the air and new details on the injuries he suffered. the outrage over the pentagon spending $10,000 on a toilet seat cover for this military plane. and the glamorous instagram model attacked by a shark during a photo shoot. she shares her terrifying story. we do say good wednesday morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm linsey davis in for diane macedo. we begin in wisconsin. an explosion has leveled several buildings forcing a major evacuation in one city. >> drone video shot moments after the explosion shows the size of the debris field. at least two first responders have been injured as several fires turned this small city into what looked like a war zone. a massive gas explosion rocking the small city of sun prairie, wisconsin, near madison. >> we felt this boom, and i thought something landed on our roof. it was so loud and our house shook.

>> reporter: raging flames lighting up the night sky. the smoke seen for miles. >> that's the gas main. >> reporter: several buildings destroyed and cars on fire. the streets littered with debris. >> there was this big boom, and it knocked me to the ground, and i felt it. like it took the breath out of my body. ran outside and i saw a mushroom cloud. >> everyone evacuated including these people rushed out of a nursing home. police say a contract struck a gas main. the explosion came as firefighters were looking for the source of that leak. >> the smell was extremely strong. very, very strong. >> reporter: the palace site a popular area filled with bars, restaurants and other businesses. one witness says the force of the explosion appeared to lift the building across the street off its foundation. and we're told that the leak is now contained. sun prairie city hall located about a block away from the

explosion is closed today. overseas right now, president trump is turning up the pressure on u.s. allies at the annual nato summit. he is in brussels demanding that europe pay more for its own defense and the summit got off to a tense start just moments ago. abc's karen travers is there. good morning, karen. >> reporter: good morning, linsey and kendis. president trump comes to nato for the second year in a row with a very tough message. call it the 2% push. the president says the united states is paying more than its fair share for nato and european countries are not. and he says they're the ones that benefit more from nato's protection. nato members have pledged to spend 2% of their gdp on defense spending. na nato says that's progress being made but the president says it's not happening quickly enough. now, european allies are saying that this is all very concerning for them because it look from the alliance's decades long allegiance to european nations

and cozying up to russian president vladimir putin. this morning the president acknowledged that it could be a tense couple of days here for him at nato. standing with the secretary-general, jens stoltenberg. >> so i think the secretary-general likes trump. he may be the only one, but that's okay with me. >> we will make the summit a success. >> reporter: the president said that -- the president now knowing, of course, that he's coming to this meeting and not having a lot of things happening on the sidelines. he's not sitting down with the leaders of france or germany or canada who, of course, there is a lot of tension right now between the president and those leaders. yesterday you had the european council president say that america, mr. trump, needs to appreciate its allies. he said they don't have many. kendis, linsey. >> all right, thanks so much, karen. meanwhile, the trump administration's trade dispute with china is ramping up. more on that later on this half hour. turning now to the battle over the supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh, we're

now hearing from one of the senators who could make or break kavanaugh's confirmation. the big issue is abortion rights. abc's stephanie ramos is here with the latest. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: kendis and linsey, good morning. even though we've heard from supreme court justice nominee judge brett kavanaugh, talk about his respect for settled law and precedent, some lawmakers aren't buying it and still have their doubts about what laws this judge could overturn if confirmed as a justice. president trump's supreme court justice nominee judge brett kavanaugh is now on to his next challenge, trying to win over lawmakers on capitol hill before his confirmation hearings. most republicans are pleased with the conservative judge. >> not only would you want him to be a judge if you're kind of a reasonable person, i think you would also like him to be your neighbor. >> reporter: but the road to his confirmation may be tough. senate democrats already out in full force pushing against him. democrats say the president nominated him because of a past argument where he questioned the

merits of president writing, the indictment and trial of a sitting president would cripple the federal government rendering it unable to function with >> judge kavanaugh, if he is a justice, would be the swing vote in deciding whether he can pardon himself, get out of jail free pass. >> reporter: another big issue, abortion rights. will kavanaugh be the swing vote to overturn the 1973 decision to legalize abortion? republican senator susan collins who has been seen as possibly siding with senate democrats says kavanaugh passes her litmus test. >> any judge who demonstrated hostility to roe would not be a person that i could vote for. i've not seen that with judge kavanaugh. >> reporter: a lot of attention is being placed on republican

senators susan collins and lisa murkowski. both are abortion rights supporters. senator collins says that issue as well as other cases is something she'll talk about with kavanaugh when they meet one-on-one. kendis, linsey, back over to you. >> the charm offensive begins in d.c. stephanie, thank you. a frightening scene in los angeles as a large brush fire broke out near the famous griffith observatory. 2,000 people were evacuated as a precaution. crews quickly contained most of the fire. several vehicles were damaged or destroyed. but no injuries reported. well, time now for a look at your weather for this wednesday morning. a baby has been killed and dozens of other people are injured after a tornado hit a small town in northwestern north dakota. 122 buildings are destroyed. in arizona a massive dust storm raced across the southern part of the state. the wall of dust was a mile high. it was part of a storm system that packed torrential rain and hurricane-force winds.

we're back with a remarkable story of survival. all 11 people on board this plane that crashed into the side of a mountain in southeast alaska have survived. most suffered only minor injuries.

the pilot alerted authorities and coast guard helicopters were able to hoist everyone to safety despite the thick fog. >> you know, they were all able to walk on their own power and because of that, it enabled us to fit more folks into the aircraft as opposed to if we had to have them all on stretchers. >> the plane was on a charter flight at the time. investigators are looking into what caused the crash with engine failure a possibility. and we're learning more about the crash involving george clooney in sardinia, italy. he was reportedly going about 60 miles an hour when his scooter slammed into a car that crossed his path. video shows clooney flying through the air hitting his head on the car's windshield. luckily he was wearing a helmet but "people" magazine reports he did suffer some trauma to his pelvis and will need to check in with his doctor over the next few weeks. and here at home, another frightening collision played out in new jersey at this railroad crossing. a bus appeared to get stuck on the tracks and a commuter train could not stop in time. one person on the bus suffered

nonlife-threatening injuries. the pharmaceutical giant pfizer is rolling back its plan to raise drug prices. in a statement pfizer's ceo announced the change came after extensive discussion with president trump. the president tweeted that price increases by pfizer and other drug companies were taking advantage of the poor. >> and today's 7/11. that means the convenience store by the same name is celebrating by offering free slurpees. the company expects to give out 9 million of them today, but don't expect to fill your big gulp cups. only small slurpees are free. the featured flavor today, cap'n crunch berry. >> get your slurpee. >> it's good for breakfast. coming up, a bear shows up at a busy beach causing quite the scare. and also ahead, new details about the 12 boys who were rescued from that cave in thailand and the near disaster moments after they were pulled out. and later, it has happened again, another man clinging to

maybe you should ask your doctor? go to myeczemaexposed.com to learn more. we are back with an unexpected visitor on the sand of this popular beach near vancouver, canada. a black bear was raiding picnic baskets and coolers. >> the first sighting was last week. the beach is closed until the bear can be found and relocated but for now you can have my picnic basket, i'd say. turning now to that cave rescue in thailand, doctors say the 12 boys and their soccer coach are in good health after their dangerous trek to safety. >> as you would imagine, the boys are malnourished and several have lung infections, but otherwise they are okay. we're now hearing that one of the boys fluent in english acted as an interpreter helping them communicate with divers. abc's elizabeth hur has more on the crisis that unfolded in the final moments of that rescue. >> reporter: an incredible ending to a mission that seemed impossible just days ago.

all 12 boys and their soccer coach rescued by a team of elite divers guiding them through these dark and narrow passageways, and on this final day of dramatic rescues, thumbs up from these navy s.e.a.l. divers and medic, the last group to get out of the cave. >> how many of you? >> 13. >> 13. >> reporter: these 13 now at a hospital in an isolation unit. their road to recovery beginning as new details emerge about just how lucky they are to be alive. abc news learning the group got out just in the nick of time. abc's matt gutman reports from thailand. >> after those navy s.e.a.l.s and the other rescuers got those four boys, the coach and those four thai navy s.e.a.l.s out of the cave, other rescuers and about about 80 or 90 thai navy s.e.a.l.s were in there picking up all their equipment when suddenly that main pump that had been taking out hundreds of millions of gallons over the past 2 1/2 weeks gave way. and the seals and other rescuers had to flee for their lives. >> reporter: disaster averted

with thailand and the world now rooting for these boys' speedy recovery. as for the coach, he has been both criticized for taking the boys into the cave and also praised for keeping them alive. well, it turns out while they were still trapped inside, the boys' parents wrote him a letter writing in part, do not blame yourself. we are not angry. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. >> thanks so much, elizabeth. the navy s.e.a.l.s posted a letter online thanking the teams involved in the rescue saying, quote, the united force of humanity was at work. the world will never forget this rescue. hollywood producers are already looking into making a movie about it. >> no doubt. a man seen harassing a woman in chicago for wearing a puerto rico t-shirt is now charged with assault and disorderly conduct. it happened at a forest preserve where the woman had asked a group of people to leave a picnic shelter that she had rented. now the video also shows a police officer standing by and not responding. >> you should not be wearing that in the united states of

america. >> okay. officer, i feel highly uncomfortable. can you please grab him? >> are you an american citizen? >> please, officer. >> the officer should have stepped in, and he should have done something. and i think that's the reason that we're here today. >> well, other cops finally arrived and arrested the man. the officer who did not help is on desk duty pending an investigation. well, it's happened again. there's new video of someone clinging to a speeding car on a highway, and again it happened in south florida. the person who shot this video says that car was going more than 65 miles an hour. last month you remember this hood ornament. a florida man told police that he and his girlfriend had been arguing when she drove off with him still on the hood. a well-known instagram model is recovering from a shark attack in the bahamas. katarina zarutskie was vacationing with her boyfriend and his family when she had his father snap photos of her posing among about a dozen nurse sharks. that's when one of them suddenly

hayward, concord at 60. vacaville, 62. most of us in the mid to upper 50s. let gett wh>> hi, mike. this is on the northbound side of the 680 just before that 101 merge near king road. no slowdown yet.ed on the scene. sounds like they are blocking the two right lanes. an eye on that and hopefully a small fire. get it out quickly. this is the bay bridge toll plaza. no stack-up in the cash lane. an hour to go before the metering lights come on. still watching a fire close to homes in san jose. >> the fire started yesterday afternoon near santa teresa county park. matt keller is in san jose for us this morning. matt? >> reporter: good morning, jessica and reggie. you got cal fire out here keeping an eye on things as they just are going up the hill here.

you can see that there are a lot of dry conditions here in santa teresa county park. they're making sure that everything is okay overnight.ren the flames. conditions were dry, windy and hot at the time. cal fire helped out and had full air support trying to stop this fire from spreading. >> you know, i don't think i have ever come this close to a fire before. i'm pretty sure almost all of the san jose fire department is here. it's scary. it really is. >> reporter: by 7:15, the last update. firefighters had it 85% contained and burned about 75 acres. the good news, no injuries reported and no structures burned. matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. meanwhile in morgan on alert for flare-ups after a fast moving grassfire. this is what it looked like at
