years since their lives were changed forever. it was a powerful day in court. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. many of the victims were quite emotional. >> leslie brinkley was there and she joins us from sacramento. leie? >>maine. they were all victims of the golden state killer back in the 1970s, and they told me they wanted to see the man accused of attacking them in person. >> super intense. just seeing the back of his head, it was really hard. >> reporter: -- >> the wounds heal. >> reporter: a sisterhood of women marching into a courtroom to confront the man that irrevocably changed their lives forever. 72-year-old joseph james deangelo emerged into a caged area of the court for a brief hearing. he kept his back to the victims as attorneys addressed the

judge. >> we would ask for another court date of september 5th. >> reporter: and then it was over, in less than two minutes. deangelo, back to his jail cell. >> the emotion was so intense for me. adbut for me i thought to of his myself this is the man that came into my bedroom when i was 13 years old and i haven't known who that was for over 40 years. how could you come into a kid's room like that and do that sort of thing. how can you attack a child? it was harder than i thought it would be. >> reporter: the man accused of being the golden state killer and east area rapist was arrested in april after investigators used a genealogy website to link him to dna at crime scenes in northern and southern california in the 1970s and '80s. the string of attacks included 12 murders and nearly 50 rapes. >> right now i'm feeling very emotional. a lot of anxiety. >> are you going to come to more hearings? >> i hope i'm going to be going

to trial. >> does it give you a little peace that you have seen him today? >> yes, it helps. i mean it's always helped just knowing that he's behind bars and he's not a threat to any of my sister survivors anymore. that means the world to all of us. >> reporter: deangelo will be back in court on september the 5th here in sacramento, and many of those victims you just heard from, they say they will be back as well. reporting live in sacramento, leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> leslie, thanks very much. there is now a reward of up to $5,000 to catch whoever wounded a 3-year-old boy in oakland last night. the latest crime has the city beefing up patrols. eric thomas is live at oakland city hall with more on this story. eric. >> reporter: dan, this could have been so much worse if that young man had been hit by an attack bullet instead of bullet fragments in the face as he was. as you mentioned, oakland police are redirecting resources and putting extra officers in high-crime areas in hopes of cutting back on some of this gun violence.

>> when a child this young is struck by a bullet, it strikes us all. >> reporter: the city of oakland provided this video of mayor libby schaaf answering questions about the shooting. evidence of the gunfire is still visible the next day. the back window of this car blown out. what appears to be a bullet hole through this metal sign post, and nervous neighbors who did not want to talk on camera. it's just those neighbors police are appealing to. >> we know that community members were there. they witnessed this incident. there's information that can be provided to us to help us further our investigation. we're asking for community members to come forward. >> reporter: police say they're still looking for suspects and a motive in the shooting that took place here on 80th avenue near holly street. witnesses who didn't want to go on camera told us that people were crowded into the street last night for a memorial for an 18-year-old murder victim who was killed june 29th when at least one shooter fired multiple shots from behind this fence, hitting a car with an innocent

child inside. >> a young 3-year-old child was in the car with his mother when a round hit that vehicle and scrap metal from that round injured the child. >> reporter: the shrapnel wounds to the face are not believed to be life threatening but there likely will be emotional trauma. that's why oakland police dropped by with a teddy bear for the young victim, hoping to ease the pain. mayor schaaf says it won't stop there. >> we are increasing our law enforcement presence, but we also are increasing opportunities for young people to be positively engaged and supported. >> reporter: those are prevention efforts like reinstituting midnight basketball, which they have done this summer as well as friday nights in the park. they also have life coaches out on the street in hopes of diverting young people away from some of this violence. as far as the investigation goes, police don't have much. they can't say whether it's gang related or not. they can't say for sure whether it is directly related to the

memorial service that we just told you about. but the investigation is under way and they're trying to develop these clues and they hope someone that saw something or knows something will come forward. in oakland, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> eric, thank you. investigators are looking into a construction accident in palo alto. one man is dead. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen has the latest. >> reporter: at the crossroads community church in palo alto, investigators spent hours today looking into a devastating accident that left a construction worker dead. >> we wanted to make sure that any evidence there at the scene that we wanted to preserve it for osha's investigation, because we knew they were going to come in later since this was an incident that happens at a work site. >> reporter: just before 9:00 this morning, palo alto police say a sergeant was flagged down by a co-worker of the victim. he quickly got out and tried to deliver cpr but the victim died at the scene as a result of his injuries. >> once the facts are gathered, investigators will determine if there were any violations of

california's workplace safety and health regulations. >> reporter: details are limited but it appears the victim became trapped underneath a bobcat vehicle. the work crew employed by r.c. paving according to cal osha was there to seal the parking lot. jake duckworth said he was the only person on site at the time of the accident besides the work crew. in a statement he said our hearts break for those who have lost a loved one in this event and our prayers are with them as they mourn. middlefield road between oregon expressway and marion avenue was back open by mid-afternoon. cal osha, the lead investigating agency, has up to six months to complete its report. r.c. paving did not return our request for comment. in palo alto, chris nguyen, abc seven news. we're learning more about an accident that caused a teslaplo

to boost production of its model 3 sedan. it happened outside of tesla's planting in fremont. bloomberg business week also reports another tesla employee was doing doughnuts with a forklift. tesla fired the forklift driver. tesla said in a statement, quote, nothing is more important than the safety of its employees. some parts of the bay area could see thunderstorms tonight, and of course that is creating some concern about high fire danger. let's get to abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya, we don't have that happen too often. >> no, we don't, and the concern is that the moisture that does fall from any thunderstorms that develop could evaporate and dry lightning could spark a fire or two. take a look at live doppler 7. right now you're seeing a little bit of high cloudiness due to the monsoon flow but there has be active wea deloped. some of that unstable air may be heading in that direction. this is the wettest of the computer models showing the

potential for later on tonight for us to see an isolated thunderstorm or two. i'll let you know how long the possibility of a thunderstorm or two will last coming right up. dan. >> okay, sandhya, thanks a lot. new at 5:00, pg&e and other california power companies must start following new guidelines today for shutting off power during disasters like wildfires. the california public utilities commission unanimously voted for these changes today. deenergizing electrical lines during wildfires can make it safer for firefighters to attack the flames, of course. it can also reduce the risk of the fire spreading. pg&e welcomes the decision in a statement saying, quote, we know how much our customers rely on electric service and would only consider temporarily turning off power in the special of safety and as a last resort during extreme weather conditions. a contra costa county facility housing dozens of i.c.e. detainees received a mostly positive review today from the mayor of richmond. tom butt toured the west county

detention facility located in his city. the mayor's visit came months after he first requested a tour following reports of mistreatment of detainees, but said he spoke with both male and female detainees and said the women were much more critical. >> they said some of the deputies are racist and they i think verbally abuse them. now, again, whether that's accurate or not, i don't know. i'm just telling you what they said. the male detainees told us that this was -- you know, if you've got to be detained, this is really a great place. >> he says the facility was clean and praised education programs that are offered there. today's visit comes just two days after the contra costa county sheriff announced that his office is cancelling its contract with i.c.e. at the jail. stay with us, more to come. a winery owner in the north bay is frustrated and fed up. >> we've had all five-star reviews except for one-star reviews which is the troll. >> she said that troll is targeting her business and she

a small mom and pop winery is taking on tech giant goog nell court today. charter oak winery claims that google refuses to take down negative reviews written by an online troll. we are live from the napa courthouse with the story. >> reporter: hey there, dan. this really is a case of david versus goliath. in this round google won getting the case dismissed. because these online comments have been so rude and lewd and inappropriate, that means the

winery's owner says she is not backing down. >> on what grounds did you want to dismiss? what's your case. >> reporter: google's legal aide had nothing to say. who does have a lot to say? lai laila. >> i'm really disappointed. the court wouldn't allow me to speak. >> reporter: as owner of the winery, she took google to court seeking $5,000 in damages for six months of negative comments, comparing her business to a toilet and much worse from someone she calls an online troll. >> worst wine i ever had, rubbery. tasted boxed. >> reporter: nearly all of the reviews are five star. the one-star reviews she believes are the same person using different aliases. >> this says my bottle of wine as the same finishing taste as a geriatric -- >> reporter: we can't repeat them on tv. she believes it violates google's guidelines. rules and guidelines if no one enforces them.

just say it's a free-for-all. >> reporter: those harassing k5u78 comments, between 30 and 50 of them, do not violate the review guide liens and suggested she have a great day. >> extremely inappropriate and that's why i'm going to court. >> reporter: with no other correspondence, laila said she had no other course but to take them to court. they got the case dismissed based on a rule where the commenter must be presenting. i asked if the online reviewer is a bully, what does she think of google. >> google is morally >> reporter: back out here live. we did reach out to google and did not receive a response. because you can take someone to small claims court a maximum of five times, she said she will continue to fight for herself and on behalf of other small business owners. a fund-raiser is set for this weekend for the 8-year-old girl thrust into the national spotlight in the so-called permit patty controversy.

jordan rogers wil a water stand at oakland's lake merritt at noon on saturday. several local businesses are providing the water and food, with all proceeds going into an education fund for rogers. the effort comes a month after a woman called police on the 8-year-old girl for not having a permit as she sold water near at&t park. marin county will appeal a court ruling that threatens to block its purchase of the san gentlemronimo golf course. the county has decided to fight a preliminary injunction issued by a judge last month which is preventing the county from completing the purchase of the course. supervisors voted to buy the property last november to convert it into public open space. critics say the county paid too much and reportedly rammed the deal through to please environmentalists. well, get ready to stop and smell the corpse flower. the conservator of flowers in san francisco says another one is getting ready to bloom. last summer one bloomed for three days, emitting what some

say is an enticingly atrocious odor of rotting meat. that's weird. didn't matter how bad it was, people waited in long lines to see it and smell it. the conservator says it is not clear when it will open up, but it is planning to stay open extra hours to accommodate the expected demand. we will keep you posted on this. people just love to go smell that flower. well, a build-a-bear frenzy across the country has become a safety concern. the company's pay you generated an overwhelming response, as you can see. this was the scene at hillsdale mall in san mateo earlie today. the company had to turn people away in fact. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillio is live where a similar scene has been playing out all day long. >> reporter: if you can believe it, that warning did not discourage more families from jumping in line. parents say the deal was just

too sweet to pass up, even if it meant that they would stay in line for more than six hrs and po with nothing. now, normally the stuffed toys can cost anywhere from $20 to $35 each. we're told the retailer wanted each kid to have the full build-a-bear experience so the chain has chosen not to consolidate the workshop process. the chain posted earlier to facebook about closures to stores across the u.s., canada and the uk because of the overwhelming crowds and safety concerns. the parents here didn't seem to mind, saying the experience and excitement were worth it all. >> for me it was the first time my kids got to go to build-a-bear. i didn't get to do this growing up so it was neat for them to experience it. they got to experience it with their friends, waiting in line and all the craziness too, so -- >> reporter: and there are posted signs alerting families that pay your age day here is closed, but still that line continues to grow at this hour. we're told that the very first people in line showed up to the

you'll see the filtered finance. fire danger remains elevated and muggy conditions going into tomorrow. computer models are in disagreement. one is very dry for tonight. this is the wetter model, 7:00, hour by hour, showing you the potential for a shower or thunderstorm developing heading into tomorrow morning and then pretty much out of the picture as we head toward the afternoon, but still that humidity will linger as though clouds are slow to clear. tomorrow morning mid-50s to mid-60s. it will be a sticky morning, mild conditions. don't be surprised if you hear a clap or two of thunder. there's a 20% chance basically of a thunderstorm developing. tomorrow afternoon similar temperatures to today, low 90s inland, low 60s near the coast for the coolest spots. we will see filtered sun because those clouds will be coming in once again from the southeast. i do want to show you the forecast for golden gate park this coming sunday, the aids walk. if you're taking part, it is going to be great walking weather because of the fog an cool conditions, so between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., cool and foggy, low to mid-50s.
