morning. that's right. the fbi agent who wrote those belligerent text messages slamming candidate donald trump was on capitol hill in an explosive in your face hearing, unlike anything we've seen for quite some time. >> not once in my 26 years of defending our nation did my personal opinions impact any official action i took. >> reporter: fbi agent peter strzok defending himself in that dramatic congressional hearing. strzok under fire for those text messages to fbi lawyer lisa page where at one point he calls trump an idiot. with page responding, he's awful. in another exchange page writing, god, trump is a loathsome human. strzok responding yet he may win. america will get what the voting public deserves. >> mr. strzok and others inside the fbi and doj turned our system of justice on its head and that's why we're here and why this matters. >> reporter: republicans

abc's kyra phillips is in washington on the story for us. good morning to you, kyra. >> reporter: good morning. it all started when michael cohen set up a company to pay off adult film aye interest stormy daniels. but now we're learning about the money that went into that company including $1.2 million from a swiss drugmaker. cohen's lawyer says he was just hired to advise on health care policy but senate democrats say he was offering up even more. this morning, an exclusive look at michael cohen's emails and why one major pharmaceutical company paid him more than a million dollars. what were they after? senate democrats say promises of back door access to the trump white house. in these emails laid out in a 21-page report they say michael cohen is marketing his presidential access to joe jiminez former ceo of novartis and crossing ethical lines. michael cohen even signing his emails personal counsel to

president donald j. trump. jiminez appearing to seize an opportunity writing to cohen, i am forwarding you some ideas to lower drug costs in the u.s. cohen replying, received and i will forward to you their suggestions. what were the advantages for novartis? >> what novartis in my view wanted and it sure looks like they got it, was a direct line of access to the white house. >> reporter: cohen's attorney lanny davis telling abc news mr. cohen, who never introduced anyone from novartis to anyone in the administration or congress did not sell access. now, paula, you'll remember cohen once said he'd take a bullet for the president but in that interview with george he signaled he may cooperate with investigators. this morning the white house is declining comment on our story

and novartis telling senate democrats the email exchanges were not part of their contracts at all with cohen. >> all right, cohen also saying his only loyalty is to his family. kyra, thank you for that exclusive reporting this morning. robin? >> now to the government re-opening the investigation into one of the most notorious muirs in u.s. history, the lynching of 14-year-old emmett till in mississippi 63 years ago. many are hoping this will lead to an anti-lynching law. linsey davis is here with more on this. >> good morning, robin. this move from the department of justice comes after bombshell revelations in a recent book about the landmark case of racial violence. emmett till was killed in 1955 after a white woman alleged the 14-year-old whistled at her and grabbed her by the waist. the woman's husband and brother-in-law were later acquitted by an all white jury and in an interview for the book "the blood of emmett till," carolyn bryant donham

reportedly recants some of her original testimony. she said till had merely insulted her and nothing he ever did possibly could justify what happened to him. overnight till's family released a statement to abc news saying, we appreciate the overwhelming support from around the nation in response to this historic update and, robin, it's not clear if 63 years later if donham face perjury charges. >> the two men are now dead. she is 84 years old. what is the hope here? i think people will be surprised that we're talking about an anti-lynching law. that that is not already on the books is it. >> reporter: a lot are surprised and that ultimately is the goal. people are hoping there will be some kind of change because of this. >> finally some justice for emmett. >> yes. the urgent beach warning. one teen learning just firsthand how dangerous those rip currents can be treading water for ten hours after he was pulled to sea. abc's victor oquendo has the story. >> reporter: this morning a frightening reminder of the power of rip currents. >> i tried to put up the fight of my life and i couldn't -- i couldn't win.

>> reporter: 19-year-old blake spataro was standing in waiste deep water when a rip current swept him into the ocean. >> dispatch all water units. advising a 19-year-old male is missing for 30 minutes and hear him yelling for help but can't see him. >> reporter: for ten hours as the coast guard launched a massive search, blake struggled to survive adrift in the ocean. >> i saw lights and trees for miles and it felt so, so cruel just to be that far out from civilization when it's right in front of you. >> i was up and down the beach all night screaming, hollering. >> reporter: finally coming ashore at this golf course. >> how quickly can you get swept up in one of those currents? >> it can be instant. >> reporter: this aerial view shows how easy it can be. to get swept away. the waves breaking on shore like tentacles. scientists illustrating it by using green dye. now, if you're trying to stop a rip current you can't do elevat

speak about veterans' issues and our military and current events to a new audience. it was supposed to be this big-time showtime documentary and it was passed on to me by a speaker's bureau which i would assume had done some vetting, but, you know, this quote/unquote comedian is obviously very good at lying, at duping people because look at the long list now since i've come out and described my experience. all these other guys, all these men coming out now saying, oh, yeah, me too. >> what was the moment in the interview when you said, oh, wait a minute, this isn't right here and you got up and you walked out? what led up to that moment? >> yeah, he started showing me these graphs and statistics that had like typos in them and just didn't quite look right and part of this propaganda, this data, he was showing me had something to do with sex changes and

transgenderism. then he brought up chelsea clinton and said that she was a recipient of a government funded sex change and, you know, it just got worse and worse and worse as the minutes went on in this bizarre really embarrassing, humiliating interview that, you know, it mocked middle class americans. it mocked our values. it mocked the disabled and it just got worse and worse and, you know, it was occurring to me whatever this show is, whatever this interview really is is all about humiliation and devaluing middle class americans whom i represent. so, yeah, i said enough was enough and i took off my mike and walked out and since then nobody returns my calls. they had given us fake names as to producers and anybody involved in the show so nobody has taken me up on my offer for them to donate the proceeds from this show to veterans' organizations that truly support

and respect our vets. >> i know you've asked for them to do it and no response. we asked showtime to show us a clip because there are claims that he is saying that he did not portray himself as a disabled veteran and we asked for a clip so we could see it and they refused to give us one. so how do you respond to them saying that he was not indeed acting as an injured veteran? >> well, this actor, this comedian, whomever he is, he's a proven liar. so nobody can believe a word he is saying now as to his rebuttal but the tweet or letter that he had posted yesterday, his explanation as to who he really is, you know, i mean the very first line in that that gave it away even the letter to the public explaining himself is a paro parody. he wasn't able to join the military because he had bone

spurs in his testes. read a line like that and, you know, man, this guy doesn't quit. he just -- you know, he thinks this kind of stuff is funny and mocking the disabled and mocking and belittling our vets with his portrayal, in my book, it's not funny. >> in the many books it's not funny. it definitely crossed the line and many do share your outrage. don't get me wrong. many share your outrage. there have been people saying, aren't you playing into what they want because many people didn't even realize this show was happening and now this is bringing more attention to it. are you concerned about that? >> that's a good point but, see, cbs and showtime, they're going to be pimping this thing hard. to people will hear about it anyway. so for me to get out there and let people know what's coming, i think, is important and if people tune in to the show then they're going to see how middle class americans are mocked and our values are mocked. this comedian too, he mocks gays, he mocks jews, he does these other episodes where the

intent is to humiliate. it's to parody something that is important to an individual or an entity or group of people and, again, you know, if people do decide to tune in, they'll hear about it anyway. if they tune in, well, the ill-gotten gains by cbs and showtime, those, i say, need to be donated to people who deserve the gains. >> yeah, and other people are calling for us not to watch it at all and boycott it. what's next for you? do you have any political aspirations? what does sarah palin want to do next? >> i am very thankful i have a platform now still. you know, proof that you don't need an office and a title to get out there and make a difference and stand up for what you really believe in and what you believe is going to help this country. i appreciate the position i'm in now but certainly always ready to go through an open door that perhaps is in my future to get out there and serve the public.

now to our "gma" cover story. an alarming new study showing a spike in teens with high blood pressure. saying nearly 800,000 more teens have it. that staggering jump based on new guidelines that our chief medical associate dr. jennifer ashton has. this is alarming. >> you don't think of the word teens and hypertension in the same sentence, but we now know

it's a major issue and identifying it early is important. if that goes on to adults with hypertension it's a setup for cardiovascular disease, stroke. last year there were new guidelines and lowered the threshold to 130/80. that is now the cut off for youths and teens. a recent study by the cdc wanted to look at the numbers in the country and found that one in seven u.s. teens or youths had blood pressure greater than 130/80. and about 800,000 now met this new diagnosis. so that's concerning. the good news is even though they've lowered the threshold bringing in more people with that diagnosis, overall the numbers are going down, so kind of a good news/bad news situation. >> so, of course, the next question is medications? >> some case, yes, but here's the important thing when you're talking about this age group. lifestyle modifications are key. so what does that mean? we start with food is your medicine. most are familiar with lowering sodium. increase foods with potassium just as important and daily

exercise can lower those numbers. yes, in certain children -- not will need medication. >> look elsewhere first. >> absolutely. >> especially at that young age. if you're a parent and listening to this -- >> when this instrument is brought out at your next doctor's visit, here are some things you need to know. that blood pressure needs to be checked in both arms. the numbers should be almost the same. you have to use the proper size cuff. if you use one too small you will get a falsely high number. you should be doing this on bare skin, so if you come in in the winter and wearing a sweater and someone puts a cuff on over that sweater, not the right way to do it. even if you get one high number, robin, that needs to be repeated two or three times. don't worry. this is not something we make with -- a lot of people get nervous when they go to the doctor. hopefully not my office. >> i know, not at all. >> but also doesn't hurt to have one at home. >> there are automatic ones that are really important and good ts >> it's digital. >> super easy. >> have a great weekend.
