a live look from sky 7. tonight fire fighters are frying to stop a fast-moving wildfire. from spreading towards buildings. good evening. >> thank you for joining us. more on the story sky map 7 showing the exact area in san jose where the flames are burn the right now. it is in santa teresa county park in the foothills of south san jose. tonight there are evacuations. >> get to abc 7 news reporter, who is on the phone with us, at the scene, amanda, what are you learning? >> we know that the fire first sparked this afternoon. right now grown to nearly 90 acres. and it is 5% contained. we know that the fire has prompted some evacuations including the camp inside the county park. and the nearby ibm facility. we have some good news. right now we are told that no structures have burned. and there have been no injuries reported. crews are trying to hold the fire at burnell road. a fire spokesperson says if that

does not happen and the crew can't do that, that it could stand to spread to 300 to 400 acres. but we should know whether they were able to do that within the next 30 minutes. but because of that high threat they're saying this is a high response fire. right now between 120 and 150 firefighters from several a yaenss are on scene. it is hot out here. the wind are blowing just a bit. southwest direction. we asked whether there was any connection to the fire burning in morgan hills south of here. we are told that would be a miracle if something, spark flew from there here. since again those wind are blowing in the southwest direction. we're going to keep at it. keep watching this development. speaking with neighbors here as we continue to learn more about the fire and see kind of that, activity go to putting it all out here in san jose. >> okay. amanda, thank you very much. cal fire says crews have now stopped the forward sprifd a

grass fire that broke out this afternoon in morgan hill. sky map 7 technology shows the the fire broke out off hale avenue between miramonte and live oak avenues. so far charred 40 acres. couple of small structures. the cause of the fire is under investigation. let's go now to our meteorologist for latest on the conditions on beth fire lines. >> yeah, dan, start with morgan hill fire first. hot there. 92 degrees now. humidity, 23%. challenge here for firefighters will be that north wind. gusting to 19 miles an hour. really dry air in that vicinity. south san jose area, it is warm. 86 degrees. relative hoouumidity. 26%. wind is lighter there. as you know fires can create their winds. out of the north-northwest. 7 miles an hour. >> thank you. you know right now, fires burning also near the griffith observatory in los angeles. see the thick plumes of smoke

near griffith park. the fire started after 2:00. so far burned around 2 acres, show, still small. and we are told that it does not pose immediate threats to any structure. >> look at all the smoke. well, tonight the pedicab community is mourning the loss of one of its own. >> we learned that kevin manning died after the hit-and-run accident late last month. he is being called one of the most belove the members of the pedicab community. >> kate larsen is live in san francisco with more on the man so well respected. kate. >> well, dan, kristen, two weeks ago. kevin manning was driving his pedicab with a family on board here at intersection of battery when he was hit by a car. take a look. a photo of kevin that his friend and co-workers gave me. they say his family took him off life support. and that he died last night at san francisco jen rgeneral. he was 65 years old. he did have severe brain injuries because of the accident

that took place at battery on june 27th at 4:15 in the afternoon. sfpd said kevin was in the cab in the bike lane when the alleged hit-and-run driver drove into the lane hit him and took off. kevin had been leasing a pedicab from cambrio taxi six years. i spoke to one of the owners of the come of pane a company and co-workers this afternoon >> always had a smile for me. he had a granddaughter. always talk about his granddaughter. he, yeah, a really wonderful person. we are, really devastated. >> kevin avenue death is preventible. beyond that, if, you are out there in your car, be patient. you know, at the end of the day, you getting wherever you are going, 30 second faster isn't worth somebody else's life. >> of now, sfpd released surveillance iffages of the suspected hit-and-run car and driver. a gold honda civic. and it would have front end damage from the accident.

dozens of family stage what they called a play date protest today. in oakland. march from the library to the alameda county sheriff's office. to deliver a letter demanding his office stop working with federal immigration officials. a sheriff's office spokesperson denied the group's claims. saying it follows state sanctuary law and policy. and does not do immigration enforcement or, or collaborate with ice. >> well, this is the news that people little really all around the world have been waiting desperately for. the 12 boys and soccer coach who've spent more than two weeks trapped in a cave in thailand, are finally all safe tonight. thailand's navy seal, celebrated with this facebook post. it read we are not sure if this is a miracle, a science or what. all of the 13 will, wild boars are back out of the cave. doctors are keeping a close eye on the boys of course. right now their parents are only able to see their sons through a glass window at the hospital. the hospital says at least two are suffering from pneumonia.

they're concerned about them. last week, one thai navy seal did die preparing for the rescue operation. now, abc news will air a special edition of "20/20" tonight on the thailand cave rescues. triumph in thailand airs tonight at 9:00 p.m. here on abc 7. >> a man faces charges this evening in connect, with the murders of a mother and daughter. prosecutors said they filed charges against dan they williams. he was arrested in oakland several days after thursday's murders. 55-year-old scott and her daughter, 28-year-old, tide in the shooting. investigators say, williams knew the victims, he is due in court tomorrow. >> now, it was 30 years ago today an outrageous execution-style murder of a cop that shocked the police community took place. a mushder with few leads and abc 7 news reporter vic lee in the newsroom now with a follow-up on the disturbing case.

vic. >> reporter: dan, follow the story since the murder. walnut creek's coldest case has been a controversial one that, at the time, created bat blood between two police departments. one thing. everyone involved in the investigation agrees, this targeted killing. found slummed behind the wheel of the blue corvette. shot, execution-style. it has been an open investigation for 30 years. i covered the story before on the 20th anniversary of the murder. garnier having sunday night dinner with his parents at their home. his father told investigators his son left abruptly relieving two phone calls. one from a woman. garnier drove off to the parking lot. this is how the murder scene looked 20 years ago. garnier was a vice cop leading the investigation. walnut creek police. some believe he had been set up

perhaps by a rogue cop. someone who worked with him in vice. one reason, he was shot with an am 2380. a dozen san francisco officers came under scrutiny. tests on their guns were negative. still others believed he was killed by prostitutes or drug dealers. captain jay hill assigned to the case. >> people think he was getting too close to something. >> more than 500 interviews later, still no murder weapon. no motive. no suspect. until that is, 20 years later in 2008. police identified a fingerprint on the corvette. >> new technology has resulted in the fingerprint being identified as belonging to katherine. >> she was serving time for a drug offense in florida but lived in the east bay at the time of the murder. police flew to florida several times to interview her. >> wouldn't go as far to say she confessed. but she did, give us enough to, to, lead to us believe that she,

regional transportation measure approved by voters in all nine bay area counties is in jeopardy. a lawsuit filed to stop it. caroline tyler live with the details. caroline. >> well, the measure would raise bridge tolls not only here at the bay bridge, that you see behind me but on all the except the golden gate. as you said the lawsuit could put the brakes on that. regional measure three, would raise about $5 billion to tackle bay area congestion. the money would come from hiking bridge tolls, three bucks phased in over the next few years. the mayors of the three largest

cities back the measure. 55% of the voters did too. now this lawsuit filed by the taxpayers association claims the toll hike is actually a tax, not a fee. and needed 2/3 majority to pass. three bay area commuters point out the bulk of the money jen rated would go to public transportation projects. like ferries and new bart cars. we talked to the taxpayer association's lawyer, via skype. >> none of the money is being spent on bridges. some of the money is spent on road improvements. a lot of the road improvements are not -- not even indirectly connected to bridges. >> but backers say the mass transit improvements will take the load off the bridges. nearly three dozen projects could now be stalled. >> this obstructionism is, is just not going to be helpful to bay area commuters. nor to the economy. >> the bay area count still which is come the prized of 325 of the region's largest

employers, also hopes the laupt suit fails. >> i think it is unfortunate to howard jarvis association chose to sue against improving bay area traffic and transportation conditions. and instead they're suing to, to make things worse. >> and, the first dollar hike on the bridges is slated for january. but again, with that lawsuit, the impact is unclear. li >> all right, thank you so much. the nation's largest airline is getting on board with the movement to ban plastic straws. that has been gaining momentum around the bay and country. american airlines says it will stop using plastic straws, drink stirrers and flatware and use biodegradeable alternatives. american says plastic will be replaced this month at airport lounges and on planes by november. last may, alaska airlines

announced it will stop using plastic and citrus picks. >> we heard people trying to sneak strange things past airport security. this might be a first. can you tell what is hidden in that checked bag? it's a python, dan, a python. a security scan spotted the snake hidden inside an external hard drive. the python was discovered sunday in the luggage of a man boarding a plane in miami. >> he was fined and not allowed on the flight and neither was the snake. >> nice try. >> what is he thinking, come of on? >> if you are a fan of exotic cars, the following video hard to watch. a man admiring a pair of lamborghinis last week in st. louis was taking cell phone video of the cars. take a look at the van in the background. right there. it pulled away from the gas station with the pump attached to the van's gas tank. this is the result. sprayed fuel into the engine bay of the blue lamborghini.

car went up in flames. $200 touch in smoke. no one was hurt. the red lamborghini not damaged. oops. >> i always worry about doing that. >> didn't cause a problem. forgot one time. >> your car was okay. you are okay. >> can you get your car repaired without having to go to the repair shop? >> good question. michael? >> what if i told you about this three weeks ago i think. yeah. consumer reports recently made news. we reported it here. when it recommended new model 3 only after the automaker fixed a braking problem. the consumer reports discovered during its rigorous testing. what could be an automotive first. tesla fixed the problem through what is called an over the air update. consumer reports takes a closer look. this emerging technology. look under the hood of many new cars and it is clear current car technology its based more on computers than combustion. add to that around 70% of car

brands now offer some kind of wireless data connection. many of them are able to send over the air, or, ota, updates for things like, adding satellite radio channels. or, updating navigation maps. but tesla's recent over the air update made an improvement to the car's braking system. although the way this adjustment was made, was unique, many vehicles today, need repairs. especially when they're involved in a safety recall. every year, automakers and the federal government, issue hundreds of recalls. and because one in four recalled vehicles on the road has not been fixed there are likely million of car owners who may not realize their vehicles need repair. so, could over the air updates be the future of car repair? >> what cars are really becoming computer on wheels. there is a lot of hardware. a lot of things are software controlled. those things can be updated over the air. it comes to really hardware

stuff. think, suspension. springs, transmissions. a lot of that hardware, you are still going to-to bring it back to the dealer. >> consumer reports says the prospect of this technology could be pretty great. being able to receive an over the air update that would not require you to bring your car into a dealership, could save owners time and automakers money. so, how far off is this scenario? >> several automakers have this capability. and more on their way. but there are risks. because the while they could update your car do make it belter they could potentially have a mistake. they need to clearly communicate changes to the drivers. something changes in the way you use your car. you've need to understand that. >> you can check to see if your car has had any recalls online by using consumer reports recall tracker tool. here's how it works. enter your vehicle's year, make, model. and then you get a list of recalls, along with information on huh to get your car fixed for free. now i have a link.

give us up close access to one of the most famous spots in l.a. the movie studio has a plan to build an aerial tram to the iconic hollywood sign. the tram which would be named the hollywood skyway would take people from the studio lot to viewing area at the sign. it is still in the planning phases. still need approval from the city of los angeles and the parks department. >> well this is out of this world. tonight there is music traveling from saturn to one of the most mysterious moons. listen. >> isn't that weird? the eerie audio recorded by nasa's cassini spacecraft last year. only released recently. what you heard was a vibrating column of plasma passing from the icy moon of anceladus to saturn. all of this made possible by a never-before disdiscovered magnetic field connecting saturn to its moon. what scientists say is most amazing its the massive planet
