husband slammed right into her. he died at the hospital. she's now getting treatment back here in the u.s. actor johnny depp has been slapped with a lawsuit over an alleged punching incident. he's accused of hitting a manager on the set of the upcoming movie "city of lies." a lawsuit claims depp punched the man in the ribs after being told to wrap up shooting. the suit claims depp smelled of alcohol. if you're struggling to get your baby to sleep through the night, a new study offers some food for thought. researchers found babies who were given solid food after three months slept longer than babies who were exclusively breastfed and woke up less frequently. but women have long been encouraged to wait six months before giving their baby solid foods, and doctors say nutrients from breast milk or formula are crucial. as always consult your own doctor about what's right for you.

in new jersey this is police body cam video that shows two officers saving a young child's life. the 2-year-old fell unconscious in a swimming pool. one officer then starts to flip her over, firmly slaps her on her back to force water out of her lungs so that she can breathe. >> not only was it a breath for her, it was a breath for us as well too where we could say, okay, she's in stable condition. she's going to make it. >> the little girl was treated at the hospital and is now home with her family. >> a grateful family at that. well, up next in "the pulse," a police pursuit that gives new meaning to on the lam. also ahead, the shocking moment a tree branch nearly falls on a couple on their wedding day. we'll hear what they're saying this morning. plus, a grandfather who accidentally filmed himself instead of the big moment that was happening behind him. was happening behind him. well, here's to first dates! you look amazing.

beach that was impacted. two people live above this bar. they have lost their homes. and then people on either side of the bar have also been displaced. here's a look at the fire. firefighters say it appeared to be coming from the walls. they had to rip out walls to get to it. this started at 11:30 last night. the bar was open, people were inside. the bartender described for us what happened. >> i was bar tending downstairs and people were outside. they came in screaming there was a fire. i came outside and looked at the building. it was on fire from the side and smoke coming out the top. just got everybody out of the building and stood there and watched it burn. >> he also lives above the bar so he's now headed to a friend's house for a place to stay. the fire captain told us a total of nine people have din displaced by the fire, including five tourists staying in an air

bnb. one firefighter suffered a cut and was taken to the hospital. at this point, they say the cause of this fire is still under investigation. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thanks, amy. investigators are looking into what started a two-alarm fire in berkeley around 10:15 last night at the old ace hardware building at university avenue and walnut street. surrounding buildings have been evacuated and no reports of anybody getting hurt. >> now, a live desk update. >> nine down, four more to go. what could be the final rescue mission at a cave in thailand is under way right now. and this morning, divers rescued the ninth boy. three more boys and their soccer coach are still in the cave. we do want to show you a live look at the hospital in thailand where the rest of the team is recovering. doctors say two boys have pneumonia, two have possible blood infections but the good news is they say the athletes are strong and will recover. >> the governor says a
