francisco chopped off. the 12-hour day planner has dense fog with clouds throughout the afternoon. warm near 90 degrees. a look at the temperatures next. we'll have the forecast in a few minutes. chris? >> sure thing. chp is investigating a death that left three dead and others injured. it happened at 10:30 in castro valley when officers arrived, they found a red mitsubishi on its roof. five people were in the car and all had to be taken out.ut. >> a deer was in the road. it caused the vehicle to overturn on its roof. >> chp says both passengers who died were women. one was 58 and the other 25. officers say alcohol was not suspected. it is unclear if speed was a factor in the crash.

an east bay firefighter helped save numerous dogs from a fire, then one turned on him, causing gruesome injuries to his faith. john witing is undergoing surgery at the hospital. he helped rescue two people and 18 dogs in a house fire just before the attack. abc 7 news are reporter has the story. >> reporter: this is alameda fire department battalion chief seen here talking about a man who rescued his autistic brother from a fire last year. >> going into the navy. >> reporter: saturday morning, he rescued him from a pit bull attack. this is video of the dog before the incident. >> i hope he will be all right. i pray that he be. >> it wasn't during the fire fight, it was after and something we weren't expecting during part of the investigation. >> reporter: he interviewed the 15-year-old fire victim, her

dog, which was leashed at the time, bit him in the face. it caused severe injuries. >> he was two or three feet away from the gal. for whatever reason, the dog jumped up and attacked the chief. >> that is so sad. she didn't have no control over that dog. seriously. >> reporter: chp escorted the battalion chief to the hospital where he will undergo surgery for his injuries. >> go through many, many surgeries. >> reporter: firefighters saved two people and 18 pit bulls from the home in san leandro. two dogs fied in the fire. >> this house had, there were younger pups, middle-aged and older dogs. >> we exercise the hill every day. to know that is scary. >> reporter: they are investigating possible animal neglect and cruelty. the surviving dogs are in custody of animal control.

>> firefighters throughout the state are grieving the loss of a bulldozer operator killed on the front lines of a fire in yosemite national park. he died when his bulldozer overturned at the ferguson fire. he leaves behind a wife and two children. he was following in his father's footsteps to join the agency. his peers are devastated by the death. >> it is going to be hard for the unit to process the loss, but we all know that in the world of fire fighting, it is a difficult job, it's a dangerous job. >> the ferguson fire has burned 1,000 acres since it started friday night. it has led to evacuations and the closure of highway 140. right now, it is 5% contained. the massive county fire in napa was fully contained this morning. cal fire expects to have the

fire completely out later today. it started two weeks ago, burning 90,000 acres and destroying 20 buildings. one firefighter was hurt and properly installed electric livestock fence is being blamed for starting the fire. a man and woman arrest after they stole a sacramento fire truck and led police on a chase. it was caught on camera. that two-hour chase ended near lake orrville. it started when the suspects took the truck as firefighters were battling a grass fire north of sacramento. the truck has damage, including to the front wheel. the fire department said the truck is worth $1 million. the victim of a deadly, on-the-job accident outside a church was a teenager. they report the 17-year-old of

newark died after being trapped under a bobcat vehicle outside cross roads community church thursday morning. asphalt company, casey paving was doing work in the parking lot at the time. cal osha is now investigating. police are looking for the vandal who targeted a mural of bay area. abc 7 news was at the mural at 19th and mission in san francisco's mission district. someone threw white paint on to the artwork. the artist, mel waters returned to repair the damage. an organizer says vandalism is an insult to the latino community. >> when you look at this damage that has been done, we know that it's somebody that purposely came with white paint and threw it on the face of carlos. >> roberto hernandez says it's important not to allow incidents like this to divide the

community. a long time bay area journalist is stepping down as publisher after using the "n" word during a staff meeting. he apologized for the remarks saying, quote, characterture i see of myself is not who i am. the california democratic partner -- finestein asked the party to stay neutral. kevin is a member of the state senate and faces an up hill battle to unseat finestein. he's trying to sell himself as a fresh face. the endorsement means the party will spend more money to promote deleon in the election. the man behind burning man was honored in san francisco

last night. he died in late april. abc 7 news reporter has more on a special celebration of life. >> reporter: the man with the hat, larry harvey inspired a culture only some would understand. in 1986, they ignited a wooden man on san francisco's beach. the crowd it attracted and the popularity spread like wildfire. >> 500, then 1,000, then 2,000. don't forget the art. the art was there, and grew. >> it went to nevada, a destination and outlet for tens of thousands of burners who embraced the community, cultivated bihar vi. for brett, it led to love. >> i met this young lady in 2001 and married her six days later. we have been married 17 years. >> reporter: this story and many others shared at the celebration of life and harvey's legacy.

limits. >> no, no, no. go! go away! >> the christianson family was about to walk their dog when they found the bear exploring their yard. she yelled at the bear to scram. it worked. she wishes her kids would obey her just as the bear did. it's summer. that means more insects flying around. how can you protect yourself from diseases? michael finney has some recommentions. >> reporter: anowing, irritating and potentially dangerous. mosquitoe and tick bites can ruin any summer outing. and the diseases they carry like west nile, lyme disease and rocky mountain fever are worse. the repellant that protects against mosquitos and ticks. >> deet at 15% to 30%.

deet is safe when used as directed for kids and pregnant women. >> reporter: expert testing against mosquitos, a standard repellant is applied to forearms, then stick it into a cage of 200 disease mosquitos. if there are two bites or one bite in an exposure period. consumer reports did not test all repellants against ticks. previous test results and further research indicate that any product that protects from mosquitoe bites will likely prevent tick bites, too. the top rated contain deet, total home, woodland scent insect repellent and off. performing well in consumer reports testing were this 30% lemon eucalyptus repellent.

both are safe, oil of lemon should not be used on children under 3 years old. to get the best protection from the repellents, apply them properly. follow the directions on the label. the u.s. and environmental protection agency says deet with concentrations of 30% or less are safe when used as directed. tests from consumer reports show most natural products with the exception of oil of lemon and eucalyptus don't perform well. a wine company is taking on google. they claim that google refuses to take down negative reviews written by an online troll. we have more. >> reporter: what grounds do you want to dismiss? the aide had nothing to say. >> i'm disappointed.

has been hit by robbers. an employee escaped after a suspect fired a gun. they struck big oak plaza coins at 9:15 saturday morning. one of the robbers fired at an employee. there are reports there are several in the past two months. detectives are trying to see if the robberies are connected. in palo alto, a plea from the founders of a popular nonprofit cafe has operational courts soar, there's growing concern over how long the business can operate in the current capacity. >> reporter: at the mitchell park community center, a socialize that is different. >> i see them having an opportunity to contribute and be a part of something. that's why i love adas. >> they started ada's to empower adults with disabilities and

thanks for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyn. drew tuma has the forecast. good morning to you. >> good morning. we are starting with cloud cover. live doppler 7 along with satellite showing the cloud cover with the north bay and south bay. visibility wise, as we head to the north bay, petaluma, six miles as you head to the bay. outside, cameras showing the fog over san francisco at this hour. future weather, as you go hour-by-hour, by 7:00, we expect the clouds overhead. by 10:00, 11:00, the clouds pulling away from the coast, sunnier skies. we'll look at the highs later on. >> drew, thanks. ahead of president trump's meeting with russian president, vladimir putin, white house national security adviser, john bolton will appear on "this week." you can watch it with george stroumboulopoulos on abc 7.

ahead of his meeting, the president is getting in another round of golf. he was seen this morning playing with his son, eric. the president is staying at his golf club resort in scotland. he tweeted, it is his primary form of exercise. there were a few protesters out of sight from the president. he will head to helsinki for the meeting with russian president, vladimir putin. the government is working to meet a court-ordered deadline to reunite the children with parents they were separated from at the border. we have the emotional reunion. >> reporter: the trump administration working to reunite 2,500 immigrant children separated from their families. the emotional reunions playing out across the country. this 6-year-old separated from his mother nearly two months finally reunited in seattle. their joyful reunion one day after the high profile reunion

of allison with her mom. 6-year-old allison became the voice and the face of those children separated from their families after she was recorded crying, asking someone to call her aunt. >> reporter: following allison's mom on the five-hour journey to meet her at the airport. her message to other parents, keep fighting. a guatemalan mother driven from arizona to new york to be reunited with her three children. she thanked the groups, immigrant families together, raising money to help other families reunite and in detroit, a father separated from his 3-year-old son for more than three months. the two, finally together after a deadline requiring all children under 5 to be reunited with their parent. according to the government, 57 of 103 young children have been returned to their families.

in some cases, parents didn't qualify because of criminal b k background. in other cases, parents have already been deported. protests erupted after chicago police shot and killed a man on the city's south side. officers confronted a man who appeared to have a weapon. the man started flailing and swinging his arms and tried to run away. that's when at least one officer shot him. police recovered a weapon at the scene but say he did not fire at officers. 100 people confronted police last night. >> reporter: crowds were very -- they were combative to the police, throwing things. i know they are very passionate about things that happened in the community especially when dealing with the police. but, it got a little out of hand. several arrests were made. >> police say at least four

people were arrested and four officers were injured with rocks and bottles. new developments out of haiti where violent protests led to the resignation of the prime minister. at least two people have died in the riots so far. the prime minister, was behind the proposal to raise gas prices by 38%, 47% and diesel by haiti's parliament planned to hold a vote, but the prime minister opted to resign. the government suspended fuel price increases. as the soccer team and its coach rescued from a cave in thailand recover, their story is being turned into a work of art. 300 artists are creating a mural, telling the story of the rescue. there are also portraits of the former thai navy s.e.a.l. that died. it will be displayed at a

hard for this 11-year-old. >> when i was doing it, i would get tired. i would rest for a bit, then go back. >> reporter: in march, doctors finally concluded she needed a heart transplant. >> sweet little princess, you know, a lot of why us, which is not, we should never think like that. >> reporter: on july 1st, she was in the operating room undergoing a transplant thanks to a donor. about 500 pediatric heart transplants are performed every year. some children die waiting for the heart. that's why signing up to be a donor is so important. when it opened in 2015, ucsf children's hospital became an official pediatric center, certified to perform heart transplants. the old hospital on the campus never did. >> there's a very complicated process we had to go through to get approved by the federal government to be able to do

redwood and marciel. five people were in the car and all had to be extracated. >> a deer was in the roadway, the driver swerved, left the roadway, hit an embankment and caused the vehicle to turn on its roof. >> chp says both passengers who died were women. one was 58 and the other 25. one of the injures was 15 and the other two adults. alcohol is not suspected. it's unclear if speed was part of the crash. firefighters helped save numerous dogs from a fire. the battalion chief is under going extensive surgeries. he helped rescue two people and 18 dogs from a house fire in san leandro before the attack. abc 7 news
